The Geek In Review

This week, we sit down with Kenzo Tsushima, Managing Director of Mine Factory at Morae, to discuss how AI is transforming legal operations and consulting services. Kenzo shares his unique career journey, blending a passion for technology with legal expertise, and highlights why the legal industry is positioned to leverage AI advancements more quickly than heavily regulated sectors like healthcare. With a background that spans consulting leadership and GC roles, Kenzo offers a rare dual perspective on how law firms and corporate legal departments can future-proof themselves by embracing emerging technologies like MorAI, Morae's proprietary AI platform.Kenzo discusses the creation of MorAI, launched in mid-2023, as a response to widespread legal tech “decision fatigue” — where an abundance of AI tools overwhelms buyers. Rather than pushing generic solutions, Morae designed MorAI around highly specific legal workflows such as contract review, RFP response automation, and internal helpdesk queries. Kenzo emphasizes the importance of "solutionizing" AI: showing real, targeted results rather than relying on hype. Using examples like their Helpdesk module, Kenzo explains how legal teams can instantly boost efficiency by querying historical RFP responses and deploying AI for natural language document reviews, significantly reducing administrative burdens across legal and procurement functions.A strong advocate for servant leadership and human-centric AI adoption, Kenzo outlines how Morae's approach goes beyond technology — focusing heavily on change management and upskilling legal professionals. Through programs like SEEDS (Skill Enablement Employee Development Series), Morae invests in developing both consulting and technology skills among its team. Kenzo notes that traditional legal professionals, often unfamiliar with public speaking or technology tools, can thrive when given structured, bite-sized learning opportunities. This consultative-first mindset, he argues, not only improves client outcomes but creates a more resilient and engaged workforce.Addressing cybersecurity and data privacy concerns, Kenzo details Morae's use of private Azure instances and multiple legally trained LLMs to ensure client data security and confidentiality. Unlike public AI tools, MorAI is designed to be a trusted legal companion that never co-mingles client data or trains on external internet content. Kenzo also explains why Morae's strategy of multi-LLM deployment (leveraging OpenAI, Anthropic, and others) future-proofs clients against rapid developments in AI models — ensuring their legal technology stacks remain agile and powerful over time. Finally, Kenzo shares his insights on the challenges ahead for the legal industry: decision fatigue, resistance to change, and the crucial need to align with younger generations' expectations around technology use. He urges law firms and corporate legal departments to rethink build-vs-buy strategies, embrace commercially available solutions, and foster AI champions within their organizations. As new roles like legal engineers and prompt engineers emerge, firms that support AI-enabled upskilling and servant leadership will not just survive — they will lead the next era of legal innovation.Listen on mobile platforms:  Apple Podcasts |  Spotify | YouTube[Special Thanks to Legal Technology Hub for their sponsoring this episode.]  Blue Sky: @geeklawblog.com @marlgebEmail: geekinreviewpodcast@gmail.comMusic: Jerry David DeCiccaTranscript

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Sunday morning, 30th of October, 2022, and this is your friend Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy…”Philippians 1:3-And then we go to Romans 1:12:"that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me."Iron sharpening iron. that's right:“As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”Proverbs 27:17We need each other, no man is an island. I can know a person for 20 years and not really confide in him because he is not a Christian, but I can meet a fellow believer and within 5 minutes, I can feel like I have known him all my life. Romans 8:11 is one of my favourite scriptures. If the same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead dwells in you, that same Spirit that raised Christ shall quicken your mortal body. It is because we have the same Spirit dwelling within us. I have a friend. This dear lady is going to be 100 years old on the 1st of February, next year, she has become my friend. I have another friend who is 3 years old, maybe going on 4 and he sends me photographs of himself in his cowboy outfit with his Bible, and he says he loves me! I have been to cathedrals in Europe that are hundreds and hundreds of years old. I have sung hymns where it sounds like angels singing. I have been into a corral, where you keep cattle, with a cowboy church and all the riders on horseback are singing Country Western Gospel songs. We need each other. I have been to the land of the Long White Cloud, New Zealand. I have been amongst the Maori people, I really love them. The most aggressive rugby players in the world and yet, off the field, the most gentle and most loving. I have been invited to their meeting houses called a Marae. When you go in there, you sit down and they say to you, “Bring us the Good News of Jesus Christ.” And I stand up, I take my coat off because I can't preach with a jacket on, it restricts me, and they look at each other and smile. The leader looks at me, he says: “You know our tradition?” I say, “No, what is it?” He says, “When you come into a Morae, you take your coat off to show us that you don't have any weapons concealed and that you come in peace. Why is it that it doesn't matter what culture you come from, what colour you are or what age you are but there is a love? It is because the people have decided to follow Jesus.Do you remember that old hymn?I have decided to follow JesusI have decided to follow JesusI have decided to follow JesusOh, no turning back, praise the Lord, no turning back. Have a wonderful Sunday and go and love somebody.Goodbye.

