In this episode of Nurses Uncorked, Nurse Erica and Nurse Jessica Sites welcome Michelle Mahon, Director of Nursing Practice at the California Nurses Association and National Nurses United (NNU). They discuss the ongoing advocacy for federal nurse-patient staffing ratios and the pressing issue of workplace violence in nursing. Michelle responds to backlash from a recent interview given by NNU's Industrial Hygienist. The conversation highlights NNU's commitment to improving workplace safety and advocating for comprehensive healthcare solutions. In this conversation, Michelle Mahon discusses the importance of organizing, solidarity among nurses and the critical role of safe staffing in preventing such incidents. Michelle emphasizes the significance of collective action among nurses and the need for mental health support in the face of workplace challenges. The discussion also touches on the importance of Medicare for All in shifting the focus from profit to patient care, and the structure of the National Nurses United (NNU) and its affiliates in advocating for nurses' rights and healthcare justice. In case you've been asleep or under a rock for the past six months, we need to let you know two things: First, Kendrick won his beef with Drake, and second, there is a presidential election coming up. Like any presidential election year, everyone's so focused on the big showdown at the top of the ticket, but that means that a lot of the local and state races, congressional races, and referenda that will make up most of your ballot are getting ignored. Just because Anderson Cooper isn't covering your city's mayoral contest or your state's Railroad Commissioner race doesn't mean those elections aren't critically important in determining the immediate future of your community and getting important issues like healthcare on the table! So for this episode, we're going to leave the speculation about Donald and Kamala to Anderson and take our own 360 view of why we all need to get in on the down-ballot action and how we bring healthcare justice to the forefront of our election conversations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY6SAa8LU9c Show Notes We have two guests who know their way around a Get Out the Vote Drive! Jasmine Ruddy is the Assistant Director of Campaigns for National Nurses United. She helps lead NNU's political campaigns from Medicare for All to electoral work and more! Her background is in the climate justice movement and campus/student organizing in her home state of North Carolina Jonathan Cohn is the Policy Director at Progressive Massachusetts, which does multi-issue advocacy work. Jonathan wears many hats in the political space in Massachusetts and has been active in many progressive issue and electoral campaigns over the past little over a decade. Jasmine describes the local campaign that got her hooked: as a campus organizer for climate justice she helped win ballot measures to pass a regional transit tax. It was a concrete and tangible way to make an impact on the climate justice movement. Jonathan cut his political teeth on the Obama 2012 campaign, and got the local politics bug when Boston Mayor Tom Menino retired. Twelve candidates came forward for the first open mayoral race in 20 years. He was especially interested in public school policies and funding. He volunteered for mayoral candidate and City Council Member Felix Arroyo Jr. Ben confesses that while he loves democracy, he hates elections (#relatable). But he does find more hopefulness at the local level. He also got started in a mayoral election in Boston, but the most exciting campaign he worked on was for state house. He lived in one of the most progressive districts in the state but their state representative was a powerful, well-funded right-leaning Democrat. Ben's candidate, Nika Elugardo, a true progressive beat him despite all those advantages. Picture it: New Jersey, 1990s, tween Gillian lives in a suburb (North Plainfield) seeking to change its name to distance itself from the majority Black and Brown city of Plainfield. During a town-wide debate on the ballot measure, young Gillian spoke against renaming the city. She was quoted on the front page of the local paper: "North Plainfield shouldn't change its name. Stonybrook is just a dirty brook that divides our town, just like this issue is doing right now." The anti-name change side won and our star was born. We discuss the additional influence a voter can have when working on a local election. When races can be won or lost by a few dozen votes, the candidates care a lot more about each individual. They may knock on your door or call you seeking support, which is a great opportunity to insert the issues you care about into the election. Once your candidate gets elected, they'll remember the folks who helped them get there and you'll have more influence when lobbying them on the issues you care about. (You may even end up with a job.) Jonathan's personal philosophy is "Boo and Vote." He never liked Obama's catchphrase "don't boo; v...

