I'm talking with Nick Bergmann of Peace House Studio- Nick and his spouse Kate are creating children's clothes that can be bought back when outgrown and patched up and passed onto a new child with even more fun personality! (check out the cutie patootie top in the cover, and also in my Instagram promo!)We talk about the start of Peace House Studio, and the Three Pillars of sustainability: people, planet and profit, and what that means to them. We also discuss Organic vs. sustainability: Does organic always mean better or has it morphed into a marketing term? This is a deep subject, but one Peace House Studio cares deeply about and is working with; should they purchase organic cotton from India and have it travel across the world, or prioritize less travel and work with more local providers in this country? This is the organic conversation they're having. I loved this conversation with Nick, learning about the clothing startup processes and thought patterns, their trials and goals, and how transparent they are about sustainability. Last month the city of Minneapolis broke up one of the area's largest homeless camps. More than 100 people had been living in tents and other temporary structures at Camp Nenookaasi for months. The encampment is just one of many signs that an increasing number of people in Minnesota are living without stable shelter. People without housing are also riding Metro Transit buses and trains to find safety and warmth. They're sleeping in out-of-the-way corners of the skyways and living in their cars. The reasons for the rise in unsheltered people are complex, and government and social services are struggling to respond. Last week, a faith-based organization in Ramsey County announced it would start putting up people in area churches to help house some of the families who are overwhelming Hennepin County's emergency shelter program.MPR News host Angela Davis talks about why we're seeing a rise in visible homelessness and possible solutions.Guests: Monica Nilsson has operated street outreach, shelter and housing programs in the Twin Cities area for 30 years. She serves on the boards of Trellis, a housing developer and property manager of 5000 units throughout Minnesota, Mile in My Shoes, whose mission is collective transformation through running and reducing social isolation and Peace House.Sgt. Beverly Rodriguez oversees the Metro Transit Police Department's Homeless Action Team. She and three outreach officers patrol buses, trains and transit centers and connect people without shelter to emergency shelter, housing vouchers and other resources. Milton Manning is a U.S. Navy veteran who once experienced homelessness. He currently serves as a justice consultant for the state's Interagency Council on Homelessness and works at Peace House, a community center serving people sleeping outside and low-income adults in Minneapolis.Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS. Way too many people (especially women) are addicted to being busy. The thing is, this is how most of us were brought up. Do more, work harder, be more. Keep going no matter what. If you're busy “doing,” you'll be fine. Go to the gym, do side projects, and meet friends for happy hour. Keep stepping up, achieving, and doing ALL the things (plus more). And whatever you do … DON'T STOP! Remember that time you booked a “relaxing” vacation? The kind of vacation where you had nothing to do but lounge on the beach and relax. But 2 days in, the edgy uneasiness crept in. And by day 3 you were climbing the walls. Thank god for the piña coladas or you never would've survived! You learned your lesson. From that point on, even your vacations were jam-packed with things to do. Then, in 2020 the pandemic hit, and everything shut down. If you were lucky, you still had work. But everything else you used to do with your time was off the table. And you were forced to sit in the edgy uneasiness that comes with having nothing to do. Nobody knew what would come next. The rules and roadmap to what you're “supposed to do” were gone. And each person had a choice. You could wallow in the uneasiness, drink more, slide into depression, and let the anxiety overtake you. Or you could “let go” of the old way, reimagine a new better-for-you way, and take the steps to make it a reality. With or without a pandemic, this is how you create empowering, perfect-for-you careers and lives. And as a Career Empowerment Coach, it's why I love talking to people like Dora Fang. She created a whole new way of life for herself, living outside the boundaries of what we're “supposed to do.” She went from building strategic partnerships, creating new markets, and catalyzing growth at big companies to traveling full-time in a Winnebago Navion motorhome with her black lab, Tessa. Connect to Genea: Website: https://geneabarnes-elevate.com/ Book a call with Genea: https://bookacallwithgenea.com/ Free Career Guide: https://geneabarnes-elevate.com/career-guide-b/ Connect to Dora: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dora.the.vagabond/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dorafang/ Dora bio: Dora Fang has 20+ years of experience in building strategic partnerships, creating new markets, and catalyzing growth at companies such as eBay and Harley-Davidson. She started an outdoor adventure business in her 20s, before going to graduate school. She loves figuring out new businesses, industries, and ecosystems (she's worked in 6 so far, including medical devices, automotive, renewable energy, and e-commerce). Starting in 2020, she downshifted, fatFIRE'd, and is focused on enjoying adventure/nature and experiencing/learning new things. Dora's focus on helping women achieve self-sufficiency and self-confidence began freshman year in college while volunteering at the local battered women's shelter. Recently in San Francisco, she's helped with shelter operations and events for the Asian Women's Shelter, along with grocery delivery for the local food bank. She was also on the Asian Women's Shelter 25th Anniversary Steering Committee and a shelter volunteer/advocate. While living in Park City, Utah, she served on the Board of Peace House and as liaison to the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition. She also volunteered as a Victim Advocate for the Park City Police and Summit County Sheriff. She is often active with alumni groups, having served as Co-President of the Dartmouth Club of Utah, long-time member of Duke University's Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee, and Young Alumnae President for Chi Omega in Washington DC. She is also a leader within Burning Man crews in California and Utah, having served as a board member of Airpusher Collective and its inimitable airship and treasurer/petrol lead for Cosmiquarium Village. Dora earned her undergraduate degree at Duke University in Public Policy and an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. She is a California-certified Domestic Violence Counselor and fluent in Mandarin Chinese. In 2021, Dora moved out of San Francisco, CA into a Winnebago Navion motorhome to travel full-time with her sweet rescue pup, a 9(ish) year old black lab mix named Tessa.

