From the late 70's to the mid 80's Brent Thomson was almost certainly Australia's most high profile jockey. As number one rider for the powerful Lindsay Park training operation, he got to ride some of the nation's best horses in Group 1 races around the nation. Brent quit the saddle in 2000 and was quickly signed by New Zealand Bloodstock as the company's Australian representative. He continues to fill that role from his Melbourne base. When you conduct an interview with a bloke like Brent Thomson, it's hard to know where to start and where to finish. We give it a crack on this week's podcast, beginning with his decision to retire at the end of a Macau stint twenty four years ago. Brent talks of the vibrant state of racing in Macau at the time, and a Derby win on a smart horse called Cheerine Champion. He recalls the final winning ride of his career on a horse with strong Australian connections. We fast forward to his current situation and the diversified role he has with New Zealand Bloodstock. The former champion jockey takes us right back to early days in Wanganui (sometimes Whanganui) and an apprenticeship to his father Kevin who rode successfully before turning to training. Brent reminisces about his very first winning ride way over on the east coast of the north island. He looks back on a NZ win on Fury's Order which gained him the Cox Plate ride. He's never forgotten the loyalty of the horse's owner. Brent takes us through one of the wettest Cox Plates on record. He talks about the nickname bestowed upon him by a prominent Melbourne journalist- a nickname still used by friends and associates. The former champion jockey looks back on a second Cox Plate win on Family Of Man, a horse he admired tremendously. He recalls the stallion's swansong appearance at Pinjarra in WA. Brent clearly recalls the day Colin Hayes called him out of the Trentham jockey's room with a gobsmacking offer. He talks of an opportunity to repay Colin Hayes by landing So Called a winner in the Cox Plate soon after beginning his new job. Brent takes us right through his amazing association with champion Dulcify. Recollections of the great horse's breakdown in the 1979 Melbourne Cup haunt him to this day. He looks back on a seven year association with the legendary Colin Hayes. Brent talks of the “pick up” ride on Gurner's Lane which brought him the first of two Caulfield Cups. He was bitterly disappointed when Lindsay Park commitments prevented his riding the horse in the Melbourne Cup. He looks back on a second Caulfield Cup on freakish mud runner Lord Reims. Much has been written about Dandy Andy's shock defeat of Vo Rogue at odds of 125/1 in the 1988 Australian Cup. He wasn't keen to ride the horse. Brent looks back on a UK trip instigated by Robert Sangster. He talks of the super horses he got to ride in two trips to Europe. He also reflects on some notable success in Hong Kong. Before taking up his Macau contract in the late 90's Brent spent some time on the Gold Coast. He talks of a winning run for retired trainer Alan Bailey. Brent takes us through his background in the “marriage stakes” and pays tribute to his four children and two grandchildren. He looks back on a relatively lucky run with injury. This is a lovely trip down memory lane with the Kiwi jockey who was one of the leading players in an era of great horses and unforgettable horsemen.

Description: For the tenured bible student, this intense and gripping series takes you deep into the lives and experiences of 6 men who were in the presence of Christ (Peter, Andrew, Judas, Nicodemus and Thomas). From their perspective, the speaker examines the scriptures to impart to demonstrate what their lives with Jesus Christ might have been like. Also, each of the disciples' counterparts from the Old Testament is foreshadowed, along with the lessons we can extract from them. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/christadelphians-talk/message
The Conservative Political Action Conference rolled into Sydney last week, and it's an extreme libertarian group who are maniacally angry, loud, abrasive, in-your-face, and filled with endless complaints about everything in their sights.A culture of complaint but without any solutions and without any responsibilities. They're anti-socialist, anti-woke, anti-republic, anti-cancel culture. What are they actually for? Is there anything positive in their agenda? No. It's destructive, not constructive. These are cashed-up babies who never really grew and are suffering from arrested development. Sure, there are the fools on all sides of politics, but this chapter of CPAC is on a special level of its own.Should the CPAC be left to its own devices and wither away? No, every argument they put forward can be easily rebutted, but they're supported by the wealth class, who are only too happy to fund this level of unhinged stupidity to sway opinions in the electorate. Just as special CPAC guest, Nigel Farage, managed to do with Brexit – he extracted Britain from the European Union, and left it teetering on the edge of disaster and obscurity. In the same way Australia conservatives embraced Lord Monckton in the early 2010s to manufacture anger against Labor's carbon pricing mechanism, yet another failed British reject is sent off to antipodes to spread his own brand of lies, racism, classism and hate. This nihilistic agenda has to be pushed back at every opportunity.15 min 50 – The Frontier WarsThe Australian War Memorial has announced that it will expand the recognition of the different