Your questions, answered! In this very first episode of my new Dear Former Fence-Sitter series, I sit down with former guest — mom, therapist, and former fence-sitter, Amanda E. White — to answer questions that include... How do I decide if I don't feel strongly about having kids one way or the other? If I'm scared of pregnancy and childbirth, what advice do you have for me? I'm a step-mom and struggling to figure out if I want kids of my own — what to do? How do I navigate my relationships with my mom friends as a childfree woman? What was beneficial in preparing yourself for parenthood, and that made you realize you could do it? 'Maitri' - Silicon Valley's Outreach for Assistance: In February 1991, a group of women came together to create a lifeline for South Asian women facing domestic violence, marking the birth of Maitri. Recognizing the service gap for immigrant South Asian women, they saw a need for culturally and linguistically accessible support, leading to Maitri's founding.  Today, Maitri remains dedicated to bridging this gap and continues to answer the calls for help that started over three decades ago. Since 1991, Maitri has empowered thousands of survivors and emerged as a cornerstone for the South Asian community. Maitri offers holistic assistance through volunteer training, comprehensive resource guides, partnerships with legal and domestic violence organizations, and various programs and services. These include a Helpline, Peer Counseling, Transitional Housing, Legal Advocacy, Economic Empowerment, Individual Therapy, Support Groups, Community Outreach and Education, and Emergency Shelter Referrals.  Maitri believes healthy relationships are built on mutual respect, open communication, and individual empowerment. All of their efforts are geared toward helping South Asians make informed choices. South Asia's Domestic Violence Problem: High Prevalence: South Asia faces higher rates of intimate partner violence, with 37% of women affected, exceeding the global average of 30% Economic Dependence: Financial dependency among South Asian women, with 58% not participating in income-related decisions, increases their vulnerability to domestic abuse Child Marriages: South Asia has the world's highest child marriage rates, with 30% of girls marrying before turning 18, contributing to heightened risks of domestic violence. * Data cited from internet sources and may not be 100% updated Maitri's Mission: Their mission is to empower South Asian survivors of domestic violence to lead lives of dignity and self-sufficiency through holistic programs and enable healthy relationships and gender equity through community education, engagement, and advocacy. "Violence against women, gender abuse, gender inequality – you find it everywhere. But it's our duty to stand against it." Nandini Ray In this Episode: In this episode, we explore the remarkable journey of Maitri, an organization dedicated to supporting South Asian victims of domestic violence. From its modest beginnings with a single phone line in a kitchen over 30 years ago, Maitri has grown into a powerful force offering various services, including legal advocacy, immigration help, housing, and more. Born from the empathy of a group of South Asian women in Silicon Valley, Maitri has evolved to have 18 staff members and around 50 committed volunteers, making it a significant source of support for the South Asian community. Nandini Ray shares her experiences with misogyny and domestic violence in India, emphasizing that this issue transcends class and culture. Through her heartfelt stories, we learn about three individuals who, thanks to Maitri, have been able to change their life trajectories. We hear tales of a mother reclaiming her self-worth, a young person escaping a forced marriage, and a man challenging gender norms by seeking help against abuse. While one episode can't possibly capture the full impact of Maitri's work, the organization stands out as a shining example of hope and resilience in the face of domestic violence. Join us for an episode filled with inspiration, poignant accounts, and a deep look into an issue affecting global communities. About the Guest: Nandini Ray is the Sr. Manager, Outreach & Prevention Program at Maitri. She is a State-mandated trained Domestic Violence advocate passionate about gender justice. It’s All Your Fault: High Conflict People

It's not unusual that high conflict people demand an apology from a reasonable person who has attempted to set limits on them, such as a supervisor in a workplace dispute or someone in a neighbor dispute. While apologies resolve many disputes between reasonable people, they are a much different matter with HCPs and usually need to be avoided. However, don't be surprised that high conflict people frequently will demand an apology from another party, at times saying that they cannot move forward without such an apology. Sometimes a reasonable person will demand an apology from a high conflict person because of their extreme behavior, also saying that they can't move forward without it. Many relationships (and mediations) bog down here in the apology quicksand.Bill and Megan discuss this apology quicksand – how we get there, how to avoid it, and what to do if someone's demanding an apology from you.Links & Other Notes BOOKS It's All Your Fault! 