Episode #256: Michael Haack, a long-time advocate and policy expert, outlines the long and arduous journey of the Burma Act from its inception to appropriation. The Burma Act, a legislative framework guiding US policy toward Myanmar, required relentless lobbying to secure the necessary funding, ultimately resulting in a significant $167 million appropriation, a notable increase in a period of general budget cuts.Haack highlights the power of grassroots activism. The concerted efforts of local constituencies, churches, and advocacy groups played a pivotal role in influencing key legislators like Mitch McConnell, demonstrating the impact of community engagement on foreign policy. Despite the systemic challenges, the increased funding reflects a robust commitment to supporting Myanmar's democratic aspirations and humanitarian needs.Concerning the multifaceted nature of US aid, Haack offers a nuanced view of the interplay between policy, power, and the pursuit of global justice, urging continued grassroots efforts to sustain and enhance US support for Myanmar. In the end, Haack is cautiously hopeful that US funding towards Burma will continue to increase, albeit with a caveat that if Donald Trump is elected, overall foreign aid will dip across the board. He also remarks on the US's gradual shift from a Burma policy that had been driven almost entirely around the person of Aung San Suu Kyi, and which now relies increasingly on the voices of ethnic communities who have settled in the US. “That opens the possibility of a really different way of looking at the conflict, and I think one that is more realistic,” he says. “Whatever you think about Suu Kyi, she's literally one of something like 56 million people. We have the basis to drive a US-Myanmar policy that's much more realistic and much more robust, and the expansion does show that the US is paying attention to Myanmar.”

“To care for what we know requires care for what we don't, the world's lives dark in the soil, dark in the dark.” “Forbearance is the first care we give to what we do not know. We live by lives we don't intend, lives that exceed our thoughts and needs, outlast our designs, staying by passing through, surviving again and again the risky passages from ice to warmth, dark to light.” - Wendell Berry, A Small Porch I care deeply about the natural world. That's why I do this podcast. And of course when I use the words “natural world” these aren't exactly the right words. They're just the poor abbreviated metaphor of the English language for something Wendell Berry refers to elsewhere in A Small Porch as “the presence of the world being made, a fabric of interdepending wonders, moment by moment completed in beauty, leaf shadows on light leaves moving.” The Forbearance Berry mentions describes what it looks like to love in a world where we know so little. It reminds us that our actions have consequences much bigger and that last much longer than what we intend or even know, and the preeminent gift we can give to what we love is forbearance – patient self-control, restraint, avoidance of urge fulfilment and impulsive action. When I first fell in love with wine and developed a taste for my favorite grape, I wanted to find some perfect terroir that rivaled the Crus of France and grow the worlds greatest version of my favorite thing. I'm really lucky I've never been rich enough to do all the stupid things I wanted to do with the earth. Having said that, I have lived long enough and been fortunate enough to finally get access to a piece of beautiful land. I'm also fortunate that this land came into my life after my ecological consciousness had been awakened and begun to be educated. I remember walking the land for the first time and thinking how absurd an idea it is that land can be “owned.” I remember how seeing the roll and slope of the land, walking its forests and meadows, made my heart beat faster. I fell in love with it, and this love made me terrified to harm it. It is something in itself, I realized. Not something for me to calculate as an asset, not a commodity to harvest. As Berry says, “The conversion of trees to wood to money, which is all 'the economy' asks, is limitlessly the mistake of arrogance, for it is the forest, not the tree, that is the source of economic good; the forest as the whole community of itself, its lives living as the gifts of lives lived.” This episode is the first of a two part conversation I had with Nicolas Haack. You may remember Nicolas from the episode just a couple weeks ago, as he was the consultant for the vitiforestry project implemented at Staffelter Hof, the oldest winery in the world. Nicolas is one of the founders of Triebwerk, an agroforestry consulting company in Germany, and vitiforestry projects are one of the kinds of agroforestry that he helps implement. So, naturally, I had to talk to him some more. This first part is a conversation about engaging in a process of forbearance before embarking on any viticultural or agricultural implementation. We talk about the kinds of questions to ask, and analysis that's advised, before acquiring a piece of land and altering it to achieve your goals. There are many valuable insights scattered throughout the conversation, but I hope the most important thing you takeaway is questioning your goals. Is what you want what's actually best for a given place? As Berry says, “We must acknowledge first that it is dark, and we are blind by sight.” https://www.triebwerk-landwirtschaft.de/ Support this episode by subscribing via patreon. Michael Haack sheds light on the intricate world of US sanctions and their impact on Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprises (MOGE) and the wider Myanmar military regime. Haack, a familiar voice on the podcast, has spent two decades advocating for Myanmar, playing a pivotal role in the passage of the Burma Act.These latest sanctions, as Haack explains, cut off US financial services to MOGE, affecting loans and transfers, which may seem minor but actually have a profound impact. MOGE, being a vital source of foreign exchange for the military, deals primarily in US dollars, making these sanctions more significant than they initially appear. He believes one positive effect is that they will make it harder for the regime to acquire dollars for weapons. However, he says they are ultimately, not a game changer, contrasting them with the EU's more potent sanctions, which compelled even China to divert funds intended for MOGE into escrow. He emphasizes that US sanctions were drafted with Thailand's interests in mind, allowing Myanmar to continue selling gas to its eastern neighbor. Haack hints at the US prioritizing its relations with Thailand over opposing Myanmar's regime, and also notes the influence of corporate lobbying.Haack also points out that the history of US sanctions includes targeting the garment industry, which disproportionately affected vulnerable workers, and how such sanctions often serve as moral victories rather than practical solutions.Haack closes by criticizing what he calls the “semiotic loop,” in which good news from Myanmar is amplified without meaningful change. He highlights the challenge of navigating Myanmar's “low information environment” and the influence of diverse groups, from religious organizations to corporations, in shaping US decisions. Haack's insights reveal the complexities of international sanctions and their implications for Myanmar's ongoing struggle for democracy.

