Pat Dillon, Chief Financial Officer, Flock Freight joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy Podcast to discuss the current economic outlook and Flock's carpooling for freight model that unlocks value for shippers and carriers. The conversation begins with Pat sharing his insight on how as CFO, he is preparing Flock Freight for a potential recession in the United States which is currently being forecasted at 50% according to the Bloomberg United States Recession Probability Forecast. We are certainly cognizant of the broader macro environment and how that impacts our business. It certainly means that as consumer behavior changes or industrial production, the demand for freight transportation has an impact on that, so that certainly translates into our business. – Pat DillonWhile Flock Freight is still a growth company, the company is taking prudent measures to be prepared for the scenario that the United States economy falls into a recession. One of the company's economic advantages is that they operate an asset-light shared truckload platform that enables cost savings for their customers. Shared truckload would mean that we can take a 20 ft shipment from Customer A and a 25 ft shipment from Customer B and pool those together into a single truckload, so it never has to go on a hub and go through a warehouse. And you are getting point-to-point transportation. It's essentially carpooling for freight. – Pat DillonShipping using shared truckloads can reduce carbon emissions up to 40% due to higher utilization through fewer driven miles. As an important metric as this is, truck tonnage in the United States increased 7.4% in August 2022, year-over-year. The growth can be partially attributed to the catch-up effect as the global supply chain has begun to normalize. While the global supply chain has normalized today, the freight market will continue to fluctuate with the driver shortage and a potential slowdown in consumer spending. Creating opportunities for Flock that CNBC has taken notice as the company has climbed from #42 on the CNBC Disruptor 50 list in 2021 to #14 in 2022. With a potential recession on the horizon, Pat discusses what impact consolidation in the truck freight market will have on Flock Freight. Unlike a lot of other markets that might already be pretty consolidated, were further consolidation has signifiant pressure on margins, this is not that type of market. It's hyper fragmented and we do not see it having much of a day-to-day impact from that perspective on Flock Freight. – Pat DillonFrom a technology perspective, autonomous trucks are preparing to scale and the timing could not be better as there is a growing demand for freight and a growing driver shortage. Like a lot of things, there are big problems throughout the truck freight world and big problems are big opportunities. That's how you create new capacity when you are constrained on the number of drivers. – Pat DillonAutonomous trucks will compliment Flock Freight as they be able to provide autonomous shared truckload capacity. As new technologies come online such as hydrogen fuel-cell and electric heavy-duty trucks, Flock will look at ways to potential integrate those technologies into their platform.Wrapping up the conversation, Pat shares his thoughts on the future of freight. If you are a player in freight you will need to be able to have a more diversified approach in terms of the offerings you give to your customers. – Pat DillonFollow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Friday, September 30, 2022See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Steve and Jack discuss the data tsunami that many organizations are now facing and what steps finance executives can take to replace their historical, backward-looking, "batch mode" thinking with more proactive approaches that will allow finance teams to achieve more predictive outcomes. This episode's distinguished Planning Aces reveal the leadership mindsets and approaches now driving the shift away from batch mode. Featuring FP&A insights and commentary from CFO Claire Bramley of Teradata, CFO Sandra Rowland of Xylem, CFO Anna King of Mesh Payments and CFO Pat Dillon of Flock Freight.
When Flock Freight CFO Pat Dillon thinks back to his investment banking days at Morgan Stanley and considers the variety of CFOs from whom he once sat across, the banking veteran is struck by how at times the CFOs seem to have had little in common with one another. “What I saw was that their roles could be very different from one to the next,” explains Dillon, who notes that he came to view the CFO position as not one but many roles along a continuum across which that finance leaders migrate as their companies mature. “It wasn't like a split, where this person was an accounting CFO and that person was a strategic CFO, but really more about the mix of responsibilities and where the CFO was allocating their time,” recalls Dillon, who observes that it was during conversations with CFOs that he would seek to make the finance leaders aware of where along the continuum they would need to begin allocating more of their time. Reports Dillon: “It's no longer just about a good technology or about acquiring market share. You have to have predictable results. You have to understand that the role of the CFO and of the finance team is going to change and the requirements are only going to go up.“ Asked whether as a banker he had ever had to coax a finance leader to make finance team staff changes or beef up the company's FP&A team, Dillon remarks: “I think that you have to tread lightly when it comes to making a particular staff recommendation. As an advisor, we have exposure to senior members of the finance team—but not enough to make a judgment regarding operations day to day.” Still, Dillon says, “You make very clear what kind of output and results the finance team is now going to have to produce as the company is evolving. Whereas it used to be just kind of providing information, you now have to hit your results.” Undoubtedly, every banking relationship has its own unique challenges, and certain finance leaders are better listeners than others. Comments Dillon: “The best relationships that I had as an investment banker were where I could talk about that evolution and say, “Hey, I can't tell you how to run your organization, but I can help to preview where you're going to start confronting a higher set of requirements and where you could experience pain points with investors if you don't make certain changes.'” –Jack Sweeney

Hunting for money goes something like this once a somewhat final draft of our business plans is written. We reprioritize our monies and check with friends and family to check what financial resources might be available. We talk with bankers and look for loan opportunities, potential financial investment angels, and venture capital options. Credit card maximums are re-evaluated. We stretch our financial resources as far as possible and hunt for other resources to get our new products and services into the marketplace. Government resources are also available. Did you know $100B per year is invested in contracts and grants for research and development of new technologies? To demystify our government funding ecosystem, I turned to a 30+ year treasured innovator in Minnesota's science and technology, investment, and commercialization arena, Pat Dillon. Teagasc's Head of Animal & Grassland Research and Innovation Programme, Pat Dillon, joins Emma-Louise Coffey on this week's Dairy Edge podcast with a preview of the 2021 Moorepark Open Day event. It will take place over three days on Tuesday 14th, Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th September with the normal face-to-face format during the day and an additional virtual online forum each evening at 7pm. The open day is a ticketed event and those who wish to attend on the day must register online from 6th September. Reflecting on the last decade, Pat explains that the abolition of milk quotas has offered dairy farmers the opportunity to exploit technical efficiencies and as published in the National Farm Survey, dairy farm incomes have risen with average incomes of €74,000 in 2020. Looking to the next ten years, Pat says we will not see expansion anywhere near that of the last decade. Instead of an expansion focus, farmers will be focusing on further sustainability of their farm business, creating resilience in areas such as environmental practices and animal welfare. One year out of law school, he opened his own firm and has never looked back. He focuses his practice on agricultural law, criminal law, probate work, real estate issues, and tax law. On this episode, he shares some of his best stories. From a rapper who murdered his grandmother, to citing the Bible in legal briefs, to a con-man gypsy, Pat has seen it all! As I told him, he is the only ag lawyer I know to us "I've got to go to jail" as a reason to get off a conference call. He offers great advice to young attorneys looking to start their own practice and shares some wisdom that he's learned (some the hard way) over the years. When asked about what law he would like to see changed, Pat had two. First, he wishes that Iowa would go back to their ban on fireworks that was recently removed. Second, he thinks that the Rule Against Perpetuities is important and wishes that states that have done away with that would go back and reinstate the Rule. Finally, he sticks with his Irish roots and recommends the Irish Shanti in Elgin, Iowa. He recommends Guinness on tap and the Gunderburger--made with a POUND of locally-sourced Iowa beef.
