Jill and Tom opened the show by talking about Toyota's new-for-2026 electric-vehicle lineup. The changes include revised model names, and smaller and larger companions for the maker's existing—and also updated—bZ compact EV. Tom talked about a recently published article which claims that the Tesla Cybertruck is wearing through tires in as little as 7000 miles. Per the article, replacement tires cost around $400 each. Tom also noted an interesting news piece suggesting that German consumers are not open to purchasing Chinese-brand EVs. Listen in for details. Still in the first segment, Jill shared her impressions of the all-new Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. Both vehicles have been treated to fresh styling and updated infotainment systems. In the second segment Jill and Tom welcome Dan Passe of Passe Consulting to the program. With a communications resume that includes both Nissan and Nikola, Dan talked about the difference between legacy automakers and start-up companies. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “25 MPG!” quiz. Tom wrapped up the show with a list of the best-selling vehicles in the premium large-SUV segment.
In this episode, host Jack Nerad and guest co-host Matt DeLorenzo take listeners behind the wheels of two high-end 2025 SUVs—the all-new 2025 Lincoln Navigator and the 2025 Genesis GV80 3.5T. Both vehicles demonstrate clearly that today's automakers are pulling out all the stops in the quest to entice luxury SUV buyers. First up is Matt DeLorenzo's review of the 2025 Lincoln Navigator, which continues to push boundaries in the full-size luxury SUV segment. The heavily revised Navigator retains its twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, now offering slightly more power and improved fuel efficiency. Key updates for 2025 include enhanced ActiveGlide hands-free driving capability, a larger infotainment system, and upgraded interior materials across all trims. With its spacious third row, extensive safety tech, and traditional American luxury cues, the Navigator gains even more credentials as a top-tier choice for families who prioritize comfort and prestige. While Matt DeLorenzo was attending the Navigator launch, host Jack Nerad was conducting a thorough test drive of one of the most likable luxury SUVs on the market, the 2025 Genesis GV80 3.5T AWD Prestige. This midsize luxury SUV cuts through the prestige vehicle clutter with its refined ride, upscale cabin, and contemporary technology. It features a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6, advanced suspension, and a 27-inch OLED display that integrates navigation and instrumentation. Its Nappa leather upholstery, suede headliner, and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system highlight its luxury credentials. Does it have an Achilles' heel or two? Matt and Jack will offer their opinions. The news segment leads with the public debut of the Slate Truck, a battery-electric, back-to-basics compact pickup from Michigan-based startup Slate Auto. Designed with simplicity and affordability in mind, it launches with a base price under $27,000—potentially under $20,000 after incentives—and that's just one of its eye-popping attributes. Another? Owners can retrofit it into a small SUV using a modular rear-seat kit. The minimalist design and customization-first philosophy are drawing attention, but questions remain about performance, durability, and market viability. Do American buyers want a vehicle with cloth seats and crank windows? Also in the news, there's been a shift in the U.S. auto tariff landscape. New adjustments to President Trump's 25% import duties aim to ease pressure on automakers and encourage domestic manufacturing at the same time. Matt and Jack detail how automakers might leverage unused American factory capacity and what the changes could mean for production strategy and the price you might pay at your local dealer. Other segments of this week's show highlight Toyota's rollout of hydrogen-powered Class 8 trucks and its more efficient Gen 3 fuel cell system, along with timely safety reminders about preventing heatstroke deaths among children and pets as summer approaches. Plenty of show this week. Jack Nerad's newest book Jack is now offering his newest crime novel, Only One Thing Stays the Same, at a pre-publication price of just $4.99. The 2025 Ford Bronco Sport has received a significant upgrade with the introduction of the Sasquatch off-road package. Host Jack Nerad drove it just days ago and then discussed the vehicle's nuances with Bronco Sport Brand Manager Mike Weller at a special event outside Knoxville, Tennessee. We'll share that interview with you on America on the Road this week. As off-road fans know, the serious all-terrain Sasquatch package was previously exclusive to the larger Bronco, but Ford is now making it available for the Bronco Sport Badlands and Outer Banks models. It significantly enhances the vehicle's off-road capabilities with features like a twin-clutch rear-drive unit, locking rear differential, and large 29-inch Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires, giving the likable crossover much greater off-pavement capabilities. The Bronco Sport's Sasquatch package exterior features modular steel