What does being a good ally look like? In a new Perspective, authors Dr. Karla Haack (Merck), Dr. Austin Robinson (Auburn University), Dr. Dexter Lee (Howard University College of Medicine), Dr. Keisa Mathis (University of North Texas Health Science Center), and Dr. Junie Paula Warrington (University of Mississippi Medical Center) discuss how the American Physiological Society (APS) can promote Black physiologists and support them in the challenges they face. The authors sat down with The AJP-Heart and Circ Podcast for a wide-ranging interview at the cross-section of social justice and science. The authors feel that APS has a unique opportunity as an international organization to be at the forefront of supporting Black physiologists and boosting the success of underrepresented minority APS members. As the authors note, Black students are often first-generation college students, and therefore mentoring and K-12 physiology outreach are critically important. Robinson et al. discuss issues around the underrepresentation of Black physiologists at the faculty level, as well as challenges with access to pilot funding to support Black early career researchers. The authors discuss many actionable steps, such as inviting Black physiologists to be scientific co-investigators and co-authors on studies, as well as partnering with Historically Black Colleges and Universities to help build a pipeline of future Black physiologists. The authors take-home message? Don't underestimate the power of being an ally and using your voice to amplify the voices of Black physiologists. As Dr. Junie Paula Warrington stated, “One person at a time, we can make a huge impact.” Austin T. Robinson, Nathaniel D. M. Jenkins, Sofia O. Sanchez, Karla K. V. Haack, Dexter L. Lee, Keisa W. Matt was born in Phoenix AZ but grew up and graduated an Iowa boy, spending his prep years at Dowling Catholic High School. Kluver competed in travel sports as kids against Matt, who happens to be one of Jon Wiz's best friends from Dowling. Kluver and Matt would later play in Shrine Bowl together before heading off to college. Matt was a talented athlete with some interest as a WR but happened into a boom of Punting interest his junior year. This odd skill landed him a scholarship at Arizona State University where he would go on to start for 3 years and play next to college great Zane Gonzalez. Matt was picked up as a free agent after graduating and has now spent 6 seasons in the NFL with 4 teams. David Haack, Owner of Tailored Advisory Services, dons his bowtie and teacher cap to give us a history lesson in how nursing homes came to be a harsh place in the 1700s and how it's transformed into the hospitality-focused senior living industry we know today. We learn how we can take the findings from the senior living transition over the last 30 years and apply it to our current staffing difficulties to gain and retain quality talent. A lot of that has to do with living and working with intention and purpose. Purpose is something we know is much needed for our seniors, but also for our staff.

F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
Most photographers are given the advice to specialize in something in order to make it as a photographer. On the surface, this seems to make sense as it allows one to become an expert and to become known for one thing; however, it might not be the best advice to follow, especially if you live in a smaller town. This week I had the pleasure of speaking with Viktoria Haack - a photographer living in Salmon Arm, British Columbia. Viktoria has chosen not to specialize in any one form of photography and has instead chosen to see herself as a generalist, which has done wonders for her photography career. On this week's episode of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen Podcast, we discuss: How Viktoria fell in love with photography while living on a 300-acre island for ten years. How living on an island helped Viktoria hone in on what types of subjects interest her as a photographer. How social media has played a role in her progression as a photographer. How Viktoria uses social media now to advance her business offerings. How Viktoria has chosen to be a generalist and how that has worked for her. How photographing people has helped Viktoria round out her business. The idea of gardening not architecture. Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World. Viktoria's approach to making photographs. And a lot more! Other topics/links discussed on the podcast this week: Viktoria's workshop offerings. Support the podcast on Patreon.
