Happy Valentine's Day. I hope your day is smoother than mine—I'm running around trying to make this a special day for my wife and daughters. Bitcoin has surged past $50,000 level—but we're still in the early stages of this bull market. Last week, during Part 2 of my Crypto 2024 series, I explained why the next Bitcoin halving event will ignite several major crypto catalysts… and how to position yourself for windfall profits. The markets went into panic mode after yesterday's Consumer Price Index (CPI) data showed inflation is back. But some economists are already shrugging off the news. I go over some of the biggest risks investors are currently facing… and how to find winners in this volatile market. Ridesharing company Lyft (LYFT) surged over 60% after reporting earnings yesterday… before crashing back to Earth mere minutes later. I break down what caused the insane market movement… and question how the SEC allowed it to happen. Finally, I take a victory lap on my Super Bowl prediction. I hope you made my guaranteed bet. In the recent earnings call held on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024, Lyft executives presented key facts and insights. Here is a detailed report based on the call. Lyft's CEO, David Risher, reflected on the company's progress, stating, "Our team united around a vision - a vision for how focusing on customers can stimulate profitable growth. We established clear goals and accomplished them, leading us into the year with momentum. We're competitively executing our strategies, and offering attractive reasons for drivers and riders to opt for Lyft daily." The executive announced their latest investment in electric bikes, illustrating the company's strategy resonates with consumers' growing push for sustainable transport solutions. This initiative positions Lyft further on the pathway to crafting future strategies. Lyft's financial performance underscores the effectiveness of their strategic investments and concentration on customer experience. They have channeled investments into technology, improving operational capability, facilitating cost management, and aiding market expansion. The brand's rollout of new features such as shared rides and loyalty programs have also contributed significantly to customer acquisition and retention. As the team addressed consumer trends within the rideshare sector, Lyft's strategic moves were seen to align. They acknowledged the introduction of electric bikes as a response to growing consumer interest in sustainable transport options. The demand surge for electric vehicles underlines the appeal of such sustainable solutions. Their mention of users' tendencies toward more frequent, yet shorter rides, indicated potential shifts in rider habits — a crucial insight for Lyft to shape their product and marketing strategies. "Internal stakeholders play a major role in the company's success," Risher stated, highlighting the valuable contribution of Max Feldman, who is leading their Insurance and Risk Management. As per the information shared on the earnings call, Lyft's near-term strategies include expansion into new markets, both domestically and internationally. The brand aims to deploy autonomous vehicle technology, which is expected to enhance their service portfolio and pare down operating costs. Concurrently, investments continue in spheres of improving customer experiences, meticulous data analytics and research, and development — all echoing Lyft's commitment to growth and maintaining a competitive advantage. In conclusion, Lyft's strategies and investments, including the recent venture into electric bikes, demonstrate an understanding of consumer behavior and the escalation of sustainability trends. It's also critical, however, to view these developments in the light that these are part of the company's reasonable efforts to achieve sustained growth and extend their presence in the competitive ridesharing market. It's important to consider the evolving competitive landscape and regulatory environment when appraising Lyft's prospects. Join Nate and Mike for the second installment of their first ever two part podcast. The second part picks up with a discussion of boots on the ground research in former high flyer Michael Kors, and continues with a convenience store staple of the Midwest, Casy General Stores ($CASY). This leads to a discussion about sectors and industries, and specifically grocery and discount stores. A round of buy, sell, and hold with Costco ($COST), Target ($TGT), and WalMart ($WMT). No surprise, Nate and Mike have a difference of opinion. Apple ($AAPL) and Amazon ($AMZN) have been moving sideways for several months now, but this could be a good time to use the dollar cost average approach, and add to your positions. Facebook ($FB) has been a monster performer for Mike since buying at the IPO. He doesn't feel great about owning a company that doesn't align with his views, but did he sell or does he need more encouragement from Nate? This leads to a deep discussion on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing. As investors we have the opportunity to help shape the world. Two funds that address this are the Vanguard Social Index Mutual Fund ($VFTAX) https://investor.vanguard.com/mutual-funds/profile/VFTAX and Rachel Robasciotti's Social Justice ETF ($JSTC) https://www.adasinaetf.com/. Neither Nate or Mike are fans of the large banks, but fintech is an interesting space and a way to get exposure to cryptocurrency. A round of would you rather with Madtercard ($MA), Visa ($V), Square ($SQ), and Paypal $(PYPL) ensues. Are sport franchises like publicly traded companies, are coaches the CEO's, and would Phil Jackson be the G.O.A.T of CEO's? Are ride sharing and food delivery companies like Uber ($UBER), Lyft ($LYFT), Grub Hub ($GRUB), and Door Dash ($DASH) a lot like airlines such as United ($UAL) and Southwest ($LUV)? What are Mike's thoughts on Total Recall? All this and more!

