In an episode first reported in 2017, we bring you a look up and down the US nuclear chain of command to find out who gets to authorize their use and who can stand in the way of Armageddon. President Richard Nixon once boasted that at any moment he could pick up a telephone and - in 20 minutes - kill 60 million people.  Such is the power of the US President over the nation's nuclear arsenal.  But what if you were the military officer on the receiving end of that phone call? Could you refuse the order? In this episode, we profile one Air Force Major who asked that question back in the 1970s and learn how the very act of asking it was so dangerous it derailed his career. We also pick up the question ourselves and pose it to veterans both high and low on the nuclear chain of command. Their responses reveal once and for all whether there are any legal checks and balances between us and a phone call for Armageddon.Special thanks to Elaine Scarry, Sam Kean, Ron Rosenbaum, Lisa Perry, Ryan Furtkamp, Robin Perry, Thom Woodroofe, Doreen de Brum, Jackie Conley, Sean Malloy, Ray Peter, Jack D'Annibale, Ryan Pettigrew at the Nixon Presidential Library and Samuel Rushay at the Truman Presidential Library.EPISODE CREDITS: Reported by - Latiff NasserProduced by - Annie McEwen and Simon Adlerwith help from - Arianne WackSignup for our newsletter! A Minnesota man has made a discovery that sheds light on the history of United States drug policy. Former President Richard Nixon, who started the war on drugs, privately said that marijuana was not dangerous.“I know nothing about marijuana,” Nixon said in a recording from the Oval Office on March 6, 1973. “I know that it is not addictive and dangerous and all the rest of it and all the kids are in favor of legalizing it. On the other hand it is the wrong signal at this time.”The Nixon tapes are in the public record as part of the Nixon Presidential Library, but these statements were unearthed by Minnesotan Kurtis Hanna and first reported in the New York Times. Kurtis Hanna works in the cannabis industry and is a lobbyist. He shares his findings with MPR News host Cathy Wurzer.

It has been called “The Greatest Speech Never Given.”  Drafted as a contingency plan for President Richard Nixon on the occasion of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the memo entitled "In Event of Moon Disaster" is inarguably a better piece of writing than any of the presidential remarks actually delivered on that day.  Penned by White House speechwriter William Safire, today it is hailed as a work of rhetorical and poetic genius. It has inspired major Hollywood features, played a central role in moon landing anniversary observances, and even been used as a tool to educate information consumers on the dangers posed by deepfake technology. And yet from July 20, 1969 until its rediscovery in 1999, this striking piece of American history remained buried in obscurity, its brilliance unrecognized among the millions of pages of documents archived from the Nixon administration. So in this episode of the Lead Balloon podcast, we will track the path of the "Greatest Speech Never Given," from William Safire's desk, to Nixon's Chief of Staff, to its disappearance from and re-emergence in the national discourse. Dwight Chapin, who served as Deputy Assistant to President Nixon and helped plan the Public Relations strategy for the moon landing, will tell us more about his colleague Bill Safire, and how they positioned the moon landing from a strategic communication context. Joe Lopez, the Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the Richard Nixon Foundation, will discuss the memo's rediscovery and display in the Nixon Presidential Library. And Francesca Panetta and Halsey Burgund, co-directors of the viral Emmy-winning short film “In Event of Moon Disaster,” will discuss their decision to reimagine the remarks by using deepfake technology to synthesize a video of Richard Nixon actually delivering the momentous speech. The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently delivered a long speech at the Nixon Presidential Library. The topic is "Communist China and the Free World's Future". This speech is also called the "Iron Curtain Speech" of the 21st century because of many It is believed that like the "Iron Curtain Speech" delivered by the former British Prime Minister on March 5, 1946, which opened the curtain of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II, Pompeo's speech will also open the "new cold war" of China and the United States in the 21st century. I suggest that everyone who is concerned about Sino-US relations read it, because only after reading the full text will you know how deep the prejudice and misunderstanding of some people in this US administration are towards China and how strong their hostility towards China is. After reading it, whether you are on the left or on the right, can you truly "give up your illusions on the Sino-US relationship.Pompeo declared that the previous US government policy of engaging China did not meet the original target of induce change in China. China did not follow its design, taking the western liberal democracy path of. This is actually the common "logic" of the US's China policy in the past few years. The core view is that the US has helped China integrate into the international system, but China has not followed the Western path as the US expected. For many people in China, this is totally incomprehensible: how come a country with a history just 200 years is so arrogant to think they can set the development path and direction for an ancient civilized country with five thousands years of civilization ?After reading the words of American officials such as Pompeo, China's strategy in the near future should still be "abandon illusions, persist in struggle, hold the bottom line, and watch for changes." Regardless of the trade war or geopolitical competition between China and the United States, China does not want to cause trouble, but if the United States really wants to cause trouble, China will fight to the end.For China, the most important thing is to strengthen confidence and maintain unity and rationality internally.China Explained will show you that because of China's continued success in industrial upgrading, technological innovation and realizing its huge potential, it is an unstoppable process. The inevitable rise of China may feel intimidating and some simply reject it. Don't be. More importantly, we will answer the million-dollar question: how can you, as an individual or a small business owner, also profit from the rise of China ?Creating original content is hard work, your support is what keeps us going. The Death of Engagement: America’s New Cold War with China | Orville Schell

