Ugly American Werewolf in London: Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow

By the mid-70s, Jeff Beck was a bit of an enigma. He started out as a blues player in The Yardbirds replacing Eric Clapton and sharing the stage for few shows with Jimmy Page. Then he formed The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart as his lead singer and Ronnie Wood on the bass where the band tried to be more commercial. He created one of the great power trios with Beck, Bogert and Appice and while they were a strong live draw, they didn't get a lot of radio play. By 1975 Jeff, who was never one to stay still musically, decided to put together his first Jeff Beck album. Instead of blues and hard rock based riffs he melded with Max Middleton on piano who helped write the songs, Phil Chen on the bass, and Richard Bailey to create some jazzy jams that allowed everyone to shine. However, he also had help from heavyweights George Martin, who produced the album as he did The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder, who wrote a couple of songs for Jeff including the sublime Cause We Ended As Lovers. It may have originally been a bittersweet song for his wife Syreeta but Jeff makes it his own by laying emotional guitar over over the mellow notes. And Jeff shows off his jazzy abilities on songs like Constipated Duck (great title), space funk on AIR blower, frenetic playing on Scatterbrain and one of his real signatures, Freeway Jam. Many of these became live staples of his for decades and the album not only went to #4 in the US but sold platinum despite the fact that there are no vocals on the album. With room to explore, Jeff led this group on a fun, experimental and tight journey to create a guitar masterpiece which is more jazz than rock. Ep 178: Ludwig von Mises vs. A Christian Scholar, Round 3 (N.T. Wright)

In the long-awaited third installment of my Ludwig von Mises vs. a Christian Scholar series, I take on the big dog himself, N.T. Wright. Wright is the world's most famous New Testament scholar and theologian and is known for his pioneering work on the ‘New Perspective' on Paul, Paul and empire, and the historical Jesus. I explain how his own theology of empire and the church helped lead me to libertarianism, but how Wright himself often fails to see the modern consequences of his own theological positions. I look at a passage from his book History and Eschatology where he writes a veiled critique of capitalism, and counter it with a passage from Mises's Human Action that explains how free market capitalism actually works. This demonstrates that on a definitional level Wright doesn't understand free markets and attributes to ‘capitalism' economic problems that are directly caused by government intervention in the market. I then play clips from an interview Wright had with entrepreneur Phil Chen, showing that Wright fails to understand monetary theory, central banking, economic regulation, and markets. I counter his points with selected readings from the works of Mises, demonstrating how an understanding of the Austrian school of economics would better help Wright better apply his theology to modern social and economic problems.  Media Referenced:Round 1: Mises vs. Gorman: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ludwig-von-mises-vs-christian-scholar-round-1-michael-gorman/Round 2: Mises vs. Smith: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ludwig-von-mises-vs-christian-scholar-round-2-james-k-a-smith/‘Inflation' defined: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-66-the-high-cost-of-inflation-and-the-war-in-ukraine/Bitcoin explained: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/bitcoin-and-the-future-of-currency-with-adam-obrien/Money, the Fed, and Christianity: https://libertarianchristians.com/episode/ep-99-money-the-federal-reserve-and-christian-ethics-with-jordan-bush/Human Action: https://mises.org/podcasts/human-action-treatise-economicsHistory and Eschatology: https://a.co/d/8tHavlmMoney and Inflation: https://mises.org/library/book/ludwig-von-mises-money-and-inflationPhil Chen Interview Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFR7J2-N6JM&list=PPSVPhil Chen Interview Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2W0Jo5QAaU&list=PLQhBTXNmfWOyX5l7di2JV8ghJh4SdwcUF&index=8 The Protestant Libertarian Podcast is a project of the Libertarian Christian Institute and a part of the Christians For Liberty Network. In 1987, 17% of people had an unfavorable view of the Supreme Court. Now, in 2024, 51% of people say the same thing. That's a 200% increase in just 37 years, according to analysis of Pew Research data. So why have American's opinions of the court's declined so significantly? In this episode, new co-host Jordyn Reiland chats with Assistant Professor Phil Chen about how trust and legitimacy in the Supreme Court and federal judiciary more broadly is contingent on more than just descriptive representation—otherwise known as demographic diversity. Americans also want to see substantive representation, effectively whether your specific policy interests are being met. Phil Chen is an assistant professor of political science in the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. His research delves into race, ethnicity, gender, and partisanship in political psychology, as well as political communication and how voters interpret and react to appeals from politicians and the media. Chen teaches classes on campaigns and elections, race and ethnicity, political polarization, media and politics, political psychology, and political participation.More information:Amy Coney Barrett is Not Enough: How Descriptive and Substantive Representation Shape Trust and Legitimacy of the Federal Courts by Phil Chen and Amanda SavageFavorable views of Supreme Court remain near historic lowMost of Biden's appointed judges to date are women, racial or ethnic minorities – a first for any president

