My name is Ginger DeHaan; my trail name Iris. I'm a mother of eight, grandmother of four, wife of a Chef, and wrangler of three sassy dogs. I also teach first grade at a title one school in upstate South Carolina. Each year I pretend thru-hike my students. Last year we did Bama-to-Baxter. This year, we completed the Eastern Continental Trail (ECT). Next year we will school calendar year Triple Crown!!! From Leave No Trace Principles to Trail Magic, we incorporate as much love and respect for the outdoors as possible. As well, I am Appalachia. I did not realize just how much until I started hiking on and around the AT. Each time we go to the trail we find more and more direct family history. I have had the opportunity to walk the footsteps of my ancestors who called regions of the trail home. I'm in the beginning stages of sharing what I do in the classroom on Instagram, Facebook (pending), and YouTube. If you'd like to follow along, check out the links below. On today's episode of the Free Outside Show, we're joined by Grant Barnette—a thru-hiker turned Pro ultrarunner who has tackled some of the toughest races in the world. Grant has hiked the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, holds the DC Peaks 50 course record, placed 2nd at Grindstone 100, 5th at Speedgoat 50K, and was the third American at CCC at UTMB. Most recently, he signed a pro contract with Craft. Follow Grant online: https://www.instagram.com/runwithgrant/ We dive into how he transitioned from carrying a heavy pack on the PCT to discovering Angeles Crest 100 in middle of a thru-hike, his nomadic lifestyle living out of his truck while chasing FKTs, and his journey through ski mountaineering and backcountry adventures in Utah. He shares his take on training with a job, fueling strategies, sponsorships, and the challenges of race selection for the US Trail Team. Plus, we discuss the controversial selection process for the World Trail Running Championships, how social media and live-streaming influence race prestige, and what it's like lining up next to Jim Walmsley at UTMB. Takeaways Grant Barnett has a rich background in trail running and ultra events. The transition from through-hiking to competitive running can be inspired by encounters on the trail. Living in a truck and pursuing a passion for running can lead to unexpected opportunities. Ski mountaineering offers a unique training method for ultra running. The importance of mentorship in outdoor sports is highlighted through Grant's relationship with Joey Campanelli. Media coverage significantly influences race popularity and athlete opportunities. Qualifying races for championships may not always reflect true mountain running skills. The culture of ski resorts can mirror the lifestyle of through-hikers. Nutrition and hydration strategies change drastically in winter sports. Community support and shared experiences are vital in the outdoor sports world. Wasatch 100 is a historic race but lacks hype. Experiencing a DNF can be deeply embarrassing. Bouncing back from a DNF is crucial for growth. The bond between twin athletes can be unique and supportive. Modern running science is complex and ever-evolving. Finding what works for your body is essential in fueling. Crew support can significantly impact race performance. The emotional toll of racing can be challenging to navigate. The evolution of race formats keeps the sport dynamic. Shoes and gear have advanced significantly in recent years. Send us a Text Message. There's something magical about the trails, and Ace Brown just confirmed that for me all over again. From his start on the flat tracks of Florida to the rugged terrain of Colorado's peaks, Ace's transition into mountain running is as much a testament to the sport as it is to the human spirit. Join us as we trek through his journey, laugh at the inception of the Cut the Cheese Run Club, and examine what it truly means to lace up and hit the mountain trails. Witness the camaraderie that binds runners together, the races that set their hearts pounding, and the moments of personal triumph that can't be measured by a finish line.Ever wondered what draws an artist to the mountains? Ace, a Savannah College of Art and Design alumnus, paints a vivid picture of how a diverse environment and the mentorship of coach Patrick Reagan shaped his athletic path. As we trace Ace's footsteps from collegiate competition to the buzz of Colorado's mountain running scene, the conversation reveals the energizing spirit of athletes that gather in places where the air is thin but the community is thick. It's a narrative that'll have you itching to join a run club or at the very least, cheer on those who brave the elements to run where the eagles dare.Looking into the heart of mountain and trail racing, we uncover how the sport thrives beyond just the physical challenge — it's an economic conundrum, a strategic game, and a narrative of friendships built on shared struggles and triumphs. Ace delves into the economics of the sport, the rise of mountain racing, and the delicate dance of competition amongst friends. And with a scoop on the latest footwear trends to strategies on mastering the descent, this episode is like the trail mix of mountain running wisdom—packed with insights, surprises, and the kind of energy that keeps you going long after the race is over.Check out Ace on his Instagram at - @acebrownrunningCheck out Colorado Springs' newest run group led by Ace - The Cut the Cheese Run Club on Instagram at - @cutthecheeserc and Strava at Cut the Cheese Run Club

