In Dorothea Mackellar's poem, My Country, she refers to Australia being a land of droughts and flooding rains. It now an occasional segment when stellar beverages are discovered. 00:04:28 The January Edition Of The Adelaide Hills Farmcast In this chat, hear a special episode of the Adelaide Hills Farmcast with Belle and Pods from Adelaide Hills Farm Services. They've been producing a monthly show in the style of a farming almanac coupled with feature interviews. It is aimed at small acerage landowners and farmers throughout the Adelaide Hills but now also includes the Fleurieu Peninsula. We arranged this joint recording as our effort to shine a light for city people on the challenges and responsibilities faced by rural landowners and producers; the deeper the mutual respect, the better for all of us. In your Farmcast, you usually start with an almanac of specific activities property owners and smal acreage farmers should plan for in the upcoming 4-6 weeks. You get lots of good feedback about that. This month, though, for January, we're just restructuring the almanac into a list of five things property owners and small acreage farmers should think about over the summer break. Water for stock and for essential supplies should there be a bushfire Bushfire Risk - spraying, slashing, firebreaks, even farm firefighting units Summer weed spraying to keep on top of weeds Around the home garden and house paddock - mulching for water conservation and plant health And if you're going away over the summer - alerting neighbours and consider using sensors 00:43:37 Now, to the interview proper. I want to start with the most famous extract from Dorothea Mackellar's poem, My Country: I love a sunburnt country,A land of sweeping plains,Of ragged mountain ranges,Of droughts and flooding rains. Do you really love the sunburnt nature of parts of Australia? What goes through your minds as people from the land? What was life like on the farm around Christmas time growing up? I have family in Karoonda and often Christmas is pushed out or brought forward depending on weather conditions and crops. Some landowners close to the River Murray are having an anxious time either being flooded or being threatened by floodwaters or by having to come up with contingencies due to transport disruptions, what have you heard? What would you like us city folk to keep in mind when we head out and saturate farming areas for our Christmas holidays? 01:03:46 Musical Pilgrimage In the musical pilgrimage, we have Without It by Lucas Day from the album, Swell. Lucas says ‘Without It' started as a song about the ego - but has come to mean something more. It's a bell that chimes anytime his bad habits rear their ugly heads. He's hoping it will fuel positive change in anyone who needs it. It takes time to learnYou are not your thoughts That's the opening line of this song and Lucas Day is spot on. Trouble is, most of us go flat out all the time and don't get a chance to actually stop and notice our thoughts. Belle and Pods, do farmers get more of a chance to have time to reflect, when either sitting in a tractor for hours on end or travelling long distances or doing repetative mending or cleaning? Have you had any ah-ha moments of thought while out and away from distractions? And do you think it is due to not having distractions or is there something about being closely engaged with animals, plants, dirt, and weather? At the time of recording, Lucas has a busy December 2022 ahead: wed 21st - Cabana Clubfri 23rd - Marion Hotel 4pm DUO w/ Rachel Coppen]fri 23rd - Moseley Beach Club 7:30pmtue 27th - Fox Creek Wines 1pmwed 28th - Terra & Sol 6pmthu 29th - SandBAR 5pmfri 30th - The Stag 12pmfri 30th - The HWY 6pmsat 31st - The Stag DUOSupport the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

An unedited, unprocessed excerpt from an attended (listening meditation) night-to-dawn recording made in a small pine forest on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. Most, if not all, pine forests here are plantation forests of introduced pine species; and most tend to be adjacent to large tracts of pastoral land for the grazing of cattle and sheep. Different pine forests can have quite different acoustic effects. There is also a significant difference between sounds entering the forest from beyond its limits (such as the occasional calls of cows and sheep that can be heard in this recording, and some of the more distant bird calls), and those produced within it (such as the various native birds that can be heard in this recording, including Australian Magpies, Australian Ravens, and, in particular, the fairly nearby song calls of a Fan-tailed Cuckoo). Recorded on land of the Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri peoples. Recording by Khristos Nizamis

Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
