In his latest interview with BizNews, US intelligence analyst retired Colonel Chris Wyatt comments on US President Donald Trump's pick of his former “big opponent” Brent Bozell III as Ambassador to South Africa. “…around in 2016, he called him (Trump) the greatest charlatan of them all, a huckster and shameless self-promoter.” However, “he's probably the right guy to be honest for this position… someone who's not quite as antagonistic regarding issues related to South Africa.” As for why Joel Pollak missed out on the posting, Wyatt says: “…maybe he knocked himself out with his reporting on South Africa.” Wyatt also gives his take on some of the possible candidates for SA Ambassador to the US, including Tony Leon, Lindiwe Sisulu, Bantu Holomisa, and Velenkosini Tlabisa. Meanwhile, he warns of a huge exodus from South Africa. “…I can tell you at least 120,000 people we've got information on have submitted a request to the American government to find out if they can participate in this programme. If you take that for an average family of four, we're talking half a million people - and there are a lot more people who expressed interest in it…if they're allowed to come here, it will be devastating to South Africa's economy.”

Tourism minister Lindiwe Sisulu and the EFF's Godrich Gardee purportedly shared notes regarding the ANC's plans ahead of parliament's debate on the section 89 vote on Phala Phala. In a leaked audio, a man, supposedly Gardee, can be heard asking a woman, seemingly Sisulu, about her whereabouts and whether she had arrived in Cape Town for the debate. He also asks whether she will "stand up or chicken out". Sisulu responds, saying they have just left an ANC caucus meeting

African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) member Lindiwe Sisulu said the party cannot have leaders who threathen to take members' jobs away for not towing the party line. This after Members of Parliament (MPs) debated over whether to adopt the Section 89 panel report that found President Cyril Ramaphosa may have breached the Constitution and broken anti-corruption laws. If the report was adopted by Parliament, Ramaphosa would have faced an impeachment process. The motion to adopt the report was defeated 214 votes to 148, with two abstentions, on Tuesday. Sisulu claimed ANC MPs were dictated to by the party's national chairperson Gwede Mantashe to vote against adopting the report at an NEC meeting prior to the vote. She said on the day of the vote she had received a text message, which said she and former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, who were both reportedly poised to vote in favour of adopting the report, had been targeted, and she walk out to read it. Sisulu claimed that when she tried to re-enter to the chamber for the vote, the doors were closed. "After being hounded in caucus, I went to the chamber and sat down. Then I get a message, which said, 'you and Zweli Mkhize are being targeted, we suggest you do not vote'. So, I go out to check what this message is about. By the time I come back, the doors had been closed," Sisulu said. She said dictating how people should vote is reckless behaviour as “no one is owing the ANC and nobody has a right to take decisions like that”. She said ANC members were not allowed to discuss the matter, and that they were deliberately blocked by Mantashe. She said the ANC need a stronger integrity committee that operates on a daily basis. “This [meeting] starts off with us discussing the matter of Phala Phala and the Section 89 report and we discuss it in the NEC and in the NEC both Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Zweli Mkhize and myself were aggrieved about the way the ANC Chairperson Gwede Mantashe was dealing with the matter. It became quite clear to us that his purpose was to protect president Cyril at all costs,” she said. Sisulu said they wanted an opportunity to engage with the document to ensure a free vote for everyone. She claimed that there was an attempt to try to cushion the impact that the report would have. She said the outcome of this week's vote was the result of threats imposed on ANC members. "Parliament was held by the scruff of the neck to vote the way that it voted. And it is wrong, that is dictatorship of the worst kind... even If I did not vote, I do not regret it," Sisulu said. WORST SCANDAL Sisulu described the Phala Phala matter as the worst scandal to affect the country. She claimed the country was being held to ransom by people who looked to protect their access to Ramaphosa's "patronage". “I must say this about Comrade Cyril, his first instinct was to run away, but it is the people around him who are dependent on his patronage that said, 'Mr President what about us?'” she stated. She said what played out is an example of how one can erode the very essence of integrity of any economy. She said the party should have allowed Ramaphosa to resign, and should have investigated the matter to ensure it does not happen again. Instead, she said the party covered up and created an untenable situation. Meanwhile, Sisulu questioned why the country's law enforcement processes were slow in dealing with the Phala Phala saga.

