On the fortieth episode of All the Film Things, I talked with professor/ author James Miller! James Miller is a liberal studies professor at the New School for Social Research in New York City. He wrote music reviews for Rolling Stone in the 70s and spent much of the 80s reviewing books and writing pop music criticism for Newsweek. Among Jim's many accomplishments, he has been a Guggenheim Fellow and his work continues to be published in magazines, peer- reviewed academic journals, and newspapers. Jim has written several books over the course of his decades- spanning career focused on various subject matters from philosophy (Examined Lives: From Socrates to Nietzsche) to politics (Can Democracy Work? A Short History of a Radical Idea, from Ancient Athens to Our World) to music. His book Flowers in the Dustbin: The Rise of Rock & Roll won the ASCAP- Deems Taylor Award for the best music book written of 1999.Jim's latest book, the first he's written focused on film, is titled The Passion of Pedro Almodóvar: A Self- Portrait in Seven Films and will be published through Columbia University Press on April 29. Through this book, Jim examines the work, and by extension self, of Almodóvar through his most personal films. This book will be available for purchase wherever books are sold so preorder your copy now on Barnes & Noble, Amazon, etc.! You'll definitely want to click this link to preorder the book on Barnes & Noble!: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-passion-of-pedro-almodovar-james-miller/1146504374;jsessionid=473B373D1171A12E15F5B951CC989AA7.prodny_store01-atgap07 If you're in the New York area, Jim will be sitting down with Robert Polito for an hour- long conversation on pub day about his book at the New School at 6 pm. Learn more about this event by clicking this link!: https://event.newschool.edu/booklunchjimmillerThis is Jim's first appearance on ATFT! I wouldn't have had the opportunity to interview him without two- time ATFT guest, film historian Max Alvarez presenting me with this opportiunity. I'm very grateful to him and Sarah C. Noell of Columbia University Press for helping bring this interview into fruition. Before reading Jim's book, I had seen three Almodóvar films and the latter two, Parallel Mothers (2021) and All About My Mother (1999), blew me away. For a few years now, I had been wanting to go through Almodóvar's work but his films are not so easy to come by. Reading Jim's brilliant, analytical book was the perfect opportunity to finally dive in, leaving me completely changed. Why aren't people talking about Almodóvar?! Quentin Tarantino was right when he said Almodóvar is largely underrated in the US. This episode was recorded on April 3, 2025. In this episode, Jim shares incredible stories from his career from gettign a private concert from Paul McCartney to inspiring a Jimi Hendrix song. We talk about some of cinema's greatest filmmakers, such as Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock, before discussing the work of Pedro Almodóvar for much of the episode. Filmmakers and film aficionados will especially enjoy this episode. Jim also talks about the impact of Michelangelo Antoninoni's Blow-up (1966) , Almodóvar's dynamic with muse Penélope Cruz, and inspiring Tom Hayden to write his memoir. All this and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things!P.S.) If you're listening on Spotify, share your thoughts on Pedro Almodóvar in the comments! The sun is setting in Columbus, Indiana while a renowned architect remains comatose in a local hospital. His estranged son from South Korea, Jin, comes to visit and soon meets a kindred spirit, Casey, whose passion for architecture creates a safe haven for Jin to reexamine his fractured and turbulent relationship with his father, while also providing Casey with a newfound outlet to explore the possibility of life outside of Columbus.   Kogonada’s 2017 directorial debut not only serves as a love-letter to architecture, but to the ties that we establish and familiarize ourselves with the landmarks, features, and connections that are found within any community. The most important part about these features is not the existence of them, but the room they create for memories, experiences, and a momentary sense of shared existence.   As always, thank you for listening and we hope you enjoy the discussion.   Where to watch: Amazon (Rent or Buy) YouTube (Rent or Buy) Kanopy (Select libraries)   Instagram: @lefilmpodcast   Twitter: @lefilmpod   Send us questions, feedback, and film recommendations at: lefilmpodcast@gmail.com   01:35 The Boys Season 2 02:54 Patrick’s Film Day Challenge 03:27 Hiroshima Mon Amour, Woman in the Dunes 03:40 Pedro Aldomovar’s All About My Mother, The Human Condition 03:56 A Short Film About Love 04:13 Evan’s Childhood, Streetwise 04:45 “Sacramento sucks” 05:42 HBO’s Barry 12:39 Attack on Titan 15:12 Evangelion, Hunter Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho 16:13 Toonami 17:08 Tik Tok 18:40 Columbus Review 46:28 Columbus Spoilers 1:11:05 Pros & Cons of Pure Auteurship 1:16:05 Quentin Tarantino & Sally Menke