Hidden Forces

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2020 63:32

In Episode 149 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Orville Schell, Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society about the implications of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's monumental speech at the Nixon Library, the history of engagement with China’s Communist Party, and what a New Cold War with China will mean for the future of peace and security. Dr. Schell’s career as a China scholar spans the entire arch of US-Sino relations since Nixon’s fateful trip to the Middle Kingdom in 1972 and the opening up of China to the world. The same year (1967) that Dr. Schell earned his master's degree in Chinese studies an astounding 70 percent of Americans agreed on one thing: the greatest threat to U.S. security was the People’s Republic of China. After fifty years of engagement where relations between the two nations would improve dramatically, Americans are now back to viewing China as an enemy. A Pew Research Center poll conducted in March 2020 shows that roughly two-thirds of Americans now say they have an unfavorable view of China, the most negative rating for the country since the Center began asking the question in 2005, and up nearly 20 percentage points since the start of the Trump administration. Positive views of China’s leader, President Xi Jinping, are also at historically low levels. In a recent speech delivered at the Nixon Presidential Library, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared the failure of 50 years of engagement with China and called for the free world to stand up against this “new tyranny” in what felt very much like the beginning of a new cold war.  “It’s true, there are differences,” remarked Pompeo, when contrasting China to the USSR. “Unlike the Soviet Union, China is deeply integrated into the global economy. But Beijing is more dependent on us than we are on them.” “I reject the notion,” he continued, “that we’re living in an age of inevitability, that some trap is pre-ordained, that CCP supremacy is the future. . . . If we bend the knee now, our children’s children may be at the mercy of the Chinese Communist Party, whose actions are the primary challenge today in the free world. General Secretary Xi is not destined to tyrannize inside and outside of China forever unless we allow it.” In their conversation, Orville Schell and Demetri Kofinas discuss the speech, what it means for US-Sino relations, and the implications of disengagement for the US, China, and the world. Lieutenant Colonel Robert "Buzz" Patterson, United States Air Force (Retired), is a military pilot, distinguished White House military aide, bestselling author, leadership consultant, and popular conservative speaker. He is running for Congress as a candidate for CA-7. Among Patterson’s literary efforts include two New York Times best sellers, Dereliction of Duty and Reckless Disregard. His most recent books include War Crimes and Conduct Unbecoming. Patterson served 20 years as a pilot on active duty in the United States Air Force and saw tours of duty world-wide including combat operations in Grenada, Bosnia, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Rwanda, and Haiti. From 1996 to 1998, Colonel Patterson was Military Aide to President Bill Clinton. During that time, he served at the right hand of President and Mrs. Hillary Clinton and was responsible for the President's Emergency Satchel, otherwise known as the "Nuclear Football," the black bag with the nation's nuclear capability that accompanies the president at all times. As such, Patterson had an office and a bedroom in the White House and accompanied the First Family at all times. In addition, Colonel Patterson was operational commander for all military units assigned to the White House, which included Air Force One, Marine One, Camp David, and the White House Transportation Agency.  It was during these years that Colonel Patterson, disgusted and appalled with what he’d personally witnessed in the Clinton White House, developed his conservative vision. Today, he believes in restoring our nation’s constitutional principles and returning our nation to its rightful place as the “shining city on a hill.”Among his many military commendations, Patterson received the Defense Superior Service Medal for accomplishments while at the White House and was awarded the Air Force Air Medal for flying combat support missions during the Bosnian War in 1994. He retired in 2001 to pursue a career as a writer, consultant and conservative speaker. He’s a frequently requested public speaker with appearances at UC-Berkeley, Gonzaga University, the University of North Carolina, St. Louis University, Pepperdine University, UCSB, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, the Richard M. A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 16 "Turnarounds, Veterans, and a Tribute to Senator John McCain" with Don Brandt, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle West  Interview with Don Brandt, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle West (Ticker: PNW) and the turnaround of the company’s principal subsidiary, regulated utility Arizona Public Service through regulatory processes; also hiring military veterans and reservists; and, a tribute to the late Senator John McCain.  