Araujo is expected to stay at Barcelona, and they will offer him a new contract in the next months. We will see how that conversation will go as a crucial step ahead of the summer. Apart from that, there are always links for Man United and centre-backs, it's normal as they want to sign a CB in 2024.

Everyone feeling positive this Monday? Franck Kessie's stoppage time winner handed Barcelona a third Clasico win in a row and, more importantly, moved them 12 points clear of Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga with just 12 games left. Sergi Roberto had earlier cancelled out Ronald Araujo's own goal at Spotify Camp Nou. Sam is joined by Toni, with a sprinkling of Rik, to discuss why Barça are more than a club, the LaLiga title moving into sight, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, the Camp Nou atmosphere and why parking on a double yellow line is always a penalty offence even it it's by just 10 centimetres.Support the show
This weekend the gap between Barcelona and Madrid could stretch to 12 points or be reduced to six – and which way the title race swings could depend on how the two coaches consider a match-up that has had more effect on recent Clasicos than any other: that between Madrid's dynamic attacker, Vinicius Junior and Barcelona's dominant defender, Ronald Araujo. Here, in an audio version of the column I wrote for ESPNFC, I trace the situation back to one of the most famous matches in the history of FC Barcelona – with a little help from a couple of the participants. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Alasdair, Barlow and Michael are joined by Luke Entwistle (of Get French Football News and the official Ligue 1 podcast fame) to discuss and analyse the latest European football news. The boys look at Villarreal's post-Emery struggles, Ivan Jurić's impressive managerial résumé, Monaco's hopes and expectations for Eliesse Ben Seghir, Schalke's first-rate fanbase and more. 1:29 - What factors have contributed to Schalke's apparent post-winter break turnaround, and, with that turnaround in mind, how might we now rate the club's chances of avoiding the drop? / 14:12 - What impact has Gian Piero Gasperini had on Italian football's coaching and tactical landscape? / 27:37 - How might we evaluate Monaco's progress to date under Philippe Clement, and, looking ahead, how might we assess the club's current direction of travel on and off the field of play? / 42:46 - Why might Ronald Araujo be regarded as one of the best defenders in the world right now?

The Barca Breakdown is back with FC Barcelona's 1-0 victory against Valencia at the Camp Nou. Raphinha scored a beautiful header from a nice Busquets assist. Ronald Araujo picked up a red card, largely due to a poor back pass from Jules Kounde. It looks like Araujo will only miss the Athletic Bilbao game, but there are worries he may have to miss the Clasico vs. Real Madrid as well.
In today's episode, Troy and Gabriel dive into the latest Copa del Rey semi-final match between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona came out on top with a 1-0 victory, thanks to an own goal by Real Madrid after Franck Kessie's brilliant counter-attack. But it was Ronald Araujo who stole the show with his outstanding defensive performance, nullifying Vinicius Jr.'s threat and helping Barcelona keep a clean sheet. We also analyze Xavi's coaching performance, examining his success in the Clásicos versus his record in Europe. Additionally, Sergio Busquets made history during the Clásico, overtaking the legendary Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos in appearances. How would you rate this victory in Clásico history? Hello Rank Squad! With the Champions League in full swing this week we wanted to change up the pace a little bit, and go a tad more evergreen - revisiting an old favourite that we'd had more than a few requests to look at again. Back in one of our first ever episodes, we ranked every Premier League captain on their current playing ability, but that was two and a half years ago, so it was worth a new go round the merry-go-round. Things We Love starts us off where we talk Barcelona's current excellent form, whether Ronald Araujo should be getting close to the 'Best CBs in the World' debate, and Nantes' resurgence ahead of their UEL tie with Juventus this week. There's a Melon of the Week from mad scenes at Ibrox in the Scottish Cup, and Gibberish returns as Sam talks through his life this past week dealing with some surgery in the household. It's Ranks! In today's episode, Gabriel discusses Barcelona's victory last night as FC Barcelona beat Villarreal 1-0, securing their 11th straight win and moving 11 points clear at the top of the table. They have kept 16 clean sheets in 21 league games and conceded only seven goals. Pedri and Gavi had a great match, with Pedri scoring his 7th goal of the season. Ronald Araujo performed admirably, demonstrating his status as a top European defender; however, he will miss the next La Liga match. Thankfully, Xavi was able to rest Frenkie De Jong, Ousmane Dembele, Ronald Araujo, and Jules Kounde for the full 90 minutes, with a La Liga game against Getafe looming this Sunday. Real Madrid is 3 points behind, so it is crucial for Barca to rest players when possible in the coming months.