frontier wars that occurred in Australia – and they were the conflicts between white settlers and police on one side, and Indigenous people – and this is after sustained criticism over many years that the War Memorial mainly focussed its attention on overseas wars and totally ignored the wars against Indigenous people that commenced a few months after European settlement or invasion in 1788, and lasted until the 1930s.And much of this has been documented – there were the Hawkesbury and Nepean Wars, the Bathurst War, there was the Black Wars in Tasmania, Battle of Pinjarra, the battles in the Kimberley region – and there's many more that have been documented as well – and at least 40,000 Indigenous people died, and around 3000 settlers. And the effects of these frontiers wars and violence are still affecting Indigenous people, a treaty or a formal end to these wars had never been made – most people aren't aware of the details of these frontier wars – there's still more that needs to be done in this space, but the Australian War Memorial expanding this knowledge to the general public is a good start.27 min 22 – Liz Truss and Tax Lessons for LaborWe don't usually comment on British politics, but the new British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, may have just done the Australian Labor Party a huge favour, and that was when she announced that she was going to provide a tax cut for high income earners in the UK – abolishing the tax rate of 45% for incomes over £150,000.It's safe to say that not very many people were happy with this decision – the British pound dropped dramatically, there was a revolt within the Conservative Party, and there was a political backlash within the British electorate, which resulted in opinions polls showing 54% support for the British Labour Party, and just 21% support for the Tories.Abolishing the top tax rate meant that people earning over £150K would be paying 40% in tax, so it's not a major adjustment, but that's the revolt that occurred by dropping the highest tax bracket by 5%. The Stage 3 tax cuts, which are supposedly coming in at the beginning of the 2024/25 tax years, propose remove the 37% tax band, and just having the 32.5% tax band for incomes between $45K and $200K – so it's a different type of tax cut, but it's still significant, and actually worse than what the UK proposed – Anthony Albanese and the Labor government are starting to face a lot of pressure over the Stage 3 tax cuts, even though it's not their policy – but should they looking at what's happening in the UK to guide their decision making?

The boys are both well and truely in front for their $100 strategies this season but BJ has skipped away with a $55 winner included in his last week. SWEDEN'S GIGAFACTORY EXPANSION"The Swedish battery manufacturer says it has signed a USD 2.75 billion private placement to finance further battery cell production capacity and R&D efforts. The company is looking to expand its Swedish gigafactory, Northvolt Ett, from 40 to 60 GWh of annual capacity." says evertiq.com: "With this private placement, Northvolt has raised more than USD 6.5 billion in equity and debt to enable an expansion plan leading up to and beyond 150 GWh of deployed annual production capacity in Europe by 2030. In addition, Northvolt has to date secured in excess of USD 27 billion worth of contracts from key customers, including BMW, Fluence, Scania and Volkswagen" Recharge reports: "VW said it is contributing $620m in the financing round, and thus will maintain a 20% stake in Northvolt. The carmaker had already invested about €900m ($1.1bn) in Northvolt in 2019, and has a seat on the battery cell specialist's board of directors. In order to meet its ambitious 2030 capacity target, Northvolt plans to build at least two more gigafactories in Europe over the coming decade, and is actively exploring the possibility of building one of these in Germany, the core of the continent's car manufacturing sector." chief executive Peter Carlsson: "We have been producing cells at our cell industrialisation facility, Northvolt Labs, for more than a year and are excited to now bring the knowledge and technology we have developed to the north and start large-scale production, https://evertiq.com/news/50151 https://www.rechargenews.com/energy-transition/world-s-greenest-battery-vw-backed-northvolt-raises-almost-3bn-for-gigafactory-ramp-up/2-1-1022422 TESLA'S GIGAFACTORY TEXAS MODEL Y MACHINERY IS ALREADY OPERATIONAL"Tesla Inc's Gigafactory Texas is the company's latest vehicle production factory. It is supposed to begin production later this year of Tesla's Model Y, followed by the Cybertruck and Tesla Semi. And now it appears Tesla's factory is already hard at work. Teslarati shared a video from Twitter showing multiple pieces of machinery inside Gigafactory whirring away. The equipment is most likely in an initial testing phase as Tesla gets ready to start production." according to Benzinga: "Although the factory is also still under construction, Tesla could begin vehicle production while other areas of the factory are built. In May, hundreds of Model Y front castings were seen piled outside of Gigafactory Texas. This latest video adds to the evidence Tesla is aggressively pushing its schedule to begin Model Y production at Gigafactory Texas as soon as possible. It needs to do so if it wants to meet demand, as all of quarter two inventory was sold out early." https://www.benzinga.com/news/21/06/21451261/video-shows-teslas-gigafactory-texas-model-y-machinery-is-already-operational