We regret to report that companies are still trying to make generative AI that can 'transform' healthcare -- but without investing in the wellbeing of healthcare workers or other aspects of actual patient care. Michelle has over 25 years of experience as a registered nurse in various settings. Welcome to episode one hundred of New Creation Conversations. This week's conversation is with my longtime friend and colleague, Dr. Brent Peterson. Brent currently serves as the Dean of the College of Theology and Christian Ministries at Northwest Nazarene University (where he has been on faculty for the last 15 years). Brent is an alum of NNU, has a Master of Divinity degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary, and got his PhD from Garrett-Evangelical Seminary. In addition to his teaching, Brent has been in local ministry in a number of churches and is an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene. He has a great interest in theology related to the church, the formative nature of liturgy, and writes often about the intersection of theology and ecclesiology. In our conversation we talk about Brent's newest book – which is also the most recent addition to The Wesleyan Theology Series published by The Foundry – a book simply entitled The Church. It is the first of two contributions Brent is making to that series. In the Spring his volume on the sacraments will also be released. It is a wonderful series, a very helpful book, and (as you would expect from two old friends) a very fun and thoughtful conversation.
Beatrice and Abby speak with Jane Thomason of National Nurses United (NNU) about the latest in an ongoing campaign to stop the CDC from further weakening infection control guidance, how newly revealed documents show the CDC prioritizing employer costs and profits over public health, and how you can help lend pressure to NNU's campaign.

On the forty-fifth episode of All Heart with Paul Cardall, Paul is joined by Cathedral of the Rockies - Amity Campus pastor Benjamin Cremer, a gifted writer and teacher. Paul and Ben discuss Ben's journey to become a pastor, a brief history of Christianity and the cultural divisions in America. He believes the divisions are a result of people in the Church who abuse power, money, and a desire for control. Ben discusses authority, the Holy Spirit, and the longing believers have for community and to trust again in authority, though they've been hurt by the Church. Ben believes we need a Christian America that is Christ-like and embodies the patient, forgiving, merciful, humble fruits of the spirit. All Heart with Paul Cardall is sponsored by J.D. Netto's novel, The Broken Miracle, a 2-part fictional series with characters and real events inspired by the life of Paul Cardall, a world-renowned pianist born with only half a heart. Born in Nampa, Idaho, Ben said he felt called as a child to be a pastor. He earned a bachelors in Christian Ministries from Northwest Nazarene University, a master's in Spiritual Formation from NNU, and a master of arts in Theological Studies from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He also served as an adjunct professor of theology at NNU.During his ministry, Ben has traveled extensively to mentor pastors in other parts of the world who want theological education, but either can't afford the program or there isn't one where they live. This service has taken Ben to nations like the Congo and Rwanda in Africa. He's been to Myanmar, Thailand, and Cambodia to train pastors both in Christian Ethics and Biblical Interpretation. His wife Rebecca and Ben live in Boise, Idaho where he serves as pastor of the Cathedral of The Rockies Amity Campus. Rebecca M. Carroll - The Coaching Educator - joins Morning Light along with special guest - Dr. Lawanna Pierce - Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at NNU.
Kasper and Chris interview Russell Fulcher about the events occurring in Idaho including the rumored voter fraud. Professor Peter Crab from NNU talks about his article published on the need for immigration. Griner's guilty plea is also discussed.