bumpers, additional underbody protection, and revised wheel designs. Interior enhancements include an available grab handle and auxiliary switches. As Weller detailed in the exclusive interview, these updates make the Bronco Sport a more versatile small SUV that caters to outdoor enthusiasts seeking both capability and modern technology. And he'll share much more. In the news this week, Tesla Motors is returning to an old marketing scheme by offering cash for referrals. It could save you a substantial amount if you plan to buy an EV soon, and we'll have the details. There's crankiness in Detroit, as a union leader suggests that the CEO of a global automaker should resign in a dispute over the reopening of a factory. We'll tell the who's and why's on that one and what the future of the automaker might hold. The agonizingly slow rollout of the electric vehicle charging network is getting a lot of people hot under the collar. Now the federal government is poised to spend more than $500 million in that effort, and we'll tell you if it could mean you'll finally get some DC fast chargers at a convenient location near you. On a happier note, Hagerty is getting ready to display some full-size versions of classic Hot Wheels vehicles on the National Mall in Washington, DC. We'll tell you when that will happen and share some Hot Wheels stories, too. In our road tests this week, Co-Host Chris Teague got a very early chance to drive Infiniti's all-new full-size 2025 QX80. Does it have the goods to play in the big leagues of full-size luxury SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Grand Wagoneer? Teague will share his opinion. Across the country, Jack Nerad spent the past week testing the enhanced Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S, a very appealing revamp of the battery-electric-powered U.S.-built compact crossover SUV. Delivering more miles on a charge, the Pro S version of the vehicle might be the best combination of range, performance, charging ability and value VW has ever offered. Nerad will have all the details coming up. In all, we have a ton of show this week. Thanks for joining us. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

Importance of Training: Continuous training and moving beyond conscious competence to intuitive expertise set-top sales professionals apart. Introduction In the competitive world of automotive sales, mastering the intricate art of customer engagement and sealing deals is paramount. The Millionaire Car Salesman Podcast recently featured Larry Brainer, Internet Director and Trainer for the Dennis Dillon Auto Group, who shared invaluable insights into becoming a top-tier automotive salesperson. This article unpacks Brainer's approach, emphasizing core principles such as adhering to a structured sales process, effective customer interaction, and the indispensability of rigorous training. Mastering the Sales Process Adhering to a structured process in sales ensures that every customer interaction is thorough and leaves no room for error. As Larry Brainer puts it, "If you shortcut your process, you shortcut your paycheck." This principle was echoed throughout the podcast and forms the bedrock of Brainer's philosophy. Brainer recalls his own experiences in vacuum cleaner sales, which laid a solid foundation for his automotive career. Dealing with high-stakes sales on a tangible yet less glamorous product taught him the value of a disciplined approach. Success in the automotive industry demands that salespeople never skip steps, even when customers try to steer the conversation prematurely towards pricing. Consider his advice during vehicle presentations: "Larry, you said you're towing your RV up over Horseshoe Bend Pass… In a minute when we drive it, you're going to love the fact that…" This narrative not only builds anticipation but ensures that the customer sees the vehicle's value firsthand before discussing numbers. Maintaining control of the demonstration and systematically verifying feature claims – from torque to sound insulation – affirms trust and validates the salesperson's expertise. The consistency in executing these steps imbues the entire process with professionalism, ensuring that potential buyers feel comprehensively catered to. It's this meticulous attention to detail that sets seasoned professionals apart from amateurs. Effective Customer Engagement Understanding and meeting the unique needs of each customer is a hallmark of effective engagement. Brainer emphasizes active listening, asserting, "Good questions get good answers, better questions get better answers, and better listeners ask better questions." This approach allows salespeople to uncover clients' deepest needs and tailor their sales strategy accordingly. For instance, Brainer recalls a time with a customer named Helen. Her primary concern was safety, stemming from a recent accident involving a friend. By directly addressing her fears and showing her the features of a Lincoln Navigator, Brainer built a critical emotional connection. He stated, "Larry, I want to know that if I hit somebody, I'm going to win." This kind of engagement goes beyond mere product features; it taps into the customer's personal concerns and aspirations. Another illustrative story involves a couple