It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of a guitar hero giant who also happened to be an awesome singer and songwriter: John Sykes. He was a guitarist deserving of the title guitar god who rarely got mentioned in the same circles as the Satches, Vais, Rhodes, and Van Halens. Most known for his brief stint in Thin Lizzy at the end of their career and as a brief member of Whitesnake. He should have been a household for playing on the Whitesnake 87 album that sold 25M records worldwide, but he was fired before it came out. Kevin's a huge fan of Blue Murder, so we will focus on that band and some of the lesser-known projects he was involved in while also paying homage to his mainstream successes. New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Rest In Peace John. Your pure musicality and amazing songs will live forever in our hearts!Songs this week include:Blue Murder – “We All Fall Down” from Nothin' But Trouble (1993)Streetfighter – “She's No Angel” from Lightnin' To The Nations: NWOBHM 25th Anniversary Collection (2005)Tygers Of Pan Tang – “Blackjack” from Spellbound (1981)John Sykes – “Pride And Joy” from Crossfire: A Salute To Stevie Ray (1996)Derek Sherinian – “God Of War” from Mythology (2004)Thin Lizzy – “Cowboy Song” from One Night Only (2000)John Sykes – “Cautionary Warning” from 20th Century (1997)Blue Murder – “Still Of The Night” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Blue Murder – “Jelly Roll” from Screaming Blue Murder: Dedicated To Phil Lynott (1994)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/
Rockshow episode 210 The Story of Phil Lynott and Thin LizzyPhilip Parris Lynott, born on August 20, 1949, in West Bromwich, England, and raised in Dublin, Ireland, was the charismatic frontman, bassist, and primary songwriter of Thin Lizzy—one of the most influential rock bands of the 1970s and early 80s. Known for his poetic lyrics, distinctive voice, and commanding stage presence, Lynott played a crucial role in shaping the band's signature sound, blending hard rock with Celtic influences and storytelling. The Formation of Thin Lizzy (1969-1972)Lynott formed Thin Lizzy in Dublin in 1969, along with drummer Brian Downey, guitarist Eric Bell, and organist Eric Wrixon (who left shortly after). The band was named after a character from a comic book (The Dandy's “Tin Lizzie”). They signed with Decca Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1971, but mainstream success eluded them at first.Their breakthrough came in 1972 with their reworking of the traditional Irish folk song “Whiskey in the Jar,” which became a major hit in Ireland and the UK. However, after their next few albums underperformed, Eric Bell left the band, leading to a major lineup change that would define their classic sound. The Classic Thin Lizzy Lineup (1974-1980)After Bell's departure, Thin Lizzy transitioned into a twin-guitar rock powerhouse. Lynott recruited Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson, forming the band's legendary dual-guitar attack. Their first major success in this era came with “The Boys Are Back in Town” (1976) from the Jailbreak album, which remains their most famous song.Notable Albums & Songs:•Jailbreak (1976) – “The Boys Are Back in Town,” “Jailbreak” •Johnny the Fox (1976) – “Don't Believe a Word” •Bad Reputation (1977) – “Dancing in the Moonlight,” “Bad Reputation”•Live and Dangerous (1978) – Regarded as one of the greatest live rock albums of all time•Black Rose: A Rock Legend (1979) – “Do Anything You Want To,” “Waiting for an Alibi,” “Black Rose”Thin Lizzy became known for their explosive live performances, poetic lyrics, and blending of hard rock with Irish storytelling. However, internal tensions, particularly with Brian Robertson's unreliability, led to lineup changes. The Later Years & Decline (1980-1983)Thin Lizzy disbanded in 1983 after a farewell tour, marking the end of an era.Phil Lynott's Solo Career & Tragic DeathAfter Thin Lizzy, Lynott pursued a solo career, releasing two albums:•Solo in Soho (1980) – “King's Call,” “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts”•The Philip Lynott Album (1982) He also collaborated with musicians like Gary Moore (“Out in the Fields”) and worked on various projects. However, his drug addiction worsened, and in late 1985, he collapsed due to complications from heroin and alcohol abuse.Phil Lynott passed