A conversation with Grammy-winning music producer, engineer and Playing For Change co-founder, Mark Johnson - https://playingforchange.com
Send us a textIn today's episode, we look at how social media gives us a grab-bag of people's memories of stars and some who weren't quite so successful, or scarcely successful at all. Nonetheless, they are remembered by some and lionised on social media. The other side of "on-line" is the channels that present video imagery of any and everything, such as YouTube, TikTok and so on. Jeff presents a bunch of interesting links for you to investigate. In “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, we lament the passing of such greats as David Sanbourn, John Mayall, as well as a couple of guys who have played beneath the radar for most of their career but still worked with giants like Frank Zappa, Jean-Luc Ponty, Ray Charles, Steve Hackett, and many others. Our “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is John Mayall's “Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton” from 1966. The album featured John Mayall, Eric Clapton, John McVie (Fleetwood Mac) and Hughie Flint (Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band) and marks the start of Clapton's legend as a British guitar god. Today's episode starts off the an unexpected lesson in pronunciation and anglicization of names. But the real story: Andrew Wang has a career rather unrelated to music. He decided to learn guitar, however, and found himself experiencing serious stage fright when he played in front of people. Ring a bell with you? Start a new project as an adult only to realize doing it in front of people was nerve-wracking. Andy chose a genre of music that was relatively popular but with very few musicians playing it live. The invitations to play started to come in. It's hard to say No to a cousin's wedding. When you keep saying Yes… where can that lead you? Andy shares several stories about saying Yes, and has a great philosophy about sharing our gifts. AND he ties it back to retirement. Stay tuned to the end when I ask Andy a question from out of left field! A wonderful conversation with a delightful person. Andy mentioned "Playing For Change": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Us-TVg40ExM Find the musical Andy at https://www.andywangmusic.com/ Read more at: https://boomwithabang.com/andy-wang-on-dealing-with-stage-fright/
I'm wicked excited because today on The Karen Kenney Show, I'm talking to one of my beloved mentors, the multi-award-winning author and in my own words “super-duper smarty pants”, Melissa Tiers!Melissa is the founder of the Center for Integrative Hypnosis in New York and it's been said about her, “When it comes to coaching and the brain, Melissa Tiers is known as ‘the teachers' teacher' all over the world.”So when I had a chance to work with her to expand and deepen my own skill set, to experience her magic and to get certified in Integrative Hypnosis and “coaching the unconscious mind” - it was a total no brainer!Melissa is hands down one of the most curious people you'll ever meet.I would even say that it's her enthusiastic curiosity that first brought and now keeps Melissa as a sought after-hypnotist, and one of the top brilliant minds and thought leaders in her field of work. She's always fascinated by about altered states of consciousness, the limits of everyday human perceptions and how we can learn to bend and shape them.Even after writing four books (three of them award-winning), teaching all over the planet and with decades of studying, intense seeking, and hands on experience on the topic of the unconscious mind, she'll still tell you that she doesn't know it all. She knows that there is always room to expand her knowledge, research and experiment further and continue to play in this area of neuroscience that can, does and will make a difference for humanity in an ongoing way. It's this beautiful blend of compassion, confidence, and curiosity that first attracted me to her as a teacher (that along with her NY accent and her liberal use of adult language) and keeps her as someone that I'm thrilled to get to study with and continue to learn from! Are you curious now too? Episode 101 is coming out as a celebration of my little girl becoming a not so little girl anymore. We have done the parental thing: we've blinked our eyes and this little human that was seriously just taking her first steps and just saying her first word is now turning 13 years old. How in the world does this happen? I don't even personally know Doc Brown, so how would I have borrowed his Delorean and accelerated it to 88 to get to where we are now?!So, the cliche is true. They all may be true: time flies. Your kids get older so quickly. Who are these wives and why are all of their tales so spot on?! This is a shorter than normal episode as I tell a little bit about how things were for me as a teenager as I celebrate the milestone birthday of my "baby girl". The show starts out with John sharing a story about an extremely large flying squirrel thought to have been extinct in the Himalayas, which then leads to conversation with Liu Yan about other animals that have been assumed extinct, only to be found alive in some remote location. John manages to work his impressions of John Wayne and broadcaster Harry Caray into this episode, as well as a couple of songs from The Four Tops and Playing For Change, to keep things moving along.
