To kick off Black History Month, we are buzzing about Melrose Plaza in the historically African-American community of Northwest Roanoke. It's located in a once thriving Black neighborhood that was decimated in the 1950s and 1960s by discriminatory redlining and eminent domain.Last time on our show, BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill talked with E.B. Smith, the new executive director of the Harrison Museum of African American Culture, which is considering a move from downtown Roanoke, Virginia, to Melrose Plaza.Today Michael chats with Zenith Barrett, vice-president of advancement at Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, which is coordinating the $30 million Melrose Plaza project. Melrose Plaza will feature anchor facilities to create positive change and address the community's most vital needs – affordable food, healthcare, education for adults, and financial independence.

Why would we spend an entire show talking about diapers? Because diapers represent a whole lot more than just keeping a baby dry. So much so that there's a Roanoke, Virginia nonprofit called Huddle Up Moms that just received among the largest grants ever awarded by the Roanoke Women's Foundation: $100,000 to create a diaper bank for low-income moms and child caregivers in Southwest Virginia. This cause is near and dear to the heart of BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill's because one of the first BUZZ episodes produced in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, starred the nonprofit Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank. So today he talks with Kim Butterfield, Director of Education for Huddle Up Moms, about how the nonprofit landed the grant … and what comes next.

Dear friends, today I need to ask for special prayer again. This morning Edith and I will be driving back up to Roanoke Virginia to be there for our little grandson Luke, and Kimberly and Chris. Luke is presently back in PICU at RMH because another infection has developed. This morning at 7:30 he is scheduled to go back in for emergency surgery. The neurosurgeons will be removing the shunts and all the tubing from the brain to the stomach that is draining the excess fluid from around the brain. They will replace that with temporary tubing that will continue to drain the fluid externally. He will be treated for the infection and after a week or so they will repeat the surgery to replace the shunts and all the tubing. We are so thankful for all your continued prayers now and over these many months. They mean everything to us! We will keep you updated, or you can click on the link at the bottom of this chat for more information from Kimberly's Facebook page. For the past several days we have been talking about genuine divine joy! A joy that you will never find in this world or in the things in this world. This morning especially, I am so glad that I can still experience joy despite the circumstances or situation we are presently experiencing. Mary and Elizabeth lived in very dark days and would face tremendous challenges in the lives of their special sons. Elizabeth's son, John the Baptist would have his life ended by being beheaded by King Herod. Mary would stand at the foot of an old rugged cross and watch her son, Jesus, be crucified in the most cruel, inhumane, sadistic, brutal way possible by the Roman soldiers. She would have to listen to the mocking of priest and people around the cross. Yet as we read and listen to Elizabeth's and Mary's rejoicing in these verses, we find the source of real genuine joy! Life might seem very unfair at times, and can be very hard and difficult, but by God's grace through His Son Jesus Christ we can still experience peace and joy if we only by faith believe! For the next several days we will be looking at the specific reasons that Mary was rejoicing with song in Luke 1:46-56. It is pleasant to think of Mary as a singer. Did ever mortal voice sing a sweeter song than this? Her joy was holy, deep, and divine! Mary experienced spiritual joy. She sang, "My spirit has rejoiced" (v. 47). The tidings of the grace of God, in the gift of His Son, filled her soul with joy and made her spirit sing. The Gospel of God, His Good News in Jesus Christ is intended to reach the very spirit of man, to touch and revive the innermost spring of His being. My friend the lip songs of the hypocrite and the sentimental songs of the world never penetrate to the needy spirit in man. Mary experienced joy in God. "My spirit hath rejoiced in God" (v. 47). God revealed Himself, and He was known to Mary in the gift of His Son, and so known and believed that her spirit rejoiced in God. It cannot be said of us that we know God if in our spirits we do not rejoice in Him. Paul put it this way in Romans 5:11, “And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.” The joy that is in God is pure and blameless. It is divine and eternal and never changes! I trust today that you will remember and meditate on God's love through Jesus Christ and experience a song of divine joy despite your circumstances! God bless!

