Seems like King in the North Andy Burnham fancies his chances of taking over Labour and giving the troubled government new direction. Is talk of a leadership fight just pot-stirring – or is Starmer in real trouble? And who else is in the frame? In this episode of Playwright's Spotlight, long time friend and standup Henry Phillips stopped by to discuss another aspect of writing for the stage - Standup Comedy. Henry shares his origins into the craft and business of standup, his approach to comedy and knowing when you've got the right joke, the use of Twitter as a testing ground, and how to segue into the next joke. We also talk about voice vs character, the ideal length of a joke, having jokes stolen, testing material and drawing from life, dry spells and branding as well as confidence and commitment in performance. In addition, we touch on building up to being a headliner, relationships and invitations, comedic potential and when's too soon to joke about a topic. It was a lot of fun to learn to hear Henry's pathway to his success. I hope you enjoy it. Henry Phillips is an actor, writer, musician and standup comic. He has played hundreds of cities across the country and around the world. He has recorded five comedy albums including On the Shoulders of Freaks, Number 2, Why Haven't I Heard From You, L.A. Dreams, and Neither Here Nor There. He's appeared in multiple episodes of Silicon Valley as well as Season Two, Episode 4 of Drunk History. He is the co-writer of both Punching the Clown and Punching Henry and stars in the hit web-series Henry's Kitchen. To view the video format of this episode, visit -https://youtu.be/7UI9zTfzt2ULinks mentioned in this episode -Gengis Cohen -https://www.genghiscohen.comThe Improv -https://improv.com/hollywood/Dr. Demento -https://www.drdemento.comThe Second Degree -https://www.imdb.com/video/vi2560076569Websites and socials for Henry Phillips -https://henryphillips.comhenrys.kitchenTwitter/X - @henlipsIG - @henlipsTwitch - @henlips1YouTube - @henryphillipsWebsites and socials for James Elden, PMP, and Playwright's Spotlight -Punk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the show

In this week's episode, we sit down with Huidi Xiang to talk about her work in our current exhibition “Neither Here Nor There” at Lydian Stater in addition to how gaming influences her work, the overlaps between digital gaming assets and NFTs, the ethics of underpaying oneself, the problems of underpaying others, repetition as a metaphor for labor, the tragedy of The Villager's Down Special Move in Super Smash Brothers, the importance of faux material in her sculptures, the impossibility of building the ideal IKEA product, and repetition as a metaphor for labor. Huidi Xiang (b. Chengdu, China) is an artist and researcher currently based in Brooklyn, New York, USA. She holds an MFA in Art from Carnegie Mellon University (2021) and a BA in Architecture and Studio Art from Rice University (2018). In her practice, Huidi makes sculptural objects, installations, and systems to examine the spatial and temporal effects of inhabiting both virtual and physical worlds in late capitalism. By reimagining and reconstructing elements from different contexts, including on- and off-line, she creates works to construct a realm situating in between, intending to articulate the emerging politics and critical issues associated with the ever-expansive merging between the physical and the virtual, the real and the simulated, and the fact and the fiction. Huidi's works have been exhibited internationally, including OCAT Biennale at OCT Art & Design Gallery, Shenzhen, China, LATITUDE Gallery in New York, USA, Contemporary Calgary in Calgary, Canada, Hive Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, China, Miller ICA in Pittsburgh, PA, USA, Center for Architecture and Design in New Orleans, LA, USA, and South London Gallery in London, UK. In this episode of Neither Here Nor There, Eduardo Aquije shares his story of moving to the US as a teenager leaving his friends and prior life back in Peru. In the states, he was not just a teenager who was initially angry with his parents for leaving home, he also became an illegal immigrant when his parents decided to overstay their visas. Being a teenager is hard as is, being a teenager who is also illegal comes with different challenges. The hard choices Eduardo’s parents made gave him opportunities he would otherwise miss.

