On Thursday 21st May, we learnt of the passing of Matt Biggs - horticultural everyman, incredibly nice guy, and titan in both knowledge of our industry and hobby, but also fabulous communicator as well. Matt's career spanned all mediums from Tv, Book, Press and also Radio, where he spent 30 years delighting Garden Question Time audiences with his passion and wit for horticulture. Lucy and Saul count Matt as a true garden friend having spent a lot of time with him during the show season and elsewhere - where all we can say is he truly was Gardening's Nicest Guy. Matt was battling cancer till his death, and was very vocal about the support he wanted to make to the Mount Vernon Sanctuary Garden project that he was spearheading. Over his thirty plus year career in comics, Archie Goodwin racked up a lot of accomplishments. He wrote horror stories for lots of Warren Publishing's anthologies. At DC, he wrote Detective Comics, Manhunter (more on both of those later), and was the editor behind Batman: Black and White, the early issues of Legends of the Dark Knight and James Robinson's Starman. At Marvel, he co-created The New Universe (they can't all be winners...). But possibly the biggest accomplishment, before his untimely passing in 1998, was that he was regarded as the nicest guy in comics. Everyone loved Archie. We cover: The complex geological history of the Rhône and all the “ingredients” that make the terroir what it is today The biggest differences between the northern and southern Rhône How climate change needs more attention from Rhône producers and how winegrowing and winemaking practices (trellising, too much destemming, the fashion of “phenolic ripeness”) have augmented the alcohol and “bigness” in many Rhone wines Irrigation and acidification and why each have their positives and negatives The grapes of the region, the diversity of those grapes ,and which will be the winners or losers in climate change We discuss some specifics of the regions: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, specifically why there are so many different styles and why some are $20 and some are $500 Crozes-Hermitage and how to find a good one (hint: Matt's book is how you find a good one**! Matt mentions the town of Gervans as a granite area. Welcome to the Peak Endurance podcast! Episode 180 is an episode where Ron and I chat with one of Scott Beams. Ron and I met Scott when I asked for pacers for my 7 Peaks FKT. Scott stepped up to the plate and was brilliant in his pacing duties. He then helped in my fundraising run for Red Nose Day when I ran from Bourke St Mt Buller to Bourke St in the city. He has also helped many other people achieve their running goals. In this episode we discuss how he got into running, his training, nutrition and sleep schedules.
