This week I've gone crackers. I've wondered for awhile why it's biscuits everywhere else - but sometimes ... it's crackers. I mean, the most British of British claymation - Wallace and Grommit, when they go to the moon to get cheese, even they bring crackers.... not biscuits. That, and a few other things had me wondering if crackers and biscuts DIDN'T come from the same source? Rather did the two just meet in America. Turns out - that's what it was.It was Douglas Mack of The Snack Shack that got me stared with this post on biscuit and cracker mysteries of the past: The Snack That's a Secret IngredientAnd here are the llinks to @oliviacooks excellent cracker recipes made with sourdough discard:Love & Olive Oil - Sourdough CrackersSiicilian Parchment Sourdough Crackers (pane carasau)both include a non-sourdough version.Find out how it was New Sweden all along. In episode 76, I revisit a case I previously discussed with Brandie from Evaporate the Missing. Missing in Maine, three stories - Attiin Shaw, Stefanie Damron, Erik Foote and the town of Washburn's involvement of a tragic outcome that did not have to be. This episode examines the circumstances surrounding each case and questions that continue to linger. Advances in DNA and investigative genetic genealogy is changing how we look at crime. Ancestry, 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA, and GEDmatch have become instrumental in solving long-gone-cold cases. I revisit the case of Attiin Shaw, missing from a small Maine town since September 2021. Her family cannot get any information about their missing daughter and sister. Her children have to face life without her, and her husband hasn't offered any insight into her disappearance. A 14-year-old girl from Maine has been missing for over a month, having last been seen leaving her home in New Sweden and venturing into the nearby woods. Stefanie Damron was reported missing on September 24, a day after she was seen walking out of her house on West Road. The Maine State Police Department confirmed the timeline, emphasizing the mystery surrounding her disappearance, which has left her family and the local community in distress. Despite extensive search efforts involving the Maine State Police and the FBI's Child Abduction Rapid Response Team, a report released on October 23 indicated that Stefanie has not yet been located. Authorities have mobilized all available resources, including the state's Computer Crimes Unit, to assist in the search. The local community has rallied together, with many residents participating in search efforts, hoping to uncover any clues that might lead to the missing teenager. However, it has been noted that the Damron family has chosen not to engage in these community-led search initiatives. The circumstances surrounding the Damron family's move to New Sweden from Texas add another layer of complexity to this case. The family relocated after what was described as a troubling situation involving Child Protective Services. In a Facebook post from 2019, Stefanie's father, Christopher Dale Michael Damron, expressed a desire to escape painful memories associated with their past in Texas. This history includes a police incident where both parents were arrested for alleged intoxication while their children were left unattended in a vehicle. Following this, Stefanie's mother, Lisa Marie Damron, faced legal repercussions but ultimately received a lesser charge. In a post following her daughter's disappearance, Lisa Marie suggested that Stefanie had left home, further complicating the narrative surrounding her vanishing. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/locatingthelost/support

Just before dawn on September 15, 1655, the same day Pieter Stuyvesant would extract the surrender of New Sweden on the Delaware River, more than 500 Indians of various tribes from along the Hudson paddled more than sixty canoes to New Amsterdam in lower Manhattan. They ran through town shrieking and vandalizing, but neither Dutchman nor Indian was harmed until the Indians were about to leave after having met with the city council. Then somebody shot and wounded Hendrick van Dyck with an arrow, and the Dutch militia, under the command of a drunken and incompetent officer, opened fire on the retreating Indians. Three on each side died in the skirmish. The Indians retaliated. Over the next few days, attacks on Staten Island and and in New Jersey would take fifty Dutch lives and more than 100 European prisoners. So began "The Peach Tree War," which was followed by two even more violent wars at the settlement of Esopus, in today's Kingston, New York. Sir Edmund Plowden (or Ployden) designs an American Colony for which he and his seventeen children will rule as lords over feudal estates, aided by the Knight of New Albion, intent on spreading Catholicism by the book or the sword. However, the territory granted to Sir Edmund by King Charles I overlaps that of New Netherland, New Sweden, an offshoot of the New Haven Colony and the Leni Lenape. Despite the overwhelming challenges ahead, Sir Edmund sails to the New World to set them all straight. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/osoa/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/osoa/support