12 Tips for Managing People Who Blame You for Everything Calming Upset People with EAR ON DEMAND COURSES New Ways for Mediation Training New Ways for Mediation Training for Family Cases How to Write a BIFF Response The Brain 101: How to Communicate Effectively Our website: https://www.highconflictinstitute.com/ Submit a Question for Bill and Megan All of our books can be found in our online store or anywhere books are sold, including as e-books. Marital rape has been a crime in all 50 States in the US since 1993. The current California criminal code makes no distinction between rape by a stranger and an intimate partner or spouse. The non-consensual sexual relations within a marriage are subject to the same penalty and consequences resulting in registration in the sex offenders' list among others. As an agency primarily serving immigrant survivors from South Asia, it has posed and continues to pose a unique challenge for Maitri in communicating with survivors and delivering a message of no tolerance to sexual violence within a marriage. How can we, as advocates, address this cultural conditioning, belief system and yet be trauma-informed and sensitive to our survivors? How do we bring up this conversation with both our survivors and our community? In this episode with Kiki Lally, we talk about learning through creativity and art, especially when you're feeling stuck. We chat about learning environments that foster creativity, building community and connections, universal design principles to improve access to creative opportunities for persons with disabilities and so much more!  Kiki Lally is the owner and creative director of Pinnovate DIY Studio, an art school and events space for children and adults to create and connect.  Pinnovate opened its doors in 2017 with the hopes of filling the existing gap in children's artistic programming in Calgary. Like many small businesses Pinnovate faced some big challenges in 2020 and had to face multiple studio closures. But with their small but mighty team they began virtual events and classes and even started another business called DIY Delivery. This business ships ready to go DIY crafting kits across North America and recently began a DIY Subscription service for all ages.  Pinnovate has been featured in the Globe and Mail, the Creative Industries International magazine, as well as countless other publications. Recently they were the recipients of the City of Calgary Access and Achievement award as well as the Between Friends outstanding contribution award for their charitable local work throughout our city.   Listen in as we talk about: Bringing together community, creativity and connection. Kiki shares how Pinnovate brings these three very important Cs together. Improving access for people with disabilities. Learn how Kiki and her team are implementing universal design principles to improve access for people with disabilities.  Learning through creativity. How can we learn and grow through creativity? Kiki tells us why it's so important to bring more creativity into our daily lives. Learning every day. This involves being self-reflective, admitting what you aren't good at, and using failures as fuel to learn.   Connect with Kiki: Websites: Pinnovate: https://pinnovate.ca DIY Delivery: https://deliverydiy.com Instagram: @pinnovate https://www.instagram.com/pinnovate/ @diydelivery_  https://www.instagram.com/diydelivery_/ Facebook: @pinnovateyyc https://www.facebook.com/pinnovateyyc TikTok: @pinnovate https://www.tiktok.com/@pinnovate YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsX4vk79b-o2uj5AHo3EAgQ   Connect with Tiana: Website: https://tianafech.com LinkedIn: Tiana Fech https://www.linkedin.com/in/tianafech/ Instagram: @tianafech https://www.instagram.com/tianafech/ Facebook: @tianafech https://www.facebook.com/tianafech Book: Online Course Creation 101: A step-by-step guide to creating your first online course https://amzn.to/3BujR21      BRINGING TOGETHER COMMUNITY, CREATIVITY, AND CONNECTION Art doesn't have the same barriers or challenges when it comes to making connections in different spaces, especially for those who have disabilities or are newcomers to Canada, for example. Everyone gets to be in the same creative space doing the same projects, and communicate through this shared language. When you foster a loving environment and try to create projects for all niches, ages, demographics and wants. Through art, we have the capability to do something for everybody that doesn't have barriers the same way as other things do.    LOOK WHAT I MADE! The minute you are proud of something that you have created you want to show it off to your partner or your friends. You want to hang it up in your house. Creating is a joyful experience. It can result in the release of endorphins. You use different parts of your brain when you are painting, drawing, or sculpting.  Kiki talks about how this creativity was lost in the previous generation. It was more about technology, IT, and the Internet. However, there is now a renewed interest and appreciation for creativity and the arts.    IMPLEMENTING UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRINCIPLES TO IMPROVE ACCESS During the COVID shut downs, it was really heartbreaking to see adults with dis...

