We've done it: we've brought on Rob Zacny -- host of (among many other things) A More Civilized Age: A Star Wars Podcast -- to dissect and attempt to make sense of the rules of technology in the Star Wars universe. Join us as we consider questions such as: What exactly is it that comes out of a lightsaber? Is there a bathroom in the X-wing? How many Imperial officers it takes to fire a giant laser? Does hyperspace make any sense at all? And is there room in this podcast to discuss droid liberation? (At least that last question has a definitive answer: yes, of course.) Support the Pod! Rob Zacny, some would say, is a man of taste. And as any man of taste would be, he's incredibly discerning, especially when it comes to his Audio Equipment. Join Ren and Patrick as their whisked away on a tale of audio shops, conspiracies (!?), and audio speaker maintenance. After the break, Ren checked out Gundam Evolution, a new character based team FPS that has surprisingly good Mech-feel. Then she says some objectively wrong things about DOTA 2 that really made this producer question her judgment. Patrick has to address one point of clownification, er, clarification before our NORCO spoilercast drops later this week on Waypoint Plus, and then the crew takes a dive into the question bucket, where we learn that yes, in fact, Renata can be wrong (see: previous DOTA 2 statements).Discussed: Rob Zacny's Audio Saga 1:51, Gundam Evolution 51:54, NORCO 1:20:07, Gettysburg 1:26:04, The Question Bucket 1:28:08 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The crew have been having some computer issues, where for some reason or another their computers won't sleep correctly. I think they should probably stop giving them coffee right before bed, but apparently it has something to do with rogue usb devices. Patrick, Ren and Cado then continue their talk of Elden Ring, and consider where different people can find the Role Playing in a RPG video game. After the break, Rob takes us on a journey of discovery in Gran Turismo 7, where the cars are beautiful and Rob's Racing Wheel driving is not.Discussed: Elden Ring 19:54, Elden Ring Quest Spoilers 45:02 - 46:31, Gran Turismo 7 51:13, Announcements and Outro 1:24:22 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
We have special guest Matthew Gault on pod today to talk about Horizon: Forbidden West. He and Patrick have both put time into it, but they're both starting to experience fatigue around this particular open world design philosophy. If what you've wanted is a prettier, bigger Horizon: Zero Dawn though, this game seems made for you. After the break, Cado puts the end cap on Pokemon Legends: Arceus, confirming his suspicions that the narrative doesn't satisfyingly address the conflict between colonizers and indigenous people that they've based their story on. Then there's a quick dive into the question bucket for some deliberations over being a "Rob Zacny type," accidental boat purchases, and video game branded jeeps.Discussed: Horizon: Forbidden West 12:53, Pokemon Legends Arceus 1:10:38, Spoilers for final mission in Arceus 1:14:24 - 1:16:22, The Question Bucket 1:27:10 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Rowan is rejoined by Rob Zacny and Christy Admiraal for a discussion of 2012's SKYFALL. Rowan is very skeptical of James Bond, but loved half of this and hated the other half. See why she calls it the most morally reprehensible film we've covered yet! But also homoerotic spy shenanigans? Like the British Empire, SKYFALL is a land of contrasts.
Keanu May concludes with the 2014 bisexual lighting revenge thriller JOHN WICK. Rowan is joined by Rob Zacny, Carli Velocci, and Abby Waysdorf to discuss the rise of the R-rated action movie, metrosexuality, Keanu's vulnerability, the supernatural elements of John Wick and the time when he drives into a dude and then shoots him through a roof, that ruled.
A baby pisses a fire out and that's one of the things that helps calm this movie down instead of escalating. Rowan Kaiser is joined by Vice Games' Rob Zacny and The Pitch's Abby Olcese to talk about John Woo's legendary gun-fu flick Hard Boiled.
