Through mindfulness, I've learned that those emotions are stored in the body and you can't run from them. Those emotions will come out. It could be in the form of shingles and anxiety attacks which I've had. You can't run from that kind of stuff. It stays in there. It Will metastasize cells into skin cancer. We've seen that happen twice actually with my wife. Stress and those emotions don't run away. Thoughts on Breathing The reason why in meditation we focus on our breath blew my mind when I first started practicing meditation. We focus on our breath because the only place that we can breathe is in the present moment. If we're trying to cultivate presence through meditation, all we have to do is focus on our breath. Close your eyes, feel your chest move in and out. When I first learned that, it was the biggest aha moment for me. I was sent to Boston with no cost-of-living adjustment and just two weeks of PTO. During the holidays, I asked my manager if I could work from our home office to spend more time with family. He yelled, questioning why I thought I was special. I pushed back aggressively, feeling cornered. Looking back, I cringe. If I'd practiced mindfulness, I'd have responded with more compassion—for myself and for him—and likely managed the situation better. KeywordsResilience - Burnout – Retreats - Mindfulness - Wellness - Self-discovery - ROIIn this episode of Resilience Unravelled Max Schneider from Sand and Salt Escapes shares his experience of burnout and how it led him to create a solution to help others going through similar issues. He discusses how he initially struggled to recognise and address his burnout, explaining that his high-achieving and competitive nature led him to push through physical and emotional signs of exhaustion. A significant turning point came when he developed shingles at 27, a symptom he now recognises as a warning sign of burnout. During a trip to Costa Rica, Max realised he needed to make a change and when Max and his wife returned from their trip, they left their jobs and started a process of self-discovery. He realised that his own behaviours and mindsets, rather than external factors, led to his burnout and took responsibility for his actions and sought therapy to understand his brain's wiring and learn how to manage it. He also found mindfulness and meditation helpful tools to prevent future burnout. This experience led him to create something to assist others who are experiencing disconnection, loss of identity, or burnout. Main topicsThe rising issue of burnout in many cultures and the potential solutionsThe importance of self-reflection, therapy, and mindfulnessThe cultural pressure in organisations that often fuel burnout The value and challenges of implementing workplace wellness programmesShifting organisational responsibility towards caring for top talent The difficulty in calculating the return on investment (ROI) for such programmesThe challenge of getting CEOs to fund such initiatives for all employeesThe benefits of retreats with a focus on mindfulness, self-discovery, and connectionAction itemsYou can find out more about Max at sandandsaltescapes.com or through LinkedIn or Instagram
Your host, Sri Chellappa, talks with the Founder of Sand & Salt Escapes, Max Schneider. Burnout is a term we hear often, but what does it truly look like? For Max, it was a harrowing experience marked by anxiety attacks and physical manifestations like shingles. The root cause? There is a misalignment between his personal values and his work. This internal conflict, coupled with a disregard for the importance of rest, led him down a path of mental and physical exhaustion. As a consultant with over a decade of experience, Max has witnessed the unique pressures that leaders face. They absorb the emotional weight of their teams, striving to meet high expectations while navigating complex interpersonal dynamics. This relentless pursuit of performance can be a one-way ticket to burnout, affecting not just the individual leader but the entire organization.Max's advice to companies is unequivocal: prioritize the well-being of your talent, especially your leaders. It's not about superficial perks; it's about a fundamental shift in how we support high performers. Engaged employees who feel cared for are less likely to leave, making well-being a strategic investment. To learn more about Max's work, click HERE and HERE.Think you'd be a great guest on the show? Max Schneider, USGS ESC Public communication for a region’s seismic hazard and aftershock forecasts is often done using maps. But the public products released by scientists are not always built with best practices in visualization or cartography, nor are they empirically validated with rigorous user experiments. In this talk, I will present several projects that investigate how different visualization approaches can affect public understanding of seismic hazard and aftershock risk. First, I consider how seismic hazard can be mapped to comply with research-backed best practices in color selection, legend design and classification of the continuous hazard distribution onto a discrete color map. I apply these best practices to redesign the German seismic hazard map and evaluate it against the original map in a controlled user experiment. The redesigned map improves perception of key principles of hazard, including that it is not spatially concentrated only around areas with previous earthquakes. Next, I evaluate the effectiveness of three techniques for displaying the uncertainty in aftershock forecast maps. In an experiment, participants perform a comparative judgment task, which measures whether a visualization can succeed in reaching two key communication goals: indicating where an aftershock is either highly likely or highly unlikely (“sure bets”) and where the forecast is low but the uncertainty is high enough to imply potential risk (“potential surprises”). All visualizations perform equally well in the goal of communicating “sure bet’’ situations. But the visualization that shows uncertainty using lower and upper bounds significantly outperforms the others at communicating “potential surprises.” I conclude with an outlook on my postdoctoral research on creating and testing visual products for aftershock forecasting at the USGS.

