The Warrior Point Trail is a 7 mile out-and-back stroll on a dirt lane along the bank of the Columbia River among cottonwood forests, grassy meadows, and several lakes. The lakes are never really in clear view, but in the winter you are aware of them, being the preferred locales of sometimes raucous Tundra Swans. I started off walking along the water, joining the proper trail the better part of a mile north. The light, fine rain sounded like tiny pin pricks on my hat and coat. The wake of a passing barge was still settling, even as it passed out of sight. I saw a cloud of Canadian Geese coalesce in the sky downriver and disappear as soon as they had come. The river was wide and serene. A crow winged by with a fish in its mouth. I zoomed in on the destination downriver, Warrior Rock Lighthouse. The smallest lighthouse in Oregon. Why is it called Warrior Rock, you might ask? Well, like so many things around here the words were chosen from the perspective of the explorer and put on a map, and it stuck. The tale of the encounter that inspired that name, most likely with the Cathlapotle band of Chinooks, goes like this:On October 28, 1792, a British exploration party paddling up the Columbia in the ship's launch and cutter boats encountered twenty-three canoes with about two hundred Chinookans aboard, most of them wearing armored vests and holding weapons. Lt. William Broughton, captain of the HMS Chatham, the tender vessel for George Vancouver's HMS Discovery, led the British force. Seeing his men clearly outnumbered, Broughton ordered the launch's swivel gun loaded and primed for discharge. He loaded his own musket and fired a ball in the water to forewarn and frighten the Chinook. While the only violence during the encounter came from the British mariners, the place-name Broughton affixed to the place—Point Warrior—represents his characterization of the Native canoe men. (oregonencyclopedia.org)The denouement was described by the ship's clerk, “[seeing] that our intentions were as peacable, as their own, they took off all their War Garments, and every man seem'd eager to dispose of his Bows and Arrows for old Buttons, Beads, etc.”The rock formation the lighthouse was built on is the reason Sauvie Island exists. During the last ice age, several cataclysmic flash flood events scoured out the Columbia Basin, originating from ice dam breaches in the area of modern day Missoula, MT. Looking up on the hillsides of that Montana college town one can still make out the terraced waterline pattern of a vast glacial lake. When all that water coursed through this section of river, it uncovered the Warrior Rock formation in the basin. The resistant grey limestone formation acted like a dam, holding back sediment deposits along its southwest axis. Thus, Sauvie Island is only about 10,000 years young, give or take a couple thousand years. Along the way I stopped to watch a family of Pileated Woodpeckers. Bald Eagles abound here.I completed this instrumental score fairly recently, so the discerning listener may note the sound palette bearing a resemblance to the recently launched Listening Spot series: instrument voices that function like string arrangements but were created from pedal steel guitar, dobro, and mellotron are used for the first time here. It strikes me that these are like sedimentary layers of sound deposited against the backbone of (mostly) Pianet electric piano.I tend to be quite slow on my walks, especially when there are so many interesting things to see and hear. As a result I came away with several hours of source audio. I decided to cut that down to just shy of an hour, and subsequently split that in two because I kept falling asleep when listening to the mixes at night. On the whole it's quite reflective. A good end-of-year listen, I think. So I'm keeping the entirety of Part 1 unrestricted, for all who may want to listen to it on this platform, or via their podcast app. Part two will be released next week. Warrior Rock Soundwalk Part 1 is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, Apple, Tidal, Amazon, YouTube…) tomorrow, Friday, December 13th. This is a public episode. The New Yorker recently featured rather impressive article called What