“The pursuit of private financial gain is what drives inequality and ecological harm.” This is the perspective of Jennifer Hinton, a leading proponent of the not-for-profit business, which is differs in fundamental ways from a traditional nonprofit organization and, of course, from for-profit businesses. Not-for-profit businesses models are often invisible in the many movements to reimagine our economic system, but the idea is starting to gain momentum. Jennifer offers a vision of an entirely not-for-profit economy made up exclusively of not-for-profit businesses that de-emphasize profit and growth and instead prioritize businesses as a means for social and environmental benefit. Together we look at examples and operating principles of this model, we explore how it navigates the capitalism/socialism binary, and we ask what conditions would be necessary for this model to truly offer a bridge to a post-growth, post-capitalist world. Dr. Jennifer Hinton is a systems researcher, activist, and ecological economist who is a Senior Fellow at the Schumacher Institute and the author of two books: How on Earth: Flourishing in a Not-for-Profit World by 2050 (https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1902/1902.01398.pdf), co-authored with Donnie Maclurcan of the Post-Growth Institute, and Relationship-to-Profit: A Theory of Business, Markets, and Profit for Social Ecological Economics (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/348742711_Relationship-to-Profit_A_Theory_of_Business_Markets_and_Profit_for_Social_Ecological_Economics) Thanks to Between Friends for the intermission music. A Conversation With Coaching Client Marla Mogul   Marla is one of my coaching clients and she agreed to come on the show to share her journey. She also shares how my coaching has helped her create a life plan and achieve her goals faster than she could alone.     Take away: Coaches can help you achieve your goals much faster than going it alone.   Action step: Explore if a coach can help you achieve your life goals.    Money Learnings: Marla's family never talked about money. They grew up in a neighborhood that was beyond their means.    Bio: As the co-founder of the nonprofit, A Night Out, Marla created an organization that in five years served more than 900 survivors of domestic violence, while providing childcare for over 250 of their children. Through safe and healthy social experiences such as self-care spa nights, concerts and theater performances, A Night Out provides an opportunity for survivors to rebuild a sense of community in a safe environment with support, understanding, and fun. Her vision of growing the program to serve as many women, men and children as possible, led to the strategic acquisition of A Night Out by the nonprofit, Between Friends, an agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic violence. The consolidation represents a strategic growth opportunity that keeps the needs of survivors first.   Prior to establishing A Night Out, Marla was the founder and Managing Partner of Mogul Consulting Group. Offering turnkey event planning for CEOs and Corporate Officers of Fortune 500 companies, Marla directed all facets of operations.  From Board of Directors meetings, executive retreats, and special client events such as Super Bowl and Kentucky Derby trips, Mogul Consulting delivered quality results to ensure client satisfaction, repeat business and valuable referrals. Before starting her consulting business, she worked in Marketing Communications for Baxter Healthcare and The Kemper Group.   Earlier this year she founded The Mogul Method, a coaching program for women over 50 who want to lose weight without ever dieting again. The customized foolproof system help women stay vibrant and more beautiful as they age.   In addition to her career experience, Marla has served as a Board member of numerous nonprofit organizations, including Between Friends, Cancer Wellness Center, North Suburban JCC and North Shore Congregation Israel. She served as Treasurer and then as President for the Glencoe Parent Teacher Organization, as well as Treasurer of the Quest Academy Parent Student Association.  Her expertise was creating fundraising opportunities to support the schools and the community.   Marla is a graduate of the Indiana University Kelly School of Business. She lives with her husband in Chicago where they savor the beautiful lake views. Her passions include traveling, physical fitness, skiing, reading, and collecting wind-up toys.   Highlights from this episode: How Marla's upbringing caused her to spend too much as a young adult.  The need to fit in and leading a materialistic life.  Money doesn't make you worthwhile.  You have to be honest with yourself.  