The BarcaBreakdown discuss Ronald Araujo's call up for the World Cup with Uruguay after recovering from thigh surgery. FC Barcelona must not be too happy with Araujo playing, as we experienced Samuel Umtiti hurting his knee permanently playing for France (and winning) in 2018. However, Araujo already had surgery and is recovering quicker than expected, which hopefully helps reduce any chance of injury. Here are the other Barca players at the World Cup 2022: Spain: Eric Garcia, Ansu Fati, Pedri, Gavi, Busquets, Ferran Torres, and Jordi Alba France: Ousmane Dembele and Jules Kounde Denmark: Eric Christensen Poland: Robert Lewandowski Brazil: Raphinha Netherlands: Frenkie De Jong and Memphis Depay Germany: Marc-Andre Ter Stegen

The BarcaBreakdown discuss the issues FC Barcelona and Xavi are facing after a draw to Rayo Vallecano fell well short of expectations. With the additions of Lewandowski, Raphinha, Christensen (and now Kounde), Xavi needs time to develop Barca. However, some fans are worried about a continuous trend from Xavi's side, so the BarcaBreakdown tackle the issues he must conquer! First, we discuss how Ronald Araujo playing as a full back against Rayo did not go well, and our believe that Araujo should only be played there against very threatening wingers. Araujo lacks the ability, like we saw Xavi use with Dani Alves last season, to act as an inverted full back. This role is crucial as it allows the full back to act as a second pivot and help facilitate the ball and draw defenders away from the interiors and wingers. It will be interesting to see if Xavi continues to not believe in Sergino Dest and whether Barca sell him in the next few weeks. Kounde may be a better option at right back, though we will need to see Kounde perform there over the next few weeks to understand if he is a good fit. One of the revelations from Rayo was that Frenkie De Jong still plays a large role in this FC Barcelona side, even after all of the rumors of his departure have been circling this month.
Jaleel/ThePurist's Medium Article: https://medium.com/@Jaleel/decoding-barcelonas-centre-backs-7914e994cea1 ThePurist Twitter: https://twitter.com/ThePurist_ The BarcaBreakdown have special guest Jaleel aka the Purist, as he's known by his Twitter handle, to discuss is most recent article "Decoding Barcelona's Centre Backs". We discussed his preferred gala backline as FC Barcelona have more defensive options with the signing of Christensen and Kounde. The other players to choose from are Eric Garcia, Jordi Alba, Ronald Araujo, Sergino Dest, Sergi Roberto, Balde, and Gerard Pique. Jaleel explains why he chose each of the 4 players based on what Xavi needs and each players strengths and weaknesses. The Breakdown picked Jaleel's brain about the downstream affects of some of the choices and the expectations for the team coming into the 2022/23 season. It is clear Barca have a a high potential next season, however, with the signing of many new players and still having a young squad, Barca will still face some adversity. Nonetheless, Jaleel provided some great insight and discussion about the current state of Barca's backline and the season to come. It is exciting to consider all of Barca's options and hopefully they will come out of the preseason with a hunger to take some titles under the direction of Xavi.
The Barca Breakdown discussed another landmark transfer in the summer window. Joules Kounde has signed with FC Barcelona, a deal including €50 million transfer fee + €10 million in variables over 4 years. Despite Chelsea offering over €60 million, it was clear the Frenchman didn't want to go to the Premier League. Barca now have a reinforced defense that will help them make it further into the Champions League and stop the comebacks that Barca fell victim to. But it matters no longer, Barcelona have Gerard Pique, Joules Kounde, Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo, Andres Christenesen, Sergio Roberto, Sergino Dest, and Jordi Alba. This will allow Xavi to rotate players much more effectively as well as mitigate the impact felt when a defender becomes injured. With so many options will Barca play a 4-3-3 or a 3-4-3? A 3-4-3 has seen much of Barca fall victim to assault from the wings, many times having players backtracking during a counter. It is likely that Xavi will stick with a 4-3-4 especially when trying out different lineups and their effectiveness. The last thing to consider is what will Xavi's preferred lineup be? Players to get the most time in as center backs will most likely be Kounde and Araujo, but there will be plenty of time for Christensen. We believe Eric Garcia will lose some minutes/starts and dest in certain situations may have to compete with Roberto or Araujo. Whatever Xavi leans towards, Barca definitely have some great potential and will be facing Juventus tomorrow in the USA.
On episode 374, Dan is joined by Jared Lindsey, President of Penya Blaugrana Las Vegas, to discuss Barcelona's preseason win over Real Madrid in Las Vegas. They talk about the atmosphere in the stadium, Ronald Araujo being the best defender in two positions, Frenkie at CB again, the difference Lewandowski makes, and much more! Running Order: How many Culers were in the stadium? What happened when Raphinha scored the goal? Is de Jong staying at CB? What can we learn from Lewandowski's debut? For footballers, what's the one thing that puts them at risk of this condition? Headers! Over the years, we have seen different footballers come out in bad condition after going in for an aerial duel. Some start bleeding on the spot. Some are disoriented for some minutes due to being concussed. Oh, by the way, statistics show that 22 percent of injuries in football these days are concussions. That shows you how common they are. Some require an ambulance to take them off the pitch like Ronald Araujo against Celta Vigo. Some crack their skulls like Petr Cech. Some even nearly lose their lives on the spot, Raul Jimenez against Arsenal in 2020 being a pretty recent example. Now, these are the ones with immediate and obvious impacts. What's scary is that, sometimes, a player could win a clear header and feel perfectly normal at that moment, but that could be contributing to their risk of suffering from CTE later in life.