away on January 4, 1986, at the age of 36.Thin Lizzy's LegacyDespite Lynott's passing, Thin Lizzy's influence remains strong. Various members have carried on the band's music, with Scott Gorham leading tribute tours. Lynott's lyrical storytelling, stage presence, and fusion of Celtic themes with hard rock inspired countless musicians, including Metallica, Iron Maiden, and U2.Today, Lynott is celebrated as Ireland's first great rock star, with statues, documentaries, and tributes keeping his legacy alive.Essential Listening for New Fans: Phil Lynott remains one of rock's most beloved and tragic figures—a poet, a rocker, and a legend whose music still resonates today.http://www.thinlizzy.org/phil.htmlhttps://youtube.com/@thinlizzyofficial?si=HtxqVIFF3_AuRiWrhttps://www.thinlizzyofficial.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/15serR1qV2/?mibextid=wwXIfrhttps://x.com/thinlizzy_?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://www.instagram.com/thinlizzy?igsh=bjE3aXRvdnhnMDVh#ThinLizzy #PhilLynott #RockLegends #ClassicRock #IrishRock #TheBoysAreBackInTown #Jailbreak #LiveAndDangerous #70sRock #HardRock #WhiskeyInTheJar #BlackRose #DancingInTheMoonlight #RockNRoll #LegendaryBands

Lord of the Les Paul and Mariscal of the Marshall Stack, Scott Gorham shot to worldwide prominence with the legendary rock band Thin Lizzy. He created what would become known subsequently as “The Twin Guitar Attack” - a harmonised lead guitar style developed alongside players such as Brian Robertson and Gary Moore, driving home the larger-than-life persona of frontman and bass player Phil Lynott. At the height of their powers, Thin Lizzy were a world-straddling colossus of a band - hard rocking for sure but real songwriters, too. And just incredible live! I caught up with Scott at what used to be Olympic Recording Studios in Barnes (Led Zeppelin, Queen, Lizzy ... they all made records there). It's now a cinema complex and restaurant with a private members club hidden away for those in the know. We talk about Scott's early exposure to the guitar and live music, his relocation from California to London, and an audition for Thin Lizzy which I suspect would have broken most of us. We discuss the iconography of Gibson's Les Paul model. In particular, the heavily supervised shopping trip for the mini-humbucker Deluxe model with which Scott has become synonymous. We go deep on the semantics of scratch plates, amplifiers the size of a family SUV, and what happens when your guitar gets famous without you. But it wasn't all gold tops, champagne and caviar, life in Thin Lizzy could be tempestuous and Scott is candid about the darker times including how golf helped with the pain of recovery from addiction. Hey, if it works… right? We talk in depth about Scott's secret double life as a visual artist, discuss two of the rarest materials in the universe and share a fond hope that benevolent extraterrestrial life might just have our backs after all. Now, what no-one knew - because he had kept it a secret from the world - is that Scott Gorham is an extremely skilled artist and some of his extraordinarily detailed pencil drawings from the Thin Lizzy period have been rediscovered and are now available as fine art prints. He's had his first gallery showing and it's all going rather well. You can see more here: https://scottgorhamworld.com Take a look at Pain, Curiosity and Apocalypse, three works that we discuss in detail. Be advised - the language gets a little fruity as we progress. It doesn't get too awful, but listeners with delicate sensibilities or the under-fives should proceed with caution. Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark a sorti un nouveau single, "Kleptocracy". Bass legend, Billy Sheehan is up first. We went back throughout his entire career, to his Talas years, joining David Lee Roth, to releasing a record last year. We talk about the late Phil Nero and his passing. "He was giving it 200%" Billy said about his vocal performance on the last album. Winery Dogs 3 is out now. Billy talks about playing with Richie Kotzen and Mike Portnoy. Apparently, Richie stopped using a pick while playing his guitar. That's a crazy story. What did he do during the lockdown? "I did tracks for people." He did over 600 tracks for bands and musicians from all over, and all styles of music. He told some amusing stories about doing that for