Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #7 - Record Everything Any time you get the opportunity to speak, especially early in your career as a speaker, record it. Preferably a video recording. But at minimum, get an audio recording. Why? Because nothing will help you improve as a speaker than seeing and hearing yourself speak. PERIOD. Here are two quick thoughts... First, be prepared because watching yourself present can be brutal, especially early on. So give yourself some grace and realize your speaking is a work in progress. And most importantly, don't give up. Everything worth doing is worth doing poorly at first. Second, don't make recording complicated or distracting. Just set up your smartphone on a table or tripod and hit record. Or have someone else take care of the recording for you. Bottom line, if you make things too complicated, you won't do it. And if it's too distracting, you won't be focused on your presentation. I hope these 7 simple tips for becoming a better speaker have been helpful. For review, here they are one last time: #1 - Know Your Topic #2 - Capture New Ideas #3 - Get Your Reps In #4 - Focus on Serving #5 - Create an Experience for Your Audience #6 - Look People in the Eye When Speaking #7 - Record Everything Episode Resources 9 Ways to Get Paid as a Speaker (FREE Resource) 5 Keys to Create a Speech That Pays (FREE Resource) Got questions? Speaker Mastermind Community: Click here to find out more about the Paid to Speak Accelerator Community (aka Mastermind Community) and to put your name on our Waiting List. Show Notes: 7 Tips to Become a Better Speaker #6 - Look People in the Eye Why Is This Important? It helps you make personal connections with audience members. In fact, it's probably the simplest thing you can do to enhance the impact of your presentation and persuade audience members to your point of view. Why Is This Challenging? Looking into another person's eyes, especially when you're on stage talking to a group of people, just feels awkward. And if you're nervous, it feels even more awkward. How to Improve Your Eye Contact? Remember that you are speaking to individuals and not just a group. Find audience members who are engaged and are already looking at you. Sustain eye contact with each individual long enough to make a connection, then move on. Three to five seconds is usually a good guideline. Avoid looking at people who you can tell feel awkward with eye contact. That will feel more like a stare-down than eye contact. Be prepared. It's practically impossible to make eye contact when you're in your head trying to remember your presentation. Finally, here are the tips we've covered so far: #1 - Know Your Topic #2 - Capture New Ideas #3 - Get Your Reps In #4 - Focus on Serving #5 - Create an Experience for Your Audience Episode Resources 9 Ways to Get Paid as a Speaker (FREE Resource) 5 Keys to Create a Speech That Pays (FREE Resource) Got questions? I've loved chatting with all my amazing guests this year, but for our Season 3 finale, this one is extra special. DEREK SHULMAN was the lead singer of my favourite band GENTLE GIANT. They, along with YES and GENESIS (among others), were pioneers known for the complexity and sophistication of their music. Our chat covers Gentle Giant's entire 11 studio album career, with stories about their beginnings, hanging out with Elton John, working with Producer Tony Visconti, opening for Black Sabbath and headlining big arenas in Quebec. After leaving Gentle Giant, Derek became one of the most successful music executives of all time! Next season will open with PART 2 of our conversation where Derek shares about signing BON JOVI as VP of Polygram, and AC/DC, BAD COMPANY, PANTERA and DREAM THEATRE as the President of Atco/Warner in the US. As President of indie label Roadrunner, Derek went on to attain powerhouse status for the label by signing NICKELBACK and SLIPKNOT. Few bands reach the status of “institution.” It's a qualifier that has applied to Barenaked Ladies for several decades now. Multi-instrumentalist Kevin Hearn has been a part of that journey since 1995, joining prior to the one-two punch of Born of a Pirate Ship and Stunt, the latter of which catapulted the already-popular band into the stratosphere. Hearn's professional career stretches back further, to the late-80s, when he joined Toronto's legendary Look People. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On this week's podcast, I'm thrilled to welcome GARTH RICHARDSON and JOE PRIMEAU, two fantastic producer/engineers (and friends of mine) from the past. Garth's legendary producer dad JACK RICHARDSON mentored me, so we both chat about his influence. We also talk about how Garth, after landing in LA, ended up producing RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE's monster debut album, which sold 15 million copies, and who were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Some of his other clients include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mudvayne, Rise Against, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Big Wreck and the latest album by Devin Townsend (who's track Celestial Signals is featured at the top of this episode). Joe, who moved to LA after engineering at a great studio in Toronto called Phase One and working with me on recording/mixing albums in England/New York, went on to work with some great artists including The Brand New Heavies, Pharcyde, Tower of Power, REO Speedwagon, CHER, and many more. On this week's podcast, my guest is DARYN BARRY, co-owner of one of the best studios in the world: The ORANGE LOUNGE RECORDING STUDIO in downtown Toronto. I recently had some of the most fun in years with Daryn as we chatted in his beautiful, vibing control room. Daryn was the first employee I hired at my Hypnotic label/studio many years ago, so we chat about how we first met and some of the acts we worked on together, including BIG SUGAR, ANVIL, VOIVOD, and THE LOOK PEOPLE (featuring JAYMZ BEE and KEVIN HEARN). After leaving Hypnotic, we go deep on how Daryn helped open The Orange Lounge boutique studio and turn it into one of the best in the world. With an incredible list of some of the world's biggest stars who have either recorded or mixed there (DRAKE, AMY WINEHOUSE, THE WEEKEND, NELLY FURTADO, TRAGICALLY HIP, RUSH and MADONNA), Daryn opens up about his time working with the artists and offers his expert advice on the process. This is the longest chat I've had so far, but we had so much fun discussing our views on the music biz that I've decided to post the entire deep dive. Enjoy! On this week's podcast, I'm stoked to chat with David Diamond and Mister Zero from the band THE KINGS, who in 2020 celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of their debut album, The Kings Are Here. On the album was a massive hit song called “This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide” that exploded in Canada and the US and earned them an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. That song and the album was produced by legendary producer BOB EZRIN, whose incredible portfolio includes such masterpieces as Pink Floyd's the Wall, Peter Gabriel's solo album, Alice Cooper and many more. Listen in as we chat about the band's career, how Bob got involved, his production ideas, and how the band ended up on the biggest TV show of that era, Dick Clark's AMERICAN BANDSTAND. We also chat about what they are up to currently, the release of their brand new single “Always Off The Deep End” and much more! For this week's THE TALK MUSIC podcast, I'm beyond excited to feature my interview with ESTONIAN folk sensation MARI KALKUN. Her music is rooted in deep, ancient ESTONIAN traditions that I believe will resonate with new listeners, as will her singing voice which seems to speak directly from the heart of the ESTONIAN forest. Her new album titled STORIES OF STONIA, just released on PETER GABRIEL'S Real World Records. It's a MUST listen! During our chat, we talk about her inspirations in making the album, along with her recent performance in front of 100,000 people in Tallinn at the YOUTH and SONG festival where they also featured one of her original compositions, SATA -SATA, which I feature before the start of our interview. We also chat about her background growing up in rural Estonia, her studio in the woods, her previous albums and musical influences, and more! “Kalkun is a musician whose work is a jewel in the crown of the rich ESTONIAN scene.” – Fiona Talkington, Songlines, The Talk Music Podcast features host Tom Treumuth, a Multi-Platinum music producer/manager/entrepreneur. On this week's Talk Music podcast, check out my fun chat with Renan Yildizdogan. He's the founder and owner of the super cool label GYPSY SOUL RECORDS, a full-service artist collective, distributed by Fontana North. Considered by many to be one of the most successful INDIE labels around, his artists are constantly on tour not only in Canada but in the US and Europe as well, so this is MUST listen for those artists wanting to know how to break out of Canada. One of the acts on his roster is SAMANTHA MARTIN & DELTA SUGAR. Samantha has been nominated twice for a JUNO award and also nominated for BEST INTERNATIONAL ARTIST at the Blues awards in the UK. Other artists on the roster include The COMMONERS (who's track “Find a better Way” is currently being featured by the TORONTO BLUE JAYS), BYWATER CALL, SPENCER MACKENZIE and MARCUS TRUMMER and the Honeyrunners. Years ago, I produced an album for the band STONE RIVER of which Renan was the lead singer, so we