buying an F-450 truck. Knowing that involving both decision-makers was crucial, Brainer ensured both the husband and wife drove the vehicle, making both feel equally valued in the decision-making process. Effective engagement involves anticipating needs and preemptively addressing concerns. Brainer's methods demonstrate that sales are not merely transactions but relationships built on trust and mutual respect. This deep level of engagement transforms sales encounters into memorable experiences, fostering lasting customer loyalty. Importance of Training Brainer's stories highlight the critical role of training in sales excellence. Drawing on Vince Lombardi's wisdom, he underscores the importance of practice, "An amateur practices until they get it right. A professional practices until they can no longer get it wrong." The path to sales mastery involves moving from conscious competence, where actions require deliberate thought, to unconscious competence, where skills are performed effortlessly. This transition is crucial, as it frees up mental bandwidth to fully engage with customers and respond to their cues dynamically. Reflecting on his journey, Brainer's initial stint in training came from demonstrating superior product knowledge in sales training sessions. His ability to perform polished walks-around showcases how immersive practice builds confidence and competence, both of which are visible and felt by customers. He shared, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it." This highlights the need for salespeople to internalize their training so deeply that their delivery feels natural and unrehearsed. Regular, rigorous training transforms sales practitioners into experts who can predict and navigate customer interactions seamlessly. These trained professionals can then fully embody Zig Ziglar's idea that really good technique, in the hands of a really good person, becomes unrecognizable as technique – it simply feels like a superior service. Synthesizing Insights Larry Brainer's approach to sales excellence intertwines a structured process, deep customer engagement, and relentless training. It is this triad that forms the basis of his successful methodology. The meticulous adherence to each step ensures nothing is overlooked, reinforcing the credibility and appeal of both the salesperson and the product. Building robust customer relationships by listening and responding genuinely to their needs transforms simple transactions into meaningful experiences. Training, continually pursued and refined, elevates a salesperson from a mere executor of tasks to a master of the craft. These principles do not merely add value to the automotive sales profession; they redefine it, setting a high bar for what it means to be an effective and empathetic salesperson. By internalizing these teachings, aspiring professionals can pave their own path toward unparalleled success in the automotive industry.

Recorded live at the 2023 Detroit Concours, with special guest Richard Vaughan! == Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-ICONS == This week, Jason and Derek travel to Detroit to check out the Detroit Concours d'Elegance — and of course Jason's first move is to go over to the RADWOOD-Era cars! There's an Alpine V6 Turbo that immediately captures his attention — and then he's distracted with a Ford Raptor-swapped Delorean with 450 hp and a six-speed manual. On closer inspection, and after instruction from Hyphen, there are other fabulous cars. For example, an incredible one-of-400 Series 70 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Broughams, a pillarless, hand-built hardtop coupe with a stainless-steel roof that cost more than a Rolls-Royce. And a Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder, one of the most valuable Ferraris ever. But the true highlight of the episode is a conversation with Richard Vaughan, Jason's longtime friend and storied designer. Richard started his career by designing the original Lincoln Navigator, and most recently worked on the Rivian R1T's interior. But the coolest part about him is his cars: he owns an original Aston Martin Lagonda sedan, several Bentleys and Rolls-Royces, and of course a Sacco-era Mercedes W124 300CE Coupe in Smoke Silver. The Carmudgeon Show was recorded live in front of an audience at the show, while sitting on beautiful and comfortable Recaro chairs — and is part of the Hagerty Podcast Network. We look at the Studebaker cars and their pivotal role in the transformation from horse and buggy manufacturing to motor car production. Andrew takes us through the museum's collection of about 120 wheeled vehicles, tracing the trajectory of the Studebaker Corporation from its horse-drawn era to the very last Studebaker ever made. We even get a look at some of the museum's crown jewels, including a 1924 Studebaker Big Six and a 1938 Commander convertible sedan. We also spotlight the remarkable work of industrial designer Brooks Stevens and his contribution to Studebaker in the early 60s. In the New Car Showroom, we get a review of the 2023 Lincoln Navigator Black Label. We take a look at its exterior features, interior highlights, engine, gas mileage, and MSRP price. Lexus executives readily acknowledge that the Lexus RX “is the