Kyle Edgell started drawing caricatures in a bar. For fun. She never considered the talent she had to capture a likeness and connect with people a product to be “sold”…until a life-changing request to draw at a company picnic as entertainment allowed her to gift the drawings to her subjects and be paid for it. Her insight and ability to encourage others through her art and humor grew into a career that has spanned over 20 years. Edgell has a gift for presentation that instigates laughter, whether in a homeless shelter or attending conferences at 5 star Resort Hotels. Her philosophy of life and art has helped her meet the daily and unexpected challenges of cancer, the death of loved ones and ADD. She now creates multifaceted presentations that incorporate live drawing, speaking, message visualization that will help your team translate obstacles into opportunities. When optimism is rekindled using humor and creativity it will inspire practical strategies that will energize your corporate culture. There's a lot of debate surrounding the legacy of slavery and segregation. Some may even question whether there's still active racism. But if you happen to buzz down to Roanoke's Taubman Museum of Art or Harrison Museum of African American Culture, you can see how discriminatory real estate practices from the past continue to impact Black Americans today. And that is due to a remarkable exhibit that both nonprofit museums are co-hosting: David Ramey: Gainsboro Road and Beyond. Psalm 107:23-28 23 Those who go down to the sea in ships, Who do business on great waters, 24 They see the works of the LORD, And His wonders in the deep. 25 For He commands and raises the stormy wind, Which lifts up the waves of the sea. 26 They mount up to the heavens, They go down again to the depths; Their soul melts because of trouble. 27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits' end. 28 Then they cry out to the LORD in their trouble, And He brings them out of their distresses. Today I am back in Sneads Ferry and able to do at least one Pastor's Chat and give an update on Luke. First thank you for all your prayers in all our travels this past week from North Carolina to Florida, from Florida to Virginia, and yesterday from Virginia back to North Carolina. Edith stayed in Roanoke to be with Kimberly, Chris and Luke. As you probably already know, about a week ago Luke had the shunt surgically removed from his brain, and also the drain tube that went down to his intestine because of an infection in it. Luke is scheduled to have surgery this morning at 9am to replace a new shunt and drain line. This is a very difficult surgery because of his size and how everything must be placed. But we have a great team of doctors and nurses who will be doing this surgery. Also, we have hundreds of dear friends like you praying for Luke and we sure covet your prayers for him this morning! We will keep you updated later today. I thought it was so appropriate that these are the next verses in Psalm 107. Sometimes in life we feel like we have come to “wit's end corner”! All hope is lost and all we can do is look up! But again in this situation, when “we cry out to the LORD in our trouble, He hears and brings us out and of our distresses”. Today, our Great Savior and LORD is still gathering His redeemed from the east, the west, the north and the south to come and worship Him! I trust you are hearing His voice and responding to His invitation “to come to Him” for the needed rest and hope that you can only find in His salvation and strength! And please continue to pray for Luke today! And for traveling mercies for me this afternoon, as I will be traveling back to Roanoke Va after preaching in our morning service at Friendly Community Church in Burgaw NC. God bless!
Sunday November 19 to 26 Psalm 107:17-22 20 He sent His word and healed them, And delivered them from their destructions. 21 Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men! 22 Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare His works with rejoicing. Happy Thanksgiving Week! Because of my schedule this week I will not be making my daily Pastor Chats the rest of this week. This afternoon I will be flying down to Florida to help move one of my grandchildren from Florida back to Roanoke Virginia on Monday. I will be driving a moving van, towing a car for over 900 miles. I covet your prayers for safe travels. My wife and I will spend the rest of the week with our children and grandchildren in Virginia celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday with them. I hope to resume the chats next Sunday the 26th. I am so thankful for all my friends and everyone who “tunes in” to this daily chat with me seeking to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and live for Him every day! This is a good week to remember that Psalm 107 begins with an exhortation for us to give thanks! Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever” (v. 1). The rest of the chapter gives us several reasons why we should be thankful. We have already mentioned two of them. Four times in this chapter we read: “Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, And He saved them out of their distresses.” And four times we are told: “Oh, that men would give thanks to the LORD for His goodness, And for His wonderful works to the children of men!” In verses 4-9, we are described as someone who is lost and wandering in the wilderness in a desolate condition. We are hungry and thirsty and in a state of distress and hopelessness. But we cry out to the LORD and He delivers us out of our distress! For this we should be thankful! In verses 10-16, we are described as someone who has rebelled against God and have despised His Word and His counsel. We become slaves in bondage to our sins, the flesh and the devil. We fall down and there is no one to help us! But again, when we cry out to the LORD, He hears us and delivers us out of our distress! For this we should be thankful! Now in verses 17-22, we are described as someone who has not only wandered and lost in the wilderness, in bondage to our sin because of our rebellion, but we have now lost our health because of our foolish living and our sins. This almost sounds like someone who has become addicted to drugs and alcohol and has lost their appetite, wasted away to nothing and at the “gate of death”, about to die. But once again, “we cry out to the LORD in our trouble, and He saves us out of our distresses”! I love what it says in verse 20. “He sent His Word and healed them”! The only place in the world we can find true healing for our soul, our mental state, our emotions, is in the Word of God! The Word of God is the Water of Life! The Word of God is the Bread of Life! The Word of God is the Living Word of Life Who is Jesus Christ! John 1:1-2 tells us that: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.” Then in verse 14, John proclaimed, “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory…” God sent His Word, Jesus Christ to bring true healing to our weary souls and set us free from our sin! Jesus Himself proclaimed: “And if the Son shall set you free, you shall be free indeed' (John 8:36). So, today and all this Thanksgiving Week, may the LORD help us to: “sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, and declare His works with rejoicing. Have a wonderful day and a great week! God bless!