people. He gives an update on what's going on with Mr. Big. He said they have a drummer ready to go, but that person is currently doing other things, so they can't announce who it is just yet. Billy goes home every year for the Musicians of Buffalo Annual Christmas Concert. He told me what inspired that and what a joy it is to play. We talked about a collaboration he did with an Indonesian band called Dewa 19. Tyler Connolly from Theory of a Deadman gave me a great question - who's the best guitar player he's played with? Billy has shared the stage with legendary players. His answer? "That would be tough" On his time in David Lee Roth's band "We had a riot...what an adventure!" See Billy with the Winery Dogs at the Token Lounge on March 11th. Next, I had the chance to talk with Ricky Warwick from Black Star Riders about a lot of stuff. Their new album is called the Wrong Side Of Paradise. He tells me about the album and explained the album cover art. He laughed and said “We had a great band picture, but we didn't know who was going to be in the band”. He talks about Scott Gorham's semi-retirement, Christian Martuci leaving the band and going back to play with Corey Taylor, and new members of the band. He's been doing in-stores over in Europe. He tells me about that and how much he liked doing them. “For me, I love to meet people”. He talks about becoming sober. He said he doesn't want to harp, but “It works for me”. “I can't say enough good things about them” talking about the new record label, Earache records. He said it was time for a change for the new album. He also talks about the killer tour they'll be doing in Europe. Of course, I had to text my friend, producer Jay Ruston, to send me a question. He just sent me this….ask him about "too many wires". Pretty funny! -Meltdown- https://wrif.com/shows/meltdown-on-wrif/ https://wrif.com/podcasts/track-x-track/ https://wrif.com/podcasts/talkin-rock-with-meltdown/

Episode 4 of the brand new Season 6 kicked off at precisely 19h00 on 26 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio. First up was a band who are no strangers to TSORR, Great White with ‘Never Trust a Pretty Face'. We had a nice up-tempo start cycling through Motor Sister, and Accept and then took a huge step back into the past with the ever-fresh sound of Creedence Clearwater Revival and ‘Green River', from there we went to Aussie for some Cold Chisel and a track called ‘Misfits'. We stayed there for Airborne and moved on to Tesla via Halestorm and a track called Legendary which of course she is. Lzzy Hale is the real deal. The Tesla track was ‘Gettin' Better' off the RePlugged Live album which is amazing. Tesla fans check it out. Black Star Riders (without Scott Gorham) released a new album last week called Wrong Side of Paradise, we listened to the title track. It's one of those that fall into the ‘Songs that could be about South Africa' category. Talking of that we also had ‘Losing More Than You Ever Had' (Accept) and ‘Stand & Deliver (Airbourne) as further examples. Def Leppard's colossal breakthrough album Pyromania turned 40 this week and KISS main man Paul Stanley turned 70. We celebrated with Rock, Rock (Till You Drop), and Love Gun' respectively. 'Peace is Free' from Black stone Cherry calmed things down a bit, and we stayed calm with ‘Soul' from 12th Avenue and wished Mark Haze, vocalist extraordinaire who formed 12th Avenue, a speedy recovery from the back-op he had this week. Linkin Park with ‘One Step Closer' sounded great and then we got to Megadeth with 'Life in Hell' off their latest album and a brand new track from Metallica called ‘Screaming Suicide'. TSORR predicts that 2023 will be Metallica's year. They seem to have hit a sweet spot and are feeling the love and appreciation of the people of Planet Earth. The South African stuff was, as we say in these parts, 'poes heavy'. Kill Frenzy out of Cape Town and Diverted Disorder from the Vaal gave us our weekly dose of Linda take a walk music. Check out both bands if you dig the heavier stuff. This week's Immortal track came from Led Zep with 'Since I've Been Loving You' off Led Zeppelin III. We had UK Punk courtesy of Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, and Stiff Little Fingers which led us to U2 with 'I Will Follow'. Prepare to hear a lot of U2, I am busy with Bono's book Surrender, it is a great read. Even if you are not a