Trail magic is a term used by hikers along the Appalachian Trail that describes the unforeseen help and support provided by others as you make your hike. Trail magic is given to hikers through transportation, food, and genuine kindness, but it is not done out of expectations for something in return. Though everyone may have a different reason for offering trail magic, the general consensus is that people do it out of kindness, and as their way to "give back. What would our networking journeys look like if we were the beneficiaries of trail magic along the way? Today's episode is a little different. Rather than share a new conversation, I have put together a few of my favourites from the past six and a half years of doing this show. I often listen back to these for inspiration, energy, and their timeless ideas on life and investing. Internally, we call these forever episodes because they'll likely still be as relevant and popular a decade from now as they were when they first aired. The first conversation you'll hear is with Sam Hinkie. Sam worked for more than a decade in the NBA, helping pioneer the use of data and analytics, originally with the Houston Rockets and finishing off as the GM of the Philadelphia 76ers. In life after basketball, Sam launched his own venture capital fund, 87 Capital. Sam's approach to everything is about finding great people, and he has taught me more about that topic than just about anybody else. The second discussion is with Boyd Varty. My original conversation with Boyd, way back in 2017, had a huge impact on me and I'm sure you'll hear why. He grew up in the South African wilderness, living amongst and tracking wild leopards. He talks about the art of tracking and how the same strategy for pursuing animals in the wild can be applied to all aspects of our lives. Rather than following well-trodden paths, we should all explore and look for original experiences. He might still have the best answer I've ever heard on the podcast. The last conversation you'll hear is with Charlie Songhurst. Charlie is the former head of strategy at Microsoft, and a prolific investor having personally invested in nearly 500 companies through his career. Within one minute of meeting Charlie, you can tell that his mind is sparkling with ideas and curiosity. It's no wonder he was among the most commonly requested guests. Charlie would always come up when I asked top investors and CEOs who I should have on the show and he often still comes up as people's favourite guest. Sam, Boyd, and Charlie are all exceptional in their own way and I hope you enjoy these condensed versions of our conversations. You'll find links to the full, original episodes in the shownotes. Enjoy and share them with friends and loved ones who you think will benefit from these original thinkers.    Sam Hinkie - Find Your People Boyd Varty - The Art of Tracking Charlie Songhurst - Lessons from Investing in 483 Companies    For the full show notes, transcript, and links to mentioned content, check out the episode page here. -----   This episode is brought to you by Tegus. After Blissful punctures her sleeping pad, she meets a trail angel who manifests her own magic and gets her replacementIn this episode:It's an extraordinary night on the edge of a ridge in the Four Peaks Wilderness with wind like a jet engine in the towering pine above her tent. After gorgeous streams, the trail meets a road, dull and long. A trail heads steeply down on rocks into a canyon along Boulder Creek where the frogs sing a chorus. Blissful makes the mistake of camping on what looks like luxurious grass, but turns out to have sharp points that cut into her mattress. It's a short, but circuitous, walk up and over the canyon towards the road where she quickly catches a hitch to Payson, where Margaret just happens to be at the right place at the right time to snag her a new mattress. MUSIC: Poema del Pastor Coya by Angel Lasala and Pastorale Calchaqui by Hector Gallac as played by Alison Young, flute and Vicki Seldon, pianoSupport the show

For me, the new year often brings with it dreams of big adventure. In the podcast recorded the spring of 2020 I connect with my friend and colleague Heather Cole as she talks about her adventures on the Pacific Crest Trail. In 2019, Heather had the chance to embark on a bucket list trek that many of us can only dream of, a month long trek on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). The trail provided so much more than just adventure.  It provided deep wisdom that we all can benefit from during this time of distance and isolation.