Deputy Public Enterprises Minister Phumulo Masualle has hinted that he will vote in favour of Parliament's adoption of the Phala Phala report, adding to the voices wanting President Cyril Ramaphosa impeached. Ahead of the crucial vote in the National Assembly on Tuesday, Masualle told News24: "Accountability cannot be swept under the carpet and, as far as Parliament is concerned, it must ensure that. Where the president has issues that he has pointed to, which he considers false in the report, he is free to explore avenues to get the necessary remedies. Once that is done, we should be able to proceed with accountability." Asked which way he intends to vote, Masualle said: "I will be voting for a crafted resolution that speaks along the lines of ensuring accountability is not swept under the carpet, and that there are remedies for those who seek it." Several sources within the African National Congress caucus have told News24 that the meeting was heated from the start, as several MPs questioned why they had to toe the party line, and vote against the report. News24 understands that ministers Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Lindiwe Sisulu disagreed with this party line. If the report is adopted, Ramaphosa will face an impeachment inquiry. The ministers told the caucus that the threat to discipline them, should they vote in support of the adoption of the report, was unconstitutional. Sisulu was seen leaving in a hurry after the meeting came to an end. Democratic Alliance leader John Steenhuisen said, whatever happens in Parliament on Tuesday, it won't be the last time Ramaphosa hears of Phala Phala. "We are hoping that all MPs will vote with their conscience. This is not the last time the president will hear of Phala Phala. Whatever happens here today," he said ahead of the parliamentary sitting," he said. Inkatha Freedom Party MP Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi said the report had to be adopted. "If it is not, it shows exactly what the ANC is," he said. Buthelezi added that Parliament had requested this investigation and, with the information on hand, should adopt the report. All 400 MPs are expected to be at the Cape Town City Hall to vote on whether to adopt the Section 89 panel's report on Ramaphosa's Phala Phala dealings. National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula appointed the Section 89 inquiry panel, under leadership of former chief justice Sandile Ngcobo, following a motion by African Transformation Movement leader Vuyolwethu Zungula for Ramaphosa's removal on the grounds of "a serious violation of the Constitution or the law and serious misconduct". Ramaphosa has come under immense pressure following the release of the panel's report, which made damning findings against him in relation to the theft of $580 000 (about R10-million) from his game farm, Phala Phala, in Limpopo.

Tourist tragedy: No trip cancellations by German travellers after Numbi murder - Lindiwe Sisulu

Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu says there haven't been cancellations by German tourists who had booked trips to South Africa following the murder of a German visitor on Monday. Sisulu briefed the media on Wednesday about her department's response to the incident, which claimed the life of a 67-year-old German tourist. He was shot dead in Numbi, Mpumalanga. The man and three other tourists, including his wife, were ambushed by three armed men near the Kruger National Park. "There hasn't been anybody who has pulled out of their trips. We wanted to have a press conference to show everyone that we are on top of the situation and that we are looking into our hotels to increase the safety of our tourists," Sisulu said. The minister and tourism stakeholders met the three other tourists, who asked not to be identified, at OR Tambo International Airport. Sisulu tried hard to allay concerns about the safety of tourists and assured them that South Africa was safe for travellers. She said the incident was isolated, claiming that the German man was the third tourist death in the country in 27 years. "The only murder we have had – the Dewani case (Anni Hindocha's murder) – was a planned hit on the woman, and the other one was an accident in Cape Town," Sisulu said. Although Sisulu did not say how many tourists were robbed during the same period, she said the government had successfully addressed their robbery complaints in the past. "A few years ago, tourists would complain that they were followed from Johannesburg airport and robbed along the way to their hotel. The former minister looked into this matter, and we ensured that everyone who comes into the airport is followed through and warned about the possibility of being followed," she said. German Ambassador Andreas Peschke commended the government's swift response and acknowledgment of its responsibility to ensure tourist safety. He said Germany was one of South Africa's biggest tourism markets, and efforts to attract more visitors from that country would continue. "[Germany] is the third largest tourism market for South Africa... We still plan to bring a direct flight from Germany to Mbombela (in Mpumalanga) to increase the possibilities of exploring this beautiful country... We have the impression that the government is fully aware of the situation and is taking the necessary steps. We are ready to cooperate," he said. The three German tourists who survived Monday's incident flew back home on Wednesday after arriving in the country on 20 September. According to the tourism department, they spent their first five nights in Cape Town, and the next four nights in Durban. They then travelled to the Drakensberg, where they stayed for two nights. They were driving to their accommodation in the Kruger National Park when they encountered the armed men on Monday. Sisulu said the tourist's body would be repatriated to Germany on Thursday. His wife had asked to travel with it on Wednesday, but this was not possible. "We hired a plane from Mpumalanga because we intended that the wife should take the body back home. She had wanted to take the body home because she wanted to arrive with her husband so that her children were assured that he was finally back home, but this could not happen because of the German immigration requirements. We will be here at the airport tomorrow (Thursday) to ensure there is a good send-off of the body back home." While police indicated in a statement on Wednesday evening that three people had been taken in for questioning in connection with the murder, Police Minister Bheki Cele said the suspects had been arrested.