Karen Pater was born in Sydney, spent her teenage/early-mid adult life in Perth, and in recent years moved to South Australia settling in the Fleurieu Peninsular. Despite taking up playing the harmonica initially whilst living in Perth, initially inspired to play this instrument after seeing Matt Taylor play, and Matt encouraging her to continue playing, Karen eventually became frustrated by the lack of ways to learn how to play. The pre-internet days meant relying on learning to play by ear whilst listening to records, and eventually, life got busy with work and other commitments, so apart from jamming with friends or attending an open mic, Karen didn't have much of an opportunity to advance her natural talent. All of this changed in recent years when she moved to South Australia, Karen was asked by her friend Heather Frahn if she would like to play with her band Heather Frahn & The Moonlight Tide at the Deep South - Roots, Blues & Folk Festival in 2013, giving Karen the opportunity to fulfill her dream of playing at The Gov on the main stage. Since marrying and retiring from nursing, Karen has had the time and the opportunity to rediscover her love of the harmonica. The first band that she joined in SA was called 'Billy Goat Boogie, and when a couple of the band members decided to move on and form their own band The River Rats, they asked Karen if she would be interested in joining them. The River Rats started in 2019 with the aim of putting together a blues repertoire to then gig at local bars and festivals. The 'Rats, as they've become known, have built a very strong following on the Fleurieu Peninsular and surrounding areas with their brand of cool blues classics and original songs. The band includes Karen Pater (harmonica and percussion), Garry Searle (lead vocals, drums, and guitars), originally Michael Porter on guitar, now replaced by Caitlyn Rault, and Paul Kraack (vocals, bass, and guitars). Through the challenges of COVID-19, Paul and Garry built a song-writing collaboration and began recording a number of original songs - and the band created the EP titled 'Hold On'. Two singles 'Hot And Cold', and 'Wildflower' were released around Christmas 2021 on all streaming services. In January '22, their blues song ‘Wildflower' achieved national recognition when it hit number 3 on the Australian National Radio Airplay Project regional charts. The 'Rats continue to gig around the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia and perform their originals and R&B classics. Music "Band It About" theme song, written and recorded for the BAND IT ABOUT - Podcast Series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. The Mediterranean isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of South Australia but perhaps it should. We Call This Place... Kaurna Yarta is a series of daguerreotype photographs of places on the Kaurna nation. The Kaurna nation is an area predominantly on the Adelaide plains in South Australia, but it also stretches down into the south to Fleurieu Peninsula and the Mount Lofty Ranges, as well as Kangaroo Island. These places, when South Australia was colonized by the British in 1836, a lot of the indigenous place names were ignored, and the British renamed a lot of the places either after British people or British places. There's a few German names as well from the German migrants. There wasn't that many original Aborginal names recorded in the Kaurna region, because it really was the first place to be colonized by the British so they named a lot of the places after the first migrants. And so this series, I wanted to rename the places with Kaurna names. I used a combination of historical names that we know, but also the contemporary Kaurna language committee has been renaming places if they don't know what the old name is, and giving dual names so there's the British name and the Kaurna name. In this series I'm just laying the Kaurna name over, and taking control of our land and inserting our language back into the country and back into photographs. In these images, I've used a specific type of round hand from the 19th century with the Kaurna names laid over top. The round hand was used by the missionaries when teaching Kaurna people how to use Roman numerals with writing Kaurna language. We have a lot of letters written in Kaurna language taught by German missionaries in this type of round hand. In some way, I was trying to reinvigorate the time when those languages were spoken using this type of writing. The images are displayed on Kaurna design, these geometric shapes such as this wavy line which references riverways. These designs all mean something to us and they are all part of our identity, so I wanted to overlay them on top of our imagery. The tones in the images are gold, which refers to the gold that was around daguerreotype photographs in the 19th century, as well as the red which refers to our most precious resource, which was red ochre, which to us is like gold.