Before we look at Psalm 106 today, I wanted to share with you that I'm in Roanoke Virginia this morning to participate in a memorial service for a dear friend, Don Parker. Please be in prayer for his dear wife, Jane Parker and all the family and friends as they celebrate his life and his faith that touched so many of us! Don loved the Lord and his wife and family faithfully over the many years. Don was not a “upfront” sort of person, but you could count on him to be faithful and loyal! I'm convinced that I'm probably alive today because of Don's willingness to help me any time I ask, especially to cut down large trees on my property over the years. He was the expert that could tell me exactly how a tree would fall and the best way to do the cut. I am convinced that he could sharpen the chain saw blades faster and better than anyone else in the world! Don has been a dear loyal friend to me over these past 27 plus years and he will be greatly missed by all. But we are also assured of his salvation through Jesus Christ by his life of faith and testimony and we know we will see him again in heaven one day! Now in Psalm 106, if you want to get the full story of the history that we find there, I would encourage you to read and study the Old Testament books of Exodus and Numbers. If you want to know and understand the spiritual applications of this chapter, I would encourage you to read and study the New Testament book of Hebrews, especially chapters three and four. Another passage in the New Testament that also uses this history and how we can apply it to our lives in dealing with the temptation to be disobedient is 1 Corinthians 10:1-13. By the way, the very first verse in the Bible that I memorized is 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, ..." In this passage we are also told that “Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." (1 Corinthians 10:6-7). Today we are looking at the verses in Psalm 106:28-33. These two events recorded in this passage occurred toward the end of Israel's march through the wilderness, and both of them illustrate the high cost of willful disobedience to the Lord. The failure at Baal Peor is described in Numbers 25, but read Numbers 22-24 to get the background. The king of Moab hired the prophet Baalam to curse the nation of Israel, but God turned his curses into blessings (Deut. 23:5; Neh. 13:2; see Psalm 109:28). But Baalam knew how to trap Israel: he suggested that the king act like a good neighbor and invite the Jewish tribal leaders to share a feast with the Moabites. This would be a religious feast, of course, which meant eating meat dedicated to demons and dead people and cohabiting with cult prostitutes. Once more, the people of God yielded to their fleshly desires and tasted the wrath of God, and 24,000 people died (Num. 25:9). The plague would have claimed more lives, but Phinehas, the son of the high priest, killed a Jewish man and his Moabite partner as they arrogantly sinned in the camp of Israel. Remember that the "The wages of sin is death" (Rom. 6:23). The second demonstration of carnality was seen in Moses, not a sin of the flesh but of the spirit: he became proud and angry and took for himself the glory that belonged only to the Lord (Num. 20:1-13). Provoked by the people, the "pride of life" possessed Moses and he lost his temper and spoke rash words that offended the Lord (Psalm 78:40; Isa. 63:10; 1 John 2:15-17). This sin cost Moses the privilege of leading the people into the Promised Land (Deut. 3:23-29). Even today, our disobedience to the known will of God will always be very costly to us and to those around us! God bless!