We conclude our discussion with Dr. Joel Pearsall of NNU as he addresses the challenges of navigating the social, political, and racial issues as they play out on a university campus in the middle of a pandemic. He stresses the importance of listening to each other and being careful of how and when we speak. Dr. Pearsall discusses the challenge of realizing that the campus community was not as inclusive as they had taught and that there were people of color who felt like they were not being heard or understood.#nnu#faith, race and reconciliation@abovethenoise24abovethenoise24@gmail.com
Dr. Joel Pearsall is the president of Northwest Nazarene University, a Christian, liberal arts university in Nampa, Idaho. As with any educational institution, Dr. Pearsall has to run a university and continue to maintain the highest standards of teaching and learning while at the same time navigating the need to maintain its founding Christian values. Despite being a community within a community, the university community has not been isolated from the challenges that our world and the United States have had to face over the last 3 years: political and social disruption; a global pandemic that, for a time, forced education into a fully virtual format; new testing protocols; social distancing; hybrid work and teaching spaces. All these together have had an effect on how we as a community redefine function in the new reality and for institutions of higher learning the effect has been complicated and challenging. Dr. Pearsall shares his leadership lessons while leading in these difficult times. #NNU#abovethenoise24abovethenoise24@gmail.comwww.nnu.edu
Welcome to episode sixty-one of New Creation Conversations. I'm very excited in today's conversation to be joined by my friend and colleague from both NNU and here at College Church, Dr. Diane Leclerc. Diane has served Northwest Nazarene University for 24 years as Professor of Historical Theology. She is an alum of Eastern Nazarene College. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary and another Master's Degree in Philosophy and PhD in Theological and Religious Studies from Drew University.Diane has co-edited a series of books with Dr. Mark Maddix – Essential Beliefs, Essential Church, Pastoral Practices, and Spiritual Formation (each articulating a Wesleyan theological perspective in those areas). She has written one of the best summaries and introductions to Wesleyan-Holiness theology out there in her book, Discovering Christian Holiness: The Heart of Wesleyan-Holiness Theology. We talk about all of those works, but our primary focus is on her soon-to-be-released book (co-authored with [friend-of-the-podcast] Dr. Brent Peterson), The Back Side of the Cross: An Atonement Theology for the Abused and Abandoned (published by Cascade Press). As you will hear, this has been a book that has been percolating in Diane's life and thoughts for a decade or more, and it is wonderful that it is finally going to come out now. I had a chance to read a pre-publication edition of the book, and it has not only reshaped my imagination in so many ways related to the atonement and the significance of the cross, but it has helped me know how to extend transforming grace to those who have suffered at the hands of others. I'm biased, but I do think Diane and Brent's book has the chance to be deeply transformative in the lives of many people and will change the way those of you who listening and are pastoring will preach in the future. I'm thankful for this new book and the chance to bring this conversation to you.
MEE KA OLULU DI NA NWUNYE GI DI UTO; ABRAHAM BU NWOKE UDO
Today's show features Mary Ybarguen, women's soccer coach at NNU. She is here to discuss the current controversy surrounding transgender athletes and what the Christian response should be.

Welcome to episode forty-six of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by my longtime friend and colleague both at NNU and at Nampa College Church, Dr. Brent Peterson. Brent is the Professor of Theology and Dean of the College of Theology and Christian Ministries at Northwest Nazarene University. He also serves as the Pastor of Liturgical and Spiritual Formation at College Church. Brent is an alum of NNU. He has a Master of Divinity Degree from Nazarene Seminary and a Ph.D. in Liturgical Studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Brent is in his fourteenth year of teaching at NNU and his sixth year as dean.In our conversation Brent and I talk about his book Created to Worship: God's Invitation to Become Fully Human(published by the Foundry). We also discuss three of his forthcoming projects. One is a book he has co-authored with our colleague Dr. Diane Leclerc, entitled The Backside of the Cross. The others are two works that are part of the Wesleyan Theology Series: the first on The Church and another on The Sacraments. Brent and I have known each other since we were kids growing up in the same church in Seattle and I continue to learn so much from him about the formative nature of worship and the way our theology is not just learned in our heads but developed in us through our bodies.