There comes a time in every PC owner’s life where you have to make some tough decisions. Well, for the better part of the last two years, one Rob Zacny has been slowly stemming the oncoming waves of failing computer components but his PC has finally bitten the dust. That means he’s spent the last week exploring the world of Cloud Gaming, and found that landscape treacherous. Austin’s way of saying “new year, new me” is to finish off some old games, revisiting Hitman 2 and Star Wars The Old Republic to finally put those to bed. Patrick is learning the beauty of HDR with new forms of streaming games to his phone, Cado is becoming his best hacker self in EXAPUNKS, and Rob is finally in on a little known rogue like deck builder called Slay the Spire.Discussed: Rob’s Streaming Adventures 3:12, Hitman 2 40:04, Star Wars: The Old Republic 43:00, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim 56:19, Demon’s Souls 1:01:50, Persona 5 Strikers 1:03:00, Slay the Spire 1:13:04 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Eco. Economy. Ecology. Rob Zacny has Opinions on both on this podcast! First, Austin, Rob, Patrick, and Ricardo sit down and unpack the Apple/Epic Games beef, what the stakes are, and who stands to gain from the legal battle. After the break, Rob checks in from the skies over Michigan, but first his game has to load. He's got his preview up for Microsoft Flight Simulator, a game that is ridiculously detailed, but pushes his computer in an unexpected way. Patrick has been checking out Blasphemous, one of the only 2D souls-likes he's actually checked out, and Austin is dipping back into Remnant: From the Ashes, and convincing Patrick that he needs to play it. Then the crew answers listener questions such as "how many ketchup packets should they give you at whataburger?"Discussed: Epic Sues Apple 1:20, Microsoft Flight Simulator 39:14, Take on Helicopters 1:05:33, Blasphemous 1:14:22, Remnant: From the Ashes 1:18:07, Emails 1:25:29 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode, Joel and Tim discuss some of the ways politics interact with games, and some of the ways different games have portrayed morality, through systems and narrative. Topics Discussed: Morality in narrative branching choices (KOTOR, Jedi Academy) Gradient / reputation systems (Fallout, RDR) Frostpunk's assumption that survival requires -- and is worth -- moral compromise Restorative Justice (wherein we miss the opportunity to say, "He repented but it was something of a Tolkien gesture") and RDR2 Unapologetic storytelling by Bethesda in Wolfenstein 1 and 2 vs cowardly corporate hedging by Ubisoft in Farcry 5 and the Division 2 Does a game have a moral responsibility to tell the truth? Rob Zacny interviews Paradox Chief Business Development Officer, Shams Jorjani. He's the last of Paradox's old corporate leadership, and has seen the company through a variety of high and low moments, helping to put out fires when needed, most notably during the acquisition of White Wolf when it was under scrutiny for their mishandling of queer history in a Vampire: The Masquerade source book. They also discuss worker compensation and mobility at Paradox, the focus on long term growth over quarterly profits, and why he's stuck it out at the same place for so long. As the fall game’s deluge rages on, Rob Zacny’s got his sights set on the beach, and totally not at all on that one player that ruined a perfectly good race in GRID. Austin is exploring new biomes and getting loot in Cube World, a game that most people figured would never come out, but Austin always believed. Patrick’s been running out of gas in the post-apocalyptic Overland, and Cado is just waiting for Shadowkeep to finally drop.Discussed: Cube World, GRID, Overland, The Last of Us Part 2, Destiny 2:Shadowkeep, Link's Awakening See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
So, Rob somehow got the keys to Nintendo. The Nintendo Direct this week is evidence of that, and we do a pretty extensive overview of all the wild new things this Rob Zacny led Nintendo is getting up to. Patrick and Danielle give us a history of Deadly Premonition and how good/bad it is. Motherboard's own Emanuel Maiberg joins us to give us his thoughts on the Star Wars Jedi Knight competitive scene, as well as thoughts on Gears 5. Cado spends probably too much time defending Taco Bell. The Tehran Conference. The meeting at Appomattox. The Council of Elrond. All historical gatherings that pale in comparison to the summit that occurred in late July 2019 as the Three Moves Ahead team gathered in Oregon for several days of gaming. Hosted by Dr. Bruce Geryk, Gerykon 2019 was attended by Michael Hermes, Rob Zacny, and Troy "I hope they let me back into Canada" Goodfellow. Bruce played the part of eccentric board game sommelier, guiding the group through several layers of gaming history. Our first episode about Gerykon 2019 covers several entries from Reiner Knizia, a household name among those in the know. From the dizzying heights of Ra and Modern Art to the baffling lows of Beowulf, we consumed great amounts of scotch and had many discussions about game design and strategy. Also, Rob made up a really gross name for a painting.

