This week's podcast may seem a bit off-topic from my usual interviews, but on the other hand not really. I always like to interview people who are using their voice to make a difference and today's podcast guest is no exception.  Kareem teaches people how to use their voice to make a difference through language skills.  Kareem teaches conversational Arabic. He is the Founder of the School Of Yalla. As someone who has travelled a lot and lived in many countries, I do believe immersing yourself in the language of the country you are living in is helpful to establish deeper relationships and have a better understanding of a culture.  When living in Germany, I learned German. When living in Belgium, I learned Flemish. However, since living in Dubai, I'm ashamed to say, I have not managed to learn Arabic, bu not from a lack of trying.  We talk about the barriers faced when learning Modern Standard Arabic as opposed to conversational Arabic. Kareem teaches us his 'Focus 15' method for learning almost anything, but especially a language.  Also the importance of consistency, and the motivational power of setting small, achievable goals.  Kareem delves into the differences between Fusha (Modern Standard Arabic) and conversational Arabic. How many Arabic languages are there?  We also touche on how trust and effective communication skills can be enhanced by learning a new language, especially for professionals like doctors and executives.    Tune in to hear… 01:59 Understanding 'Yalla' and Its Cultural Significance 03:31 Challenges and Strategies in Language Learning 05:41 Kareem's Background and Language Learning Insights 12:39 The Importance of Immersing in a New Language 21:01 Learning Arabic: Practical Tips and Techniques 27:43 Breaking Down Arabic Phrases 31:45 Learning Through Mistakes 36:34 The Language Progress Triangle 42:36 Tailored Learning for Professionals 47:09 Building Trust Through Language   https://www.schoolofyalla.com https://www.instagram.com/schoolofyalla   Work with Lisa www.lisahugo.com/ Follow Lisa on Instagram www.instagram.com/lisahugoofficial   Connect with Lisa on LinkedIn www.linkedin.com/in/lisa-hugo

Discover The Two Best Online Methods for Learning Arabic: The Traditional Method Vs The Natural Method

Learning Arabic Online Though The Traditional Method The conventional method for acquiring proficiency in the Arabic language is widely followed by many students, including those studying at top universities like SOAS and Oxford, as well as Arabic tutors who advocate for this approach. The reason for this preference is that they believe Modern Standard Arabic is the most effective way to learn Arabic. Moreover, most Arabic tutors are only trained to teach Modern Standard Arabic, while classical Arabic is the predominant language used in books. Most of the best universities rely on textbooks like Al-Kitab,1,2,3, which are primarily designed to teach Modern Standard Arabic. By adopting this method, learners can achieve proficiency in reading and writing Arabic, comprehend its grammar, read modern Arabic literature, and understand news published in outlets such as BBC Arabic. Learning classical Arabic comes with its drawbacks. It is a highly complex language with intricate grammar, making it a challenging task to master. It typically takes students anywhere from three to five years to speak it moderately. Even after this lengthy period of learning, when students visit Arab countries like Lebanon, Syria, or Dubai, they may struggle to comprehend native Arabic speakers. If students attempt to speak classical Arabic, locals may find it unusual and they see them as the Shakespeare of the Arab world, it's a good title to have on the other hand. Learning Arabic Online Using The Natural Method From Spoken to Classical Arabic   The second approach to learning Arabic is through the Natural method, where students opt for one of the primarily spoken dialects in the Middle East, such as Levantine Arabic, Gulf Arabic, or Egyptian Arabic. As they gain confidence in conversing with native speakers in Arabic, they can gradually transition to learning Modern Standard Arabic. This approach is the most natural way to learn Arabic and allows students to pick up the language fast Why is This Method to Learn Arabic is Most Natural Way to Learn Arabic?  To begin with, you must be curious as to why I referred to this method as the natural approach. Allow me to explain. As a child growing up in the Middle East, I, like every other Arab child, learned my native dialect from my family and surroundings. Later, when I began attending school, I was introduced to Classical Arabic (MSA). The books used in Arabic schools are written in Classical Arabic, which helped me learn the language passively. Additionally, our teachers taught us Classical Arabic and literature. In Syria, we were required to study Classical Arabic and Arabic literature until we graduated from university, which provided us with a solid grasp of both spoken and Classical languages. It's worth noting that our teachers never used Classical Arabic to explain complex subjects like math or physics. Instead, they used Levantine Arabic to communicate their ideas. One of the main advantages is that students can start speaking Arabic within six months. This early focus on speaking creates confidence and motivation to continue learning and progress to higher levels. Additionally, spoken Arabic is a simplified version of Classical Arabic, making it easier to learn with less grammar and the language itself is poetic and beautiful, especially if you choose to learn Levantine Arabic. Nassra Arabic Method - Our Fluent in Six Months Online Arabic Program Omar and I have been using the Natural approach to teaching Arabic for 20 years now. We firmly & strongly believe that going from Learning Spoken Arabic to Classical is the most effective, efficient, and natural way to learn Arabic. That's why we have incorporated this approach into our online program, which is backed by a tried and tested method that guarantees fluency in Levantine Arabic and a seamless transition to Modern Standard Arabic. You will be able to speak Levantine Arabic with confidence and read newspapers, Arabic novels, and more.

