To mark Hispanic Heritage Month, in this episode, six cancer experts discuss Latino representation in clinical trials, translational research, and healthcare professions. Hispanic and Latino people comprise nearly 20% of the U.S. population, but less than 6% of physicians nationwide identify as Hispanic. “The pipeline issue continues to be a huge issue for us,” said Amelie Ramirez, of UT Health San Antonio and Mays Cancer Center. “As our population continues to grow, in terms of the Latino population, we definitely need more [Latino physicians].” Since trust plays a huge role in recruiting participants, the dearth of Latinos in health care affects clinical trials and translational research, said Cruz-Correa, of the University of Puerto Rico and PanOncology Trials. “For our patients, for our communities, language is still important—that concordance between the physician that is telling you about the study and the patient's background.” Still, it's important to remember that Latinos are a very diverse group, who speak languages other than Spanish, said Carvajal-Carmona, of UC Davis. Latino people of the myriad ethnicities throughout the Americas have a variety of histories, cultures, and cancer risk factors, he said. And for Latino professionals in oncology, it's vital to continue making their presence known, said Edith Perez, of Mayo Clinic. “We are part of the population. We are part of the intellectual minds that exist in this nation. And we're here to help lead and collaborate.” Panelists included: Moderator: Ruben Mesa, president, Atrium Health Levine Cancer; executive director, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center Luis Carvajal-Carmona, professor, Auburn Community Cancer Endowed Chair in Basic Science, associate vice chancellor for the Office of Academic Diversity, University of California, Davis Marcia Cruz-Correa, lead investigator and director, Clinical & Translational Research, University of Puerto Rico Comprehensive Cancer Center; chief medical officer, PanOncology Trials; professor of medicine and biochemistry, University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine Edith Perez, professor emeritus, Mayo Clinic Amelie Ramirez, professor, director of the Institute for Health Promotion Research, and chair of the Department of Population Health Sciences, UT Health San Antonio; associate director of cancer outreach and engagement, Mays Cancer Center Yolanda Sanchez, director and CEO, University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center A transcript of this conversation is available on the Cancer History Project.

Perez-Irizarry was born and raised in a small town on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. He was not too fond of dentistry in his early age due to some bad experiences but after knowing more about our profession, he developed a keen interest in dentistry that made him decide to go to dental school. He graduated from college in 1982 with a Biology Degree and then attended the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine where he graduated in1986.  He began his professional duties as an associated dentist in a large clinic and later became an associated dentist to the president of the dental board Dr. Rafael Pagan. His wife is also a dentist, and together they established a successful group dental practice in his hometown area where he practiced for 14 years. In 1999 they moved to the Atlanta area where he has been working as a general dentist ever since. With over 35 years of experience Dr. Perez treats a wide variety of needs amongst his patients. A fluent Spanish speaker allows Dr. Perez to communicate efficiently with the Spanish speaking community. Outside of the office he enjoys photography as a hobby as well as cooking and expending time with his family. Dr. Perez and his wife have four children together. Their three sons are currently in Dental College of Georgia and his daughter is a devoted educator. Dr. Perez's philosophy: “I like to have a common sense approach to dentistry where prevention is the foundation to a healthier smile. I make every effort to provide services that satisfy patient's expectations on dental treatment. Communication between the patient and dentist is essential as there is a need for the patients to understand their actual oral condition to make the necessary changes to complete dental treatment, reestablish oral health and be able to maintain everything in excellent shape.” Dr. Perez has been continuously involved in community health clinics, community service and different disaster relief initiatives. Dr. Perez used to host a weekly radio show in his hometown on dental health issues providing orientation and advice on dental issues to the general population. He is a member of the Hispanic Dental Association. He served in the Puerto Rico Dental Associations  presiding different commissions including Young Dentists Commission, Continuing Dental Education, organized community outreach programs as well as a member of the board of directors and as a member of the executive committee for several years. His latest interest is to look for ways to share his experiences with the younger dentist joining our profession. Helping them by providing some insights and information that may help them with their future decisions.    FFS Podcast Promotional Links:  ONLY $397: Dental Membership Master Course with Dr. Chris Phelps www.membershipmastercourse.com Dental Membership Direct www.dentalmembershipdirect.com Dental Financing Direct www.dentalfinancingdirect.com   About Dr. Sonny Spera Dr. Sonny Spera graduated from Union Endicott High School in 1981. Earth Activist, Ardelle Ferrer shares about the regeneration of the Ceiba Tree on Vieques, Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. She also speaks about the creation of a park around the ancient Ceiba Tree and the meaning it holds for the community and the land.Excerpt from: An Ancient Ceiba Tree Blooms Once Again After Puerto Rico’s Devastating Storms A protest movement, known among locals as “the struggle,” finally ousted the Navy in 2003. Four years later, Ferrer and others started La Ceiba Community Project to remove trash and debris from the grassy area around the ancient tree.“She brought us all together to restore that space, which is now used by the locals all the time,” Ferrer said. “It’s a symbol of hope that we can continue, that things may get hard but if we stand strong we can make it.”Today, the ceiba is the centerpiece of a 51-acre coastal park where endangered manatees, green turtles, and brown pelicans live. On rainy days, water pools in the bowl-shaped crannies between the tree’s twisted limbs, attracting tiny crabs and wild horse, who drink the rainwater.Nature is Ardelle’s artistic muse. Her life is colored by evolutionary change, as is her art. Ardelle’s artistic history has and will continue to eternally emphasize the protection of our natural environment. Her deep connectivity to nature started as a child and has continued to be inspired by Puerto Rico’s natural wonders, where she first learned how to connect with the trees of El Yunque rainforest and the raw elements of nature.Since 2007, Ardelle has dedicated endless community-based efforts to the preservation of a 400-year-old Ceiba tree site, located in the heart of El Parque de Ceiba in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Ardelle is the principal force promoting the legacy of the sacred ceiba tree and the primary organizer of projects that encourage the youth of Vieques to absorb the wealth of knowledge the ceiba tree has to offer to the local and global community. The goal of the community outreach project is to incorporate art, culture, nature, and spirituality, in a way that emphasizes the conservation of the land of our ancestors, the sacredness of the tree, and its teachings.Ardelle received her BFA, Magna Cum Laude, from the Puerto Rico School of Fine Art and postgraduate studies at the Urban Glass studio in New York. She has been awarded several prizes for artistic excellence and her art includes multiple performances, expositions, symposiums, stained and fused glass, sculptures, public murals, installations, and monumental works of the ephemeral.Support the show (https://www.natureevolutionaries.com/donations)

Ben Eiler is a bond trader and First Southern Securities partner. Ben embodies more than 15 years of industry experience specializing in providing fixed income solutions to individuals, financial advisors and fee based money managers. When asked of Ben, Eric Shahinian of Camac Partners says “My firm has invested in municipal bonds with Ben at First Southern since I believe 2013. We invested in many of the municipal bonds they mentioned, and found each of them to be quite mispriced and cheap. Even the ones I passed on, for various reasons, they ended up being right. I find that their knowledge of the space is top-notch, they have a great work ethic, they are scrappy and do the diligence. They are also operating in an area of the market that they are well above the competition in my mind. Since 2014 we have invested in their Phorcys fund (were the day 1 investor) and I plan to keep our investment there for a very long time. Its been a positive experience; performance has been good, and more importantly they have made money for the right reasons (their thesis being correct).” I need say no more. The University of Puerto Rico School of Business Student Alumni Association is proud to present bond trader Ben Eiler.
