Between the presidencies of Lorenzo Snow in 1898 and Russell M. Nelson today, there have been a few key clarifications relative to the inner workings of Church government at the level of the Church presidency. And on today's episode of Church History Matters we want to talk about them! The first of these clarifications deals with the confusion introduced during Joseph F. Smith's presidency surrounding the role and position of the presiding Church Patriarch within the Church's hierarchy. The second is regarding the important question about who can serve in the First Presidency? Is it entirely the prerogative of the President of the Church to choose who serves as his counselors, or are there constraints in place which he must abide by when doing so? And the third clarification deals with what happens when you have a Church president who is incapacitated due to poor health, and therefore cannot actively lead the Church? To what degree can his counselors lead the Church without him? And what, if any, restraints are there to their authority in this circumstance? From the history we've covered in this series so far, we know that the succession plan of having the most senior apostle become the next Church president took time to develop and wasn't fully fleshed out in Joseph Smith's lifetime. In fact, it was during the decades of President Brigham Young's presidency that this plan was ultimately finalized … well, mostly. It turns out that prior to President John Taylor's death, there was one young apostle who challenged this plan of succession one last time. In this episode of Church History Matters we walk through this history and talk about how apostle Wilford Woodruff settled this issue once and for all. We'll also talk about the sacred experience Lorenzo Snow had after Wilford Woodruff's passing which established the pattern we follow today of reorganizing the First Presidency immediately after a Church president's death. This is a special Real Science Radio program. * Bill Keller, Gregg Jackson & Bob Enyart: These three Christian activists present some of the uglier aspects of Mitt Romney's Mormonism including the cult's longtime claim, as reiterated by Marion Romney at the LDS General Conference, that Mormonism uniquely teaches that God the Father was once a man who grew up on a planet similar to Earth. Weird and heretical. * God the Father was Once a Man said Brigham Young: "The idea that the Lord our God is not a personage of tabernacle [body] is entirely a mistaken notion. He was once a man. Brother Kimball quoted a saying of Joseph [Smith] the Prophet, that he would not worship a God who had not a Father... He [God] once possessed a body, as we now do..." -President & Prophet Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 9 see exmormon.org * More Brigham Young: "...the Father of Heights... Yes, he was once a man like you and I are and was once on an earth like this, passed through the ordeal you and I pass through. He had his father and his mother and he has been exalted through his faithfulness, and he is become Lord of all. He is the God pertaining to this earth. He is our Father." -President & Prophet Brigham Young, 14 July 1861 see exmormon.org * Mormon Prophet and President Lorenzo Snow: "I had a direct revelation of this. ... If there ever was a thing revealed to man perfectly, clearly, so that there could be no doubt or dubiety, this was revealed to me, and it came in these words: "As man now is, God once was; as God now is, man may be." - President & Prophet Lorenzo R. Snow, Unchangeable Love of God see exmormon.org * Mitt Romney's Second Cousin Once Removed: "...like begets like [i.e., reproduction after its kind; an organism begets similar organisms] and that for the offspring to grow to the stature of his parent is a process infinitely repeated in nature. We can therefore understand that for a son of God to grow to the likeness of his Father in heaven is in harmony with natural law... This is the way it will be with spirit sons of God. They will grow up to be like their Father in heaven. Joseph [Smith] taught this obvious truth. As a matter of fact, he taught that through this process God himself attained perfection. From President Snow's understanding of the teachings of the Prophet on this doctrinal point, he coined the familiar couplet: "As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become." This teaching is peculiar to the [LDS] restored gospel of Jesus Christ." -Elder Marion G. Romney, General Conference, October 1964 see exmormon.org * Mormonism Falsely Claims that Indians are Jews: One of the central claims of the Book of Mormon is that American Indians, including Aztecs, Incas, Mayans, Navajos, etc., are Jews. This stunningly false teaching states that some Jews left Jerusalem on ship in 600 B.C. and built a great civilization in the Americas. Also wrongly, "The whole face of the land had become covered with buildings" (Mormon 1:7) including with “fine workmanship… in machinery, and also in iron and copper, and brass and steel, making all manner of tools” (Jarom 1:8; 2 Nephi 5:15) with “silks… oxen… cows… sheep… horses… donkeys… elephants…” (Ether 9:17-19) and "shipping and their building of ships, and of synagogues" and “swords… shields… head-plates… armor…” (Alma 43:18-19; Ether 15:15). None of this is true. * BEL Mormon Prediction: Regardless of their intensive ancestry effort (to identify and baptize the dead), and despite the extraordinary power of DNA to help identify ancestry, Bob