The life plan process. The power of being intentional. Why Marla reached out to me for coaching.  How financial coaching has helped Marla. Long term results come through changing habits. Marla's coaching program. The emotions we have with eating.  You have to be ready for coaching.  We are responsible for our lives and the outcomes we want. Why you should get a coach.   https://www.themogulmethod.com/ Richer Soul Life Beyond Money. You got rich, now what? Let's talk about your journey to more a purposeful, intentional, amazing life. It's nice to be back after a taking a week off for the holidays and my birthday! This week, I am chatting with two great punx, human beings, activists, and prevention specialists. Kat Stuehrk and Matt Walsh run the nonprofit, Our Music My Body. Our Music My Body is a Chicago-based collaborative campaign led by Between Friends & Rape Victim Advocates to raise awareness about sexual harassment in the music scene. They do this work because they believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable and safe when they go to a concert or festival. OurMusicMyBody works with festival and venue staff, musicians, and music fans alike to create fun and consensual music experiences for all. We had a great chat the other night about the work they do, the challenges of confronting misogyny and harassment, and what it looks like to conscientiously attend gigs and festivals. It's work that I am personally dedicated to, and am thankful there are many others doing similar work in their communities! I hope you enjoy this chat - it's a topic that is very important to me and Katy - and if you would like to get involved, check out their contact info below!EPISODE NOTES:- Kat is a prevention educator for Rape Victim Advocates in Chicago.- Matt is a prevention specialist for Between Friends.- Make sure to visit their store and get yourself a sweet, "Consent Rocks!" shirt!- Problematic as she might be, Margaret Atwood's book, "Blind Assassin," is one of Kat's favorite books.- Matt suggests checking out the book, "P.S. Singer, Songwriter, playwright Paul Sanchez describes Fat City as "a polyester Bourbon Street." Paul used to play in a band called Godot in Fat City back in the 1970 s. Being in an artsy new wave band that made musical references to French literature didn t get you laid back then. Paul says, though, that he sometimes went home with a woman who slept with someone else. The reason this conversation even gets started is because Cherie Melancon Franz the creator of Thinkerella mentions she doesn t know where the Cajun Melancon comes from in her family because she is adopted. Her birth mother found her when Cherie was 21 and apparently told her that she was conceived in Fat City one night after mom "met a guy." After some mild deliberation it doesn t look, however, like Paul Sanchez is Cherie Melancon Franz s dad. In case Cajun names get confusing and you don t know your Melancon from your Molaison, Paul brought along singer songwriter Justin Malaison to help him sing a song off his album, Between Friends. There s an amazing story behind Paul s latest album, Life Is A Ride, that will tug at your heartstrings for sure. If you re in the market for beautiful songs, Andrew Duhon can help you out with his newest, Down From The Mountain. As you ll hear, there is an interesting reason this song may never make it onto an album so listen up. It really is a gorgeous piece of music with evocative lyrics that take you to the mountain. Mark Owens is not Cherie Melancon s father either though he is also adopted. Mark owns arguably the grooviest gym in New Orleans, Prime Fitness RX. As well as smelling like a eucalyptus forest, the place looks and feels like you re somewhere else. Somewhere where they throw lots of money into making a gym hip. Just ask Dave Chapelle, Hugh Jackman, and a bunch of other about as cool as you can get tourists who like to work out. Photos at Wayfare by Alison Moon. There’s no other living Israeli author who is as well known around the world as Amos Oz. Inside Israel, he’s one of the country’s most respected cultural figures. Oz has lived a tumultuous life. When he was 10 years old, he witnessed the founding of the Jewish state. When he was 12 years old, his mother committed suicide. When he was 15, he joined a kibbutz and changed his last name to Oz, Hebrew for “strength.” He eventually left the kibbutz for the desert because of his son’s asthma, but as he tells Vox Tablet contributor Daniel Estrin, he still dreams of kibbutz life at least once a week. In his newest short story collection, Between Friends, he revisits the early years of the kibbutz, when the collective farms were still a wild Israeli ideological experiment.