The African National Congress's (ANC's) December leadership contest is hotting up as branches name their preferred candidates and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is among the first to be nominated as party leader. Dlamini-Zuma was nominated at an event her eThekwini Ward 32 branch hosted in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday night. The Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs minister said last week that she was willing to contest for the ANC presidency for a second time if she was nominated. ANC branch general meetings (BGMs), which started over the weekend, continue this week. National executive members Lindiwe Sisulu and Zweli Mkhize were also eager for backing. Sisulu was in the Amathole region in the Eastern Cape over the weekend, where an ANC branch promised her a nomination in Tamara, Ngqushwa. The branch said it was time for a woman to lead the party after men had failed to do so for 28 years, branch chairperson Phumlani Mdolomba said, according to a Daily Dispatch report. Mkhize launched his presidential bid last week with a speech criticising ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa and his supporters. He said they were using state resources to attack opponents. News24 reported last week that Dlamini-Zuma's nomination had the backing of former president Jacob Zuma, who also told those aligned to the party's radical economic transformation faction to support her. Paul Mashatile, Ronald Lamola and Mmamoloko Kubayi are vying for the deputy presidency and are expected to be nominated. After a few months of uncertainty about who will meet the threshold for nominations, the picture will become clearer in coming weeks as branches - not the party's leaders - have their say.

Former president Jacob Zuma summoned African National Congress (ANC) national executive committee (NEC) members supportive of him to his Nkandla homestead on Saturday, and instructed them to get behind a campaign to have Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma elected as the next ANC president. News24 has been reliably informed that Zuma told the delegation led by suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule that Dlamini-Zuma was his preferred candidate and that he believed there was no need to be "defocused". "He brought the proposal of those who are known to be supporting him to support NDZ, and he motivated that they needed to be consistent, and there was no need to change the candidate [contesting Ramaphosa]. He said they couldn't be defocused and consider other candidates to challenge Ramaphosa," a well-placed source told News24. The meeting was said to have been attended by NEC members openly loyal to Zuma and included Dakota Legoete, Supra Mahumapelo and Tony Yengeni. Dlamini-Zuma lost against Ramaphosa five years ago at the ANC's 2017 elective conference. Two well-placed sources said Zuma had expressed that he believed there was a strong chance for Ramaphosa to be removed as ANC president given the allegations he faces around business dealings related to his Phala Phala farm. The meeting is said to have been a precursor to a bigger one in Nkandla planned for Thursday among Zuma's allies in the ANC. A final strategy to unseat Ramaphosa is expected to be finalised at this meeting. The push by Zuma for his supporters to campaign for Dlamini-Zuma comes after she confirmed that she would accept nomination for the presidency of the ANC. A source with intimate knowledge of the meeting said the NEC leaders at the meeting gave Zuma feedback about efforts to oppose Ramaphosa, and that party structures were considering three candidates to go up against him - Zweli Mkhize, Dlamini-Zuma and Lindiwe Sisulu. "He expressed his wish (that Dlamini-Zuma be supported) and gave guidance on how the campaign must go, but they said to him that they have to see what branches and regions are saying and report back to him," the source said. News24 understands that Zuma was told that his wish would be communicated to party structures, but "on the assumption that ANC branches and regions will decide who should be the candidate". Dlamini-Zuma's bid to contest Ramaphosa was seen as a blow to Mkhize, who had worked in earnest to secure the nomination from the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal for the position. "By the end of the week, we have to decide on one name (to go up against Ramaphosa). We cannot have all three contesting and tearing the support base apart. None of them will stand a chance if that happens," the second high-level source said. Ramaphosa's bid for a second term is being supported by the ANC in Limpopo, North West, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga. ANC branches are expected to begin nominating leaders for the December conference this week.