In our continued exploration into Team Roles, in this episode we talk to Erica Kucharczyk about the role of User Research. This is a role that is frequently overlooked, but can pay off huge dividends in the long run if quality research is incorporated into your development cycle. We discuss how research helps teams validate their value proposition, the value of user research, the process of designing, running and analyzing tests, Qualitative vs Quantitative, how to get into user research and what good looks like. So, get out there and do some research! We start by talking about how User Research validates value propositions; needs, gains and pains. Next, we talk about how the User Research role differs from, and overlaps with, the Design and UX roles. We discuss why you should pay for User Research and what good looks like when user research is incorporated fully into the development cycle. We briefly touch on some tools for remote testing and talk about different testing environments, such as a more formal lab setting vs. more natural settings. We talk about the importance of researcher demeanor and attitude, especially the mindset of not leading the user and not helping the user too much. We touch on low-fi testing methods for low budget situations or to simply get started doing user research with your team. We revisit the Qualitative vs Quantitative discussion and talk about how they compliment each other and how different insights can be gained by both approaches. We go through the process of designing tests, running the tests, analysing the results and playing back the findings. We talk about recording users and privacy concerns, including GDPR. Erica talks about her interest in this area and the article she co-wrote on this subject (see link in the show notes below). We discuss how people can get into research and what good looks like. Good researchers must be good communicators, they should like people, be persuasive, and be able to think on their feet. Finally, we talk about how to get started with research on your project and to ensure you don't forget about the User Research role when planning teams. Erica Kucharczyk has been working as a researcher for about 12 years and started off in academia running research on projects in sleep technology and brain training games for older people with dementia. More recently she's been working as a user experience researcher with Government clients and she's interested in research ethics and research operations. We got all the faves back this week!  Ben Lockwood reminds folks that even though he's a professor what you will NOT do is think you can come for his throne.  Ben basically told the wannabe usurpers to put some respect on his name.  It's interesting watching Ben navigating what conferred legitimacy means to a grassroots movement, even if it is steeped in bigotry and exclusiveness.  Kara and the Superfriends (Brainy, Nia as Dreamer, and J'onn) take on Manchester and the Elite (Menagerie, Hat, and a Morae) in a battle that causes Kara to question her alliances, her allegiances, and her approach to crime fighting.  The best thing about Manchester is that even if you disagree with his methods, you have to admit underneath all of that his cause is one of righteousness-he's trying to protect those who are being victimized.  Clearly, Kara had to make a tough choice in this episode, but it also caused her to get Alex on board by appealing to her true nature.  We also discuss whether or not Haley can be redeemed after the terrible start the show gave her, and James vs. Lena in the ethics of granting powers to humans under a government contract.    Like what you hear? Joanne Clarkson was taught card reading as a child by her grandmother, psychic Esther Monson Erdman. Wanting to have a skill not practiced by other family members, in her early teens, she learned palmistry by reading every book she could find in the public library.Joanne has used her Insights throughout her life for self-fulfillment and to encourage others. With palm readings, she explores talents, tendencies and life paths. Using Tarot, she helps seekers answer questions, make contact, and reach a deeper understand of self and surroundings. Joanne is a Registered Nurse and enjoys writing poetry. Her book THE FATES contains 58 poems arranged into three sections, each headed by a poem about one of the three Fates or Morae from Greek mythology: Klotho who spins the thread of life, Lachesis who measures it and Atropos who snips it at the end.The point of the book is the exploration of ‘fate versus free will.’ How much control do we have over our lives? The character that occurs most frequently is her maternal grandmother, Esther, a Swedish immigrant, who was also a psychic medium. Her struggles, mental and physical, have often given Joanne poetic inspiration. The fact that her grandmother was a seamstress and a milliner as well as a card reader, ties in well with the stories of the Fates. Joannes work as a Hospice Nurse is also reflected in these poems as is the presence of death in her personal life. While hardship might seem prevalent, hopefully courage, love and beauty are truly the dominant themes. Joanne is also the author of THERE’S ALWAYS A MIRACLE dive into her years caring for the dying as a hoscpice nurse that changed her way of thinking about body and spirit. These pages contain twenty-four stories of ghosts and music and a failed GPS system. Of UFOs and convicts. Of a fateful traffic accident and imaginary roses. Five chapters from her personal life frame nineteen examples of how final moments become extraordinary. In this book, small coincidences make a great difference. Single acts of unselfish love let us know we are not alone in our sorrow and wonder.Check out her website at joanneclarkson.comMusic by Chronox, Kevin Mcleod and Spaceboy at spaceboymusic.com