You may have noticed that we've been digging BattleTech around here. Between Rob Zacny's review earlier today and last Friday's livestream, giant robots have very clearly been very much on our minds. You'll be able to hear more of my thoughts on the game on Friday's episode of Waypoint Radio, which features Rob Zacny and I doing a huge deep dive into the game. Suffice to say, I love it.Which is why I jumped at the chance to chat with the game's composer, Jon Everist, and to exclusively feature the above behind-the-scenes look at his process for composing and recording the game's incredible score. In the past, the games of the BattleTech universe (titles like MechAssault and MechWarrior 2) relied on wailing metal guitars to sell a the fantasy of the mech piloting. But in BattleTech, Everist offers a breadth of musical language to communicate a sense of triumph, hardship, and adventure. The game sounds sparse in some moments, with analog synths and distorted strings providing nearly-ambient backing to your life as a mercenary. And in other moments, when the galactic politicking comes to a hard point, the orchestra swells to support the weight of the moment. When you're done listening, go read Rob's review right here, check out our exclusive behind-the-scenes video here, and check out the soundtrack over at Jon Everist's Bandcamp or on Spotify. Rob Zacny is no longer with is—don't worry, he only flew back home to California—but we couldn't resist bringing in another guest. Polygon's Phil Kollar is visiting New York, and despite worries that he'd get thrown in Internet jail for getting too close to us, he joined Austin, Danielle, and Patrick to discuss the state of Hearthstone, what the heck is going on with that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds game, and find out what's inside The Question Bucket. This week Rob Zacny and Fraser Brown talk about Banner Saga 2, the sequel to the Kickstarter darling that made a splash with its gorgeous graphics and brutal gameplay. The decisions are harder, the battles are more interesting, and lots of people still die.
This week Shawn, Julian and Rob Zacny catch up on your emails!
Rob Zacny, Rowan Kaiser, and TJ Hafer range the hills of Gettysburg and traverse the Pacific in a show that talks about games that alter the course of history. Nostalgia is a powerful thing. Softened memories of sunlit rooms on Saturday mornings and brilliant panzer strategy replace the reality of grueling turn counts and CD-ROM issues. Can you ever really go home again? Is Master of Orion really as good as we recall? (The answer to both is: no.) Rob Zacny, Rowan Kaiser, Sean Sands, and Troy "I don't Google during a podcast" Goodfellow wheel their chairs into the whist room to talk about games that have aged gracefully and games that have not.
This week Julian, Sean, Amanda and Rob Zacny talk about "uncool" games.
Rob Zacny gets together with Rabbitcon host Julian Murdoch as well as game designers Rob Daviau and David Heron to talk about party games. Austin and new guest contributor Rob Zacny talk about growing up with strategy games, the current state of the genre, and what excites them about 2016.
This week Sean Sands, Julian Murdoch, Shawn Andrich and Rob Zacny talk games that begin with "The" and catch up on your emails!
This week on The Game Design Rountable we have Dirk, David, and Rob talking to - wait, no. This is Three Moves Ahead and Dirk - no Rob - talk to the other Rob. Rob Zacny. I don't even know any more. The days turn into nights which turn into days, nothing but podcasts. Names and titles pass me, topics upon topics. Who can keep track any more? Is this Three Moves Ahead or TGDRT? Another file on the hard drive, another show posted. Anyway, Rob Daviau and David V. Heron talk to Rob about comebacks in gaming.