Suzie Riley"Working from a straw bale studio in the bush, Suzie Riley is a South Australian artist living on Peramangk country in the beautiful Adelaide Hills. Immersed in a landscape that is central to her work, daily walks are a ritual that give her an opportunity to notice subtle shifts of light and shadow, colour and form. Plain air sketches in pastel or gouache are seeds for later work in the studio where she allows these impressions to filter into her work. Drawing on a sensitive knowledge of pigment, and a confident use of tone she explores how opposites reveal each other, seeking a balance of chaos and harmony, and a natural rhythm in the landscape.Working primarily in oil, initial layers of transparent and opaque paint are built up with variations of calligraphic mark and thick impasto brush marks to add texture and expression, each successive surface echoing the passage of time."https://www.artworxgallery.com.au/artworx-artists/suzie-rileySuzie Riley Art can be viewed and purchased at this gallery:Artworx Gallery and Gifts is one of the leading contemporary Art Galleries on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula.Artworx Gallery & Gifts opened in October 2005 in the historic river port of Goolwa, 80 kilometres south of South Australia's capital city of Adelaide. Band It About - Proudly Supporting Live Music "Podcast Series"
THE 'MURRAY DELTA JUKE JOINT', (formerly 'The Wreckers'), has undergone an amazing transformation since David Lloyd and Greg Button decided to take on the Live Music Venue in 2020. When I interviewed David for The Engine Room (S2E8), he talked a bit about the venue and I wanted to see what it was like, as my band had played at there in 2019. I decided to check it out on the same weekend that "The Fallen Saints" were playing there, I attended the gig on the Saturday night (footage available from gig on my Facebook page and YouTube), and went back on the Sunday to chat with the new venues owners. I would like to thank my partner Nick for being my cameraman for most of the interview, listeners have the choice of podcast or vodcast (video). If you would like to watch this interview please head over to my Band It About YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/h1b1jG-BA1k Background: Greg and David had their eyes on this venue for a while, having said that if it ever became available they should get it. The opportunity came along at a time when venue owners worldwide were bracing themselves for the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. About half of the world's population was under some form of lockdown by April 2020, government's implemented measures to attempt to slow the spread of the Coronavirus and flatten the curve. Venues were closed, and with no way of knowing how long for, many feared permanent closure. With the C-19 Pandemic crippling the Music Industry overnight, the last thing on most people's minds would be to take on and renovate a Venue, but for Greg and David it was perfect timing, as I discovered during my recent visit to the MDJJ. The Murray Delta Juke Joint is on the Fleurieu Peninsula, in Australia's first Cittaslow Town, Goolwa. Once a thriving River Port – the last on the Murray River before it reached the Southern Ocean, and the only place in Australia where paddle steamers and steam trains met to carry produce inland for shipping overseas. Greg and David fill me in on some of Goolwa's colourful River Port history; the Goolwa Hotel where the figurehead from the Mozambique, (a ship wrecked off the Coorong coast in 1854) can be seen, and other information leading to me finding out why they named the venue (which is modelled on the juke joints of Louisiana and New Orleans) the Murray Delta Juke Joint! Music: "Band It About" written and recorded for the Band It About - podcast series by Catherine Lambert and Michael Bryant. Murray Delta Juke Joint: 4 Dowdodd Cres, Goolwa, South Australia. Licensed from Thursday till Sunday, beer, wine, spirits and soft drinks available. Events are advertised on the Murray Delta Juke Joint Facebook page https://m.facebook.com/Mdjukejoint/ A mailing list is available for those wishing to receive upcoming events info. Enquiries and bookings Phone: 0413 160 922 Friendly staff, cosy atmosphere, and Superior Sound, the Murray Delta is sailing towards a Best Live Music Venue Award! #murraydeltajukejoint #Goolwa #livemusicvenue #banditabout #SouthAustralia --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dianne-spillane/message