It is now 1648. In this episode, two tough guys, Johan "Big Belly" Printz of New Sweden and Peter "Peg Leg" Stuyvesant of New Netherland, escalate their competition to control the critical Delaware River, now an essential artery for the fur trade coming out of Susquehannock territory in Pennsylvania and points farther west. Sweden and Netherland were at peace in Europe, so there would be no shooting, but all sorts of guns would be pointed without pulling the trigger or lighting the match. Eventually, the Dutch would put together the largest European army in North America since Soto and Coronado in the 1540s, and put an end to New Sweden as a political entity, raising the Dutch flag over the forts at today's New Castle and Wilmington, Delaware. Along the way we hear the horrific story of the Katten, a Swedish ship full of settlers that ran aground just off Puerto Rico. Everybody survived the immediate crisis, only to fall into the hands of the Spanish and then the French on St. Croix. Folks, don't let that happen to you. We are back in New Sweden. In 1638, shortly after establishing Fort Christina at the site of today's Wilmington, Delaware, Peter Minuit would die in a hurricane on the way back to Sweden. The settlers left behind would go a year and half before another supply ship came, but they would survive with remarkable pluck. They were well-housed, because the Finns among them would introduce the log cabin to these shores, and they would trade effectively with the Lenape and Susquehannock nations. Then in 1643 a new governor would arrive, Johan Printz, a 400-pound giant of a man who would boot out the New English who tried to settle on the Delaware, and keep the pressure on the Dutch who also claimed both sides of that river. Under Printz's authoritarian and also competent administration, New Sweden would prosper, go on a building boom, and explore the interior of Pennsylvania, all in spite of very little help from home. The Dutch under Willem Kieft - we've met him before - wouldn't challenge New Sweden in this period because they were under pressure from the New English to the east and the Indian groups around Manhattan. Then, in 1647, Pieter Stuyvesant would arrive to govern New Netherland, and everything would change again. In podcast time, we've been knocking around the northeast of today's United States for just about two years, starting with the Popham colony episodes back in December 2021. The recent high water mark, as it were, is 1647 or so, with the recovery of Maryland by the Calverts after the plundering time. We are not entirely caught up to that date, however. We need to get back to see what happened to New Sweden since its first year in the late 1630s, and the New Haven colony, which extended its writ to New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Pennsylvania, deserves a couple of episodes. In the 70+ timeline episodes since Martin Pring's expedition of 1603 and Champlain's St. Croix settlement in Maine, we've talked about English, Dutch, and French settlement and exploration in today's United States as local stories, but we have not looked at the big picture, or at least not very often. Even I'm getting confused! So in this episode we'll do our best to bring it all together, which ought to make the next few episodes a bit easier to follow. Teach Me Sweden is a Swedish History podcast by comedians Jonathan Rollins (US) and Erik Broström (SE). Each week one of them reads a true story from Swedish History to the other one who likely knows nothing about it.In this episode, Jon teaches Erik about the time in the 1600s when Sweden (and other countries, for that matter) tried its hand at colonization across the Atlantic in what is now the United States of America. The area is in what is now the northeast part of the US, places that Jon actually has driven through. There's nostalgia, idiocy and fun history as always. Sweden's greatest king, Gustavus Adolphus, aspires for Sweden to become a maritime and commercial power in the Atlantic, and engages Dutch entrepreneurs to advise him and his councilors how to do it. The Swedes recruit Peter Minuit, the erstwhile governor of New Netherland and the man who acquired Manhattan island from the Lenne Lenape tribe in the region. Eager for a new gig in the New World, Minuit leads two Swedish ships with Dutch crews - the Kalmar Nyckel and the Gripen - to the site of today's Wilmington, Delaware. Minuit would meet with the chiefs in the region and acquire, in one fashion or another, the west bank of the Delaware River from roughly the site of Philadelphia International Airport to Cape Henlopen. New Sweden would survive and at times prosper for 17 years, but Minuit, tragically, would not live more than six months after landing again in the New World. For more on Minuit's career in New Netherland, you might listen to "The Purchase of Manhattan and Other Dutch Treats." Goren and Bishop search for clues after someone poisons churchgoers on a secluded island. They believe it's connected to the fatal drowning caused by a sabotaged rowboat and a gonorrhea outbreak from teen sex parties. The detectives home in on the reverend's charming nephew and a group of impressionable girls. During interrogation, Goren gets in the teen's face...and he gets in Goren's.We're talking about Law & Order: Criminal Intent season 3 episode 8 "Sound Bodies." Our guest is Katie Mitchell from the podcast A Date with Dateline. This episode is inspired by the 2003 case of poisoning at a church in New Sweden, Maine.