fan it is so rich with descriptions of the times, places, and characters of the times that it is well worth delving into. the Audible version brings it all to life. We ended with Slayer and another song that could be about South Africa called 'Seasons In the Abyss'. Artists featured: Great White, Jorn, Motor Sister, Accept, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cold Chisel, Airbourne, Ratt, Halestorm, Nickelback, Tesla, John Mellencamp, Black Star Riders. Phil X & the Drills, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, KISS, The Black Crowes, White Zombie, Emigrate, Glenn Hughes, Black Stone Cherry, 12th Avenue, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, The Stranglers, U2, Me and That Man, Kill Frenzy, Diverted Disorder, Piet Botha, Windowpane, Slayer. Scott Gorham from Thin Lizzy joined Rosie to chat about the movie Phil Lynott: Songs For While I'm Away. Reminiscing on his time In Australia, and revealing his FAVOURITE city. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott, and his friend, and cohort, Gary Moore worked together from their youth, on and off. They recorded in a band called Skid Row, and would associate through the decades, until Phil's death in 1986 at age 36. That included stints in Thin Lizzy, the band Phil led, which we explore this week.Their songs had their own legend, and broke them worldwide, but it was the live shows that sealed their reputation, badass as it was. Markus and Ray try to detail as much as possible about the formation and evolution of Thin Lizzy, and the varied factors that worked for, and against, the band.Hope you find some good stuff in this one. Episode 45 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 10 Nov 2022. The show kicked off with ACDC and a track off Let There Be Rock called ‘Overdose'. From there we continued with Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, and White Zombie. We went into the ‘00s and cranked the Nu Metal with Drowning Pool and the title track off the Sinner album, the one that gave the world 'Bodies' and 'Broken Home' off Papa Roach's Infest album. Strangely enough, we went from that into some mellow blues, courtesy of Popa Chubby and ZZ Top with Trouble and Blue Jean Blues respectively. It was the Papa to Popa connection that did it. From the Blues, we checked out Iron Maiden and another track off Power Slave called ‘Back In the Village'. Herman Frank, ex of Accept got a look-in with a track off his latest album Two For a Lie. We stayed in Germany for some Rammstein and a bit later 'Blackout' from Scorpions, another song written about Eskom. A highlight of the show was the back-to-back pairing of Tony Martin and Joe Lynn Turner, two vocalists who have played in the best bands in the world and have both released solo alums in the last 12 months. Joe Lynn Turner has Peter Tägtgren producing and doing the guitar work and it is one hell of a combination. We had some more Nu Metal courtesy of Limp Bizkit and then used Courtney Love's band Hole, with a track called 'Rock Star' to lead us into a quick farewell and RIP to Nazareth's Dan McCafferty who passed away this week. As explained on the show Nazareth are a very special band to those of us growing up in the '70s and '80s and we thanked Dan for writing and performing some awesome classic songs. We took in 'When Your Love is Gone' by Assie legend Jimmy Barnes and then spent nearly nine minutes on the Thin Lizzy classic ‘Still In Love With You'. It came off the Live album called Life and features all the Thin Lizzy guitarists Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and John Sykes. Texas Hippie Coalition moved the show out of the ballads and Night Ranger and Queensrÿche continued the excellent medicine and took it to the next level. The new Queensrÿche, Digital Noise Alliance' is fantastic, check it out. This show just had too much material and not enough time. We tipped the hat to Judas Priest for their well-deserved and long overdue inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we listened to another awesome Vivian Campbell solo and heard how powerful Andrew Freeman is on a track called ‘Year of The Gun' and we squeezed in an amazingly emotional track from My Chemical Romance called 'The World is Ugly'. The consensus on the chat was that MCR are correct on this point. Cheers all, see you next week, I hope you enjoy the episode. Artists