Her story "Five Ways to Fall in Love on Planet Porcelain" was a 2012 Nebula Award finalist. John Barth described Cat Rambo's writings as "works of urban mythopoeia" -- her stories take place in a universe where chickens aid the lovelorn, Death is just another face on the train, and Bigfoot gives interviews to the media on a daily basis. She has worked as a programmer-writer for Microsoft and a Tarot card reader, professions which, she claims, both involve a certain combination of technical knowledge and willingness to go with the flow. Comedian, author, podcaster and performer Sean Cullen joins the Invasion for this episode. Sean talks about how his love for speculative fiction started with works such as Tolkien's The Hobbit, Mr Bass's Planetoid by Eleanor Cameron, Stephen R Donaldson's Lord Foul's Bane, and Asimov's Foundation and Robot stories. We discuss the ups and downs of following a series, especially a long-running collection. And he talks about what makes a good story. Sean and I dissect the Star Wars franchise, especially the prequel trilogy and the latest stand-alone focussing on Han Solo. We also talk about Space 1999 and Star Trek, and how science fiction is often a product of its time, and whether it's possible to go back to and enjoy your first loves in the genre. We then get into a discussion of more recent favourite books, including the works of Neal Stephenson, Dan Simmons, and Kim Stanley Robinson. And we reminisce about the madcap fun of The Hilarious House of Frightenstein. We also talk about the books Sean has written for kids, including Hamish X and the Cheese Pirates and The Prince of Neither Here Nor There, as well as a superhero-themed novel he's currently writing for adult audiences. And Sean shares his thoughts on occasionally working science fiction references into his stand-up comedy. Our interview took place in June 2018 via a Skype call between Sean's headquarters aboard The Seanpod, currently drifting along the bottom of James Bay, and my studio in the Lair of bloginhood, located in a sumptuous beach house on the shores of a methane lake on Saturn's moon Titan. Christmas comes a bit early this year as Craig turns the mic over to listener Dylan Vance, who presents his audio drama adaptation of Rod Serling’s “Escape Clause.” It’s his gift to the podcast, which we're thrilled and delighted to share with all of you. So much awesomeness on deck! The wonderful Tom Elliott (The Twilight Zone Podcast) gives a dramatic reading of Richard Matheson’s “Disappearing Act,” the genesis for the classic Twilight Zone episode we’re focusing on this week, “And When the Sky was Opened.” We’ve also got Dr. Reba Wissner on speed dial to school us on the musical stylings of Leonard Rosenman. Somehow this week’s episode ended up almost two hours long, so… sorry in advance. Opening theme: “Neither Here Nor There (rare 3rd Variation)” by Twin Loops “Smooth Operator” performed by Sade (from the album Diamond Life, © 1984 by Epic Records) Radiohead’s “How to Disappear Completely” performed by Made of Wood (from the album Narcotherapy Hypnosis, ©2017 by Made of Wood) The Twilight Zone is a trademark of CBS, Inc. Witness a boy, a girl, a department store at night… and a whole lotta creepiness. Craig celebrates vintage radio with a special look at “Evening Primrose,” a 1947 episode of Escape based on the classic John Collier short story…. Which kinda maybe sorta inspired Rod Serling’s “The After Hours.” Opening theme: “Neither Here Nor There (3rd Revision)” by Twin Loops “Take Me to the World” (from Stephen Sondheim’s Evening Primrose; performed by Neil Patrick Harris and Theresa McCarthy; copyright 2001 by Nonesuch Records) The Twilight Zone is a trademark of CBS, Inc. Our pal Dr. Reba Wissner returns to further educate us on All Things Twilight Zone Music. The focus here is Bernard Herrmann’s chilling score for the classic radio drama “The Moat Farm Murder,” which would go on to appear in several Twilight Zone episodes. After the chat, stick around for the radio drama itself, an unsettling account of a murder that takes place, if the title is to be believed, on a farm