franchise.” Both Guest Co-Host Matt DeLorenzo and Hot Jack Nerad were among the first journalists to test the all-new 2023 Lexus RX. The model comes in a variety of versions including gasoline, hybrid, and “performance hybrid.” If the last of those seems like an oxymoron to you, we can assure you after our drives that it isn't. And we'll have a lively discussion about all the new RX models in this episode of “America on the Road.” But that isn't the only important crossover SUV we examine this week. Host Jack Nerad recently traveled to North Carolina for a first drive of the heavily revised 2023 Hyundai Palisade, and he came back with an interview with an expert on the vehicle — Hyundai product planner Melvyn Bautista. The interview will provide rare insight into the changes the Palisade has for 2023. In the news, the state of California gathered big-time headlines by banning the sale of gasoline cars after 2035. But while that was the headline, the state's action has more immediate effects that are even more concerning. Matt Delorenzo, who is the author of How To Buy An Affordable Electric Car: A Tightwad's Guide to EV Ownership, and Jack Nerad, who is the author of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Hybrids and Alternative Fuel Vehicles, will offer their analysis of the California's move. Will the edict actually go into effect? They'll offer their thoughts on that, too. Also in the news, a major carmaker has just started to build electric vehicles at an American factory. We'll tell you all about that and how it fits — or doesn't fit — into the new green vehicle push contained in the recent Inflation Act. Does the new legislation damage chances for the adoption of EVs? In the road test segment, Jack Nerad will review the 2022 Lincoln Navigator, the full-size luxury SUV that competes with the Cadillac Escalade. The Navigator is so stuffed with tech that it is hard to discuss anything else about it, but Nerad will offer his well-rounded look at the big Lincoln. All that and more is coming up in this episode of “America on the Road.”
Lincoln's flagship Navigator was launched in 1998 as a response to the increasing demand for luxurious full-size SUVs. Spanning four generations, Lincoln's top-flight SUV has gone head to head against Cadillac's wildly popular Escalade. This fourth-generation Navigator entered Lincoln's lineup in 2018 and helped bring Lincoln's flagship SUV into prominence once again. This generation Navigator uses Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost for power and sends 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque through a ten-speed automatic transmission. From there, power travels to the rear wheels or all four wheels if you opt for the four-wheel-drive variant. In this episode of Quick Spin, executive editor Tom Murphy puts Lincoln's Navigator through its paces. Murphy highlights the Navigator's features and interior before taking you along on a live drive review. Adding more context to the Navigator, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Navigator's competition, its sales history and its price. The pair also talk about where the Navigator would excel, and how it stacks up against Cadillac's Escalade. Closing the show, the two talk about what makes the 2022 Lincoln Navigator special.

We've got a whole lot to cover in this week's episode! The Mazda 3 Hatch Turbo, Land Rover Defender 90 V-8, and the new Kia Sportage were all under our butts last week. For the 2022 model year, the Mustang will offer five new special edition models while standing pat mechanically. With no major changes this year in powertrain or suspension, the special editions should give buyers a new reason to take a look at the venerable sports model. The limited editions are designed to suit a wide variety of tastes. They include the Shelby GT500 Heritage Edition, Ice White Edition Coupe, California Special GT Performance Package, Coastal Limited Edition, and the Stealth Edition. Each model adds unique appearance items to suit their intended audiences. In our road test segment, host Jack Nerad takes a long look at the Mustang to see how it stacks up in the crazy market we now find ourselves in. Helping us sort out this crazy market is an expert on auto retailing. Marina Angelides, the chief financial officer of automotiveMastermind, is our special guest this week. She deeply understands the intersection between the car buyer and the car dealer, and she'll help us all get a handle on what is going on as the prices of both used cars and new cars skyrocket, leaving consumers in the dust. In the car review segment of this week's America on the Road, Co-Host Chris Teague will examine the Infiniti QX80 luxury full-size SUV. The segment has grown ever more competitive, and Teague will give his opinion on whether the QX80 is a worthy competitor for the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. In the news, Jack Nerad returned from the J.D. Power Automotive Summit filled with information about the current state of the industry and where it is likely to go in the future. He'll share those insights, and Nerad and Teague will discuss the return of the much-missed Acura Integra. Can it pull Acura from its funk? That and more in this episode of America on the Road.