Tim Shaw, Glass Artisthttp://timshawglass.com/“ I tend to create both through inspiration and intuition.Sometimes it's a long and arduous process to even get the glass to do what I want it to do – and it's ultimately in the hands of the glass gods really. I think that's what I love about it the most though…” Tim Shaw“Born in Cyprus and raised in Yorkshire, Tim has explored his artistic practice and glassmaking skills throughout the world. He has three degrees in glassblowing. Attaining his BA (Hons) from North Staffordshire Polytechnic in the UK in the early 80's, he went on to study at the avant-garde Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, where he continued to develop and experiment creating a unique style of art glass. Upon his return to the UK Tim established a hot glass workshop in London. Whilst there he was invited to undertake his second MA at the prestigious Royal College of Art in London. Moving permanently to Australia in 2002, Tim is currently based with his family and hot glass studio nestled in the stringy bark forests of the Adelaide Hills.http://timshawglass.com/about-me/Tim Shaw Glass is exhibited and for sale at many different galleries including Artworx Gallery and Gift in Goolwa South Australia. Welcome back to the Mould cheese Podcast where we talk to the makers, growers, farmers and families who just happen to make the best cheese in Australia. We are back again this year to continue the conversation with the Brie-liant people in our growing collective orbit.. Expect to hear stories from more cheese producers, a mini series on drinks matching with the some of the industry's best before getting to the nitty gritty of how cheese is made and also chatting with independent cheesemongers that champion Australia's best. It's going to be a Gouda year! So, to today's episode ... It begins with a house cow and a milk moment. Here I chat with Julie from Robe Dairy about heirloom cultures, the beauty of good milk and the small town of Robe they call home. The journey started after a taste of real quality jersey milk in Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia. It was that moment that Julie discovered the potential her house cow, affectionately called Rosie had to produce some amazing cheese. But this wasn't aiming for perfection but rather personality, and caring for a small herd of just 20 cows. Then, thanks to the unique cultures they use, Robe Dairy cheese is packed with bundles of personality. This was actually recorded last year so forgive us for the delay in getting this live!
Peter Coad describes himself as a "Painter of Landscape"“Peter spent the first 10 years of his life in the Mallee town of Karoonda approximately 120kms south-east of Adelaide, South Australia, where he was surrounded by huge, infinite and vast landscape. This explains his connection with wide-open spaces and the vibrant colours that nature presents, and which have an immense influence on his work. For subject matter he makes regular artistic journeys to many destinations in Australia and overseas, where he chooses locations that he can mindfully connect to and which have a strong spiritual and indigenous history. The cultural understanding and knowledge gained of each place clearly assists in his capturing the essence and feeling of the land in his paintings.”http://www.petercoadart.com.au/Peter Coad's artwork can be purchased at the Artworx Gallery at Goolwa"Peter's paintings reveal to us landscapes of harsh yet breathtaking beauty as he skilfully blends symbolic interpretations of mountains, wetlands, vegetation and bird life in an endeavour to convey an awareness of the delicate balance of the environment." https://www.artworxgallery.com.au/Artworx Gallery and Gifts is one of the leading contemporary Art Galleries on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula.Artworx Gallery & Gifts opened in October 2005 in the historic river port of Goolwa, 80 kilometres south of South Australia's capital city of Adelaide. More than 700 people live on Coochie, which was first discovered by Europeans in 1799 when Matthew Flinders landed there. It’s possible to live on Coochie and commute to Brisbane CBD in about an hour. •Kangaroo Island located 10 km off South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula coast. The island is home to 5,000 residents. It was cited by both Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin (who named it Ile Bouda) in 1802. The island’s biggest town, Kingscote, was the first colonial settlement in South Australia founded in July 1836 some five months prior to the founding of Adelaide. •Browse Islet is a small uninhabited island 180 km off the Kimberley Coast (north of Derby). Browse Islet is the first place that a hostile force (the Japanese) landed in January 1944 when a party of 6 was on a reconnaissance mission to see whether the Americans were developing a naval base nearby. The used Browse Islet as a safe base from which to explore the (Kimberley) mainland, where they landed, wandered around for half a day or so, and left seeing and reporting nothing of interest.