featured: ACDC, Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, White Zombie, Drowning Pool, Papa Roach, Popa Chubby, ZZ Top, Iron Maiden, Herman Frank, Rammstein, Anthrax, Dead City Ruins, Burning Rain, Skid Row, Five Finger Death Punch, Scorpions, Tony Martin, Joe Lynn Turner, Leslie West Tribute, Limp Bizkit, Hole, Nazareth, The Gaslight Anthem, Jimmy Barnes, Thin Lizzy, Texas Hippie Coalition, Night Ranger, Queensrÿche, Halestorm, Judas Priest, Last In Line, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Johnny Cash, In Flames The Story of Rock and Roll. This week we resume our deep dive into "Are You Out There," Night Demon's third 7" single of 2020 and a featured track on the newly released Year of the Demon compilation LP/CD/MC. We begin with the band members discussing the premise that the song is more hard rock than metal, and explaining how the feel and vibe of the track are actually in harmony with Night Demon's ethos and catalog. They then go into great detail about working with legendary producer Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Illinois. You will hear vignettes and insights into what Albini did and didn't do in the studio, and how he is an audio engineer rather than a music producer. Also, Jarvis describes the lyrical inspiration of the song: how it connects to Phil Lynott, how it harkens back to a song Jarvis wrote about Marilyn Monroe many years ago, and how it is also an autobiographical track for him. O THIN LIZZY foi uma banda irlandesa que influenciou bastante o movimento New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) na Inglaterra. Um dos grandes responsáveis pelo sucesso da banda foi o álbum JAILBREAK, que contava com os hits "The Boys Are Back in Town" e a música homônica. Além dessas, o álbum traz também: "Angel from the Coast", "Running Back", "Romeo and the Lonely Girl", "Warriors", "Fight or Fall", "Cowboy Song" e "Emerald". A banda era formada por Phil Lynott (vocais, baixo, violão), Brian Downey (bateria e percussão), Brian Robertson (guitarra) e Scott Gorham (guitarra). Então, convidamos Claudio Borges ( @Resenhando Rock ) para tomar uma e falar sobre todas as faixas do JAILBREAK, do THIN LIZZY! ******************************************** SEJA MEMBRO DO CLUBE TUPFS E TENHA ACESSO A UMA SÉRIE DE VANTAGENS! Like many bands in the 70's Thin Lizzy wanted to capture the energy of the live experience their studio albums failed to do. The result is the masterpiece Live & Dangerous. The album includes performances from the 76 & 77 tours from Philadelphia, Toronto, & London. Frequent Hook Rocks contributor Rob in the Hood (@TheRecidivists) checks in to discuss the band, the album, & the influence Phil Lynott & the guitar duo of Scott Gorham & Brian Roberton had on rock music. Happy St.Pattys's Day Metal Heads. To keep with the spirit of the Irish we welcome one of their own to this weeks show. Jon 'The Mc Vernomatic " Verno welcomes Irish Rocker Ricky Warwick to the show. Metal Forever Mark and "McVernomatic" share some past concerts shenanigans in a holiday edition of METAL CONFESSIONS. Ricky Warwick is a Northern Irish musician and songwriter, and the lead singer with Black Star Riders and Thin Lizzy. He is also the frontman for the Scottish hard rock band The Almighty. with whom he achieved chart success in the UK throughout the 1990s. Warwick has released several solo albums and performed with a variety of other bands and artists, and also fronts his own band, The Fighting Hearts, to showcase his solo material.Warwick gained notoriety when he was asked to join a revised version of Thin Lizzy by long time thin Lizzy member Scott Gorham. In September 2009, Gorham began to assemble a new version of Thin Lizzy, and in May 2010 a new line-up was announced. Joining Gorham was original drummer Brian Downey, long-standing keyboardist Darren Wharton, Def Leppard guitarist Vivian Campbell, and singer Ricky Warwick from The Almighty, while Marco Mendoza returned to fill the bass guitar role. In April 2011 the band announced that Vivian Campbell would be leaving Thin Lizzy amicably to rejoin Def Leppard after one final gig on 28 May. He was replaced by Guns N' Roses guitarist Richard Fortus.