In today’s episode, and on the occasion of the “Shamm el-Nessim” day being celebrated in Egypt today, I am reading excerpts from two different texts. The first is a brief factual text about this unique non-religious celebration, its ancient Egyptian origins, and how all Egyptians celebrate it by going out to open green spaces, eating salted fish, spring onions and coloured eggs. The second text is an excerpt from a short story by the Egyptian writer Edwar El-Kharrat. The section in question is narrated by an older woman who reminisces about her childhood memories of Shamm El-Nessim in Alexandria in the 1930s. While the short story is written in Modern Standard Arabic, these memories are an interesting mix of MSA and Egyptian dialect, with most of it written in dialect. See if you can tell the two registers apart. Related text in English: https://letsconclude.net/2017/10/25/sham-el-nessim-an-ancient-egyptian-festival-celebrated-today/ Text 2:

This podcast, featuring Dr. Mike Turner of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and TALIM resident director John Davison, was recorded on January 4, 2019. Traditional approaches to teaching Arabic in American Universities have focused on bringing students to proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic, a formal register of the language that is used throughout the Arabic-speaking world. In recent years, however, there has been a move toward building proficiency in spoken Arabic dialects as well. While most American students who study an Arabic dialect study either Egyptian or Levantine, the rise of Morocco as a primary site for study abroad and international experiences means that there is also a growing demand for instruction in Darija, the local Arabic dialect of Morocco. In this podcast, Mike Turner discusses his experience teaching Darija to various student groups in both Morocco and the United States. He highlights how different student profiles correspond with different pedagogical goals, which in turn inform what sort of curriculum a course should follow and materials it should draw on. As Morocco is likely to remain an important site for overseas Arabic study, the need for refined materials and methods for teaching Darija will only grow in the future. Mike Turner is an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, where he teaches courses in Arabic and International Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures from the University of Texas at Austin. His research in Arabic linguistics has been supported by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers and a Fulbright Student Grant. The featured photograph shows a bilingual Darija/French advertisement from a café in Rabat. The top text reads “FIK’JOU3?” – meaning “are you hungry?” – and is a typical example of Darija written in Latin script. The Difference of Languages within Hebrew and Its Evolution into Spoken Hebrew

Hebrew is a language native to Israel, spoken by over 9 million people worldwide, of which over 5 million are in Israel. Historically, it is regarded as the language of the Israelites and their ancestors, although the language was not referred to by the name Hebrew in the Tanakh. The earliest examples of written Paleo-Hebrew date from the 10th century BCE. Hebrew belongs to the West Semitic branch of the Afro-asiatic language family. Modern Hebrew is one of the 2 official languages of the State of Israel (the other being Modern Standard Arabic), while premodern Hebrew is used for prayer or study in Jewish communities around the world today. Ancient Hebrew is also the liturgical tongue of the Samaritans, while modern Hebrew or Arabic is their vernacular. As a foreign language, it is studied mostly by Jews and students of Judaism and Israel, and by archaeologists and linguists specializing in the Middle East and its civilizations, as well as by theologians in Christian seminaries. The Hebrew language is the thread that has bound the Jewish people together for millennia, both in liturgy and literature, and, in ancient times, as a spoken language. In the history of modern Zionism, however, if there is 1 event more miraculous than the establishment of the State of Israel, it is the revival of Hebrew as its common tongue. To make this revitalization possible, an uncommon organization was formed: The Academy of the Hebrew Language, the Israeli body with legislated authority to study, guard, and guide the development of the Hebrew language. The miracle of its rejuvenation today is credited to the work of journalist/scholar Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, often called the Father of Modern Hebrew. There were other Hebrew grammarians, scholars, & teachers of general topics. A local scholar of the Hebrew language is our very own Rabbi Michael Harvey who will teach Hebrew at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas campus.