A Video Version of this is available on Youtube!ABOUT MAX:Max Schneider has really only just started out in what will be a very bright career. He has had some incredible internships, notably Mercedes Benz in Sindelfingen and Audi’s Advanced Design Center in Munich. Max has also been a finalist in multiple design competitions and won the Rimac Design Challenge. Max is most definitely a petrol-head and likes to build things and see how they work. He is a former Polo Cup Race driver and also a competitive drone pilot. Not one to be pigeon-holed, he most certainly is dynamic in his thought process. He loves coming up with new Hypercar Concepts as much as anyone, but he also considers himself to be part of the new generation of designers that are constantly pushing the envelope with regards to Future Mobility. Evidence of this can be seen in his student project, Teemo, that he developed at Volkswagen’s Future Center in Potsdam. While he had multiple options available to him in his native Germany, he opted for a move across the world in a completely alien environment that is Japan. He is entering his 3rd year as a professional designer and currently resides in Tokyo. Student athletes are a huge part of campus life at any university, but especially here at Vanderbilt. On this episode of VandyVox, Max Schneider tackles the implications of the NCAA Fair Pay to Play Act in California by interviewing USC defensive tackle, Trevor Trout, through his sports podcast Flag on the Play. Max dives right in, allowing Trevor to immerse the audience in the day-to-day life of a college athlete and the double-standards that accompany that contract. Not afraid to address controversy head-on, Max creates a space that allows Trevor to speak freely about his experience with the NCAA that brings a sense of gravitas, frustration, and authenticity to the topic. Max, who is also involved with Hustler Sports 30 and 615 Sports Drive on VandyRadio, used Flag on the Play for a course in Communication Studies taught by professor Claire Sisco King. Professor King highlights the interconnectivity of what we communicate and how we communicate and encourages her students to focus on human-centered design while “creating their own public-facing communicative artifacts.” To read the full excerpt from Professor King’s Syllabus, or if you want to be directed to more of Max’s audio work, please refer to the show notes.
Paul is joined by student reporter Max Schneider of the VU Hustler. Plus, final calls of the day.
Chris, Erika, Aaron and Chase all speak with Max Schneider, assistant sports editor for the Vanderbilt Hustle, about UK's upcoming game with Vanderbilt. They also go into the Big Blue Madness routines, and try to figure out why a dunk contest or three-point shootout wasn't implemented earlier.

(photo credit: Jade Ehlers) This week, I'm joined by singer, songwriter and actor Max Schneider, known as MAX. You might have seen him out on the road this summer with Fall Out Boy and Wiz Khalifa, or on YouTube, where he's a prolific cover artist. MAX truly does it all. He got his start on Broadway before moving to Nickelodeon, where he starred in the show How To Rock. His new EP, Ms. Anonymous, was recently released on Pete Wentz's DCD2 label, and MAX has a part in the film Love & Mercy, a biopic about Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson. I caught up with MAX to chat about his early days, how rejection at a young age affects his art today, his odd couple friendship with Rancid's Tim Armstrong, and much more. Thanks for listening! ---------- MAX's Twitter | Facebook Ms. Anonymous on iTunes Voice & Verse Podcast on iTunes | Stitcher | Twitter | Facebook