[46] On 28 August, it was announced that Damon Johnson of Alice Cooper's band would be replacing Fortus for Thin Lizzy's tour of the US with Judas Priest. Fortus returned to tour with Guns N' Roses for the rest of the year, and Johnson has since replaced Fortus permanently. On 10 October 2012, Thin Lizzy announced that the new material would not be released under the Thin Lizzy name, but would be released under the name of Black Star Riders.. According to Gorham, this was "out of respect to Phil Lynott and the legacy he created", though he confirmed that the new material would feature the classic Thin Lizzy sound. Ricky Warwick announced that the group would cease regular touring as Thin Lizzy at the end of 2012, Today sees Ricky Warwick release his first solo record in five years with 'When Life Was Hard And Fast'. To celebrate the release of the new album, For the process of recording the album, Ricky was joined by Robert Crane (Bass), Xavier Muriel (Drums) and Keith Nelson (Guitar) as well as a number of special guests including Def Leppard's Joe Elliott, Andy Taylor formerly of Duran Duran, Thunder's Luke Morley, Dizzy Reed of the mighty Guns 'N Roses and even Ricky's daughter Pepper. Keith also produced the new album, having previously worked with Buckcherry, Blackberry Smoke and Alice Cooper. Keith noted that "Ricky is a true Rock-n-Roll soul... he's got incredible stories to tell and a unique way of telling them. It's been an honor to be asked to partner and contribute to this record.” Vernomatic gets the details of how Black Star Riders and Thin Lizzy have a unique connection to the Metal world. Great listen and A superv way to celebrate with our Irish friends. https://youtu.be/ayqMcr9JOOs Facebook.com/rickywarwickofficial Twitter.com/rickywarwick Instagram.com/rickywarwickofficial
Åren går, men många hjältar består.
This week on BTV we're joined by Ricky Warwick, we chat about his new album 'When Life was hard & fast' , his beginnings with The Almighty, working with Scott Gorham and the transition from Thin Lizzy to Black Star Riders.

In this episode we celebrate the music of Thin Lizzy! Having just released his new book, Thin Lizzy, Every Album, Every Song I am delighted to be joined by Graeme Stroud. Graeme is a musician and writer and has written on websites and blogs on a number of subjects, both musical and non-musical, for several years. He has also performed interviews and written feature articles, gig reviews and album reviews for the rock website VelvetThunder. Over the course of 12 studio albums and raucous live sets, and armed with Les Pauls and Marshalls, Thin Lizzy astounded audiences with blend of twin guitars roaring with harmony and electrifying power. Fronted by charismatic Phil Lynott from their early years with Eric Bell and later Gary Moore, through the glory days of the Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham line-up, Lizzy scaled heights unimaginable for an Irish band up till then. They mixed hard rock with tender stories of identity and Irish mythology and unlike other rock bands that fell during the rise of Punk, Lizzy bloomed delighting both Rock and Punk fans.I was fortunate enough to see them play at 18 gigs, (Yes I liked/like them!), from 1975-1983 when they disbanded and their songs became a soundtrack for both myself and group of friends. Their music is loved and appreciated as much today as it was in the 1970s and early '80s.Graeme's links;https://www.velvetthunder.co.uk/https://chalkhillblue.bandcamp.com/to purchase the book UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thin-Lizzy-Every-Album-Track/USA https://www.amazon.com/Thin-Lizzy-every-album-Track/Special thanks to Andy Fox , radio broadcaster, for his kind permission for use of his photos on Undercurrent Stories Facebook and Instagram pages;https://www.facebook.com/undercurrentstories https://www.instagram.com/undercurrentstories/Andy Fox links;http://www.bcfmradio.com/https://www.gtfm.co.ukhttps://www.rock-radio.co.ukAnd very special thanks to Scott Johnson for his kind permission for use of his artwork featuring Phil Lynott on Undercurrent Stories Facebook and Instagram pages;https://www.facebook.com/undercurrentstorieshttps://www.instagram.com/undercurrentstories/Scott's link;If any listeners would like to buy any products with Scott's painting on such as t shirts, mugs, badges, stickers etc. please visit RedBubble http://tiny.cc/pp26tz