Hi everyone! We’re back with another review from Jon-David, aka the Mafia Hairdresser, who is absolutely determined to pick up all our missing award nominees and winners from last year, including today’s underhyped film, PAIN AND GLORY, featuring a commanding performance from Antonio Banderas. We’re excited to get Jon-David’s take on the film. Don’t miss his recent reviews for MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL (Episode #713), THE CAVE (Episode #706), and RICHARD JEWELL (Episode #692). His promo will run before the review. Subscribe to stay current with the latest releases. Contribute at Patreon for exclusive content. Connect with us over social media to continue the conversation. Here we go! ///// > ///// Hello, this Jon-David aka Mafia Hairdresser, the writer and performer of the podcast The Mafia Hairdresser Chronicles, a campy crime comedy based on my time working for a Hollywood cocaine trafficking couple in the 1980s. Today’s movie is PAIN AND GLORY (2019), written and directed by internationally-acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, and stars Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, Leonardo Sbaraglia, and Asier Etxeandia. No spoilers. PAIN AND GLORY stars Antonio Banderas as writer/director Salvador Mallo. The film opens to Mallo’s memories of childhood, growing up poor with his mother, Jacinta (Penélope Cruz). As the story moves along, we see Salvador Mallo’s physical pain as an adult, which makes you think he might be nearing the end of his career of writer/director. Between the storylines of Antonio Banderas, as Mallo, rejecting the call to write and direct again (which is, figuratively, the breath of his life), and his romanticized flashbacks of Penélope Cruz raising him and molding him into the artist that he has become, you’ll begin to notice how the real director of the film, Almodóvar, uses music, light, color, and even his actors to tell his story. You see, in the films of Pedro Almodóvar, the story is not only enjoyable and straightforward or complex, he is also commenting on the subject of his stories. In this film, PAIN AND GLORY, he is commenting on the PAIN his main character has to endure when he feels his GLORY days as a film director are over. PAIN AND GLORY is rumored to be highly autobiographical and includes straight up tellings of Almodóvar’s religious education and his family expectations that he would become a priest. Antonio Banderas, as the film director, has to address his own ego and the way he has gone through life soaking up lovers, friends, colors, and experiences, but not fully experiencing them. Only writing them and filming them. I hope that when you see PAIN AND GLORY, you’re with a group of friends who likes to view film and talk about them afterwards. This film is actually not just autobiographical, a story, or a portrait. It is a statement from Pedro Almodóvar. He is showing you the brushes, his tools in which he paints his stories with. Although the main character is a film director who suffers for his art, you will see his tortured contemplation of his past films, brilliantly played by Banderas, who tries to maintain relationships, at arm’s length, to protect his own drug use. Almodóvar, the openly gay director, loves to tell the public what he thinks. He loves to show you his opinions in his films, and PAIN AND GLORYis his conversation directly with his film fans. He is telling us that, as close to the truth about his life and demons that he can show you, it will never be enough or real enough. But that the pursuit of showing you is the best anyone can do. Filmmaking, to him, and his main character, is like “chasing the dragon”, a term used by heroin users, also depicted in this film by Banderas, who suffers and strives to tell stories by making movies which only achieves him finite glory once his films are completed. Both the use of Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz in this film, along with his use of color, is another example of how Almodóvar uses his favorite actors, commenting that they are one of the many tools to tell a story. Personally, I would particularly to like know what people who have seen this film think of Almodóvar’s use of white, such as the cave-home dwelling his childhood main character grew up in, the stark white hospital scenes his grown up main character must endure, and what the use of whiteboards and the words “whitewash” mean in this film. Feel free to comment if you’re listening. Or chat us up on Twitter or Instagram. I have my own opinions. PAIN AND GLORY was nominated for a 92nd Best International Feature Film Academy Award. The writer director Pedro Almodóvar is already an Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Language Film in 2000 for ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER (1999), and Best Original Screenplay in 2003 for TALK TO HER (2002). Antonio Banderas won Best Actor at Cannes for his role in PAIN AND GLORY, and he was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. If you’re a fan of Pedro Almodóvar, you’ll see this film and become a bigger fan. And, if this is the first of his films you view, you will become a fan. Rotten Tomatoes: 97% (CERTIFIED FRESH) Metacritic: 87 (MUST SEE) One Movie Punch: 8.3/10 PAIN AND GLORY (2019), rated R, can be streamed on Amazon and iTunes. This is Jon-David, aka Mafia Hairdresser, the writer/performer of the Mafia Hairdresser Chronicles, my comedy crime podcast.