This episode is dedicated to our military veterans and to the memory of Senator John McCain of Arizona. Welcome to Episode 16. I joined Don Brandt, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Pinnacle West, more commonly known as Arizona Public Service, under azure Phoenix skies in early March of 2018. $3.5 bln revenue Pinnacle West Capital Corp. is an energy holding company based in Phoenix, Arizona, has consolidated assets of about $17 billion, about 6,200 megawatts of generating capacity and 6,300 employees in Arizona and New Mexico. Through its principal subsidiary, Arizona Public Service, the Company provides retail electricity service to nearly 1.2 million Arizona homes and businesses.  This episode is dedicated to our military veterans and to the memory of Senator John McCain of Arizona.  Arizona Public Service has its origins within a storied past. Natural and man-made infrastructure were key to the settlement of the western US and provide the backdrop or dramatic context for wild west legend and lore. Railroads access, river crossings, mining, water resources, and power generation were antecedent admixtures to the conditions for statehood in the west. Arizona Public Service was founded five years after the infamous gunfight at OK Corral and a quarter century before Arizona became a state. The company has served Arizona for more than 125 years.  Thanks for listening.  We can’t improve without your feedback – write us through our website www.LeadershipLyceum.com and subscribe on iTunes.  See you next time. These include the Casino Entertainer of the Year Award, recipient of the “Best All Around Entertainer” Las Vegas which he has won a total of four times, and previously three times in Atlantic City; Jukebox Artist of the Year Award from the Amusement and Music Owners Association of New York; The Ellis Island Medal of Honor one of the nation’s most prestigious awards; The Bob Hope Award for excellence in entertainment from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society honoring his efforts on behalf of our nation’s veterans. Tony’s tireless work on behalf of our veterans led to his being named Honorary Chairman at the 40th Anniversary at the NAM-POW’s Homecoming Celebration at the Richard M. Nixon Presidential Library in 2014. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Eisenhower Foundation as well as Honorary Chairman of Snowball Express, an organization that serves the children of our fallen military heroes. Tony also hosts the Congressional Medal of Honor dinner every year in Dallas to honor our Medal of Honor recipients. He has also served as the Master of Ceremonies at the Secretary of Defense Freedom Awards at the Pentagon.  Few entertainers have excelled in so many realms as Tony has: a top selling recording artist, songwriter, concert headliner, network television star, Motion Picture actor, Broadway performer and author. Tony was also GM and Vice President of CBS-Music Division April-Blackwood Music from 1966-1970. He represented such songwriters as James Taylor, Laura Nyro, Blood Sweat and Tears and signed and produced Barry Manilow’s first recording while working for the legendary Clive Davis. Grammy Nominee Tony Orlando has sold millions of records, including five number one hits: “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree,” “Knock Three Times,” “Candida,” “My Sweet Gypsy Rose” and “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You).”  “Tie A Yellow Ribbon” was the number one Billboard Song of 1973 and became Orlando’s theme song, and grew into an American anthem of hope and homecoming, reunion and renewal. He has 2 Platinum albums, 3 Gold albums and 15 Top 40 Hits. Tony Orlando and Dawn rank among the Top 100 Billboard Magazine artists of all-time.  The enormously popular Tony Orlando and Dawn television variety show ran for four seasons, from 1973 to 1977, on CBS.  The show catapulted Tony Orlando and Dawn from popular recording artists into major stars. Tony Orlando and Dawn was the first multi-racial singing group to star in a network television series.  Tony is still one of the most popular live concerts artists, and has headlined around the world and entertained for five US Presidents.  Like a painter, Tony is an artist who steps onto a stage as if it were a blank canvas. Each show he weaves colorful emotions set to music touching the deepest part of a person’s heart. A 2016 review says it best, “The truth is: Tony Orlando is more than a singer. He has the ability to reach an audience, touch us inside, and connect with us on a higher level with his voice, style, and values.” Tony is a recipient of three American Music Awards and two People’s Choice Awards for best male entertainer. For outstanding achievements to the entertainment industry Tony was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Orlando has a wife Francine, a daughter Jenny and a son Jon.   Thomas B. President Richard Nixon once boasted that at any moment he could pick up a telephone and - in 20 minutes - kill 60 million people.  Such is the power of the US President over the nation’s nuclear arsenal.  But what if you were the military officer on the receiving end of that phone call? Could you refuse the order? This episode, we profile one Air Force Major who asked that question back in the 1970s and learn how the very act of asking it was so dangerous it derailed his career. We also pick up the question ourselves and pose it to veterans both high and low on the nuclear chain of command. Their responses reveal once and for all whether there are any legal checks and balances between us and a phone call for Armageddon. Reported by Latif Nasser. Even a century after Richard Nixon’s birth, his life and political career are still almost always considered in light of his demons and dark side. But former New Yorker editor Jeffrey Frank, author of Ike and Dick: Portrait of a Strange Political Marriage, chose to dissect Nixon in an entirely different context—that of his relationship to his boss and eventual in-law, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, for whom Nixon was a two-term vice president. In a conversation with former Nixon Presidential Library director Tim Naftali, he explained how this relationship may have influenced the rest of Nixon's life and career.
