Welcome back to the latest episode of TUC0's Talks! Today Retired Major General Mark Dillon shares his insights on leadership and offers advice for young leaders. He emphasizes the importance of observing, reading, and thinking as key practices for leadership development. He encourages young leaders to learn from the wisdom of others, including their parents and mentors, and to read the classics to gain a deeper understanding of human nature. He also highlights the significance of humility and the need for leaders to focus on others rather than themselves. Finally, he reminds listeners of the upcoming 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the timeless principles it represents. Keywords #leadership #observation #reading #thinking #wisdom #professionaldevelopment #declarationofindependence Takeaways Observation, reading, and thinking are essential practices for leadership development. Learn from the wisdom of others, including parents, mentors, and leaders in your community. Read the classics to gain a deeper understanding of human nature and timeless principles. Humility is a key trait for effective leadership. Focus on others and their needs rather than solely on yourself. Reflect on the principles and values represented by the Declaration of Independence. "The first responsibility of leadership is training the next generation of leaders." "Wisdom is knowing how little you know." "If all men are created equal, that is final. If they're endowed with inalienable rights, that is final. If governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, that is final." Join me as I sit down with my friend and colleague, Dr. R. Mark Dillon, Executive Vice President and Founder of Total Advancement Solutions, the division of Generis that focuses solely on serving Christian schools, universities, and nonprofits (the division I serve with, too).   In this episode, Mark and I discuss his book, Giving and Getting in the Kingdom, A Field Guide, which is considered to be a standard guide for fundraising in the Christian realm.   We discuss the four “types” of givers that he's seen in his 25+ years in our business, and which of the types are in our schools and how we can best reach them. At its core, fundraising is about *relationships*. Mark shares with us what he's learned about people and wealth and what they really want. Mark and I also discuss specifics about how to best build relationships in a messy K12 context and what every Head of School should be doing to get your donors' “best” gift.   At the end of the episode, I take some of Mark's concepts and break them down into application in our K12 school context, so stay tuned for the entire episode.   After leading successful fundraising teams for more than two decades and helping to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for Christ and His Kingdom, Mark has a calm confidence about him that I have always found reassuring. I always learn something from Mark when we meet – and I'm excited to introduce you to him and give you access to a bit of his wisdom.   I highly recommend his book if you're responsible for fundraising in any way at a Christian school or organization. Whether you're a development officer, a Head of School, or board member, you'll find this book incredibly useful as a foundational understanding of “giving and getting” in the Kingdom.   Mark mentions both feasibility studies and coaching – two key aspects of our services at Total Advancement Solutions/Generis. If you're a Christian school leader seeking information in either of these areas (or other aspects of development or communications), contact me at Kim.Jennings@Generis.com.    Resources: Giving and Getting in the Kingdom: A Field Guide by Dr. R. Mark recaps the most recent cohort that traveled to Germany and made real noise for young American players. The Talent projekt boys played countless European teams including Bundesliga giant academies. The group saw nearly 45% of the players attend a trial with a professional club and countless players receiving contracts with the likes of TSV 1860 Munchen and more. With all the hype and excitement around young American players it can sometimes lead to agents promising players the world, and they can't deliver. The Talentprojekt model was conceived in 2010 with the intention of bringing young American soccer talents with high potential to Germany to develop within its unequivocally world-class youth development system. The program set out to prove that American athletes with a high soccer IQ and a high level skill set, an adaptable character and willingness to work hard and learn, could close the gap on their European counterparts when given the same advantage.

On August 6th the series Romance broadcast a western named “Pagosa,” which starred William Conrad in the title role of Jeff Spain. Macdonnell approached CBS brass about the possibility of doing a Jeff Spain series. His timing was right. CBS already had the title for a series in mind: Gunsmoke. Two audition programs were recorded in the middle of 1949 with a title character named Mark Dillon. Neither sold. CBS gave Macdonnell and Meston one week to put production together.

Sharing the deeply intimate and terrifying pieces of herself is an important part of her creative process. Ashley started songwriting at a young age as a therapeutic practice and a means of escape, turning to songwriting to express emotions not so easily expressed in mere words. She believes art should be used as a tool for political action and self expression. In the late 1940s, CBS chairman William S. Paley, asked his programming chief, Hubell Robinson, to develop a show about a "Philip Marlowe of the Old West". Robinson, in turn, asked their West Coast Vice President, Harry Ackerman, to take on the task. Ackerman, who had developed the Philip Marlowe series, worked with his scriptwriters to create two different versions of the show. The first, recorded in June 1949, was very much like a hardboiled detective series and starred Michael Rye as the lead character Mark Dillon; the second, recorded in July of that same year, starred Straight Arrow actor Howard Culver in a lighter, more Western version of the same script. CBS liked the Culver version better, and Ackerman was told to proceed. A complication arose, however, when Culver's contract with Straight Arrow would not allow him to do another Western. So the project was shelved for three years, until producer Norman Macdonnell and writer John Meston discovered it while creating a Western series of their own. They wanted to create a radio Western for adults, in contrast to the popular kids shows such as The Lone Ranger and The Cisco Kid. Gunsmoke, as their show would be called, was set in Dodge City, Kansas, during the thriving cattle days of the 1870s. It's lead character was renamed from Mark Dillon to Matt Dillon and they hired William Conrad in the lead role. The show ran from 1952 to 1961 and drew critical acclaim for it's unprecedented realism. Well known radio historian John Dunning wrote that among radio enthusiasts, "Gunsmoke is routinely placed among the best shows of any kind and any time." Today's episode is the 20th episode in the series and was originally broadcast on September 6th, 1952, the same day Canada's first television station, CBFT-TV opened in Montreal. If I'm sitting on the cushion, to really bring myself into this moment, I'll just use the breath, and just notice that I'm breathing. Sometimes I notice it in the nostrils, sometimes I notice the rising and the falling of the abdomen. Wherever it is, I'll tune in to that and use that as my anchor and then as the mind wanders, which of course it will, as soon as I notice that wandering, I come back to where I was noticing the breath and use that and just keep practicing with it.Suggested ResourcesBook: A Still Forest Pool by Ajahn ChahApp: Pomodoro App (There are many)Advice for NewbieFind a group of like-minded people who you can get together with on a regular basis, and connect with them.Find either a book or a teacher you can connect with (as opposed to many books). # Gunsmoke was on radio for 9 seasons, from 1952 to 19612. Six of those seasons coincided with the television series. # There were 413 radio stories, broadcast 480 times. # From an e-mail from Mrs. Howard Culver (Howie, the Dodge House clerk from the TV series) Yes, Howard was one of several who did auditions for the radio Gunsmoke, and he was chosen from the recordings with unnamed applicants to play Marshall Dillon. He cut a record (Matt Dillon was known as Mark Dillon in it), but since Howard was playing the lead in "Straight Arrow" on Mutual Network, his contract with Mutual would not let him play the lead in the Gunsmoke show. Thence it was given to William Conrad.
