This week the boys head into the cosmic realms conjured up by San Francisco's Fallujah, with their latest banger Xenotaph!
This week the boys are seeing triple, with the album Rivers of Nihil, featuring the Rivers of Nihil, by the band Rivers of Nihil
Send us a textWe're joined by bassist and vocalist Adam Biggs of Rivers of Nihil, as the band makes a thunderous return with Rivers Of Nihil, their self-titled album—their first in four years. Despite major lineup changes, Rivers of Nihil show no signs of slowing down. In fact, they've delivered what may be one of the most ambitious and forward-thinking metal releases of the year.Keeping things fresh and evolving your sound after 16 years isn't easy, but Adam and his bandmates have done just that—and that alone is a major accomplishment. This new album doesn't just reflect their growth; it pushes progressive death metal itself into bold, uncharted territory. In our conversation, Adam offers insight into the creative process, the shift in band dynamics, and what it means to continue carving out something unique in a genre known for complexity and innovation.Rivers of Nihil is out now on Metal Blade Records.
The decorations are up. The Candles are lit. You're making your way through your George Fisher Advent Calendar. That's right, it's finally Death Metal December. And to celebrate, the boys have chosen a fresh offering from Denver Psychedelic Death Metal masters Blood Incantation, 2024's excellent Absolute Elsewhere!
Dearly beloved, I bequeath unto thee this podcast, all about Opeth's latest banger, The Last Will and Testament.

This week the fellas went back to 1991 for an all-time great from Tech-Death masters Atheist, the fantastic Unquestionable Presence!
Six years ago, Kayle wouldn't shut up about this album. And now, six years later, he still won't shut up about it. This week, we have Where Owls Know My Name by Rivers of Nihil.
It's early october and the boys are already on the Edge of Sanity... also there's a weird smell in the apartment. Oh, and they listened to Crimson by Edge of Sanity.
This week the boys (joined by special guest, Cricket) talk about Opeth's 2005 classic, Ghost Reveries!
(Relatively) Fresh off Gojira's performance at the Olympic opening ceremonies, the fellas take some time this week to go back to Gojira's 2008 masterpiece The Way of All Flesh!
Both boys may be unwell, but that won't stop them in the slightest from gushing about the first Job For a Cowboy album in a decade: Moon Healer!

It's once again time to gather around the computer/phone for a holiday listen to our annual Chuckmas episode! This year we listen to th 7th and final of St. Schuldiner's albums with Death, 1998's The Sound of Perseverance!
DEATH METAL DECEMBER continues with the newest from Canada's Tomb Mold: The Enduring Spirit!
Sometimes when you go to live in a cabin in the woods for a while, you write Walden. Sometimes, you write a kickass progressive death metal album. Joe Duplantier of Gojira did the second one.
After five long years, Philedelphia Prog Death Metal masters Horrendous have finally blessed us with a new album, Ontological Mysterium, and by jove the boys are gonna give it a listen!

It's been somewhere around 200 episodes, and the lack of any new album from Philly death metal dealers Horrendous (though that is soon to change) has driven the boys to return to give 2015's excellent Anareta a spin.

Death Metal december continues! This week the boys get into the excellent Netherheaven by Boston's Revocation!
The fellas take a dive into some Progressive/Technical Death metal with the exceptional Empyrean by Fallujah!
Since 2006, Boston's Revocation have churned out some of the most progressive and highly technical death metal. Now, with Netherheaven (Metal Blade Records), the band's eight full length, they still walk that line but have one of their most 'straight forward death metal' albums they've ever done. And it is GLORIOUS. Buke recently sat down with guitarist and vocalist David Davidson for a wide ranging discussion surrounding the new album, how it came to be, how David ended up in the engineer and producer's chair, and much more. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy. 9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