Should a Queer Children's Book Do? In it K.T. Horning, "who recently retired as the director of the Cooperative Children's Book Center of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison" mentioned something in her discussion with writer Jessica Winter that today's book was a favorite for years by lesbian families before they had adequate books to turn to. Today we talk mosquitoes, this book, mosquitoes, how Canadian Geese are the worst, and ... mosquitoes. Enjoy! Here's the Reading Rainbow sequence of the reading of this book. What's interesting about this is how they chose to adapt the book. Due to its length, a straight reading would not have been ideal. So we were impressed how they incorporated live action into the mix. It also, if we might say so, kind of backs up what K.T. was saying about its subversive nature: https://youtu.be/TloBLRxH2Fw Kate Recommends: The Rehearsal: https://www.hbo.com/the-rehearsal Betsy Recommends: The 10th Anniversary Edition of Sailor Twain: https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250829443/sailortwainorthemermaidinthehudson10thanniversaryedition For the full Show Notes please visit: https://afuse8production.slj.com/2022/08/01/fuse-8-n-kate-three-days-on-a-river-in-a-red-canoe-by-vera-b-williams/

We also learn that Canadian Geese or Cobra Chickens as they are called can serve as security for a local Brewery. Cornell Romance… Just another boy sees girl, girl sees boy college romance with a “Hey let's get together” conversation in front of the Ithaca Beer Company. All My Ex's Live In Nashville… Daniel, Jake and Cody are here from Jackson, Tennessee to unwind… working six jobs between the three of them as landscapers, carpet installer, UPS and a server at Texas Roadhouse. They're not exactly sure where they'll sleep tonight but with a few ex-girlfriends living in Nashville, they have a few options. Flower of Scotland…. A short chat about soccer and Willy's old Scottish friend, Doug McMillian who played and coached professionally. Last week, the show lost the version of the Scottish National Anthem sung to us from the lovely ladies in the “Home to Scotland” segment of episode 14. In a meant to be moment, Martin, originally from the country gives us a fine rendition “Flower of Scotland”. Where's The Country Music?... Keri and Michelle from Roanoke, Virginia had a wonderful time in Nashville… even after a truck ran them off the road on their rental bikes! A trip to Skull's Rainbow Room in Printers Alley and the Black Rabbit on Third Avenue were their favorite spots. Lower Broadway however left them scratching their heads and questioning the lack of late night authentic country music. She's Pretty Though… She doesn't cook or clean but David can take care of that. She does however own two retail clothing stores in Indianapolis and Detroit. The owners of “Good Neighbor” enjoyed the Germantown Rolf and Daughters restaurant but weren't crazy about the Loveless Café Biscuits! Maybe that's a northern thing because we sure do love them here! Willy couldn't remember the name off the top of his head but the Southern Belle Biscuit company could help them out on their next visit!

Camping is one of my favourite pastimes, so much so I made a career of it the last 10 years of my life. What I learned during those years was that it's not everyone's cup of tea, or hot chocolate… It's not always like the pictures on Instagram made it out to be…But it's one of the best experiences or practices I've seen for kids and people in general to understand their role and impact on the natural world, and how a few days in the wilderness can drastically change your perspective on pretty much everything. It's a venue like no other that can cause us to slow down and appreciate the simple things: being warmed by a fire, sharing stories under starlight or learning a new skill together as a family or individually. This weeks episode includes stories from my camping adventures on the Island: midnight bear spray mishaps, my first fish, vicious Canadian Geese encounters in the dark and why we keep coming back for more, to experience more Nights under the Stars. Resources included: where to find great camping spots on Vancouver Island!

