Our industry is unhealthily obsessed with two words: best practice. You see them regularly on internal comms blogs, you hear it at internal comms conferences, those words come up frequently on LinkedIn. But a best practice approach only works for simple, non-complex work. The work we do as internal communicators is highly unpredictable and and complex, charged with human emotion and full of complexity. Joanna proposes that we instead talk about “good practices” and think about innovation as an antidote to best practice.Joanna Parsons is the Founder and Director of The Curious Route, an internal communication consultancy practice. She helps organisations to create effective systems of internal communication.  Joanna is a content creator and thought leader in internal communication with a following of more than 16k on LinkedIn and a new YouTube channel just launched. This month, in partnership with the Public Relations Institute of Australia, we mark Global PR Measurement Month by speaking with adjunct professor, lecturer, researcher, presenter - Fraser Likely - from his hometown in Ottawa Canada. Having an industry level discussion to highlight the importance of measurement has never been more critical. According to a recent study into continuing professional development conducted by the Public Relations Institute of Australia, measurement and evaluation is one of the top three priorities for Australia’s professional communicators. While Fraser Likely is today synonymous with PR measurement and evaluation, for 30 years, while running his own communication management firm, Fraser never spoke about measurement and evaluation. It was simply performance management. And while the tools, technology and techniques are now more sophisticated, at its heart measurement and evaluation is still all about performance - whether that be of a program, a campaign, a team or an organisation. Fraser defines seven units of measurement: we can measure a specific communication activity and associated messages; a project or campaign; programs such as internal comms or issues management; how PR helps the whole organisation achieve its business goals; how organisation do in regard its environment and society around it (CSR or reputation); the performance of individual practitioners; or the overall communication function and what value it has to an organisation. With measurement and evaluation more sophisticated than ever, the greatest question today is what is the uptake among practitioners? For Fraser, engagement with measurement and evaluation goes hand in hand with the role communications plays in an organisation. Those professional communicators with a seat at the table and part of the strategic management process will look at measurement and evaluation in a much more sophisticated way.

Agencies are faced with the eternal debate – to focus on securing more big-ticket projects or steady retainers from trusted clients. This is being felt more than ever in agencies across Australia, and the world, as clients make a choice to shift more of their marketing – and PR – budgets towards projects. Dan Beaumont, MD of The Royals, recently wrote about this in Mumbrella, forecasting a ‘post-retainer world’ where the cyclical shift towards projects is being felt globally and locally, and may have a lasting impact on our business models. Join our host Shane Allison, CEO and co-founder of Public Address, Dan Beaumont, Mylan Vu, MD of Hotwire Global and Leilani Abels, MD of Thrive PR to discuss how this impact will be felt across the agency world, and what PR agencies can learn from the advertising models on the front of this.Read Dan's article here: https://mumbrella.com.au/what-will-happen-to-the-client-agency-relationship-in-a-post-retainer-world-575812Visit www.publicaddress.com.au to learn more about how Public Address can transform your media relations campaigns - taking out the hassle which we now associate with this part of PR.Visit www.pria.com.au to learn more about how the Public Relations Institute of Australia can help your career in public relations.

Public relations. As the many facets of the media and communications industry continue to converge, there are many who would tell you PR is doomed to fail. But with the federal government predicting that an extra 25,000 people will join the PR profession in Australia by 2019, surely there's more to the story.  The rapid growth of digital and social branded content has caused disruption across the PR sector, as traditional methods of communicating are replaced by modern techniques, data and analytics. This shift has brought with it many questions: What does the future of PR look like? What skills do PR professionals need to thrive in the modern industry? And why is there such grave concern for the future of this sector? This week on The CMO Show, Mark and JV are joined by Jennifer Muir, national president of the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA) and general manager at Primary Communication. With more than 20 years experience in the PR and communications landscape, Jenny brings fresh insight and new experiences to her role with PRIA, and to the future of the PR industry more broadly.

For the first time in Canadian history, a Prime Minister appointed a caucus that was 50 per cent female and 50 per cent male. When asked why he chose to make this bold statement he respond: because it is 2015. This moment of history prompted the hosts of Young PR Pros, Kristine D'Arbelles, Julia Kent and Ross Simmonds, to discuss gender and ethnic equality in the work place. We start the conversation with analyzing the current landscape. Ross says the best way to get more women in managing roles is to hire more women managers. These women become role models and create generations of aspiring women managers. Julia agreed, but warned about the dangers of filing quotas - i.e. hiring based on gender and not merit. We then chat about pay equality, which is a hot topic in world news. Ross suggests we should be open and transparent about pay. Organizations should share with all their employees what everyone makes, it doesn't have to be tied to an individual, but to a title or level in the organizations. This empowers employees to ask for a fair wage. Kristine notes that young professionals don't always have the skills to negotiate pay, yet they should. She suggest doing research and using tools to figure out a fair wage. Here are a few tools: A toolkit for woman seeking a raise from the New York Times. Globe and Mail lays out what a public relations professional should expect to make in Canada. The Public Relations Institute of Australia has a few suggested tools for professionals in Australia seeking a raise. Or try PayScale, a company that links individuals and businesses to the largest salary profile database in the world. Have you asked for a raise? What was your experience?