The Barca Breakdown discussed 3 points that were secured in match day 34 against Mallorca at the Camp Nou. With Dembele feeling under the weather, Xavi chose to start Depay on the left and moved Ferran Torres to the right wing. Of course, Pedri is out so Gavi started alongside Frenkie and Busi. In the back line, Pique started with Ronald Araujo, Jordi Alba, and Dani Alves. The first half was pretty lackluster and disorganized. A few breaks from Mallorca could have easily been scored, but their team was not clinical. It didn't seem too promising until Jordi Alba placed a ball over the top for Memphis Depay. He was able to control the ball and score to take Barca 1-0. The half ended with much improvement to be desired. In the second half Barca really turned up the tempo, constantly attacking Mallorca. In the 54' Ferran Torres' shot gets blocked and Busquets picks up the ball. He shoots off his left foot into the right corner of the net and Barca are up 2-0. Fati and Dembele are subbed on for Aubameyang and Ferran Torres. Immediately, Barca shut down. Mallorca continues to attack on counters, and eventually earn a free kick. The ball goes over the top of the Barca line and straight at an open Raillo. The ball deflects off his knee and makes it past Stegen... 2-1. The match ends with Barca hanging on by a thread to their 3 points. Luckily, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla dropped points this week. Barca look to take on Real Betis on Saturday.

The Barca Breakdown discuss the Sevilla La Liga match coming up as the 2nd and 3rd teams face off. Coming off the international break, we hope Xavi is able to recreate the magic we were seeing from the team, culminating in the 0-4 victory against Real Madrid in El Clasico. There are some interesting storylines for FC Barcelona as as the season comes to a close. Firstly, Ousmane Dembele and Barca are reportedly in talks again about signing a contract renewal. Sergino Dest being injured as well as Eric Garcia's string of good performances will place an interesting dynamic on the right back position. Will we see Ronald Araujo continue to play there? Or will Dani Alves get a majority of the playtime? With many games in April, we are hoping to see Xavi utilize rotations well to keep everyone healthy. With Gavi, Nico, Lengelet, Depay, Luuk De Jong, Adama Traore, and more on the bench, we are well-positioned to keep players healthy with the incredible depth FC Barcelona have.