Enyart predicts that the LDS Church will never fund a research project to prove the Jewish ancestry of American Indians. An African tribe, the Lembas, have long been believed to be descendants of the Jews, for they circumcise, keep the Sabbath and the dietary law, and in their DNA they possess the Jewish genetic marker, being perhaps the descendants of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. DNA research has begun to show and will continue to show that American Indians are not related to the Jews, nor closely related to any Semitic peoples or the descendants of Shem, but rather, that they are primarily of Hamitic stock, from Asian people, having migrated to the Americas not by saiiling the Atlantic but by crossing the Bering Straight. * No Cities, No Money: While the historical existence of hundreds of cities mentioned in the Bible has been confirmed (97% of them so far), not one of the 38 cities mentioned by Joseph Smith in the Book of Mormon have been found by any notable secular historian or archaeologist. And while every coin in the Bible has been found and documented, none of the monetary units described in the Book of Mormon have ever been found. * If You Fear Obama, You'll Vote for Romney; If You Fear God, You Won't: Don't fear Obama. Fear God, for that is the beginning of wisdom! Besides, Obama is Romney-lite. And because Romney has already implemented policies that are so destructive that Obama only dreams of accomplishing such things, therefore, a vote for Romney is a vote for Obama. Today's Resource: Meet the Apostle John. He was the youngest of the Twelve. And at the time of this writing, he's now one of the last remaining. If you were an eyewitness to Christ's earthly ministry, what would concern you decades after the resurrection? From the battles that John fought we can learn lessons that will help us as we ourselves fight for the truth and battle false teaching within the church. By looking at "the things that differ," we can know what details in John's three epistles applied to the circumcision believers of his day and which of his teachings apply directly to us. What we believe about God is probably the most important thing we can believe. Everything else in a world view starts with our concept of God. Email us at podcast@pursueGOD.org.God the Father has not always been God. According to Latter-day Saint thinking, there was a time when God was not God. Before he became divine, he existed as a mortal human being. Joseph Smith, the founder and first prophet of Mormonism, put it like this in a message called the King Follett Discourse:God himself was once as we are now…. It is the first principle of the Gospel to know for certainty the Character of God,...that he was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ himself did.Our Heavenly Father, says Smith, was once human, just like us, and dwelt on some planet much like ours. Lorenzo Snow, a later LDS prophet, summarized this doctrine in a famous saying: “As man now is, God once was.” By contrast, the Bible teaches that God has always been God. Psalm 90:2 declares, “Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.” Long before anything else existed, God was still God. One translation says, “From everlasting to everlasting, you are God.”God the Father is an exalted man. But the being Mormons worship as God did not remain in his mortal human state. Over time, he progressed to become a god. This is what the word “exalted” means to Mormons: to be exalted is to become like God, with all the powers and prerogatives of God. In the King Follett Discourse, Joseph Smith added: “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!” In other words, God is the same kind of being as humans are. Thus in Mormonism, deity is not an intrinsic condition, but an attainable status or role. If godhood is intrinsic, humans cannot become gods, because humans are a different kind of being than God is. But to Latter-day Saints, God is not a different sort of being, the same kind of being who has achieved a higher standing or position. By contrast, the Bible teaches that God is not a man, nor ever was a man. Number 23:19 states quite clearly, “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind.” God does not have the failings that human beings have, such as deceit or uncertainty. The reason is not because he is more highly evolved or exalted than we are in our present condition. The reason is because God is not human at all.God the Father has a physical body of flesh and bone. If God is an exalted human being, it follows that he would have the same anatomy as we do. This is expressed in a training manual called Gospel Principles: “His eternal spirit is housed in a tangible body of flesh and bones.” It makes sense that if God is or was a man, he would have a human body with two arms, two legs, internal organs, and the rest. But the Bible