of the moat variety. This week Craig (finally) kicks off a new batch of episodes with “I Shot an Arrow into the Air” and “The Rip Van Winkle Caper,” two classic Twilight Zones in which Rod Serling doles out cosmic justice like a true karmic badass. And make no mistake, there will be blood: casualties include a few bottles of water and a small watermelon (don’t worry, it’ll make sense when you listen). We’re back! Well, kinda sorta: this week frequent guest Dr. Reba Wissner seizes control of the podcast to bring us Music in The Twilight Zone: Hearing Rod Serling’s Vision, a multimedia presentation she gave at New York’s Ithaca College on February 17, 2017. Turns out it translates almost perfectly to the audio-only realm, and we’re immensely grateful that she’s granted us exclusive permission to present it here. OH MY GOD do we have a treat for y’all this week! The irrepressible Fred from the internet’s third most popular Twilight Zone-based podcast---- the renowned and beloved Twilight Pwn--- came to town for one night only, and he graciously consented (likely against his better judgment) to sit down for a beer and a brief chat. So we’re suspending the usual episode analyses format this week… it’s the least we can do for a certified goddamned podcasting legend. This discussion was recorded on 11/17/2016 in the Bunk Bar’s sandwich shop in Portland, Oregon, so expect a lot of background noise… it’s basically cinéma vérité, audio-style. http://twilightpwn.tumblr.com/ http://www.goldensuits.com/ Opening theme: “Neither Here Nor There” (revision 1) by Twin Loops Closing music: “Is It Wrong” by Golden Suits (from the album Kubla Khan, copyright 2016 by Hit City U.S.A.) Welcome! Join host Craig Beam (the My Life in the Shadow of The Twilight Zone blog) as he compares and contrasts two Rod Serling classics: “Where is Everybody?” and “King Nine Will Not Return.” One will emerge the victor, and the other… well, you’ll have to tune in to find out. Somewhere in the all the chaos Teresa pops in to dole out some trademark spousal emasculation; also listen for a special appearance by Dr. Reba Wissner, PhD (author of A Dimension of Sound: Music in The Twilight Zone) and an unexpected connection between The Twilight Zone and Nine Inch Nails. http://www.emmytvlegends.org/interviews/people/fred-steiner# Opening theme: “Neither Here Nor There” by Twin Loops Closing music: “Earl Holliman State of Mind” by DJ Crabby CraB The Twilight Zone is a trademark of CBS, Inc. “Where Is Everybody?” by Lorraine Feather (from the album Tales of the Unusual; copyright 2012 by Jazzed Media) “Where Is Everybody?” by Nine Inch Nails (from the album The Fragile, copyright 1999 by Nothing/Interscope) Day of Our Lives theme composed by Charles Albertine, Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart (copyright Corday Productions and NBC) Between Light and a Shadow: A Twilight Zone Podcast is a nonprofit podcast. Comedian, actor and musician Henry Phillips (Henry's Kitchen, Silicon Valley, Punching the Clown) stops by the show to talk about his new comedy special Neither Here Nor There and how he's "always found failure to be hilarious." We also talk about his evolution from musician to comedian, growing up the son of a character actor, always playing someone named Henry, the genesis of the wildly popular cooking show parody Henry's Kitchen, relationships, You and Your Fucking Coffee, Doug Stanhope, social awkwardness and so much more. One of our favourite conversations at last month’s Banter weekend at Other Voices in Dingle, Co Kerry was the one with Jean Curran, the Waterford-born photographic artist and photojournalist joining us by the fire at Foxy John’s as Storm Desmond raged outside. Jean talked at length about her From Both Sides project, involving taking portraits of US military in Afghanistan which were then painted by hand by an Afghan artist, as well as such projects as Neither Here Nor There, about young middle-class Malawian students moving to Ireland, and The Shoreline Cast, focusing on fishermen working from a deserted beach in Kenya. Make sure to check out her work at http://jeancurran.com
