In this episode of the Beyond Body Show, Jen explores the themes of self-sabotage, all or nothing mindset, and practical strategies for sustainable health. She emphasizes the importance of understanding resistance as a protective mechanism rather than a flaw, and introduces the WOOP Method as a tool for overcoming obstacles. The conversation encourages listeners to visualize their future selves and to approach their health journeys with clarity and intention rather than strict discipline.

In this episode of the Advancing Women Podcast, we explore toxic positivity; a phenomenon where positivity is used to minimize one's experience, and how this has been painfully exacerbated because of social media which thrives on toxically optimistic outlooks. Toxic positivity has perpetuated a brushing over of the real inequities and challenges many women face. With empowerment language forced upon us, there can be a false reality that leaves too many talented, empowered women, confused when our “positive vibes” aren't enough to transcend very real gender bias and inequity in the workplace. Just as it is not healthy to think overly negative thoughts, exaggeratedly positive thoughts can be equally detrimental! Enter Mental Contrasting…A far more efficacious approach. Mental contrasting is a technique that can help us achieve our goals by encouraging us to identify barriers and take the necessary steps to address obstacles rather than optimistically assuming that what we want and even deserve will materialize with positive thinking and hard work alone. In Utilitarian (as opposed to Ethical) thought, the end always justifies the means. If the end, for instance, is obtaining a million dollars, the Utilitarian man will lie, cheat and steal to get it. The means don’t matter to him, just the end. To the ethical man, the means are of the utmost importance. In ... The post Mental Contrasting appeared first on The New American.