•Boundary Islet is a small (2 ha) uninhabited island located 56 km southeast of Wilson’s Promontory which is the southernmost tip of Victoria. In 1801 Bass Strait was discovered by Europeans who then set about determining the boundary between Tasmania (then Van Diemen’s Land) and the then colony of New South Wales which extended from Wilson’s Promontory to Cape York. A latitude line was determined that allocated most Bass Strait Islands to Tasmania, but Boundary Islet’s precise location was incorrectly determined as being a km or so further north, placing it in what would have been Victoria’s offshore island remit. More accurate surveying two decades later found that the gazetted and agreed state boundary latitude actually dissected one island, namely Boundary Islet. Accordingly, the modern-day boundary between Victoria and Tasmania includes an 85-metre common land boundary running east-west through Boundary Islet in the Hogan Group of islands. And so, yes, it is possible to walk from Victoria to Tasmania… on Boundary Islet. •Montague Island is located 9 km off the coast from Narooma; it is uninhabited; it was sighted by Captain Cook in 1770 and given its current name by the master of the second fleet in 1789.•Tiwi Island is located 50 km off the Darwin coast and contains a largely indigenous population of just over 2,000. A catholic priest stationed on Tiwi saw and reported incoming ‘formation’ aircraft in February 1942 about 20 minutes in advance of the bombing of Darwin. The alert was miss-identified as returning American planes and so no action was taken to prepare Darwin for the imminent raid.•Abrolhos Islands located 80 km west of Geraldton was the site of the Batavia shipwreck in 1629. This is a ripping (and tragic) yarn that took place just off the Australian coast but within what we would now call Australian sovereign territory.

Hugh Dawson (T: @HPJDAWSON, I: @hpjdawson) grew up on a relatively small hobby farm in the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia. He had nothing to do with the live export chain until he decided to partake in a gap year on a cattle station in the Northern Territory after finishing school. Currently he is onto his 5th year working as the Head Stockman on Beetaloo Station. He believes it is crucial for us as young industry representatives to share the story of the live export chain to ensure we can continue to improve animal welfare standards globally. Uniting Communities (https://www.unitingcommunities.org/) has shut its office in Murray Bridge (https://www.5mu.com.au/news/local-news/40-local-news/103483-uniting-communities-shuts-murray-bridge-office) in order to centralise administrative operations in Adelaide. The organisation had to make the tough call due to financial constraints amid the roll-out of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Senior Manager of Community Services Sarah Watson says the physical building was something the non-for-profit had to forgo in order to continue services. She joins Jennie Lenman to explain. Uniting Communities offers support in the Murraylands, Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and South Coast (among other SA regions) in mental health and counselling; residential aged care and support for independent living; housing crisis and emergency support; disability services; services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people; financial and legal; drug and alcohol counselling; family relationships; and respite and carer support. The administrative office in Adelaide can be reached on 1800 615 677 (tel:1800 615 677) or via email enquiries@unitingcommunities.org (mailto:enquiries@unitingcommunities.org) .
The Economic Impact of bushfires and COVID-19 restrictions has been huge in the Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu Peninsula and Kangaroo Island regions. Even with subsidies and support, there has been a huge drop in job numbers and gross regional product for business, particuarly in the tourism and hospitality sector. But there is a silver lining with a number of significant projects and initiatives that could immediately boost job numbers and assist with economic recovery. Joining Jennie Lenman to discuss is CEO of RDA Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island (https://rdahc.com.au/) , Damien Cooke.