FedEx (FDX) is one of the best companies in the logistics group, says Erin Gibbs of Gibbs Wealth Management. She says it has steady, stable growth, higher profits, and is reasonably priced. She would avoid Doordash (DASH) and Grubhub (GRUB). She discusses Lyft (LYFT) and Uber (UBER), saying that Lyft has beat on the top and bottom lines in the last two quarters, but sees Uber as the company for long-term growth.
Why JMP Securities CEO Mark Lehmann believes used car seller Vroom (VRM) has learned its lesson from missteps in 2020 and is convinced Vroom's sales team will find their e-commerce footing this year. General Motors (GM) faces off with Tesla (and Ford) with its plan to embrace an electric-vehicle future. Also, Lyft (LYFT) learns it doesn't always pay to be aggressive… at least when it comes to earnings statements. And oil giant Devon Energy (DV) decides to embrace a little more risk.
There are three sorts of stories we've gravitated towards in the past 95 episodes of Behind the Idea: Value traps and/or value plays, the sorts of junk we might invest in. Examples: Cars.com (CARS), AT&T (T), Dell (DELL), Kelloggs (K) from the short side. Growth stories that break our value-oriented brains. Examples: Amazon (AMZN), Shopify (SHOP), Crowdstrike (CRWD), Lyft (LYFT), PagerDuty (PD) from the short side. Battleground stories or news stories. Examples: Boeing (BA), PG&E (PCG), Chipotle (CMG), Trupanion (TRUP). This week we cover Teladoc (TDOC), which falls squarely in categories 2 and 3. The company is a fast grower on the top line, but it's yet to crack break even profitability metrics. We've published many short ideas on the company on Seeking Alpha, but we recently published a PRO+ top idea by Value Alpha that takes the long side. As with many of these stories, there are both exciting things going on and questions raised that deserve a closer look. We break down the long case, and then we raise our questions. Beyond assessing the Teladoc story itself, we also get into what we look for in growth stories like this, and what it means to invest in an execution based story. Topics Covered 3:00 - Assessing the long case 8:15 - Market leadership and the total addressable market story 13:45 - Teladoc's revenue model and Value Alpha's valuation model. 19:00 - Pricing vs. valuation rears its head 22:00 - Teladoc's industry position and is it a real moat? 27:45 - Valuation arbitrage and the messiness in the story 31:00 - What about the short case? 36:30 - The significance of the 'execution-based' story 40:00 - The reliance on acquisitions and the trends in visit fees. In Silicon Valley, there are hundreds of privately-held companies known as “unicorns.” That’s a term for a company that has a valuation of over $1 billion based on the last round of equity they sold to private investors. Many of these unicorns will continue to grow and increase in value. Others will fail. A handful will go public. A few have already gone public this year, with more on the way. Some of the biggest names this year have been the ride-sharing companies. In this space, the biggest company in terms of market share is Uber (UBER). However, it let competitor Lyft (LYFT) go public first—and given how Lyft shares have failed to rise past their initial publicly-traded price, Uber shares look likely to do the same.Given how Uber’s market valuation is nearly $60 billion in spite of a weak IPO, however, investors may want to look elsewhere. At a $60 billion valuation, the company still doesn’t make money, and has even indicated that it may never make money. That doesn’t mean it will fail anytime soon, but it does mean that the best thing Uber can do for folks is save them money on rides compared to cabs.Investors looking to tackle a high-valued company going public would be best to look elsewhere and away from bigger and more well-known names to avoid the risk that comes from buying a highly-valued firm to begin with. One alternative is Beyond Meat (BYND). Although the company just went public and its shares have doubled, its overall valuation is more reasonable. It’s on track to move from generating revenue to actually making a profit and having earnings for investors. And it’s just scratched the surface of its market potential in plant-based meat alternatives. That’s a far cry from the saturated ride-share market where the biggest names went public at hefty valuations. In investing as in time, it’s all relative. And relative valuations matter. If you’re looking for a new