This weekend, Producer Tony Considine goes back in time to tell the story of Dublin’s first large-scale rock festival, the 1977 Thin Lizzy homecoming show at Dalymount Park. The show was staged to mark Philo's 28th birthday. 43 years on, we celebrate the event in his memory. The radio premiere of ‘Dancing in the Floodlights’ airs on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday 23rd August at 7am, with a repeat broadcast airing on Saturday 29th August at 9pm. Image: Tony Considine 2020 ‘Dancing in the Floodlights’ Producer Tony Considine says: Despite their absence this year, attendance at music festivals is a rite of passage for Irish teenagers and twenty-somethings. Every summer sees stadium gigs at Croke Park and the Aviva on Lansdowne Road, festivals the length and breadth of the country as well as huge outdoor shows at the likes of Malahide Castle, Phoenix Park, Marley Park and St Anne’s. Yet, it was only a little over forty years ago that Dublin saw its first ever large-scale outdoor rock festival. And the venue was somewhere that has nearly been forgotten in terms of its place in Irish rock history, despite having stories connected to it involving Irish legends such as Phil Lynott and iconic international figures from Bob Marley to Beyoncé. While the likes of the Lisdoonvarna festival catered for the folk music scene from 1978 to 1983, the Lizzy gig pre-dated this by a year. Between 1977 and 1983, Dalymount was the only show in town for rock music fans looking for the festival experience on the island of Ireland. Original poster from Dalymount Park gig 1977 'Dancing in the Floodlights' tells the story of how that first concert came about, the impact it had on some of those who made it happen, who attended and who performed. It combines original interviews with Thin Lizzy guitarist Scott Gorham, Radiators from Space singer Steve Averill (aka Steve Rapid), Concert Promoters Pat and Marie Murphy, DJ Pat James and Journalist Frank McNally alongside music and archive footage from the time. June 2020: Ricky Warwick is the ‘lad’ from Northern Ireland who got to walk in his hero’s shoes, even though he refuses to admit he wears them. The now lead singer with Thin Lizzy, Ricky plays songs written by Phil Lynott and performs with Scott Gorham to bring them to life again. But, more than that, he is also the frontman of Black Star Riders, who have made four of the finest hard rock albums of modern times, and was also the frontman for the hard rock band The Almighty, who achieved chart success in the UK throughout the 90s. It’s a while since Ricky and I last saw each other but he is every bit as humble as he was then and we chat about stepping into those famous shoes, Ricky’s solo albums, performing virtually and shaking your bahookie. #RickyWarwick #ThinLizzy #BlackStarRiders #The Almighty #TheFightingHearts #Rock

We give a little Irish to you this week with our Thin Lizzy Discussion! Greg Troyan of the band Lipstick and podcast The Lipstick Panel joins us to cover the Thin Lizzy discography. Join us as we take you through each album, giving detailed stories about the production and songwriting. Additionally, we provide our thoughts on each album, picking our favorite songs. The Thin Lizzy history starts in 1971. Distributed by Decca Records and featuring the trio of Phil Lynott, Eric Bell, and Brian Downey, the first two albums, Thin Lizzy and Shades of a Blue Orphanage (1972), show a band struggling to find it's signature sound. However, there are several solid tracks on the first two albums. The original lineup ends its run on a high note with 1973's Vagabonds of the Western World. The classic Thin Lizzy lineup gets its start with 1974's Nightlife album. While new guitarists Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson display a bit of their future firepower on tracks like Sha La La and It's Only Money, the album is markedly mellow with such laid-back tracks as the title track, She Knows, and Frankie Carroll. 