Super Producer Cimcie joins in the conversation, per John's request as the resident "stegosaurus" looking for pop culture back-up. Liu Yan adds his thoughts about the upcoming Marvel movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. A deeper discussion continues about the influence of movies on our lives and John manages to drop the needle on "Love Train" by the Playing For Change project to keep things moving along. Finally, the big question surfaces-"Who is the best Batman?"
It's a mixture of listener's requests, and host favorites, including "Sunshine on My Shoulders" and "We Can Be Kind." Heyang offers up her favorites, starting with Alicia Keys and Brandi Carlile, Patti LaBelle and The Blaxy Girls. John drops the needle on LaVern Baker and Playing For Change's version of "Love Train." The Bridge, bringing the world together, one song at a time.
Born in 2002 as a shared vision between co-founders, Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, the idea was to hit the streets of America with a mobile recording studio and cameras in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people. This musical journey resulted in the award-winning documentary, “A Cinematic Discovery of Street Music.” The documentary inspired them to unite many of the greatest musicians we met throughout our journey and form Playing For Change. John has been waiting a decade to have a conversation with Mark Johnson about the incredible impact PFC has made, and Heyang shares her thoughts after hearing the re-worked versions of classics like "Take Me Home, Country Roads" "LaBamba" "Love Train" and "The Weight."
It’s impossible. A horn section in Burkina Faso backs a string quartet in Lyon, France, together with guitarists in Nepal and Madrid while a choir in Manila supports the singer in Haiti and an African kora soloist, and we aren’t halfway through the video. Everyone plays outside, in city streets, courtyards, in front of temples, in marketplaces, train yards, beaches, jungles and deserts, visuals that immediately impart a compelling sense of that place. Each player brings nuances from their own musical culture, resulting in a fresh and distinct feel. One could write a book just about these rhythmic confluences. As a Playing For Change Foundation school teacher observed, “it’s where all cultural diversities collide into one beautiful harmony.”Informed by years of recording studio experience and powered by his love and utter faith in music, Mark Johnson pursued his vision of traveling songs around the world to bring people together. Along with co-founder Whitney Kroenke Silverstein, they’ve grown a single such video, “Stand By Me,” into an international movement. It’s a new art form, a sound engineer’s vision. And in this moment that finds us isolated by Covid and wounded by the toxins coursing through our social media, they prove that such technology can also unite through the intimacy and immediacy of music. The hundreds of songs he’s recorded and filmed take many forms. Some for the pure joy of music, some for healing by embracing different sides within a violence-torn country like Colombia, or between musicians at home and expatriated across the world as with Cuba, or between Israelis and Palestinians, or only with children. In the process they have recorded more than 1200 musicians in over sixty countries, generated over a billion YouTube hits, created a touring band, founded the Playing For Change Foundation — a separate 501(c)(3) organization that currently supports fifteen music and arts schools in eleven countries, and partnered with the UN for a global virtual event in celebration of their 75th anniversary.Today we talk with Mark about how he made all this happen, building schools, producing concerts and especially his trust in music and what it’s like to circle the globe with songs in search of musicians and dancers. Please check out both their organization and foundation websites (links in the show notes below) to read about their many awards, videos, partners, and supporters. “It’s an unbroken chain of human connectivity, one to the next that keeps going around and around the world.”