The Barca Breakdown discussed the victory in Istanbul against Galatasaray to carry them through to the Quarter Finals. Barca were tied coming into the second leg on a 0-0 aggregate. Xavi decided to deploy Erica Garcia in place of Ronald Araujo alongside Pique, Dest, and Alba. In the midfield we had Frenki, Busquets, and Pedri. Lastly in the front Aubameyang, Torres, and Traore. The first half found Barca struggling to connect passes as well as they were susceptible to counter attacks. Even though Frenkie De Jong had an early opportunity in the 9' Barca were not looking good. On a set piece, Galatasaray were able to score a flying header past Ter Stegen to take them up 1-0. Barca took some time, but their defense closed down and were able to stop further breakaways. This allowed Barca to control the pitch. In a fantastic display of skill and patience, Pedri was set in front of goal with defenders and Pena. He faked the defenders and smashed a ball past Pena, scoring the equalizer. This was the spark Barca needed coming into the second half. As we always say we look to have Xavi make subs when things need adjustment. Dembele came on at the start of the second, half in for Traore. Fast forward, a shot from Torres was blocked and came off to fall for Frenkie who placed it beautifully in front of Aubameyang. Barca took the lead 1-2! While Barca move to the quarters, we are left with an injured Dest and a possible doubt of Pique playing in El Clasico. A victory against the rivals would be glorious! But what will happen if these important players are injured?
On episode 335, Dan and Domagoj Kostanjšak discuss FC Barcelona's 0-0 draw with Galatasaray in the Europa League. They talk about the struggles of the Nico-Adama-Araujo combination, Xavi's changes for the second half, the possible transfer of Andreas Christensen, and much more! Running Order: What broke down between Adama Traore, Nico Gonzalez, and Ronald Araujo? Who actually played well? What was the issue with Ferran Torres and Memphis Depay? The Barca Breakdown discuss recent news as Dembele's agent's meeting with Chelsea to strike a deal. Reports are that the negotiation did not go particularly well and Dembele is asking to speak to Laporta directly in hopes of staying. While these are rumors, there could be some validity knowing that Dembele's agent would be asking for a large payout. The world also knows that Demebel has had his fair share of injuries. Will Dembele be able to strike a deal with Laporta and stay at Barca or will his agent be successful and strike a deal and make a move to England? In other important news, Fati, who re-injured his knee against Athletic Bilbao, has opted out of surgery. He has chosen a more conservative approach and will be available at a sooner date. We discuss the pros and cons of each decision and understand how one could make either decision based on the circumstance. Speaking of players possibly leaving, Ronald Araujo has rejected the first proposal by Barca in regards to a contract extension. It is thought that the contract did not offer enough to the largely sought after CB. Barca will have to come back to the drawing board and make an enticing offer to keep the CB if they don't want to lose him to the Premier League. Now we don't think he will leave easily since it seems Araujo loves Barca and wants to continue performing well for the club. Lastly, we mention the rumors of the Pique/Messi fallout as Pique was not present at a dinner with Xavi, Busquets, and Alba.

The Barca Breakdown discussed another tough loss in a big game. In the Round of 16 of the Copa Del Rey Barca were knocked out by Athletic Bilbao who just lost in the Supercopa against Real Madrid. Seeing as the Barca Breakdown have believed Barca were on a small upswing this game has really highlighted the teams deficiencies. First and foremost, the Barca backline is old and slow. We constantly have Dani Alves, Busquets, and Jordi Alba playing defense against some of the fastest players on the pitch and time and time again they fail to keep up and prevent counters. Of course we can say that these players are old and under performing to the caliber they once had, but who is really to blame? It is clear and obvious these players are old, but we see them time and time again playing a full 90 minutes on the pitch and constantly let us down. Xavi is clearly choosing to start the players and not making tactical decisions to minimize or account for the players deficiencies. Furthemore, it seems we lack the strategies to prevent being susceptible to counters and set pieces which have resulted in many goals against the Blaugrana. With the benching of Ousmane Dembele, due to his lack of contract agreement, Barca were left to head the game with Abde, Jutgla, and Ferran Torres. Essentially, all three were non-existent in the front attack and really lacked creativity and open space to press. This could have also been a result of the fact that Barca could not keep Bilbao out of their half for most of the game. Only a few players were a delight to watch, the top three being Ronald Araujo, Pedri, and Marc Andre Ter Stegen. Barca have a lot of work to do, but It needs to be orchestrated by Xavi to realize his vision and Barca success.