How to Use Science to Understand Love With Dr. Fred Nour

Born in Egypt, Dr. Nour left Cairo in 1977 after graduating in the top of his class at the Medical School of Cairo University. Looking for the freedom to study medical subjects of interest to him in the U.S., he made his way to London but got caught in three year immigration process. After many years of private Neurology practice in the Midwest and due only to an allergy to Canadian Geese, which flourish in large populations there, Dr. Nour moved to Southern California. Happily married with two daughters in college, he is now semi-retired. He is an accomplished painting artist, videographer, photographer and a graphic designer. He enjoys opera, sailing, tennis, bicycling, and learning about other cultures through travel, all while still enjoying helping patients with complex neurological disorders. Favorite Success Quote “With persistence, you can achieve anything your heart desires.” Key Points 1. “Love” is a Scientific Series of Processes that Occur in Four Distinct Phases 1. Mate Choice The first phase of love is mate choice. At it's most basic level, this is the process of meeting someone and (subconsciously) deciding that they are a good match for you and your potential offspring on a genetic level. This phase happens almost instantly. 2. Falling in Love The process that Hollywood and pop culture have used and abused. This is the phase in a relationship where the two individuals will feel massive attraction for one another and experience a heightened increase in certain pleasure chemicals. This phase will typically last 1-3 years. 3. Falling Out of Love  A necessary part of finding true love, the third phase of love is where you effectively experience the proverbial “come down” from the neurochemical high that you experienced during phase two. During this phase of the process, you will begin struggling in your relationship and find your partner less appealing than you did before.  This phase will typically last around a year. 4. True Love This is where the rubber meets the road. During the final stage of love, “True Love”, you have experienced falling out of love, made a conscious and informed decision that your current partner is right for you, and you now experience a release of a new set of pleasure chemicals that are slower forming but longer lasting, leading to the much desired “Happily ever after”. 2. Falling Out of Love is Essential to True Love Many people assume that if they are falling out of love with their partner it is a bad thing. However, they should actually get excited. Falling out of love is an essential, if not the most essential part of the four phases of true love. You see, the first two phases of love cause people to experience such an overwhelm of pleasure chemicals being released in the brain that they quite literally cannot see the other person for what they really are. Thus the phrase “Love is blind”. However, because your genes are hardwired to help ensure that you are able to survive and procreate with the highest levels of success possible, phase two begins. During this phase, your genes are working behind the scenes to help you determine whether the person you are with is truly the best match for you in the long run. If you do not have this phase, you cannot have true love. Read that again and write it down. Unless you fall out of love with your partner, you will scientifically never be able to experience true and lasting love.  This is not an easy reality to stomach, but the knowledge and foresight of what is to come will allow you to make informed decisions about your relationships and truly determine what is best for you in the future. 3. If You Do Not Fall Out of Love with Somebody You Cannot Fall in Love With Someone New Many men beat themselves up and feel battered down because they are unable to move on after a bad breakup or divorce. Gentlemen, I have good news for you. It is not your fault. Despite what we have been lead to believe by the pop culture surrounding masculinity, on a chemical and neurological level, you cannot just get over it whenever you experience a traumatizing separation. You see, whenever you are caught in the second phase of love and your partner ends the relationship (often because they reached the third phase and did not know how to handle it), you are still caught in love on a chemical level. Your brain will literally not allow you to move on until you have experienced the biological and neurological effects of falling out of love. So what does this mean for you? If your wife or girlfriend ends things while you are mid-phase 2 are you doomed to an eternity of lovelessness? No. Even though your brain and genes are working “against” you, it is possible to recover. Typically this will occur whenever you maintain an amiable (or nonamiable) relationship with your previous partner and allow yourself to naturally fall out of love with them. If they have been removed from your life completely, you will often need to seek professional help to truly recover and move on to your next love in a healthy way. 4. Love and Sex Are Not the Same Thing A common fallacy among the uninformed is that love and sex are the same things. They are not. While love and sex are complimentary in their nature, they serve two completely different purposes. Think about it this way. Sex is all about satiation. It's about achieving the goal of orgasm and there is a set amount of sex that any given person can handle before they are done. Love, on the other hand, does not have an inherent goal or “climax”. It is an ongoing process that can and should feel like a bottomless well. Have you ever heard anyone say “No thanks, I don't want any more love today. You can take your love and go give it to someone else.”? However, love makes sex more intense and emotional and sex makes loves more binding. Like a doctor and a nurse, they work together, but serve very separate roles. 5. Your Capacity for Love Depends on Your Genes And now, the big one. This particular point will be uncomfortable for many of you and might even make some of you angry. But like the famous scientist Neil DeGrasse Tyson said, “The great thing about science is that it is true whether you agree with it or not”. Your capacity for true love, connection, and monogamy are all highly dependent on your genes. There are some people who due to their genetic variations quite literally cannot experience true love. The chemicals are there, but the genetic wiring to receive the “true love” chemicals are not. This is a hard pill for many to swallow. The fact that monogamy, fidelity, and the quality of your relationships can actually have anything to do with your genes, let alone everything to do with them, is not something that most members of society understand and accept. And while this truth may not be comfortable, it is the truth and it's important that you remember this on your quest to find your own true love.