play in today’s booming market, look no further than some of the smaller IPO plays out there like Beyond Meat. Not sure the best way to get started? Is Uber and Lyft Stock Worth It? You can't really say it's been a rough IPO market, with many names performing quite well since going public. Zoom Video (ZM) , Pinterest (PINS) and others have been strong thus far. However, we can say it's been a rough IPO market for ride-hailing services as both Uber (UBER) and Lyft (LYFT) have seen strong selling pressure since making their debuts. Lyft opened for trading near $88 in late March and is quickly down $40 a share six weeks later to $48 on Monday. The stock is down about 6% on the day and is making new 52-week lows on the session. Uber isn't far behind, with shares down more than 11% on the day to $37. Shares are making new lows and are well below the $45 IPO price at this point. If fact, both stocks have similar action two days in, with the exception that Lyft opened well above its IPO price before fading lower. It's got investors shaking their head and asking, "What's Uber stock really worth?" Unfortunately, that's not such an easy answer. Granted, Uber couldn't have gone public at a worse time -- at least in the short term. That said, even when the market was posting a big upside reversal on Friday, the day Uber went public, the ride-hailing stock couldn't even bounce back over its IPO price. In the buildup to Uber's IPO, the company was looking to fetch a valuation as high as $120 billion. That would ensure that even its latest round of investors -- for which there have been so many rounds for a private company -- would be able to exit with a handsome profit. After seeing the reaction to Lyft's IPO, Uber had to become more conservative with its IPO but was still aiming for a $90 billion to $100 billion valuation. At one point, valuation expert Aswath Damodaran of NYU said the company is worth much less than that, pegging its valuation at around $60 billion. That puts the company at about 5.3 times 2018 total revenue, which grew almost 40% from the prior year. "If there is anything positive that can be extracted from this table [referencing Uber's annual EBITDA data], it is that the losses are decreasing as a percent of sales, over time," he wrote. Uber's a tough one because there aren't many comps on the public market. Besides Lyft, what else do we compare it to that's a U.S. traded stock? All investors have to go on is Lyft's recent performance and earnings result. There's also the fact that they both lose a lot of money. In 2018, the company had an operating loss of $2.8 billion and while that's improvement from the prior year's operating loss of $3.8 billion, it's still a big concern. In this type of market where investors have more questions than answers, companies like Uber fall into the sell first, examine later pile. Will we see the 40%+ beating that we've seen in Lyft? If so, that would bring Uber below $30 a share and its market cap down below $50 billion, as its market cap presently hovers near $62 billion. While that may seem like an unlikely scenario, just remember how far the stock has fallen thus far. Should the market selling accelerate in the coming days and weeks, it doesn't look like Uber stock will be a safe place to hide. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carterfarrpodcast/support

We’ve all heard of, and probably occasionally use Uber for quick and easy transportation. But have you ever heard of Lyft? Lyft is a ride sharing company, like Uber, but smaller and less known. Recently, Lyft’s stocks became available to the general public for investments and trading, but just because you can, does that mean you should? Today Kate Stalter explains why trend investments aren’t always a good idea, along with why smaller companies are sometimes more promising. Tune into this episode of Better Money Decisions to learn why well-known companies, despite gaining popularity, aren’t always the safest or most profitable investment. Show Highlights: Why companies go public with shares How investors are rewarded from small companies going public Why popular companies aren’t always a good investment What makes picking IPO's risky Reasons why you shouldn’t jump into trading because it goes public The reality of stocks when companies settle back into real sales and earnings expectations Better ways to get your retirement plan aligned with your goals Links: Got investing questions you’d like me to answer on the show?
