In this episode, Caroline is talking to the amazing Joshua Okpala, who after training as an actor has become one of only four male intimacy coordinators in the country. Joshua has worked on several high profile films and TV shows choreographing nude, simulated sex and other types of intimate scenes, in a way that maintains the safety and dignity of the actors and cast. Caroline and Joshua discuss how the perception of what is acceptable in terms of what actors are expected to do during intimate scenes has shifted over time and Joshua provides a fascinating insight into how actors rights and personal feelings towards intimacy and nudity are managed on set. Joshua describes what drew him to this work and how he helps actors just beginning their journey understand that they have a choice in everything. KEY TAKEAWAYS People's perception of what Joshua does is affected by the fact most do not realise that actors are acting. Simulating intimacy rather than physically having sex. Actors want to deliver for the director, so there is a real danger of them over-reaching and doing something they end up bitterly regretting. Joshua works with actors to establish and maintain their boundaries. Intimacy coordinators work on many kinds of scenes, for example childbirth, or interactions between actors who are not related and have to show emotion, for example an adult hugging a child actor. Actors are waking up to the fact that they can say no without irreversibly damaging their careers. Don't be afraid to go for what you want, surround yourself with people who believe in you, and you will achieve it. Everyone suffers knocks. The trick is to keep going regardless, when you do that things fall into place for you. BEST MOMENTS ‘Because it's not real, and it's simulated, it needs to be choreographed. ´ ‘In terms of protecting people in the industry, intimacy coordination, isn't just about sex,' ‘Explore saying no to something and seeing how that feels.' ‘What is meant for us won´t pass us by… but we have to be open to that.' In a slow week for news around the NBA, we learned that the Kings had waived DJ Steward after just signing him, and that they finally signed KZ Okpala almost 2 months after we first learned about the signing. I interviewed University of Louisville Dental Student, Chidi Okpala. Chidi is native to Nigeria, but has lived in the United States for 10 years. Although just entering his second year of dental school, he has already made such a positive contribution to dentistry. As a member of the black community, he also represents a small demographic of the entire dental student body. In this interview, I learned so many amazing things about Chidi. First, he is a strong member of the United States Military and is using that resource to help fund his dental school journey. Next, Chidi is a man devoted to service. When coming onto the podcast, he expressed his sincere interest to help all pre-dental students. He accomplished all of that and more during this episode. Finally, Chidi is extremely inspirational. He shared an empowering message that I believe will make an enormously positive impact moving forward. He expressed his feelings regarding the realities of racial injustice. Furthermore, he helped raise the bar higher in suggesting the necessary steps we can take as a dental community to provide equal opportunity for anyone who wants to pursue dentistry.

National Coordinator of the Association of Nigerian Women Business Network, Nikiru Joy Okpala, talks about how she went from being a young lawyer interested in women’s issues to working in the field of business association management. She discusses the importance of economic empowerment for women and the barriers that make it difficult for women in Nigeria to succeed in business. One of those barriers is what she calls the “two-job function” where women have to juggle demands at work with demands at home, such as housekeeping and childcare. Okpala also discusses the role of women in Nigerian society, the urban/rural split in attitudes, and how education is helping expand what is possible for women in her country. Finally she talks about how her parents raised her to be an independent and successful woman, including the confidence she gained through debating current affairs with her banker father and his friends.
