Radical Candor
Radical Candor S4. Ep. 14: Quiet Quitting Speaks Loudly About Bad Bosses

Radical Candor

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2022 49:48 Transcription Available Very Popular

On this episode of the Radical Candor Podcast, Kim, Jason and Amy discuss the message quiet quitting is loudly sending to bad bosses and managers of managers.  We know that relationships don't scale, but culture does. This means that while you can't have a close relationship with every person who reports to the people who report to you, practicing Radical Candor with the people you manage can impact how they interact with the people they manage and so on.  On the other hand, if toxic stew is flowing from the top and being passed down from executives to managers of managers to individual contributors it should come as no surprise that people in this type of environment are disengaged at work. Radical Candor Podcast Episode at a Glance A recent piece in Harvard Business Review by Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman Quiet Quitting Is About Bad Bosses, Not Bad Employees shares data they gathered on almost 3,000 managers who were rated, by five direct reports on average, on two data points:  Employees' ratings of their manager's ability to “balance getting results with a concern for others' needs.” Employees' ratings of the extent to which their “work environment is a place where people want to go the extra mile” — what they called “discretionary effort.   Managers who were rated the highest at balancing results with relationships saw 62% of their direct reports as willing to give extra effort, while only 3% were quietly quitting. Whereas the least effective managers had three to four times as many people who fall in the “quiet quitting” category compared to the most effective leaders. They found that: “Quiet quitting is usually less about an employee's willingness to work harder and more creatively, and more about a manager's ability to build a relationship with their employees where they are not counting the minutes until quitting time.” On this episode of the Radical Candor Podcast, Kim, Jason and Amy pose a few questions to managers of managers: Are you holding managers accountable for the engagement of their team members? Are you looking at relative engagement scores? Even if engagement scores for your company are lower than average deviations from the mean within your organization matter.   If you have managers reporting to you who are underperforming on team engagement in comparison to their peers, you should be treating this as an urgent situation. Radical Candor Podcast Checklist Get curious about why some people on your team are disengaged. If you have managers reporting to you who are underperforming on team engagement in comparison to their peers, you should be treating this as an urgent situation. Ask yourself whether or not you have truly fostered a culture of Radical Candor. Do your employees feel valued, cared for and appreciated? Are their roles clearly defined? Are there opportunities for them to learn and grow? Do they feel like they can come to you with concerns? If the answer is no, you need to focus on building a culture of trust. Have “speak-truth-to-power” meetings. If you're a manager of managers, it's difficult to have visibility into every single thing that's going on. Speak-truth-to-power meetings are an effective way to get clear information from the people who report to the people you manage. Remember, relationships don't scale, but culture does. This means that while you can't have a close relationship with every person who reports to the people who report to you, practicing Radical Candor with the people you manage can impact how they interact with the people they manage and so on. Without a culture of trust, which has been identified as the most important factor in determining engagement, you've already failed. Sometimes it's not you, it's every authority figure ever. As the boss getting feedback from employees you might often feel like a projection screen for everyone's unresolved authority issues. When it comes time to give feedback to your boss, it can be helpful to remember that. Take a step back from both roles and try to see everyone you're working with as simply people. When you remove hierarchy from the situation, it all looks and feels much more straightforward.   Radical Candor Podcast Resources Quiet Quitting Is About Bad Bosses, Not Bad Employees Is Quiet Quitting Real? What do you prioritise? "Sometimes how we phrase or the language we use can really throw us off when it comes to what it means to prioritise..." (Want to read a full written for reading transcript version of this episode? Download it here.) Who is Ayo? Ayokunu Oduniyi is the founder of 4:12 Men. Its vision is to see men gather and grow together as they navigate what it means to be a Godly man in today's society. Ayo is a leader who transposes many avenues, with his eye in the camera viewfinder and his hands on helping his fellow man. In this episode, we will discuss the importance of prioritising and how Ayokunu Oduniyi applies this principle in his work with 4:12 Men. Totally 'on brand', 4:12 MEN derives its name from the bible: 1 Timothy 4:12 – “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Do you prioritise? Ayokunu Oduniyi is a leader who understands the importance of prioritising. In his work with 4:12 Men, he focuses on doing the harder things first. This principle can be applied to many areas of life, including our personal lives, our work lives, and even our spiritual lives. In our personal lives, we often find ourselves putting off the things that we should be doing first. We procrastinate on our health, our relationships, and even our own happiness. We tell ourselves that we'll start tomorrow, or next week, or next month. But the truth is, if we don't start today, we may never start at all. And, in our spiritual lives, we often find ourselves putting off the things that God is asking us to do. We tell ourselves that we're not ready, or that we don't have enough faith. But if we don't take action on what God is asking us to do, we will never experience the fullness of His plan for our lives. In this episode, Ayo speaks to this. Loudly.   Key leadership learning moments   01m13s - What's in a name? 07m00s - The plan when Ayo was younger 10m20s - The photographic eye 30m25s - The biggest thing that helped build trust and safety 34m20s - Substance vs appearances 36m30s - The biggest lessons from marriage 44m56s - What kind of father does he want to be? We catch up with our friend Sid Seixeiro who will be throwing out the first pitch tomorrow night against the Royals. His mission is just not to shorten the toss which would be the most embarrassing. Later we react to some of the Blue Jays players reactions to the firing including Bo Bichette's "I don't disagree" which went viral today. Sid also dishes on the Leafs and why the goalie situation only got more complicated. Finally his take on Canada Soccer and the Men facing Qatar and Uruguay ahead of World Cup 2022. Next up (29:00) we are joined by Jon Heyman from The NY Post and MLB Network. He was surprised to see Montoyo fired since a lot of the Jays problems were not his fault. Then a little on the KC Royals having so many people missing (10 of them) because of their vaccine status. The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the hosts and guests and do not necessarily reflect the position of Rogers Sports & Media or any affiliate.