Welcome to episode thirty-seven of New Creation Conversations. In today's conversation I am joined by a good friend, a gifted minister, and one of the few women who are currently serving as a District Superintendent in the Church of the Nazarene – Rev. Olivia Metcalf. Rev. Metcalf is a graduate of NNU and Nazarene Theological Seminary. She is currently working on her Doctor of Ministry degree at NTS as well. Olivia is a fourth generation ordained elder. She and her husband – Dustin – have co-pastored churches in California and Idaho. They also led the spiritual life together at NNU as co-chaplains for the university. She is the vice president of the Wesleyan Holiness Women Clergy and just recent became the District Superintendent of the Upstate New York District in the Church of the Nazarene. Much of our conversation centers around the Advent season that is just a few weeks away. Olivia is the author of this year's Advent devotional from the Foundry Publishing entitled, Come Peasant, King. It is a beautiful daily devotional for individuals, small groups, discipleship classes, or entire churches to do together. There are additional resources available from the Foundry for children, youth, and pastors that can assist in leading people through the spiritual formation of the season. In Come Peasant, King Olivia reminds the church that, as we prepare our hearts and lives for the coming of Christ, we also engage in a willingness to fully surrender to the call of God on our lives, wherever that may lead us. I'm deeply thankful for Olivia's leadership and friendship and excited to have this conversation with her. I'm also very thankful that you have chosen to sit in on this conversation with us.
Episode ten of New Creation Conversations is with Dr. Michael Lodahl - Professor of Theology and World Religions at Point Loma Nazarene University. Mike is finishing his 33rd year of teaching: 22 years at Point Loma and 11 years at Northwest Nazarene University. He is an alum of NNU and also has a MDiv degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary and a PhD from Emory University.Mike has written or edited eleven books and has served as a pastor to congregations in California, Georgia, and Idaho. In their conversation, Mike and Scott talk about three or four key theological themes that are central to much of Mike's work in such books as The Story of God, Renewal in Love, Relational Holiness, God of Nature and of Grace, When Love Bends Down, and Claiming Abraham.
Nurses in Florida represented by National Nurses United raise their fists during a demonstration protesting unsafe conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic. Photo from NNU. On this show: 0:08 – Are states running low on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) again, amid the surge in coronavirus cases? The union National Nurses United is leading calls for states to reimplement closure measures, and for the Trump administration to invoke the Defense Production Act to manufacture needed PPE for frontline healthcare workers risking their safety during the pandemic. We hear from NNU co-president Jean Ross (@NationalNurses). 0:21 – A group of tenants in a rent-controlled building on Genoa Street in Oakland are being evicted during the pandemic under the Ellis Act — and they say it's retaliation. Reporter Danielle Kaye (@danielledkaye) has the story. 0:34 – Rents in the Bay Area are dropping. How do tenants negotiate for lower rents as the market changes? We take listener calls with Eric Toscano of the Tenant Law Group, based in San Francisco. If you have a tenants' rights question you'd like us to follow up on, call our off-air voicemail box at 510-306-2371. 1:08 – California's moratorium on fracking permits quietly ended, and Newsom's government has been handing out permits to big oil. Environmental activists condemn the decision, and journalists have raised questions about the power of the oil and gas lobby in the Newsom administration. Hollin Kretzmann of the Center for Biological Diversity discusses the permits and advocates' efforts to force California to end fracking. 1:20 – The Oromo ethnic group in Ethiopia has been facing brutal repression after the latest wave of demonstrations over the killing of musician Haacaaluu Hundeessaa. Some U.S. Ethiopians have also been jailed in the recent protests in Addis Ababa, including residents of Washington State, prompting protests in Seattle. Temesgen Mengesha is the pastor at Grace Lutheran Church, an Oromo Lutheran congregation in El Cerrito. He talks with us about the history of repression of the Oromo people in Ethiopia, and the mounting daily death toll to violence. 1:34 – “Stop Hate for Profit” — that's the name of a major Facebook ad boycott led by the NAACP, Sleeping Giants, the Anti-Defamation League and Color of Change, charging that Facebook has failed to act to curb hate and anti-Black racism on its platform, resulting in violence. The civil rights groups are calling for major changes, and the company has so far failed to meet their demands. Advocates met with Facebook leadership yesterday. Our guest Nandini Jammi (@nandoodles) co-founded Sleeping Giants, a social media activism organization, as well as her brand safety consultancy, Check My Ads.