New York's Artificial Brain are somewhat of an anomaly in the death metal world. Sure they're rooted in death metal but in the blink of an eye can cover tech-death, progressive death, jazz, and noise like world class pros. Their debut Labyrinth Constellation was like stepping on a landmine of infinite sounds and follow up Infrared Horizon saw them branch out a bit and experiment with obtuse and jagged rhythms and melodies that absolutely should not go together but somehow it all just gelled. And now with their third full length, a self-titled one (Profound Lore Records), it seems they're out for blood. It's a bit more on the death metal nose but more angular and aggressive than before. Definitely one that should be on your radar. Buke recently sat down with guitarist Oleg Zalman to dig into the ethos of the new album and of the band and how it all came together. We now bring you this conversation in its entirety so grab your beverage of choice, a seat, and enjoy.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
It's no secret that here at Nine Circles we love some Allegaeon. So, it's obvious we had to get vocalist Riley McShane back to chat about their new album Damnum (Metal Blade Records) and how it came together as well as how it was to work with new blood drummer Jeff Saltzman and what he brought to the table. They also cover how touring brings the best and worst out of people, the deeply personal lyrics in the new album, attachment to albums and when to let them go, how there's never any finish line to success and there's always room to grow, pandemic effects on the band and their touring, not taking criticism from someone you wouldn't take advice from, and gamer talk. All this and so much more.9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram
Episode 65, I have a conversation with Jess and Tony from the Progressive Death Metal band from Portland, Or called Sea Sleeper! Of course I ask these guys how the band formed up, and then find out what music they listened to growing up. We go on to some of their influences and ask them about the local Portland music scene. I asked them about their recording experience they did when coming up with their album Nostophobia. We also talked about the music videos they have done for their music and more, so check it out!!! The opening theme music was made by Hostages who has given me full permission to use it. I also had permission to use Sea Sleeper's songs, "Salt" and "Old Guard". You can check out Sea Sleeper at their FB page at: Sea Sleeper | Facebook, you can also check them out on IG at: sea_sleeper and also to see videos of them play, their YouTube page is: Sea Sleeper - YouTube --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
Time sure does fly but don't worry - the episode opens with what everyone was listening to for September, except for Hera, who talks about an album back in May. That's how we roll, folks! Then it's onto current matters with Anton reaching for Gloire Éternelle by First Fragment (Unique Leader). It's an interesting choice for the team, with staunch tech death advocates on one side of the house and folks that...let's say lean toward the polar opposite in terms of musical tastes. And yet, there's something undeniable about the way First Fragment blend so many different styles into their unique brand of music. Of course it helps immensely when you have people like Phil Tougas and Dominic Lapointe bringing the heat in at a nuclear level. Unique Leader is no stranger to putting out great technical death metal, but in First Fragment we have something that colors outsides those lines and yet stands as a champion of what the label and genre have to offer. All that and - surprising no one - a lengthy segment about some of the other great music that came out in October (though no mention of Mastodon...something we'll rectify for year, end ;-)) including fellow tech death nerds Archspire who released their mammoth second album Bleed the Future, Monolord's latest Your Time to Shine, and the death doom glory of Foreverglad by Worm. Deep waters ahead so dive in and join the crew!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Beyond Creation have become a giant in the tech death arena since forming in 2005 (under a different moniker) and, have done this with just three full lengths which is impressive to say the least. Beyond that, the band has a progressive side as well that went full tilt on their last album Algorythm (Season of Mist). Now, they've paired with Vox and Hops Brewtal North America and Overhop for a stout beer named closely after one of their songs. Our main man on the mic, Buke, chats with Simon Girard about this new beer venture and how it all came about as well as the whys of picking a coffee stout to be their maiden voyage into the beer market. They also cover technical death metal in general, band and personal musical history and how Simon's Grandfather made a huge impact on him, the explosion of craft breweries in Montréal as well as stateside, some of Simon's favorite beers and favorite death metal, and how they continue to experiment with tech death without crossing the line of alienating fans. As a bonus, we get some talk about Simon's upcoming solo album. This is an excellent chat so jump in and enjoy!9C LINKS: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

Bionic Swarm, the debut from Cryptosis has become an early favorite for many of the staff at Nine Circles. Jamming together old school thrash, progressive death metal, and a healthy dose of symphonic black metal in its arrangements, it's the kind of debut that instantly slams into your skull and rewires your brain. So it's only natural that Buke not only championed the band and album to everyone on the crew, but grabbed some time with bassist Frank te Riet to talk about album. But this is Buke we're talking about here, so of course the conversation winds its way into a number of interesting places, from the state of metal in the Netherlands, to the shared experience of Slipknot as a gateway to extreme metal, and to how you exactly mountain bike in a place not known for its mountains. It's a great talk as usual, and combined with the mighty riffs to be found on Bionic Swarm we're 89% sure you'll find your heart's desire tucked away in a drawer in your parent's old house. Or not - but you'll at least get some fantastic metal and a great chat.Bionic Swarm is available now on Century Media Records.
