This spring I'm releasing bonus episodes of The Take Home. No new lectures on leadership, instead I'm sharing the amazing podcasts created by the students in my Leadership for Sport Professionals class. In this bonus episode of Season 5, I'm sharing "Leading on All Fronts" which was created and produced by Eric Liao and Kathryn Detweiler. Here are their liner notes: In the premiere and only episode of Leading on All Fronts, hosts Eric and Kathryn explore the critical themes of Inclusive Leadership and Team Leadership from chapters 12 and 16 of Peter G. Northouse's Leadership: Theory and Practice (9th Edition). They discuss key leadership strategies such as embracing responsibility, mastering clear and consistent communication, fostering a collective “bought-in” mentality, and exemplifying qualities that inspire others to follow. Their guest, Jeff Mueller, brings a wealth of experience and insight to the conversation. As a partner at Polen Capital and co-portfolio manager of the firm's Global Growth strategy, Mueller combines deep expertise in finance with a disciplined approach to leadership. He also serves as an adjunct professor at Columbia Business School, where he teaches Compounders in the renowned Value Investing Program. Mueller's path to leadership is both dynamic and inspiring. Over a decade of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, he flew more than 200 combat missions in F/A-18 aircraft, honing his skills in high-pressure, mission-critical environments. He later transitioned to finance, earning his M.B.A. with honors and distinction from Columbia Business School while being recognized as a Tillman Scholar. Before that, he graduated from Trinity University with a Bachelor of Arts in communication and business administration, captaining the men's tennis team, achieving All-American status, and contributing to a national championship victory. Today, he resides in Florida with his wife and two children. In this episode, Mueller reflects on the lessons learned throughout his career, emphasizing the importance of continuous growth and embracing the question, “What's next?” He also shares a powerful insight from his Marine Corps experience: the motto, “Mission first, Marines always.” This guiding principle underscores the need to prioritize team cohesion as the foundation for achieving a shared mission—wisdom that resonates far beyond military service. Through engaging dialogue and actionable insights, this episode provides a thoughtful exploration of leadership and its impact. It's a fitting way to both introduce and conclude Leading on All Fronts. Music Credits: ● Intro: "Epic" by BlackTrendMusic ● Outro: "Epic" by Lite Saturation
Polen Capital, with deep roots in the world of growth equity investing, has expanded into the opportunistic high yield bond market, leveraging its acquisition of DDJ Capital in 2021. Polen CEO, Stan Moss, and Head of Credit, Dave Breazzano, join Noel Hebert and Sam Geier on this special edition of Credit Crunch, live from the Greenwich Economic Forum. The conversation dives into the firm's focus on growth, the benefits of a flexible high yield investment approach, leadership through uncertain times, the credit cycle and more.
With special guest Dave Breazzano, head of credit at Polen Capital.
Dave Breazzano is the head of the Credit Team at Polen Capital, where he oversees $8 billion of the firm's $43 billion in assets. Dave is one of the OGs in high yield, having started in the early 1980s and invested continuously through more than forty years since. Our conversation covers some history of the high-yield market alongside Dave's involvement in it, the founding of his firm in 1996, Polen's strategy to take advantage of myths in the market, the implementation of the strategy, and Dave's thoughts on the changing interest rate environment, private credit, and opportunities and risks going forward. In our complex world of investing, I suspect you'll find elegance in the simplicity and clarity with which Dave approaches investing. My guest today believes that the underperformance of the Magnificent 7 is creating opportunities in small-cap equities as investors look to loosen their portfolio concentration in large-cap names. In addition, increased small-cap M&A activity, better credit market conditions, and a lower cost of capital, are creating fertile ground for small-cap companies. Here are some links to learn more about Rayna and Polen Capital:www. Private credit markets have shifted upmarket. Many larger financial players are seeking bigger deals that can have a greaterimpact on their portfolios. This has led to a vacuum in small/mid-cap deals where investors can get a significant yield premium to the overall market. In this episode, we will look at the public debt markets, where one can invest in high-yield/lower-rated bonds (e.g., triple Cs) to construct a portfolio that has a 200 or 300 basis point yield premium and has default losses equal to or less than the market. Investors can take advantage of market inefficiencies by participating in a part of the market that others are avoiding. Here are some links to learn more about Ben and Polen Capital: https://www.polencapital.com/people/ben-santonelli Equities are the building blocks of any successful portfolio. With some of the best, most innovative, and well-run businesses located beyond U.S. borders, limiting one's investments to the domestic market may inadvertently limit their portfolio's potential growth. While the world's economic activity is dynamic and diverse, smart investors are now exploring opportunities in previously seen as distant and foreign markets. In this episode, Rusty and Robyn talk with Daniel Fields and Todd Morris, portfolio managers and analysts at Polen Capital Management. Before joining Polen Capital, Daniel spent eight years in Hong Kong, working for Gavekal Capital and Marshall Wace LLP as a research analyst evaluating Asian growth companies. I met Dan several years ago at a workout and probably one of the nicest guys around. I knew he was involved in the opening of a local West Boca gym and that was about it. One of the best parts about being local is having people drop by and Dan would periodically drop in to pick up his order and just shoot the shit. Dan has 24 years of experience in the financial world and it led him down to south Florida in 2005 when he joined up with Polen Capital. He and his team deliver active equity and high yield strategies to a wide range of clients. They build high-conviction portfolios that we are competitively advantaged. Per Dan “Our mission is to preserve and grow client assets to protect their present and enable their future.” When we began growing and expanding FROPRO we put together an investment deck and ran it by several people. Dan gave it a look and he called us the next day to ask us several questions. He wanted to be a part of the team and help us continue our goal of expansion and snack domination. His whole message is about team work, collaboration and growth. Please enjoy the podcast and have a most triumphant day!

So, I think it's really important for investors to stay focused on the long term and stay focused on companies that can endure some of the obstacles that we're facing today." - Rayna Lesser Hannaway Links Rayna Lesser Hannaway on LinkedIn High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco Polen Capital Fidelity Investments Golden Seeds Taneka Lawrence Jeff Mueller Jim Collins Great By Choice by Jim Collins Invest Like the Best with Patrick O'Shaughnessy The Knowledge Project with Shane Parrish Huberman Lab Podcast Connect with our hosts Rusty Vanneman Robyn Murray Subscribe and stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Google Podcasts 0861-OPS-5/18/2022

The shift from COVID lockdown to COVID reopening has been stunning. Depending upon the stage of reopening economies around the world are rebounding. The markets’ response has been swift and dramatic particularly in the U.S. So what do you do if you are running a highly concentrated, large-cap growth fund? That is the challenge facing this week’s guest. Damon Ficklin is head of the Large Company Growth team at Polen Capital. In his first appearance on WEALTHTRACK I will begin with the basics. I will ask him to describe Polen’s high conviction, the low turnover strategy of focusing on the highest quality growth companies with margins of safety. What does that actually mean?