From the West Indies to West Africa, Reggae has spread to many countries across the world, often incorporating local instruments and joining with other styles. In 1973, the film The Harder They Come starring Jimmy Cliff was released and introduced Jamaican music to cinema audiences outside Jamaica. Reggae in Africa was much boosted by the visit of Bob Marley to Zimbabwe on Independence Day in April 1980. Nigerian reggae had developed in the 1970s. In South Africa, reggae music has played a unifying role amongst cultural groups in Cape Town. ----- In this episode you’ll hear: 1) Jamming by Bob Marley & The Wailers 2) Montego Bay by Amazulu 3) Reggae Got Soul by Toots (Hibbert) & The Maytals (with Ken Boothe & Marcia Griffith) 4) Arrival by Jimmy Cliff 5) Redemption Song by Wyclef Jean 6) Trickster by Johnny Osbourne 7) What's True by Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers 8) Hey Love by Inner Circle 9) War/No More Trouble by Playing For Change (with Bono and Bob Marley) 10) Groovin' (Out On Life) by UB40 11) My Number One by Gregory Peck 12) Satisfaction by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires & Friends 13) You're No Good by Ken Boothe 14) Rock Me Baby by Johnny Nash 15) No Woman, No Cry by Fugees 16) Many Rivers To Cross by Jimmy Cliff ************* Join the conversation on Facebook at ---- https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 ----- or by email at: ----- dannymemorylane@gmail.com

Of the many tear-inducing moments on This Is Us, one of the most powerful comes on the 2017 "Memphis" episode under the song "We Can Always Come Back To This," used in a scene where the cancer-stricken William is comforted by his son. Chris Pierce co-wrote that song, drawing inspiration from the death of his father.Pierce has made a name for himself as a singer and songwriter who can pack a musical wallop, endearing himself to music supervisors who have used his tunes in True Blood, Rosewood, Soul Men, and many other movies and TV shows.

As we begin Season 3 of Vietnam War: The Music, I sincerely hope that you’ve enjoyed the music so far. Please let a friend know about our podcasts and share your thoughts with us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100008232395712 **** or by email at dannymemorylane@gmail.com ***** Music was a big part of a soldier’s down time that centered within the clubs and hooches of Vietnam. The music that was popular during the Vietnam War was, and is still, therapy. There are songs you can remember, and then there are songs you REALLY remember. Many of these songs will have a special meaning for you. ***** Our goal with The Vietnam War: The Music is to honor the fallen and the survivors with the music that got them through “just one more day”. Our shows are broadcast around the world. They say thank you & “welcome home” to all Vietnam Vets. There is no opinion offered on the War. It’s all about the music. For your service and your sacrifice, THANK YOU. The Story Of Sister Rosetta Tharpe (March 20, 1915 – October 9, 1973) an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and recording artist. a pioneer in her guitar technique; she among the first popular recording artists to use heavy distortion on her electric guitar, presaging the rise of electric blues. Playing For Change (PFC) is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music, born from the shared belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people. The primary focus of PFC is to record and film musicians performing in their natural environments and combine their talents and cultural power in innovative videos called Songs Around The World. Creating these videos motivated PFC to form the Playing For Change Band—a tangible, traveling representation of its mission, featuring musicians met along their journey; and establish the Playing For Change Foundation—a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world. Through these efforts, Playing For Change aims to create hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

Back in 2010, Peace Talks Radio did a program of an especially creative joining of music and peace. An outfit called Playing For Change was flying around the globe to record an eclectic collection of musicians playing together on some popular songs to promote the power of music to bring us together. In fact the Playing for Change motto was Peace Through Music. In the years since the first big Playing For Change video ("Stand By Me"), and that early report by us here at Peace Talks Radio, Playing for Change has continued to add to its collection of amazing worldwide performances. We'll hear some of the tracks from the project's 2018 CD called Listen To The Music, which included the title cut with members of the original Doobie Brothers who recorded it first in the 1970's, and again added musicians from around the world contributing to the track. Again, we got Playing For Change producer Mark Johnson on the line with us from California to update us on the project. Paul Ingles hosts