"Foot Loose & Fancy Free" was Rod Stewart's eighth studio album. It continued Rod's 70's solo artist success. Rod's legendary vocals were in prime condition and he had tremendous band behind him. He had three guitarists, Gary Grainger, Jim Cregan and Billy Peek. His bassist was renowned session player Phil Chen. The keyboard player was Jon Barlow Jarvis and on the drums was the legendary Carmine Appice. This band could match up with any other band in the 1970's. The album featured three huge hits that have been in rotation on rock radio since the album was released, including "Hot Legs," "You're In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" and "I Was Only Joking." Those three songs even had videos which were starting to become fashionable. The album also includes typical Rod Stewart ballads, some funk, some psychedelic rock, prog rock and more. The album made it to Number 2 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 3X platinum. The album was produced by legendary Tom Dowd and was considered the last of his rocking 70's albums. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Zeus' pick. So tune in to the documentary type of breakdown of the "Hot Legs" video and to see if the guys man crush on Rod is stronger than theirs on Michael Hutchence of INXS! Richard Bailey Drummer for some of the greatest names in music Guyanese-born Richard Bailey started his drumming career in Trinidad at the age of nine, sitting in on percussion, drums and even bass guitar with his elder brother Robert's ( Robert Bailey, keyboard -OSIBISA) group, the top band in Trinidad and Tobago at that time. He also accompanied Robert, who played Hammond organ, to perform TV/Live concerts as a duo. At twelve years old Richard's family moved to London where Richard went to school, sitting in on occasional gigs in his spare time, but while at school Richard also excelled in athletics, becoming Southern England school champ at 100 metres. His father, Emmanuel McDonald Bailey had held the world record for the 100 yards and won an Olympic Bronze for England. Even so, Richard decided to leave school at fifteen to play drums, leaving behind athletics. At sixteen Richard was recording and touring the UK and USA with Johnny Nash and the great Bob Marley. By eighteen he had recorded Jeff Beck's biggest selling album “Blow By Blow” (1975, Epic/Sony Japan) to critical acclaim and appeared on the film soundtrack “Tommy” alongside Pete Townsend, Phil Chen and Roger Daltrey. The next decade saw many recordings and tours varying in style from Rock to Reggae to Jazz to Pop and Latin including two world tours with Billy Ocean and Basia. Richard occupied the drum seat with the the excellent British acid jazz/rock/soul fusion collective “INCOGNITO” for the past 15 years. More recently he has been an integral part of Steve Winwood's two important return-to-form recordings, 2003's About Time (Wincraft) and last year's Nine Lives (Columbia). Richard Bailey's versatility and unique style has made him a first-call kit-man for over four decades  keeping him in high demand. https://www.richardbaileydrums.com/ To support the podcast and get access to features about guitar playing and song writing visit https://www.patreon.com/vichyland and also news for all the creative music that we do at Bluescamp UK and France visit www.bluescampuk.co.uk For details of the Ikaro music charity visit www.ikaromusic.com Big thanks to Josh Ferrara for the music