Enjoy a great peace!!! Mooji (Anthony Paul Moo-Young) is a Jamaican spiritual teacher based in the UK and Portugal. He gives talks (satsang) and conducts retreats. Mooji lives in Portugal, at Monte Sahaja. Mooji's followers describe satsang as a “meeting in truth” where people come from all around the world, to ask questions about life, and seek peace and meaning. The BBC described Mooji's satsang as a “five hour spiritual question and answer session,” where devotees can ask how to find spiritual contentment. Comparing the satsang to a public therapy session, The Guardian describes Mooji as “one of those people who focuses in on you, making you feel like you really matter.” According to Outllok, Mooji has one simple philosophy, centred around the search for “I am”, not contingent on any religious or political influence. Mooji describes his teaching as the easy path to enlightenment. Let me know your experiences with this beautiful meditation. I am a Reiki Master, specialist in Reiki Distant Healing, which means I can send Reiki to everywhere in the world. Pastors of Embrace Church discuss the struggles of the Church in Afghanistan and Joy Faulkner (Women's Recovery Coordinator) discusses The Peace House
As Afghanistan falls again to the rule of the Taiban, we want to share a lesser-known story of hope - the work of the Kabul Peace House. During the 2000s in the mountains of central Afghanistan, soon after the US invasion, a remarkable but unlikely peace movement began. Led by a man called Insaan, they committed to a process of building peace between people. Over decades they created understanding and connection between ethnic groups and genders in ways that invasion and ideology never could. This story was written and recorded by our reporter Mark Isaacs on location in Afghanistan, and first released in 2020. Life in Afghanistan is far more complex than how it is portrayed in the daily Western news, in this episode we celebrate the Afghani community leaders who continue to work for a better place and real peace. Did you know that you can change the color of your hydrangeas? Neither did we! That's one of MANY fun & interesting things we learned today speaking with Maria Cermano; owner & operator of Blissful Blooms. From floral arrangements to neighborhood diversity, Maria's voice was a welcome addition to the show this morning. From growing up in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood to making Aurora her home, her journey is an inspiration. When we talk about chasing dreams and never giving up, what we're talking about is perseverance. It is that spirit of perseverance that can provide determination, even though our spirits may waver from time to time. Good Morning Aurora is here to listen. To share. To provide that space with which the individual can help another person through their shared experience. Blissful Blooms just had a successful ribbon cutting event so we're happy to have the opportunity to listen to all they have coming in the community. Oh, and check the water in your plants; if it's murky, that means there's bacteria in the water. So yeah, go ahead and change that water! Shout outs go to Gin Ingram Art & Vizo Arts for the fantastic artwork added to the Aurora Food Pantry. Peace of ART Camp is Thursday, Aug. 13th from 5 to 7 pm at the Peace House so be sure to attend that. Much love and respect to the IL House District 83 & 84 for all they do for our community. Illinois Department of Human Services Virtual Recruitment tomorrow at 1 pm (information will be posted) and shout out to the Aurora Public Library. Jalisco's on Lake Street, TBA Crew (them Bad Apples), Culture Stock & Aurora Public Art, Aurora Tap House & Blueberry BBQ, super shouts! Shouts go out to all the authors in Aurora: Devan The Artist (the Bear Book), Sarah Sommer, Tracy Duran & Xeli Xelz. You can check out the 'Local Authors' section on our website to see Devan's book and many more will be added as well. Shout out to Grant Milleren, McCarty Mills, PLS Solutions, Crystal House, Fox Valley Veterans Breakfast Club, Air Classics Museum in Sugar Grove & Alderman at Large Sherman Jenkins. Shout out to Alderwomen Smith & Hart-Burns, shout out to PreMil (Mac Appeal & Jay Money what up!), mad love and respect to all US Marines & United States Navy personnel. Extra special thank you to all of our listeners, supporters and subscribers. We appreciate you all and we have much more to come. Be blessed and motivated on this Tuesday. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/goodmorningaurora/support