begin our chat about some of the fun times we had recording in an old church. Renan also did this entire interview in his car as he just became a DAD, so he was looking for somewhere a bit more quiet lol. The feature music clip before the start of the interview is “Loving you is easy” by Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar. If you love indie RECORD STORES (and who doesn't) and love VINYL, or perhaps are interested in why vinyl sales are booming everywhere, check out this week's THE TALK MUSIC podcast as I go deep into a fun chat with owner Mike Clasen about his SUPER COOL Records on Wheels shop located in Dundas, ON. Hear how he got started 38 years ago, how he survived the ups and downs of the music biz and listen to him talk about how and why the last few years have been his best ever. Alan Cross, host of The Ongoing History of New Music, has been a customer at Clasen's store. “He's using a similar in-store model, the focus on rare stuff, the store-written reviews, that we see with Amoeba Records in L.A. and Rough Trade in London, U.K.,” Cross said. “Customers want information and context. Sadly, there are fewer and fewer of those people every year. We need more guys like Mike.” The Talk Music Podcast features host Tom Treumuth, a Multi-Platinum music producer/manager/entrepreneur. For this week's THE TALK MUSIC podcast, I'm so excited to release this entertaining interview with NU-folk duo PUULUUP. Like myself, they are proud ESTONIANS and, as a relatively small country, ESTONIA breeds and exports some truly incredible artists! Mixing surrealism and modern folklore with the talharpa, a bowed lyre popular in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages, PUULUUP playfully combine these traditional instruments with loops and modern electronic effects, otherworldly harmonies, and quirky lyrics. I've added a brief sampling of their music before the interview and I'm confident if you check them out you'll also become a fan. During the holiday season, I've spent many days reflecting on the lessons learned from my father. In a personal and professional sense, he taught me how to behave in public and set me up for success today. The lessons from my father resonated because they were simple and straightforward. He often told me to remember the simplest rule when meeting new people: Look people in the eye and say their name. In truth, it's the No. 1 rule in business: Treat people like people, and humanize your relationships. Recently, my son Jamie and I had dinner with one of my first bosses in business, Warren Cook, the president of the ski resort where I worked as the communications director in my 20s. Warren asked Jamie if he remembered my late father, who was a sales engineer for Westinghouse. In that capacity, my father leveraged an unusual combination of sales and people skills. Warren said to my son: “Your grandfather was a look-you-in-the-eye kind of guy.” Continue reading here. Ted Rubin, author of How to Look People in the Eye Digitally, believes in looking people in the eye, even in today’s digital world, as clients and customers want a connection that adds value to their business. Looking someone in the eye conveys that you’re paying attention and that you’re “in the moment.” Rubin states that in today’s heavily connected world, the line between business and personal has disappeared — and that regardless of one’s level of connectivity, at this stage, people might not want to, but they have to engage via social media. Ted Rubin is a leading social marketing strategist, keynote speaker and co-founder of Prevailing Path. He is the author of Return on Relationship, How to Look People in the How to Look People in the Eye Digitally Digitally and The Age of Influence: Selling to the Digitally Connected Customer. Show Notes: “A network gives you reach and that's great because you have to reach people in order to make friends, build relationships, have influence but a community gives you power. Network connects, communities care”. Those are powerful words from this week's guest, Ted Rubin, who was placed number 13 on Forbes' Top Fifty Social Media Power Influencers and number two on the Leadtail List of top twenty- five people most mentioned by digital marketers. Ted details his concept of Return on Relationship, RonR, which he describes as the value that is accrued by a person or a brand during nurturing a relationship. Although there are some parallels with the term Return on Investment (ROI), which he describes as simple dollars and sense, very straightforward and incredibly easy to measure, RonR in comparison, is the value (both perceived and real) that will accrue over time through connection, loyalty, recommendations and sharing. Ted's work defines and educates companies, brands and people about the importance of creating authentic connection, interaction and engagement through the concept of RonR. Listen to this week's episode of the Entrepreneurial You Podcast, to hear more on the Return on Relationship and how Ted recommends effective engagement with others through social media. Welcome to Episode 19 of The Art of Humanity, where we explore creativity + consciousness to allow you and your business to evolve. In Episode 19, Jessica Ann talks with Ted Rubin. {Like what you hear? Leave a review on iTunes!