This week we are giving you something we are calling a "remix" episode. We have a new interview with former guest Mick Sullivan combined with some of his previous interview way back in 2019. Amy is traveling this week so we've reconnected with former guest Mick Sullivan, who is the curator of guest experience at the Frazier History Museum and is also the creator of the award winning children's history podcast, The Past and the Curious, which grew out of the stories he tells people at the museum. His quirky combo of humor and music keeps both kids and adults interested and sneaks in a little history in the process. The success of his podcast led to the publication of his first children's book, The Meat Shower, which is a fun telling of the historical event of meat falling from the sky in the 1800s. He has now published a book for older kids called I See Lincoln's Underpants: The Surprising Times Underwear (and the People Wearing Them) Made History. This episode is a little something new and something old. In this combo episode, we chat with Mick to see what he has been up to since his last book was published and you can also hear more about his first book which we discussed with him in the early days of the show in episode 27. You can find more from Mick Sullivan including podcast episodes at thepastandthecurious.com/. For show notes for any episode, go to our website at www.perksofbeingabooklover.com. His vision laid the ground work for Ferdinand Von Zeppelin's later accomplishments. John Cleves Symmes Jr. popularized a theory known as the Hollow Earth Theory. A bit of a theme going on in this one. Who improvises? Who does not? What does improvise mean? What does amprovise mean? As far as I know, it does not mean anything. Nonetheless this episode is fun and educational and fun and introduces the concept of improvisation to children. This Clap It Back rhythm game is two lessons in one and a whole lot of fun. Children will gain rhythmic awareness and learn the sections of the orchestra, namely woodwinds, percussion, brass and strings. Plus we rhyme "piccolos" with "cover holes." ✪ This episode's Echo Song called Improvise has special guest appearances by podcasters Alex Goldman of Reply All, Mick Sullivan of the Past and the Curious, Pamela Rogers of Buttons and Figs and Nosaj from the rap group New Kingdom. The song teaches the definition of "Improvising" in the musical sense and in the sense of going with the flow when life throws you curveballs. It's a song about resilience and having a good attitude for kids and the grown ups who love them even when they spill all of the snacks all of the time. ✪ Story Song - My Mother is a Baby - This is a song tale about a mother who is a baby, not a metaphorical baby, but an actual baby. It's a silly song for kids that's a little bit Elvis, a little bit Shel Silverstein and a whole lotta fun. ✪ You get to play this mad libs for kids in real time. I like to play this on long car rides where each person in the car takes turning filling in the blank. Carrie and I are still on vacation this week but you can find us with all new interviews and episodes August 5. But Today we have a replay of our interview with Mick Sullivan. Mick is a friend of the show. He helped us begin our adventure in broadcasting and podcasting by giving us the tools and the confidence to get started. He is the creator of the award winning children's history podcast, The Past and the Curious, which was recently named by the New York Times as one of the best children's podcasts. In this time of quarantine and virtual learning, children's podcasts have seen their downloads soar, including Mick's. If you are doing any roadtrip travel with your kids this summer, give his podcast a listen. I promise the adults will enjoy it just as much as the kids. He sat down with us to talk about his new children's book that had been published, The Meatshower. But Mick has another children's book in the works.   Our guest today is a history buff who has taken his interest in the past to a whole new level. Mick Sullivan is a history educator at the Frazier History Museum and is in charge of their youth and family programs. But he is also the creator of the children's history podcast, The Past and the Curious, which Common Sense Media lists as one of the best podcasts for kids. His quirky combo of humor and music keeps both kids and adults interested and sneaks in a little history in the process. His podcast includes a bit of an earworm song about local coffee shop Heine Bros Coffee So even if history isn't your jam, check it out just for that tune. The success of his podcast has led to the publishing of his first children's book, The Meat Shower, which is a fun telling of the historical event of meat (yes I just said meat) literally raining down on a Kentucky farm in the 1800s. In fact what is even more curious, there is still no explanation of this unusual event today.   Mick tells us how his podcast grew out of the stories he tells kids at the Frazier's children's programs, how his background in musical performance has served him well when creating the variety of music for his podcast, what huge role vultures play in his new book, and all about his vision to have a series of books featuring quirky history for every reading level.   Books discussed in this episode: 1- The Meatshower by Mick Sullivan 2- Spying on the South by Tony Horwitz 3- Confederates in the Attic by Tony Horwitz 4- Life of Pi by Yann Martel 5- American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang   You can find us on FB, instagram (@perksofbeingabookloverpod) and on our blog site at www.perksofbeingabooklover.com Perks airs on Forward Radio 106.5 FM and forwardradio.org every Wednesday at 6 pm, Thursdays at 6 am and 12 pm. The Past and The Curious: A History Podcast for Kids and Families

A polymath is a person of wide ranging knowledge or ability, and in this episode we're telling the stories of two unsung polymaths. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de St. Georges, was a world class fencer, composer, conductor and musician who spent time in the royal courts of France and tutored Marie Antoinette. He was also the son of an enslaved woman. Ziryab is a mysterious man from medieval Spain, when Muslim culture dominated the area. He was a musician, scholar, and pioneer of food and fashion. Pretty much a rock star before rock stars were a thing. You'll hear Ms. Lynn from The Good Words Podcast and music from Mick Sullivan and Todd Armstrong. Episode written and produced by Mick Sullivan. Somebody give us a book deal already.