Today we're recording at the KKBOX studio in Taiwan, big thanks to the Firstory team for setting this up. We have joining us Phil Chen, founding partner of Race Capital and product executive at HTC, whom I can only describe as a basketball loving, deep tech investing, future building nerd of a modern Renaissance man. While at HTC, Phil led product management for the first ever Android phone, founded Vive VR, and launched the world's first blockchain phone (HTC Exodus). At the same time, Phil ran HTC's corporate development efforts, where he invested in KKBOX and SoundHound, and also led HTC's acquisition of Beats Electronics, which was eventually acquired by Apple. As a VC and advisor at Horizon Ventures (Li Ka-Shing's venture fund), Phil managed their deep tech investments, where he served as a board director for over fifteen companies globally including Improbable, Soul Machines, Kneron, Scopely, Sentient, Fano Labs, Amper and 88Rising. On today's podcast, Phil shares the insider scoop on HTC's incredible rise and eventual decline that hasn't been heard before, including an early opportunity to invest in Xiaomi when it was worth only $150m. Phil describes his investments in VR, especially as it pertains to health and how VR hacks the visual cortex to reduce pain, improve mental wellness, etc. Phil speaks to the potential of a blockchain powered future, as well the opportunity for Taiwanese start-ups to build world-class companies, especially as so many successful entrepreneurs return from Silicon Valley during the COVID era. Lots to cover on today's podcast, enjoy! Link to write-up: https://www.theharbingerchina.com/blog/phil-chen-htc-vr-blockchain-1

Facebook’s Libra Currency Worries Banking World And G7

You may have read that Facebook is to launch a cryptocurrency, which is already creating a stir among world central bankers and G7 leaders. This is not just a remittance service sending money via a smartphone, but a new currency. However, some cryptocurrency purists could argue that Facebook’s new digital coin, Libra, is not a true cryptocurrency, although they admit that it could bring digital money into the mainstream. Critics claim the plans for Libra, backed by a consortium of 28 groups including Uber, Spotify, Visa and Mastercard, is not a genuinely decentralised digital currency. I’m not a crypto expert or even a fan of so-called currencies like Bitcoin. The price of bitcoin, which has been volatile over the past 12 months and passed $9,000 at the weekend for the first time in more than a year, has been flat since the announcement. Other major cryptocurrencies were also unmoved or only slightly down on the news. The new currency system will allow users to convert US dollars and other international currencies into Libra, which will facilitate rapid money transfers and online transactions with almost no transaction fees. Which begs the question, if there are no transaction fees why are these companies investing millions into this project? Facebook, which is leading the project, said Libra will be especially valuable to the 1.7bn people worldwide without bank accounts, who will be able to carry out payments via their phones. Phil Chen, decentralised chief officer at phonemaker HTC’s blockchain-driven Exodus project, told the FT. “This project is the antithesis of bitcoin and is another step towards total control of data and users,” Whilst central bankers, like the governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney, have given the currency a lukewarm welcome, I’m sure Facebook and its backers have already thought through the potential challenges that lie ahead, not least money laundering regulation. Within Facebook — where engineers and product managers are more familiar with optimising advertising algorithms or simplifying photo sharing — creating a new currency was seen as a daunting challenge. “I’ve been doing this for more than a year, like 20 hours a day, and I’m still wrapping my head around it,” said Kevin Weil, who moved from Instagram to become Facebook’s head of blockchain product in June 2018. Libra was “unlike anything I’ve ever worked on before”, he added in an interview last week at the San Francisco Mint. “The technology is basically brand new, and is evolving really quickly. No one has any experience with a global currency before. Any direction you look, it’s new — and that’s exciting.” Libra could open up opportunities for small online businesses to lower the cost of transactions, as well ease the process of selling online on Instagram and Facebook. The news must have sent shivers through the banking and money transfer community. This will shake up the banks and the likes of Western Union, which takes a large chunk out of overseas workers remittances. They are all crying 'foul' about regulations and money laundering when it's the banks who have been fined for laundering! Apple Pay is not mentioned? This will be another step towards a cashless society, a one world currency and less control of our money and privacy. Facebook has 2.7 billion active monthly users, and it knows a lot about us. It will know a lot more about us once we start using Libra, but has promised to keep this information separate from the social media business. Blockchain phones are coming, that much is certain. The Sirin Labs Finney and the HTC Exodus are both expected by the end of the year, each with its own, sometimes vaguely defined sense of what exactly that term means. HTC's Phil Chen, who spearheaded Exodus development, has at least started to fill in the blanks of how the Exodus will pull off its most important trick: keeping your cryptocurrency safe. The Exodus has loftier ambitions than mere storage, of course.