Fr. James Altman - Masculine Strength is Enticing. Let's face it, we are living in the “Participation Trophy” era. For most of our culture, children are being raised by spineless fathers, or there is no father figure present at all. In this era, many grow up with narcissistic tendencies and will throw whatever temper tantrum necessary to get their way, because no strong authority is present to lead them unto strength of character; they learn temper tantrums work. This era of ours became especially evident in 2020 as the streets of America burned, people were beaten and mom & pop stores were looted. Add to this that a historic surge of elitist know-it-alls (Woke) have pulled out all the stops to take control of our country and our Church, as they advocate for a plethora of abominations unto God. Where are the strong and masculine spiritual leaders; the father figures, like Jesus (Matthew 5:29, Matthew 8:22, Matthew 10:14, Matthew 11:20-24, Luke 6:22, Luke 12:4-5, Luke 22:36, etc., etc.) to lead and guide and LOUDLY push back against this evil infiltration?!?! Souls are LONGING for this loving masculine strength to emerge once again!!! We discuss all of this on this week's podcast with one of the most loving father figures today. None other than Fr. James Altman. --------------------------------- Watch "Doomed to Repeat It" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Byrmu... --------------------------------- Help support this podcast by becoming a US Grace Force Patron here: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=25398590 --------------------------------- Join our US Grace Force Facebook group: https://usgraceforce.com/ --------------------------------- Battle Ready Emergency Preparedness Course: Be prepared to Care for and Protect your Family in times of Natural Disasters, Emergencies, Civil Unrest, Economic Collapse, and More - All in Line with Catholic Church Teaching. Long awaited, much anticipated, Maya and Angela touch on so many random things (rock n' roll, Bobby Flay, Etsy sex toys) while somehow predicting the future? Maya talks about her relationship with singer, rapper, and flutist, Lizzo, after watching her new show Lizzo's Big Grrls. She concludes that Lizzo is about as good as she can get for a public figure but has two strikes against her (being a "good fat" and making the god forsaken brand Yitty). Little did they know that an impending third strike was hurtling towards home plate as they spoke. There's lots of Lesbianism in this episode, at least more than usual. As Maya talks about the movie Saving Face (2004) and its casual racism in a seemingly idyllic Chinese-American Lesbian utopia (Flushing, Queens), Angela recounts watching a She-ro chef documentary and was genuinely all over the damn place. All this is followed up with a rousing and extremely Queer game of fuck, marry, kill that features celebs including Karla Souza, Ever Maynard, Gara Loning, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Sara Bareillis, and Busy Phillips. Darrell Castle talks about President Biden's commencement address to the graduating class at the United States Naval Academy last Friday and how his address reflects American foreign policy and the future service of those young Navy Ensigns and Marine Second Lieutenants as they go forth to project American power around the world. Transcription / Notes SCREAM LOUDLY AND CARRY NO STICK AT ALL Hello this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday the 3rd of June in the year of our Lord 2022 and in this Report, I will be talking about President Biden's commencement address to the graduating class at the United States Naval Academy this past Friday, May 27th as well as how that address reflects American foreign policy and the future service of those young Navy Ensigns, and Marine Second Lieutenants, as they go forth to project American power around the world. I can't begin this Report without reminding you that tomorrow June 4th is the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. That battle fought in the dark and desperate early months of World War ll changed the course of the War and the course of history in general.  Due to the sacrifice and courage of all those naval officers and men of the U.S. Navy, Japan's ultimate defeat became inevitable, but it took three more years of bloodshed and atomic horror before they would accept it. The President of the United States celebrated Memorial Day by delivering the commencement address to the graduating officers at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland on Friday May 27th. I'm not going to indulge you by making tired jokes about his slurred delivery, his confusion, his inability to pronounce words or to say the correct words because all that is old news now. He did make some terrible gaffes and he did continue his creepy habit of leaning over the podium and whispering. He did do a lot of literal screaming when talking about Russia to these young officers.  What he did not say was to me, far more important than what he did say. Just on a brief inventory he did not mention the 80th anniversary that I just discussed. It would have been a perfect time to tell them that a worthwhile goal for their naval careers would be to just begin to live up to the courage and sacrifice of those men at Midway. Most of these officers will undoubtably be posted to the Pacific where there is a growing threat of war with China thanks to his loose lips. He threatened war with China over Taiwan when answering a reporter's question in Japan. Would the U.S. military come to the aid of Taiwan in case of a Chinese attack? Yes, he said that's our commitment. I wonder if he is so far gone that he doesn't know that is not our commitment and never has been, unless of course he has changed it and was just announcing the change. He undid about 46 years of American policy and relative peace with China with one sentence. What is the most important job of a U.S. President? One might argue that it is to prevent nuclear war. This man seems unaware of that job requirement and is increasingly willing to roll the dice with Russia and China. Another thing he could have told the graduates is that you are going in harm's way, and you will be the tip of the spear delivering your aircraft and its ordinance where needed. China is a big problem now, thanks to my leadership and so, a lot will be demanded and expected of you, but I know you are up to it, and you have had the best training in the world to prepare. None of that was said of course, nothing to bolster them and to uplift them for the many years of service, apart from loved ones, that lies ahead of them. Instead, he chose to make the occasion about him instead of them. I'm certain he is unfamiliar with Teddy Roosevelt's line from which I drew the title of this Report. Walk softly and carry a big stick the Bull Moose famously said. By that line Roosevelt was emphasizing that diplomacy is the correct way to conduct international relations and the big stick sh...