This episode is a discussion on mental contrasting, a self-regulation strategy related to goal-achievement based on the work of Gabriele Oettingen. Mental contrasting and WOOP (wish, outcome, obstacle, plan) help individuals establish plans for the obstacles that they expect to encounter. In this conversation, Brian and Josh discuss how this concept can be applied to tennis matches and review some of the common obstacles that tennis players will inevitably encounter. To learn more about Josh and Brian's backgrounds and sport psychology businesses, go to TiebreakerPsych.com and PerformanceXtra.com. In this episode of My Extra Mile, Shawn and Kari-Lyn Owen share a philosophy you can embed in everyday decisions to move you forward in your life. It helps you view your setbacks and obstacles differently so that the biggest setbacks can be some of your greatest learning lessons. You can have the greatest why, but if you can't identify and work through your obstacles, it's far harder to reach your goals. They share the powerful framework that helped them start reaching their goals in 4 simple steps. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... The ‘WOOP' principal that Shawn and Kari-Lyn live by How to identify and overcome obstacles How WOOP can be applied to simple and extraordinary goals How to recapture the art of dreaming The process of self-discovery to reach your inner struggles How to integrate this framework into your life How to start small and work your way to larger goals How to utilize this strategy with your family ‘WOOP' is a 4-step system created by Gabriele Oettingen that is professionally referred to as Mental Contrasting with Implementation Intentions (MCII). It's a well-researched way to help YOU achieve your goals. How does it work? W: What is your ultimate Wish? O: What is the Outcome of that wish? O: What are the Obstacles that stand in your way? P: What plan will you implement to overcome those obstacles? Before implementing this system in their life, Shawn & Kari-Lyn never felt prepared for major obstacles. This was their missing piece. Human beings tend to look at success stories and see the result. You don't see all of the muck in the middle. Shawn points out that when you look at the obstacles you've overcome, that's where the richness comes from. You don't love it in the moment because you can't see the end. But those obstacles are where the breakthroughs happen. He states that “You can't create success without having some challenge along the way.” You must identify obstacles to overcome them When you know the obstacles that could be in your path you can plan for them. Shawn and Kari-Lyn emphasize that you must have a strong enough desire to succeed. Working through the obstacles needs to feel worth it. If the outcome of your wish isn't strong enough to overcome the obstacle, it won't happen. What does your wish look like? What will it feel like for yourself? Your family? Break the obstacles down into mini obstacles. Do you believe you can do this? Shawn and Kari-Lyn share the extraordinary goal that they're working toward and how they break the process don't. Listen to hear what their process looks like! Stop using external excuses to hide an internal struggle Shawn believes that most people start with an external excuse such as “I don't have enough time” or “I don't have enough money.” But those external excuses always come down to an internal issue. Most core issues stem from a belief that you aren't worthy or aren't good enough. It takes a brave person to allow themselves to go to that level. They emphasize that you need to look for patterns. When else do these excuses show up in your life? When has this happened in the past? Was there a life-defining moment in your childhood where your internal conversation became “I'm not good enough” or “I'm not lovable?” When you know the root cause you can acknowledge what's happening and look at your behavior to decipher: Is this moving me towards my goal? Or away from my goal? Implement this strategy in everyday life Just like anything else, incorporating this into your life takes practice. It's just like an athletic coach who doesn't start a beginner with something they'd expect an expert to do. Shawn suggests starting with something small. As you begin to reach those small goals, it motivates you to continue reaching towards the large goals. Look for evidence that this works with something simple. Get the little wins, build the muscle, and then aim for bigger goals. Their final piece of advice? Whatever is happening, you can do one thing every day to push towards your goals. Psychologist, researcher and author Gabriele Oettingen, PhD. has been studying human behaviour for over 30 years, with a focus on goal setting and turning positive fantasies into reality. She has written over 150 scientific articles and book chapters relating to social and personality psychology, developmental and educational psychology, and health and clinical psychology on the topics of thinking about the future and the control of cognition, emotion, and behaviour. During the course of her research, Dr. Oettingen has concluded that positive thinking in itself, while popular, is unlikely to result in desired outcomes. Instead, she offers Mental Contrasting, an empirically validated process, helping people not just to identify their goals but to manifest them in all areas of life, including health, career, academics, and relationships. In this interview, she shares her simple yet powerful 4-step WOOP strategy, along with tips for maximising its efficacy. Did you know there’s an equation for Procrastination? Yep. Expectancy x Value / Impulsiveness x Delay = Motivation. Thank you, Piers Steel. In this great book, Piers (a leading researcher on the science of motivation/procrastination) walks us thru the power of that equation. Big Ideas we explore include: Mental Contrasting (and why it beats creative visualization), goal setting (3 scientific keys) and how to add a month of productivity to your year.

Creative visualization sounds good but science says it's not so hot. Get excited about your ideal future AND contrast that with your current reality. But only if you want to succeed more.

This week we talk to Gabriele Oettingen about rethinking positive thinking. Gabriele Oettingen is a Professor of Psychology at New York University and the University of Hamburg. She is the author of more than a 100 articles and book chapters on thinking about the future and the control of cognition, emotion, and behavior. She received her Ph.D. from the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and the Max Planck Institute for Behavioral Physiology in Seewiesen, Germany. Her major contribution to the field is research on the perils of positive thinking and on Mental Contrasting, a self-regulation technique that is effective for mastering one's everyday life and long-term development. Gabriele Oettingen's work is published in social and personality psychology, developmental and educational psychology, in health and clinical psychology, in organizational and consumer psychology, as well as in neuropsychological and medical journals. Her findings contribute to the burgeoning literature on life style change and businesses and institutions have increasingly become interested in the application of her research. Her first trade book, RETHINKING POSITIVE THINKING: Inside the New Science of Motivation was published in October 2014. In This Interview Gabriele and I Discuss... The One You Feed parable. How positive thinking can lead to worse results. How just fantasizing makes it less likely that those fantasies come true. What mental contrasting is. Using mental contrasting to increase your likelihood of success. How envisioning our obstacles can make us more likely to achieve the goals. What implementation intention is and how to use it in your life. The WOOP method- Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. Using WOOP to bring about success in our lives. How WOOP works on the unconscious mind. Eric gets WOOP'ed.