Last week, we had the pleasure of joining our new sponsor, TIAA Bank in Vail Colorado for the GoPro Mountain Games. It was an incredible weekend all around. We did some trail running, mud running, yoga and climbing. We got to watch whitewater kayaking, slackline and even doggie long jumping! By far, though, the highlight for me was getting to hang with one of our favorite bands, Playing for Change. Playing for Change is an incredible organization that aims to bring people together through music. They produce truly incredible videos, weaving together people, all over the world, performing some of our favorite songs. Below are videos from some of my favorite. I first found Playing for Change about five years ago when I stumbled upon their performance of Gimme Shelter on YouTube. From there, I was quickly down the rabbit hole into all their other videos as well. Then a few months later, I met their founder Whitney Kroenke at a conference. Turns out she and I went to college together and had some mutual friends. So we connected the dots and have become friendly ourselves over the years. So, when I saw that they were performing in Vail last week, I was really excited. I went to the show on Friday night and saw Whitney's co-founder, Mark Johnson, who invited me backstage to meet the band. (I've never been that cool before!) He also invited me to meet them on Saturday as they played a few performances around Vail Village to promote their show that evening. So, this podcast is basically my Saturday hanging with Playing for Change. Here's the setlist: Intro: Three Little Birds (at the top of the Vail Gondola, a bit out of order) Jam Session at the Base of the Mountain Interview with PFC Co-Founder, Mark Johnson Gondola Ride with Jason Tamba (Democratic Republic of Congo) and Pablo Correa (Colombia) (video below) Stories of Me with Chance Powell Featuring Emelise (a 12 year-old girl playing in Vail Village) Saturday Night Live (two songs from their Saturday Night Show) Shakedown Jam Session This was one of the most fun days I've ever had. Here are some half-baked thoughts I've had since meditating on the experience: What unites us is stronger than what divides us. The diversity in the band– which you'll hear in their individual performances– is what makes them so awesome together. The power of Chance. It was purely chance that I discovered PFC so many years ago. And purely chance that I met Whitney at that conference. And purely chance that TIAA Bank discovered us and invited us to share such an incredible weekend with them. And purely chance that PFC would be there in Vail that same weekend. I'm grateful for how all those chances came together into one of the most memorable experiences in my life. And it's not lost on me that one of the band members' name is “Chance”. You'll get to meet Chance in the podcast, hear his incredible talent, and also two takes on his story– about how chance played a role in his own life too. It's also not lost on me that I had this experience at Vail– one of the most visually beautiful places in the world– during the GoPro Mountain Games– some of the most visually spectacular events in the world. Yet, with all the beauty there was to see, the most beautiful part of my weekend is what I heard. I'm dedicating this podcast to my 21 month-old son, Max. Max LOVES music– and loves PFC. I let him watch their YouTube videos all the time. He becomes entranced, dances and even shouts “Yay” at the end of the songs. Max also loves to play the drums and guitar. And whether or not he ever develops any talent (not a strong gene pool there), I do hope he keeps his love of music. And I hope that, thanks to the work of PFC and other organizations like them, he grows up in a more tolerant, just and peaceful world. Huge thanks to Mark and the band for making me feel so welcome last weekend. #EveryMileMatters Here are some videos I took during the weekend, the videos referenced in the podcast, and a few others that I really like: Subscribe on iTunes / Subscribe on Stitcher / Subscribe on Google Play The post Playing For Change (Featuring Emelise): When The Music Comes Around appeared first on Charity Miles.

17 million views on You Tube to date. That's the number of times the unique rendition of the song "Stand By Me" has been seen on the internet. The song featured contributions from street musicians and indigenous performers around the world, all playing to the same basic track recorded in Santa Monica, CA by music producer and engineer Mark Johnson. The good vibe from the collaboration inspired a whole CD called Songs Around The World, a DVD called Peace Through Music, a live tour, and a non-profit organization called the Playing For Change Foundation that has raised money to build music schools in developing countries. Can a project like this really promote peace in a noticeable way? On this edition of Peace Talks Radio, Carol Boss talks with both Mark Johnson and Whitney Burditt of Playing for Change, as well as with two of the music performers - Clarence Bekker from The Netherlands and Mermans Kenkosenki from South Africa - about this remarkable project.

There are films that leave you hanging or make you quietly introspective, but Playing For Change: Peace Through Music is a film that lingers in your musical soul. A NYC World Premiere, each song has over 35 musicians around the world – who have never met– playing in their own environment.