1975's Fighting album would see Thin Lizzy hone their sound into a tight, melodic hard rock. Tracks such as Fighting My Way Back, Suicide, and Freedom Song would show more edge while not losing melody. The ballad Wild One and moody Spirit Slips Away make Fighting a great album from front to back. Thin Lizzy would burst onto the world stage in 1976 with the release of Jailbreak. The title track and breakthrough single The Boys Are Back in Town propels the band to a much larger audience. Additionally, this strong effort is rounded out with such musical gems as Romeo and the Lonely Girl and Emerald. Thin Lizzy 1976 would see two releases from the band. Johnny the Fox, while not as successful as the previous album, boasts an impressive track list. Songs like Don't Believe a Word, Massacre, Old Flame, and Borderline would continue to show the diversity of song-craft from this band. Furthermore, Thin Lizzy would continue to impress in 1977 with the release of Bad Reputation. While marred with personnel issues during production, the album still delivers. Brian Robertson is in and out of the band during the making of this release, leaving Scott Gorham to handle the bulk of the guitar playing. Nevertheless, Bad Reputation is loaded with fantastic songs such as the title-track, Opium Trail, and the heartfelt Southbound. Thin Lizzy would document their awe-inspiring live sets with 1978's Live and Dangerous. Produced by Tony Visconti, the album would becomes a musical gateway drug for many aspiring rock musicians. Named by many as the greatest live rock album ever created, it is a blistering live document. Thin Lizzy Gary Moore, who had subbed previously over time for Brian Robertson, becomes a full member of Thin Lizzy in time for the next album. Black Rose: A Rock Legend is touted by many fans as the band's finest work. Songs such as Do Anything You Want to Do, Waiting for an Alibi, and Sarah do a great job of showing up the band's sense of melody and technical proficiency. Gary Moore's tenure doesn't last long and guitarist Snowy White is brought in for 1980's Chinatown album. Considered by some as a letdown in comparison to Black Rose, it still boasts some impressive songs such as the anthemic We Will Be Strong, Sweetheart, and Killer On the Loose. 1981's Renegade album is a divisive one among Thin Lizzy fans. The choices of keyboardist Darren Wharton and noted heavy metal producer Chris Tsangarides leaves some fans wondering if Thin Lizzy is abandoning their sound. While different, Renegade still has plenty of strong material including Leave This Town, No One Told Him, and the incredibly dark Angel of Death. Thin Lizzy releases their final album in 1983. Thunder and Lightning is a strong way to go out. Featuring the playing of John Sykes and, again, produced by Chris Tsangarides, the album is a ferocious final sonic document of a band that should have ruled the world. Songs like the title track, Cold Sweat, and The Holy War close out the Thin Lizzy canon with a bang. Damon Johnson joins us this week for a discussion of his incredible career. At the present time, Damon has his hands full with Black Star Riders and his upcoming solo album Memoirs of an Uprising. Damon Johnson really brings it in this long-form talk with some great stories from his career and life. From Brother Cane's early days opening for such legends as Van Halen, Aerosmith and Robert Plant among others. Additionally, Damon shares his memories of Brother Cane navigating a shifty musical tide in the 1990's. [caption id="attachment_44329" align="alignright" width="350"] Damon Johnson [/caption] Damon's post-Brother Cane career has taken many twists and turns. Collaborations with Sammy Hagar, Faith Hill, Damn Yankees, Carlos Santana, and Slave to the System (featuring members of Queensryche) show the range of talent in his arsenal. In 2004, Damon Johnson was brought into the Alice Cooper band. In this conversation, he shares his memories of getting the gig, his relationship with Alice, and what he's learned from his time in the band. 2011 saw Damon get to live out another childhood dream as he joined Thin Lizzy. Touring under that banner, he formed a strong chemistry with guitarist Scott Gorham and singer Ricky Warwick. The seeds for Black Star Riders were planted. Ultimately, Black Star Riders would take the Thin Lizzy spirit and breathe life into a well-oiled machine; releasing three solid albums of material. As of 2018, the catalog, including All Hell Breaks Loose, The Killer Instinct, and Heavy Fire, has built a devoted global fan base. Aside from band work with living legends, Damon has a great catalog of solo material. His first album, Dust, was released in 2000. Release would come along in 2010 and Echo in 2016. A live album, Birmingham Tonight, represents 2017 for Damon Johnson. For 2018, Damon has set his sights on another solo album. Memoirs of an Uprising is being funded through Pledge Music.