} Many people in the social media world know Ted for his enthusiastic, energetic and undeniably personal connection to people. Ted is the most followed CMO on Twitter, according to Social Media Marketing Magazine; one of the most interesting CMOs on Twitter, according to Say Media, #13 on Forbes Top 50 Social Media Power Influencers, and number #2 on the Leadtail list of Top 25 People Most Mentioned by digital marketers. ROR is the basis of his philosophy...it's all about relationships! His book, Return on Relationship, was released in 2013, and How to Look People in the Eye Digitally in 2015. In this interview, Jessica Ann and Ted Rubin talk about: His background with Seth Godin, starting back in 1997 (He sent Seth Godin a resume!) And the critical error that he made at the beginning of his career. His work with E.L.F. cosmetics in 2008 at the early stage of social and how he built a brand using ingenuity without a marketing budget. (6:00) I speak my mind. I say what I think. I tell people that they have to get back to something that is near and dear to your heart: their humanity. It's about building relationships and being good to people. It's about how connecting with people in a real way will benefit your business. (9:15) I got to listen and learn from Seth Godin. A lot of what I got from Return on Relationship came from Seth's Permission Marketing...about bypassing the agencies whenever you can and talking directly to the people you want to do business with. Agencies provide a great function but Seth's point was: instead (10:45) A network gives you reach but communities give you power...Networks allow you to connect with various people but communities care. (11:33) This evolution to me has been like a God-send. Not only am I a community builder but now I have all of these platforms to build communities that enable and empower me. But I also love to interact and meet with people. I'm obsessed with interacting with people. If you're going to make responsive part of your personal brand, be prepared for when your following grows and you have to be responsive for what you care about. And for me, the beauty or the difficulty of it is not something I built into my brand...it's a part of who I am. (13:00) His definition of community in today's digital age. (17:46) It's not about the platform it's about the people. (22:00) This is how you separate yourself, and that you do care about humanity. When you pass people in the street, smile at them! A brand is what a business or a person does...a reputation is what people remember and share. It's less of a problem than an opportunity. If you're with someone, put the phone down and look at someone. This isn't so much about humanity (although that has a lot to do with it). It's about showing people how important they are to you. (26:30) He tells a true story that not a lot of people know. You will feel better if you treat people better. You will feel better if you default to happy. You will feel better if you stop before you go off on someone. Take a breath and smile :) (32:18) I'm not a big persona guy. And what I've learned is that it's very hard to maintain a persona. In other words, if I didn't really believe in what I do, it would be hard to keep it up. It would be hard to fight the naysayers. (33:30) The hilarious study that was done on Millennials about the reason that the consumption of cereal is going down is because Millennials are too lazy to clean the dishes from eating cereal. Here is the study in The Washington Post. Like what you hear? Leave a review in iTunes!

The TalentCulture #TChat Show is back live on Wednesday, April 15, 2015, from 7-8 pm ET (4-5 pm PT). Last week we talked about the adoption of social software for workforce collaboration and communication, and this week we're going to talk about how to look people in the eye digitally. This week's guest is a big proponent of "Looking People in the Eye Digitally" (as well as personally). Something we know the TalentCulture #TChat Show community believes in as well. Introductions and ongoing relationships in social platforms require the same personal attention as the human touch and eye contact in a physical relationship. Join TalentCulture #TChat Show co-founders and co-hosts Meghan M. Biro and Kevin W.