“This Church will stand, because it is upon a firm basis. … The Lord has shown it to us by the revealing principle of the Holy Spirit of light.” Lorenzo Snow, April 1900 That quotes embodies much of what is going on in the third volume of SAINTS, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' ongoing history being produced by the Church Historical Department. In it, we find Latter-day Saint Christians confronting new information, ideas, and grappling with changes required of the Saints as they entered the twentieth century and globalized throughout the early twentieth century. We learn about the end of sanctioned plural marriages and how African American converts lived with racism in their local congregations. We'll also learn about how Saints around the world embraced the challenges brought on by Revolution, Depression and world wars, and came out as stronger Saints with vibrant testimonies of the restored gospel. In today's episode, we speak with two of the writers and editors of the Saints project, Lisa Olsen Tait and Scott Hales, about how and why the Saints project as created, resources available to deepen Latter-day Saints' understandings of the past through approved resources, and much, much more. You may have heard the profound quote by Lorenzo Snow, “As man now is, God once was: As God now is, man may be." But you may not have heard BYU professor Dr. Marcus Martins's thoughts that then “God ... could very well be like me.” Martins believes that “if [God] lived on an earth like ours with the same plan of happiness, then it might not be so far from [the] truth to say that [He] could be Asian, Pacific Islander, African, Hispanic, Māori, or American. We really don't know, but it is worth considering.” In this special bonus episode of Sunday on Monday, we'll discover how all have been truly alike unto God since the very beginning, and how race and the priesthood relate to the Old Testament. In This Episode:It's Mike and Tyler this week and they've got the weightier things of life on their mind. Things like the Savior's command to "be ye therefore perfect" and to loofah or not to loofah. It's all about striving as they discuss the evolution from the unsustainable efforts of spinning plates to the lifelong system of churning gears to become better disciples of the Savior. The guys share the joy and excitement that is possible as they learn to balance the love of life now and the hope that comes in who they are becoming tomorrow. It's classic RMIT...making meaning from life experiences with just a pinch of shenanigans. Enjoy the ride!Show NotesWho Said It..."Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." Jesus in Matthew 5:48“The requirement was made by the Savior of his Disciples, that they should become perfect, even as He and His Father in Heaven were perfect. This I conceive to be a subject that concerns the Latter-day Saints; and I wish to offer a few remarks by way of suggestion, for the reflection of those whom it concerns… It requires time; it requires much patience and discipline of the mind and heart in order to obey this commandment. And although we may fail at first in our attempts, yet this should not discourage us from endeavoring to exercise a determination to comply with the great requirement...Do not expect to become perfect at once. If you do, you will be disappointed. Be better today than you were yesterday, and be better tomorrow than you are today. The temptations that perhaps partially overcome us today, let them not overcome us so far tomorrow. Thus continue to be a little better day by day” -President Lorenzo Snow"The chief happiness for a man is to be what he is." -Erasmus"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. In this episode, we talk about how our relationship with God strengthens when we make sacrifices in His name. Sacrifice can be seen as a negative term until we recognize that what we do blesses others and ourselves, as well as helps us to grow closer to God. We also talked about some blessings we've seen in our lives as we have paid our tithing. May we all be grateful for the blessings of our sacrifices and the love God has for us and all of His children! * He's NOT the Same Jesus: A month ago Bob gave The Chosen rave reviews (and still does). However, the series producer Dallas Jenkins, cruelly, has given Mormons false hope, claiming in a podcast that they are saved, they are brothers and sisters in Christ, and that they "worship the same Jesus". Mormons score three in the three ways to recognize cults: they add to the Bible, they deny the Trinity, and they deny that Jesus is the only way to heaven. That the Mormon "church" has long taught that God the Father was once a man we learn from their founders Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and one of their early presidents, Lorenzo Snow. One of their more recent presidents, Gordon Hinkley, couldn't outright deny this and so equivocated in the San Francisco Chronicle. See the quotes at kgov.com/mormonism and our now-updated page kgov.com/the-chosen. * Brigham (liked-'em) Young: Consider also that Brigham (liked-'em) Young and so did Smith, with 55 wives for Young (the youngest 15 when he was 42) and 40 wives for Joseph Smith (the youngest 14). See this documented at kgov.com/mormons#polygamy. Dallas Jenkins gives Mormons false hope and practically blasphemes when he claims that Mormons "believe in the same Jesus" as evangelicals do, for their church has taught that Jesus' Father was once a man as we are, and that He had a Father God, and that Father God had a Father God, and so on. Bob also mentions from kgov.com/mormonism the Bible's spot-on genetic predictions and the Book of Mormon's errors, for example claiming that American Indians are descendants of Jews, and that anciently they had built iron and steel tools, machinery, covered the land with great cities (in reality they didn't even use the wheel), allegedly used (bogus) monetary units. herded oxen, cows, sheep, and used donkeys, horses, and elephants. All false and condemning of Joseph Smith's wild fabrication called the Book of Mormon.