On April 27, 2003, 27 members of a 50 member church congregation at the Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in New Sweden, Maine gathered for a meeting to discuss the purchase of a new furnace for the church. While at the meeting, 16 members drank coffee from one of two urns holding coffee for the congregation. These 16 members ended up being treated for severe vomiting at two hospitals, one member, named Walter Reid Morrill passed away at the age of 78 due to this illness. Upon investigation, police determined one of the urns holding coffee had been poisoned with extreme levels of arsenic. To this day, the case is closed due to police believing they knew who had done it, but the town is divided in whether the case should reopen and find the accomplices or remain closed and let bygones be bygones. When I first moved to the US in 2003, I lived in the south of New Jersey, very close to both Delaware and Pennsylvania. Little did I know at that point that I was moving into a part of America that had once been a Swedish colony called New Sweden. So today I want to do a historical overview of Sweden's presence in America. The focus will be on the colony New Sweden in the years 1638 - 1655, but I will look at Swedish emigration to the US between 1851 - 1930 where 1 of 5 Swedes lived in the USSupport the showThank You for listening to A Swedish Fika. Join us this week as we dive back into Chester Pennsylvania in the world of New Sweden and the earliest Swedish settler Joran Kyn, who eventually started the Keen family line here on the East Coast! William Penn once again makes an appearance and Commodore John Barry. How exciting it was for Jackie and Charlotte to find this! Just who is James Sandle-hands?
New Sweden, Maine, named for its community of Swedish settlers, was a quiet farming community in the early 2000s. Everyone knew everyone in the town of six-hundred people. When a mysterious illness breaks out one morning after church, it seems too suspicious to purely be coincidence. In the past rival claims to New Netherland were laughable, the Dutch had control over the Hudson (North), the Delaware (South) and and the Connecticut (Fresh) river. Then New Sweden stole the Delaware, and the English took the Connecticut. Peter Stuyvesant destroyed New Sweden with the largest professional army ever assembled in that part of the world up until that point. Stuyvesant also negotiated a treaty establishing a border with the New England colonies, only giving up on paper what he already had no plans to recover. New Netherland was now stable and the population exploding under Stuyvesant, in less than 20 years growing to be ten times in size. Still the English Colonies outnumbered the Dutch colony 10:1, and the tides were turning... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/osoa/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/osoa/support

INFAMOUS MAINE TRUE CRIME, 2003: Walter Reid Morrill heard there were leftovers from the bake sale the day before. They would be the perfect pairing for the strong Swedish coffee always served in the fellowship hall after Sunday service. What Reid and his fellow parishioners didn't know on the morning of April 23, 2003, was that their strong Swedish coffee was tainted, and one of their own was responsible for what would become one of the largest intentional mass poisonings in modern medical history, using a substance that was known all too well among the small community of potato farmers. This is the case of The New Sweden, Maine Church Poisonings. Find the sources for this episode in the show notes at darkdowneast.com. In this lecture, Professor Totten argues the Middle Colonies of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware were multi-ethnic and multi-racial societies that practiced more religious and cultural toleration than the Chesapeake or New England. New York began as a Dutch colony, New Netherland, which had relatively positive relations with nearby native tribes. In addition, women had more rights than in English colonies, as they could obtain divorces, own property, and give testimony in court. New Sweden, a Swedish colonial project, was absorbed by New Netherland, Eventually, the English captured the capital of New Netherland, New Amsterdam, during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. As a result, the English removed many of the rights enjoyed by women and reinforced slavery in the colony.Pennsylvania, by contrast, was a proprietary colony run by William Penn and his descendants. This colony differed from others, due to its large population of Quakers, a protestant sect that stressed equality and pacifism. Due to the middle-class origins of many Quakers, the colony quickly prospered. New Jersey and Delaware had large populations of Scottish and western European settlers and had relatively small economies, which were overshadowed by the more powerful New York and Pennsylvania. Thus, the Middle Colonies had eclectic ethnic, racial, and religious populations that were relatively tolerated, compared to the Anglican South and the Puritan North. New Sweden is unsteady after the disappearance of Minuit, however its' leaders are able to sweet talk and manipulate Willem Kieft, leader of New Netherland. Johan Printz becomes governor of New Sweden and perhaps the largest man in the Americas, but then Peter Stuyvesant takes commad of New Netherland and the two of them play a long game of Geo-Politcal Chicken over the Delaware river. To this day, the case is closed due to police believing they knew who had done it, but the town is divided in whether the case should reopen and find the accomplices or remain closed and let bygones be bygones. sources: Imhoff, Frank. Historian Abdullah R. Muhammad examines a previously little-known and virtually untold aspect of Delaware’s history—the hidden role of Africans in the often brutal mercantile expansionism by European colonizers in the 17th century. Swedish and Finnish communities on the East Coast, called New Sweden, played a significant role in forming the foundation upon which Delaware was eventually built.