Peter Radcliffe- "I am one of the lucky few who have found their passion in life. For me, teaching (and learning from) people who want to find out how to best utilize the mind is what life is all about. And I get to do that every day and meet amazing people along the way." Peter Radcliffe is a highly experienced and well-regarded meditation teacher and NLP trainer. He teaches students through the lens of a calm mind to help bring peace, happiness and joy to their lives. Peter's unique background as a Buddhist monk empowers his retreats to be so much more than an ordinary getaway, it becomes a journey in itself. Born and raised in Adelaide, Peter worked as an engineer for twenty years. He became interested at an early age in the practices of different philosophies and religions and studied elements of Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Sufism, modern psychology and NLP. Peter travelled the world living and working for many years in the United Kingdom, Middle East, America, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan and throughout Australia. In 1993, at the age of 22, Peter spent time as a Buddhist monk in the rainforests of Thailand. During this period and since then, he has completed many meditation retreats, some up to as long as nine months in total solitary meditation. Peter began coaching and teaching meditation to small groups in 2004. He left the corporate world behind in 2009 to teach meditation, NLP, and personal development full time. Peter is based on the Fleurieu Peninsula, an hour south of Adelaide, and is married with three young children. Website Listen to another #12minconvo

This episode comes to you live from Australian Regional Tourism Network Convention 2015. This event was held in Victor Harbor in the Fleurieu Peninsula of South Australia. Although not every issues raised at the convention is covered off in this podcast episode it does gives some taste of the key themes and topics to come out of this regional tourism event. Mark Olsen was the master facilitator of this event. See more about him and Earth Check here http://earthcheck.org/about/our-people/ and Mark kicks of this podcast sharing the difference between a conference and convention and that a manifesto and direction for ARTN is to be developed out of this convention in which they will bring regional issues to national platforms such as Federal Ministers, State Tourism Organisations CEO's, Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF) and Australian Local Government Association amongst others. "The timing is critical...for the first time in a long time we have actually seen regional tourism organisations fold altogether in 2015. We see three states undertaking reviews of their regional funding and their regional governance models...." Mark Olsen. "With more Australians travelling overseas than any other time in our history, that domestically RTO's are saying how do we maximise our share, how to we hold Australians here, how do we gain share of voice in this cluttered market place.." Mark Olsen. "The Bunsen burner is really on for regions, and their ability to demonstrate their influence." Mark Olsen. At the 4.50 minute mark we then spoke to Mark Dowd CEO of the City of Onkaparinga about their relationship with a sister city in China, learnings from that relationship and the key role WeChat plays in that ongoing relationship. Very Interesting! From the 9.00 minute mark we chat to Liz Ward from Tourism Tribe and Lynne Hocking from Webnoise about their key take aways from the convention. Liz discusses that there seems to be an appetite for change which is refreshing and the discussion around the clarity of brand in regional areas. Lynne comments about the need for industry development especially in regional areas as well as the growth in importance on caravan and camping (I agree). People who work in regional tourism need to have that realisation that they are working in these tiny little micro moment opportunities to connect with people - that they have to be connected all the time like the consumer is connected says Liz Ward. (I agree there is still a massive resistance to social media and digital across the tourism industry). From the 13 minute mark we chat to Miranda Lang Executive Officer Fleurieu Peninsula Tourism. We talk about collaboration (which I personally think is a key theme from the event). Miranda mentions the KISS rule and sometimes we need a reminder to keep things simple. From the 16 minute mark we talk to Graham Perry from Inland Tourism NSW. Graham mentioned collaboration and that we can't ignore the digital economy. See the Inland NSW new consumer tourism website https://www.travelin.com.au and for more on this see this article. From the 18 minute mark Mark Olsen facilitator of the event wraps up some of the key outcomes and direction for ARTN going forward. From more please check out an article I wrote for KarryOn Travel on the ARTN Convention. This week in Adelaide's Yesterdays it is 'school memories' to honour the conference in Adelaide this week looking at the next wave of challenges facing school design and construction. Chloe from Yelp gives us five great places to go to enjoy Winter better this year - all around Adelaide, the Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula. Dr Dino Hodge returns for part two of the interview about his book, Don Dunstan: Intimacy and Liberty (a political biography). We also cover Adelaide's water (it's better than legend would have you believe), Peter Goers, and Peppa Pig - pick the odd one out! Plus wine from Sir Richard Branson, music about the death of Dr George Duncan, and an Adelaide Visa Council that not only crosses borders, but crosses the floor of parliament. Did someone mention Martin Hamilton Smith? We also stumble across an actual Boring Conference which we'd like to bring Down Under.