Writer/Director Pedro Almodóvar and Actor Antonio Banderas discuss their latest collaboration PAIN AND GLORY with moderator Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood). Recorded at the Landmark in Los Angeles on 10/26/19. In writer/director Pedro Almodóvar's Pain and Glory, Antonio Banderas plays Salvador Mallo, a film director in physical decline who reflects on his past as his present comes crashing down around him. Some of these reflections are in the flesh, others remembered: his childhood in the ‘60s, when he emigrated with his parents to a village in Valencia in search of prosperity; his first adult love in the Madrid of the ‘80s; the pain of the breakup of that love while it was still alive and intense; writing as the only therapy to forget the unforgettable; the early discovery of cinema; and the void, the infinite void created by the incapacity to keep on making films. Pain and Glory talks about creation, about the difficulty of separating it from one's own life and about the passions that give it meaning and hope. In recovering his past, Salvador finds the urgent need to recount it, and in that need he also finds his salvation. Also starring Penélope Cruz and Asier Etxeandia. From the director of Volver, Bad Education, Talk to Her and All About My Mother.

It's probably fair to say that Pedro Almodóvar's films seem to be made specifically for José. It's in every detail: the locations, eras, sexuality, ways of life, attitudes, class, love of cinema and countless other aspects of Almodóvar's ouevre speak to José on a deep, intimate level. He's watched every one of his films time and time again, and he considers Pain and Glory, which he has already seen twice and plans to see again, a masterpiece. Mike doesn't have anything like such a specific relationship to Almodóvar, and indeed has only seen one other of his films, 2016's Julieta, which he liked very much - and indeed he likes Pain and Glory just as much... though not quite as much as José. We discuss how Pain and Glory stands alone but might benefit from being seen in relation to Almodóvar's ouevre. Several of his regular collaborators appear, including Cecilia Roth, Antonio Banderas, Julieta Serrano and Penélope Cruz; this film, as with The Law of Desire, Broken Embraces and Bad Education, is about a filmmaker; it makes use of art as an unconscious but pointed visual layering and underlying theme; images of characters writing on typewriters or computers show up - this is a film about, amongst other things, writing. Mike brings up the way chance events are used to drive the plot forward and thinks about how they're contextualised; José praises how fluid Almodóvar's storytelling is here, effortlessly bringing together disparate timelines and plot strands. Is this autofiction, as the mother in the film accuses her filmmaker son of so often indulging in? José considers the appearance of Almodóvar's own mother in his previous films and how so many of his previous films are in fact about mothers (All About My Mother and Volver being the most obvious examples). We discuss the structure of the film, the movement from the relationship with an actor who's an addict to a previous relationship with an addict, through the performance of a confessional monologue titled Addiction, then a sexual awakening seen from a young boy's point of view. Representations of Spain in the 50s, memories of the past and a present setting fluidly intermingle. We also consider its themes of illness, ageing and loss, and how it's a film about cinematic expression, the revelation that half of the diegetic world is in fact a film within a film recontextualising half the story, similar to Bad Education but to different effect here. It's a film on which as soon as we finished, José regretted not saying more: The references to Lucrecia Martel's La niña santa, the clear allusion to Fellini's 8½, the use of Rosalía to sing the song by the river, the section on films that feature water such as Splendor in the Grass and Niagara. He's only scratched the surface of a great film. Recorded on 4th September 2019.