SUSTAINING AND FOLLOWING THE BRETHREN, Chapter 13 of Holy Priesthood Volume 5 http://ogdenkraut.com/?page_id=128 Pages 182 to 194 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey. (Romans 6:16) When used in this context, to sustain means to “support” and “uphold;” to help “keep in existence;” to assist someone in his office and calling. It doesn't mean you necessarily have to agree with every word he says. Over 40 years ago, Elder Marion G. Romney related the following story: One day when President Grant was living, I sat in my office across the street following a general conference. A man came over to see me, anelderly man. He was very upset about what had been said in this conference by some of the Brethren, including myself. I could tell from his speech that he came from a foreign land. After I had quieted him enough so he would listen, I said, “Why did you come to America?” “I am here because a prophet of God told me to come.” “Who was the prophet?” I continued.“Wilford Woodruff.” “Do you believe Wilford Woodruff was a prophet of God?” “Yes,” said he. “Do you believe that his successor, President Lorenzo Snow, was a prophet of God?” “Yes, I do.” “Do you believe that President Joseph F. Smith was a prophet of God?” “Yes, sir.” Then came the “sixty-four dollar question.” “Do you believe that Heber J. Grant is a prophet of God?” His answer: “I think he ought to keep his mouth shut about old age assistance.”Now I tell you that a man in his position is on the way to apostasy. He is forfeiting his chances for eternal life. So is everyone who cannot follow the living prophet of God. (Conf. Rept., Apr. 1953, p. 125)

Most days, we try to provide episodes that will help explain Mormon doctrine (doctrine from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). But every once in awhile, we release a totally random, slightly strange episode. And that's what you're getting today! In this episode, we share unusual (little known) stories about the prophets in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as Mormons). There are 17 prophets and we talk about ALL OF THEM. Have you heard the stories we mention? Let us know in the comments below! The prophets of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are as follows: Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow, Joseph F. Smith, Heber J. Grant, George Albert Smith, David O. McKay, Joseph Fielding Smith, Harold B. Lee, Spencer W. Kimball, Ezra Taft Benson, Howard W. Hunter, Gordon B. Hinckley, Thomas S. Monson, Russell M. Nelson
On this episode, we get into politics of Illinois in 1842. This year was a contentious race with the Mormons wielding so much power through their friends in high places. Rigdon runs for Illinois State Congress but loses. The Mormons promise their vote for the Democrat to replace Governor Carlin and Thomas Ford takes his seat as the new Governor of Illinois. What begins with letter exchanges and vicious accusation revealing conflict between Jo and Hingepin Sidney Rigdon ends in bygones being bygones and tests of loyalty. Politics will continue to play an increasing role in our historical analysis moving forward. Following Elijah Ables' Canadian mission, he returned for a short time to Nauvoo where he helped Joseph Smith escape from a mob from Missouri. Then he went to Ohio and encountered more Trouble in Cincinnati! Russell Stevenson continues our focus on #BlackHistoryMonth, and discusses some of the race riots and other difficulties Elijah Ables encountered in Ohio. https://youtu.be/UKPYgDJnKNo Russell: In about 1842, or it might have even been the fall of 1841, there had been a massive race riot break out in Cincinnati between local white workers and the African-American community. It was quite violent. Many prominent abolitionists found themselves under fire. Their homes, their offices, their businesses were all targeted for mob attack, and it's reasonable to suppose that Rees E. Price would have found under attack as well. So the fact that Elijah could navigate these white spaces, it tells you he had the skill to be in both worlds. And yet, in spite of this ability, in spite of this comfortability with white spaces, we know that in 1843, I speculate due to some of these heightened tensions that had developed due to this race riot, that locally, three apostles: Heber C. Kimball, Lorenzo Snow, and Orson Pratt, they banned Elijah from preaching to people not of African ancestry. GT: Ok, so approximately what year was that? Russell: Not approximately, it was 1843. GT: 1843, so he had some restrictions placed on him. Russell: Yes. I can't emphasize enough, though, it was not a priesthood restriction. They had the opportunity. If they wanted to take the priesthood from Elijah at that time, they could have. That was the perfect opportunity to do so. They did not. In the minutes that tell us about this episode, he is explicitly identified as a Seventy and there is no comment made about him losing priesthood, and two years later, there is a newspaper article again referring to Elijah's workings in that branch where he is also referred to as a Seventy. Russell also talks about speculation Elijah may have helped with the Underground Railroad to free blacks from slavery! Russell: Now did that lead to some sort of collaboration in helping with the Underground Railroad? That's a very interesting speculation. It also goes beyond the evidence. Trust me, I would love to know that Elijah played an active role in assisting with the Underground Railroad. We just don't know that. Don't forget to learn more about Elijah's Canadian mission, and his work on the Kirtland Temple. Check out our conversation….. [paypal-donation]