Today, before we start a new chapter in Psalms, I wanted to take this opportunity to share a plea for help for human trafficking victims. As you read about and study the life of the Lord Jesus in the Gospels, it is very obvious that He loved and cared for children. The above passage in Matthew 18 reflects that love and care for them. Some of the harshest words that Jesus utter were for anyone who would abuse children. It is hard to believe but we have a major problem in America with human trafficking. Every day, men, women, and children are being exploited and sold for sex across the United States. Many are unaware they are being trafficked. In a recent year there were 13,594 calls by victims to the National Human Trafficking Hotline. The authorities tell us that 99% of victims are never identified. That 14 is the average age of entry into trafficking in the U.S. And 80% of survivors are re-victimized if they don't have a safe place to go. I was privileged to be the senior pastor of Rainbow Forest Baptist Church in the Roanoke Virginia area for over 25 years. As pastor there I had the opportunity to meet some very amazing people. One of them, and at the top of my list, was a man by the name of Keith Farmer. His family joined our ministry and became some of my dearest friends. Keith was a local businessman who developed a heart for young people at risk in the inner city of Roanoke and he got involved by doing something about their needs. He started a downtown ministry called Straight Street. The mission and purpose of Straight Street is to provide a positive Christian environment where at-risk youth can go and obtain the necessary skills and training needed to mature and to discover God's Divine plan for their lives. You can learn more about it here: https://straightstreet.org/ I'll never forget when Keith came to me with a broken heart for human trafficking victims and said that the Lord laid it on his heart to do something to help these precious young people. Keith had already built a great network of community leaders in the local and state government, law enforcement, FBI, Homeland Securities, Public School officials, and the juvenile probation court workers. He not only was involved as a leader in our church, but he also connected with other church leaders throughout the community. After much prayer and research, Keith opened a new ministry called The Lampstand to get directly involved in rescuing and ministering to human trafficking victims. Their website is: www.thelampstandva.org The Lampstand provides juvenile victims across Virginia with much-needed resources and a safe home for girls ages 12-17. In addition to the safe home, The Lampstand provides outreach services. They also offer educational resources and onsite training for area school districts. The Lampstand will be hosting their annual Night of Hope fundraiser tomorrow night, Saturday, October 28. This event is crucial for raising awareness and funds for the human trafficking ministry. Their goal this year is $400,000. There has been a special matching gift of $100,000 made available to encourage others to give. Today, my special plea for help is to encourage you to get involved with this wonderful outreach by giving a donation that will be matched, and that will go directly to further their mission to empower the lives of those vulnerable to and affected by sexual exploitation. You can make your donation either directly to their ministry website: www.thelampstandva.org or even through my website: https://www.pmiministries.org/ Just hit the donate button and click down to “Human Trafficking Rescue Support”. Please hit share to help repost this chat today and let's get as much support for Keith and The Lampstand as we can these next few days so they can continue to minister to these special young children that Jesus loves! Remember Jesus said, “Inasmuch has you help the least of these, you have done it unto Me” (Matthew 25:40). God bless!

I apologize for any confusion. Music Credit Music by OYStudio from Pixabay Episode Transcript (continued on Episode Page): I'm Scott and I'm Melissa and we are the Sunshine Travelers. No matter where you fall along that journey, get ready to hear about our first hand experiences as we visit some of the most amazing places on earth. Today we thought it would be good take step back and introduce ourselves as the host of this podcast. Learn about how we started with our travel adventures, where it has taken us, and what is next as we truly embrace our passion for travel. Pack your bag and journey back to the beginning as you learn more about us as your hosts. It seems kind of strange to do an introduction several episodes in on a podcast. I guess we were just eager to get started and had some great content we wanted to lead off with. Yeah, this is something we have been discussing for a long time and we were gearing up for our big bucket list trip to the Galapagos. We had originally wanted to record some of that content while on our trip, but it just didn't work out the way we had planned. But here we are and there is no better time than the present to do a little introduction. We are Scott and Melissa Barronton and we live in the Sunshine State of Florida. We've lived here for almost a year now but spent most of the rest of our lives near Atlanta, GA. Anyone who knows travel has made a trip or two through Hartsfield Jackson airport. The busiest airport in the world. That is exactly where my travel journeys began. Growing up my mom worked for the airlines and we could hop on a plane and go almost anywhere in the world. At the spur of the moment, we'd pack a bag, head to the airport and then decide where we wanted to go. We had one limitation - what flights were available. If we had the wrong clothes, no big deal, we'd take care of that when we got there. I wouldn't say travel was a passion for me back then. It took me to some really cool places and left me yearning for others. As a child we attempted several times to go to Hawaii. My parents and brother had been before and I heard all of the stories. Unfortunately for me, everytime we tried to we would always get bumped in California. Melissa thought that I was crazy because I didn't like Disneyland when we first got married. For me it was a consolation prize for not getting to go to Hawaii. I know, totally a first world problem. Fast forward to today and we both really enjoy Disney, and you will hear a lot about that as we travel there frequently with our children and grandchildren. How about you Melissa? Another reason that we are the Sunshine Travelers though is that we have a joke that it is always sunny or at least not raining when we travel to a destination, even if we do want it to rain