ELECTRICITY EV PRODUCTION CENTER"Renault announced a new, wholly-owned legal entity Renault ElectriCity, that groups together the industrial sites of Douai, Maubeuge and Ruitz in northern France, totalling nearly 5,000 employees. This move is part of the previously announced Renaulution strategic plan, and will enable to "electrify" the plants with an ambition of 400,000 vehicles per year by 2025." says InsideEVs: "The Douai plant is scheduled to start production of its first electric car later this year. It will be the all-electric Megane E-Vision, based on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance's CMF-EV platform, utilized also by Nissan in the upcoming Ariya model. The Maubeuge plant is not a newbie to EVs, as it has been making the Renault Kangoo Z.E. with lithium-ion batteries for about 10 years. In 2022, Renault will launch the all-new Kangoo Van E-TECH Electric. We guess that the plant will produce also electric vans for Nissan and Daimler. The plant in Ruitz will supply electrical components to other plants." https://insideevs.com/news/512984/renault-creates-electricity-production-centre/ FERRARI TURNS TO TECH INDUSTRY FOR ITS ELECTRIC ERA LEADER"Ferrari (RACE.MI) has turned to technology industry veteran Benedetto Vigna to drive the luxury sports car maker known for its roaring, high-octane engines into a new era of silent, electric powertrains." says Reuters: "Vigna, 52, currently runs the biggest division of semiconductor maker STMicroelectronics (ST) (STM.BN), where he has worked since 1995 and helped pioneer the sensors first used in iPhones to rotate the screen by turning the handset. Vigna's appointment announced on Wednesday shows Ferrari's development strategy remains firmly anchored in manufacturing cutting-edge, high-end sports cars for an electric era, rather than repositioning itself as a pure luxury goods company. It also highlights the challenges facing carmakers as they adapt to the green revolution forcing the industry to move away from combustion engines and embrace new technologies from batteries to connectivity to autonomous driving." https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/ferrari-appoints-stm-exec-benedetto-vigna-new-ceo-2021-06-09/ NEW JERSERY INCENTIVES UNCERTAIN"New Jersey is so eager to get more electric vehicles on the road, the state was literally paying residents to buy them. But that rebate — up to $5,000 in one of the most generous state incentives in the country — expired in December, meaning anyone who bought an EV in the past six months didn't get that benefit. And it's unclear when the program will resume." reports NJ.com: "For months, state officials said they were targeting summer 2021 to again incentivize electric car purchases. But here we are on the cusp of summer, and the restart date has yet to be announced. Combined with the federal tax credit of up to $7,500, EV drivers in the Garden State were getting as much as $12,500 off the sticker price of their cars, depending on the make and model." https://www.nj.com/news/2021/06/nj-wants-to-pay-you-to-buy-an-electric-vehicle-but-it-hasnt-said-when-it-will-resume-doing-so.html GRIDSERVE TAKES OVER THE ELECTRIC HIGHWAY" GRIDSERVE has today completed the purchase of the Electric Highway – the world's first national charging network for electric cars – from green energy supplier Ecotricity. The Electric Highway has played an important role in kickstarting the UK's electric vehicle revolution since it was established in 2011, enabling early adopters of EVs to drive across Britain." says Green Car Reports: " GRIDSERVE is ramping up its investment in the Electric Highway, replacing all existing pumps on the network with new technology that features all the latest advances, including contactless payment. Last month, for example, the Electric Highway opened the first high-power charging facility on the country's motorway network – at Moto's new flagship Rugby services, which features 12 of the new 350kW chargers." https://www.nextgreencar.com/news/9167/gridserve-takes-over-the-electric-highway/ THOUSANDS OF LONDON VANS COULD SWITCH TO ELECTRIC TODAY"More than 1.6 million vans across the UK could switch to ‘clean' electric power today, new technical analysis reveals. London has the potential to make the biggest single switch to green EVs of all, the research shows, with more than 85,000 making the switch." says the Evening Standard: "Fleet management services and solutions firm Masternaut - owned by tyre giant Michelin - compiled a year's worth of data from 37,252 electric vehicles to discover how and where EVs could provide a real-life replacement to petrol and diesel engined vehicles. The research found that UK fleet operators could replace 40 per cent of their current vehicles with electric alternatives today, with no daytime charging required. This transition from ICE fleets to EVs could reduce harmful emissions by 8.3 million tons of CO2 a year, according to Masternaut." https://www.standard.co.uk/tech/london-vans-electric-vehicles-switch-green-b939571.html TURNING DIESEL INTO ELECTRIC"Five years after the demise of Australian vehicle manufacturing in Adelaide, a growing number of businesses are retrofitting diesel light vehicles into custom electric vehicles (EVs) in Australia for use in underground mines." reports ABC: "Victoria-based mining supplier Safescape began developing its own EV in 2018. GB Auto signed a deal last year to retrofit 2000 LandCruisers into EVs at their facility in Orange, NSW.