“I am not going to stop, I am going to continue,” says minister of tourism Lindiwe Sisulu on her sustained offensive against the country's constitution and judiciary. Sisulu was addressing a virtual Youth Month event organised by the Unisa Law School on Tuesday. In her speech she resuscitated her controversial letter that launched an unprovoked attack on the country's constitutional order. In the latest move that signals his willingness to serve in the African National Congress's (ANC's) top six, Ronald Lamola said the party's top six structure should reflect the country's demographics. And he marked himself as a man on a mission to point out the ANC's need to elect a younger generation of leaders. "I know that we still need some of them, and they can impart some experience, but they cannot be a majority. That is the open discussion we must have with them. It must be open [and] cordial... but we must not be apologetic. I am saying this to the region because I know it is very important that the ANC reflects our country's demographic," Lamola told an audience of ANC members at the Walter Sisulu memorial lecture in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga over the weekend. He publicly stated his willingness to serve in the top six. But it's unclear whether his push to be nominated becomes a reality when the party heads to its elective conference in December. This comes as the push from older ANC leaders, including treasurer Paul Mashatile, to rise in the ranks of the top six gains momentum. Mashatile was showered with praises and chants for his endorsement to serve as ANC deputy president at the Limpopo conference. Other older ANC leaders, including Lindiwe Sisulu, Jeff Radebe, and Zweli Mkhize have shown a keen interest in leading the party. Lamola used former ANC leader Walter Sisulu as an example of a young leader who was elected when he was 37 years old to serve as ANC secretary-general. "We are told to wait until we are pensioners. Then we will be ready to be in the top six of the ANC. The ANC, in all its life, has embraced generational mix. We need a careful transition toward a new generation of leaders and thinking. A failure to transition will delay the necessary shift we have to make to realise our mission," he added. "The reality is that the ANC became highly effective when young people like Walter Sisulu, Lilian Ngoyi and Oliver Tambo took the responsibility of leading the organisation after it had become moribund," Lamola said. He added that those who were implicated in state capture were not prepared to go down without a fight. The implementation of the recommendations of the State Capture Report was part of the ANC 2017 national conference resolution, he pointed out. "Our organisation is infested with wedge-drivers. Day by day, we bear witness to their mechanism in action, and they spare no one. They even dare to maliciously attack even the president of the ANC. The commission of inquiry was a Nasrec resolution on state capture. When implementing the inquiry's recommendations into state capture, we are implementing the Nasrec resolution," he added.

Is Lamola really jumping the succession queue by wanting to form part of the ANC's top leadership? Young's music was taken off Spotify after he had given them an ultimatum to either kick podcaster Joe Rogan off their platform for disseminating false information about vaccines or to remove his music if they were not prepared to censure the popular podcast host. They sided with their biggest money-making podcaster. Interestingly, many have argued that Young's ultimatum to Spotify constitutes intolerance towards those who happen to hold a different view to him. McKaiser links the Neil Young case study to an aspect of the debate about minister Lindiwe Sisulu's column in which she had attacked the judiciary, the constitution and the rule of law. Some of her defenders had also claimed that her critics have abandoned any respect for freedom of speech. In this episode, McKaiser argues that it is both unhelpful and inaccurate to claim that speech rights are at issue in these debates. He explains how the real issue is about whether the content of Rogan's podcast and of Sisulu's columns are reckless or harmful. While we can disagree on the latter issue, argues McKaiser, it is not correct to frame such criticism of Rogan or of Sisulu as a slide towards authoritarianism.