or be a little cooler, like in London for example. Growing up my parents were teachers and so we spent a good amount of time in the summers going on camping trips. We would go both to familiar places as well as on new adventures. One place we went to a lot was the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville or various Georgia State parks. We would also go to beaches in Florida and North and South Carolina like the Outer Banks and would have adventures riding car ferries to get there. As we got older we would take longer road trips - such as several weeks going up the coast from Georgia to Maine stopping at lots of sights along the way. I had never been out of the country though until after we got married. Also my first international trip was with you to Germany to visit friends of your family that began as a student exchange with your brother. And thirty something years later I still try and visit our friends when in or near Frankfurt. In our daily lives, I have been working remotely for global companies for about 8-9 years now. I have employees all over the world and so it is quite common for me to travel internationally as part of my work. About five years ago our youngest son was old enough that he could stay home or with family members that lived just down the street and Melissa started traveling with me. At first mostly in the US, but then eventually on overseas travel as well. While I was working during the day, she would take small trips exploring out by bus, train or Uber taking in all of the sights that each location had to offer One of the first trips I got to tag along on was to Costa Rica. On this first trip with you we stayed in San Juan and I was able to see a few museums there - such as the Jade museum but I also went to a spa one day. You had never done anything in Costa Rica except go to the office and to dinner so thankfully when local people take you, they will usually go somewhere with a view or to a nice local restaurant. So The next time we went a few days early and rented a car and spent the weekend close to San Juan seeing the volcano at the National Park and staying in an Eco resort. We were then able to hire a driver to take me from the hotel to experience a zip line, because that's not something you would enjoy and then he took me to a coffee plantation. I also got to go to Las Vegas for the first time tagging along on a work trip even though you had been several times before. So since you were working and when you had been before you didn't really get to experience the area, I think this is really where I started figuring out how to research an area and what to do there using Pinterest to find blog posts, Trip Advisor and google maps to save locations etc. I think the most fun for me was going early with you or staying over a weekend (at our own expense of course) and take you places in the location especially when you had been there several times. We need to back up a little though because before this we took our kids on trips when they were younger for long weekends or vacations and we tried to take one trip as a couple per year just us and bigger ones on special anniversaries. Scott, do you want to talk about some of these trips? At first we starting just tent camping and we would go for weekends locally or once we camped along the Blue Ridge Parkway from Roanoke Va to Ashville NC We talked a little about this in Episode 1, creating a travel bucket list Later we bought a pull behind camper and took a weeklong trip to Kentucky - seeing the corvette museum and up to Louisville to the Louisville slugger museum and the Kentucky Derby Mixed in we took our kids to Disney a few times as well As they got older, we decided that we wanted to go on some bigger trips and were able to take them to Hawaii as our kids got older and we were able, we started to plan some bigger trips with them in the summer such as Hawaii and then back to Europe when our daughter graduated from high school. One thing that we are passionate about is married couples taking trips together without their kids, once a year. and it doesn't have to be far but just to reconnect and recharge and spend time together. We have always been fortunate that our kids stayed with family but if you know someone and are able to help watch their kids to allow them to do this, I would highly encourage it. for our 5th anniversary we did a long weekend in Charleston,SC for our 10th anniversary - a cruise to the Bahamas (our 1st) For our 15th anniversary - we went to Mexico for the 1st time. We stayed at an all inclusive, which was very nice but I think we were eager to see more of the area and ended up booking a day tour for jet skiing and snorkeling and shopping and dining in Old Town Cancun For our 20th anniversary we were able to take a trip to St John. This is a place we really loved and are anxious to be able to return here this year IN between these bigger years we would go away for a weekend to the mountains in the fall or sometimes even just more of a local staycation where we just got away from the everyday and this brings us to the big trip that we were able to take which coincided with our 25th anniversary - a trip of a lifetime really… Which was… our trip to Europe between jobs We are going to do a whole episode on this soon but we spent 6 weeks traveling in Europe We planned this trip in Aprilish time frame for a June 10th departure the first 12 days was a Mediterranean cruise on Holland America then Italy from Rome to the Amalfi Coast 5 of the Greek Cyclades Islands Athens - which is where we were for our anniversary we finished the trip in the UK for a friend's wedding and then in Bath and the Cotswolds before returning home …. more in another episode so now our travels are a mix of business (with pleasure) and then just pleasure trips like the Galapagos (which we talked about in detail in Episode 2) and an upcoming trip to Puerto Rico and St John. Right now we are: Planning for Safari next year Our goal is still to Visit a new country every year but We don't plan things way far in advance so if other opportunities come up, we want to be able to jump on them Melissa: yes because our bucket list is long so when an opportunity arrises, it is likely that it is on the list So now you know a little more about us as your hosts on this journey. We hope you enjoyed this episode and will find some inspiration for your next trip or perhaps this is something that you want to add to your bucket list. Most importantly, subscribe to our podcast, leave us a review, and share it with your friends to help them catch the travel bug, especially anyone who is traveling to Equador and the Galapagos. You never know, they may become your greatest travel companion.