What a great way to start the day, and what an awesome vibe with which to end our week. Today we got to sit down with Aurora's very own Gin Ingram for part 3 of our 'Women In Business' series. Gin is a valued community partner and friend of the show. From projects big and small to advocating for community involvement & growth; Gin has been a consistent force for good in Aurora. In our discussion we talk about family, dealing with change due to COVID19 and art in Aurora. We also talk about wings and burgers! The tastiest talk in Aurora this early in the morning! We also speak about faith, being good community members and new things to come! Shout-outs and highlights for the Peace House, Aurora Public Art & Mang-Kuk (asian fusion). Also, huge shout outs to the US Navy, the Ingram military family members and all veterans and service members worldwide. Also, Aurora Food Pantry, AMVETS and Aurora Public Library. Have a safe 4th of July weekend and we'll see you next week on Aurora's 1st morning show podcast. Power Your Story took an incredible field trip to visit the I Grow Chicago Peace House in the Englewood neighborhood. We got a tour, played basketball, took a kai chi do class (which you'll hear about in another episode), visited the greenhouse, met community members, ate lunch... it was a great day! Al, Malik, Justus and Keenan interviewed co-executive directors Quentin Mables and Erin Vogel about the organization's mission, why they personally got involved, what kinds of programs they offer and the importance of offering a safe space for people in what is traditionally known as a rough, under resourced community. The mission of I Grow Chicago is to grow Englewood from surviving to thriving through community connection, skill building, and opportunity. Powered by community and leading from the streets, all programs work to address the traumatic effects of violence and poverty. Here's an interview I've been dying to get - I didnt realize what a role model I was missing until I met Alonzo in college. My time with him helped develop me into who I am today. A true definition of a charismatic leader, Zo's story is amazing. We only got to spend a few minutes with him in a super-noisy Peace House (ironically at Peace Fest - an ievent being held particularly because of Zo) but i had to grab the mic and talk to him for a bit. From Wisconsin to Chicago direct to you, check out our talk with Alonzo. Looking for more from Zo? Check all social media platforms as well as finding him here - Listen Live on 1150AM WHBY or stream live at www.whby.com. I'm so proud. Can't wait!!!(Update: Here is the Podcast replay in case you missed it live; http://www.whby.com/…/ask-better-questions-red-cape-or-gre…/)www.alonzokelly.com

How can a home bring peace to a neighborhood? To date, we have seen that this is a God idea for us to care about this, pray for it, and work toward it. We find peace in our homes, by forgiving each other. From there we may build relationships in the neighborhood, with love by listening. Now […]

Returning with a new season, this episode highlights the story of Sr Rose Tillemans, CSJ and her journey towards the development of Peace House Community. “This the gift to recognize the gifts that you prize And to know you yourself are a gift on the rise If people look sideways at you're all about Turn, turn, turn and shout, shout shout. God knows the GIFT that you IS Even on the days when you don't pass the quiz And know you are a star midst the galaxies above Or even a meteor proclaiming your love This the gift to rebel, this the gift to dissent When things aren't going the way they should've went And if you're rocking a boat or a fort Rejoice in your cause or any support. Speak out the truth in your heart Be glad for this gift even tho' you fall apart Dance when you win and dance when you lose Even if you must buy a new pair of shoes.” -A poem by Sr Rose Welch Tillemans Sr Rose Tillemans: http://peacehousecommunity.org/pdf/PHC%20WEBSITE%20FOUNDER%20PDF.pdf Peace House Community: http://www.peacehousecommunity.org/about.php
E-Money, Vogs, The Vogelmonster...no matter the nickname I give her my homie Erin Vogel keeps doing amazing things and earning new nicknames in the process. The Co-Executive Director of the non-profit I Grow Chicago Erin has made her mark in the Englewood community by helping change lives and the narrative of how one historically troubled neighborhood is looked upon. We chop it up with Erin at the actuial Peace House, and if you know anything about the peace House is you know there's never a dull moment, which is why the interview ends abruptly after about 20 mins. Couldve gone into the vault, however this turns into a very cool 20 ins where we learn so much and hopefully inspires a few people. Biggie playing in the background (we miss you Biggie, dont sue us, Diddy!). If you liked this quick, cut-off interview well have no fear, we'll definitely be hearing more from Erin and the rest of the I Grow team as well.