The Barca Breakdown discussed the El Clasico of the Supercopa! While Barcelona could not take a victory here and progress to the final on Sunday, there are many great takeaways from this game. First and foremost, we saw the return of the very anticipated Ansu Fati and Pedri. Fati came in off the bench and was able to secure Barcelona's second goal to force overtime of the game. What was truly wonderful was watching Barcelona operate with such relentless vigor when going down a goal throughout the whole game. Two key players exhibiting our unending fight to win was Ousmane Dembele and Luuk De Jong who both were non-stop creating chances and making attempts on goal. On the defensive side we must highlight the studly performances of Ronald Araujo and Gerard Pique who protect the net on several accounts despite Barca allowing 3 goals. This margin could have been much higher. Although, as the Breakdown saw some great moments in this spectacular game, we must highlight our deficiencies. Overall the Barca defense was not good enough to prevent 3 goals from the ferocity and speed of the Real Madrid attacking force. As we have said many times, the Barca defense has much work to do in goal prevention. Not only does the defense need to spruce up, but Barcelona cannot be careless with the ball leading up to the countless counter attacks from Madrid. This game was winnable, but we were full of countless mistakes leading to our demise. While the players clearly have improvements to make, Xavi as coach needs more time. His substitutes for this game worked out overall. We do criticize the fact the busquets did not come off after a bad giveaway and that Depay had no play coming into this game. Overall we can say there is great promise after a game like this and the team has been showing leaps forward in improvement. We hope it is in time to seal a top 4 spot in La Liga so that we can make Champions League next season. Samuel Umtiti. Esta temporada nos sigue dando sorpresas...
The BarcaBreakdown discuss the 1-2 victory for FC Barcelona over Linares Deportivo. Thankfully, substitutions at half time allowed Ousmane Dembele and Ferran Jutgla to score 2 second half goals to allow FC Barcelona to advance to the Round of 16 of the Copa Del Rey. A first half marked by bad defense and ball control was highlighted by a Linares Deportivo goal that quickly put FC Barcelona behind. At half, Xavi made a crucial substitution of Riqui Puig, who had a very poor performance today. Though, Frenkie De Jong and Ronald Araujo both picked up injuries which could hurt an already injury plagued team in Barca. New is coming out that Araujo's hand is fractured and he will miss 3-4 weeks. Dembele again sparked some magic with his performance, which is increasingly bittersweet as he has not signed a contract renewal to stay with FC Barcelona and could be on his way out of the club this winter or summer due to an expiring contract. Ferran Jutgla continued to take the most of his opportunities starting (as Barca have injuries to Memphis Depay, Braithwaite, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres is not ready to play yet) and score a nice goal to seal the Barca victory. The BarcaBreakdown the 2-2 Draw vs. Sevilla in La Liga. Facing the #2 team in La Liga, Xavi's Barca played a very impressive game as the team continues to learn Xavi's style he intends to implement in the team. Ronald Araujo scored a wonderful header and the only goal allowed by Barca was an unfortunate corner goal in the first half. Barca really took the first half by storm and showcased some brilliant offensive play with Gavi, Dembele, and Abde showing no fear against a great Sevilla side. The game turned on its head once Kounde received a red card for throwing the ball directly at Jordi Alba's head. Sevilla played a very aggressive game with multiple fouls on Barca players throughout the match. Down to 10-men, Sevilla parked the bus and Barca had very few good scoring opportunities. Again, we still are facing tremendous injuries to our offense with Fati, Pedri, Depay, and Braithwaite all still injured. The team continues to inspire, especially led by young payers like Gavi, Nico, Abde, and Araujo. Our team still has an issue of turning in weaker second half performances, though this is getting better. Please like, comment and subscribe to our channel!
The BarcaBreakdown cover FC Barcelona's victory against Dynamo Kyiv, during which Ansu Fati scored a wonderful goal for the HUGE victory in the Champions League. The game also showed Ousmane Dembele finally back from injury with a promising performance showcasing his speed and dribbling, while Frenkie De Jong and Ronald Araujo also came back. The second game under Barjuan was not perfect, as we continue to see areas of improvement in defense, midfield, and offense that we hope Xavi will come to improve. Overall, Marc Andre Ter Stegen made a few critical saves while Eric Garcia and Clement Lengelet did just enough to help keep the clean sheet. We were also very happy to see Dembele, Ansu Fati, and Memphis Depay line up as our front three in the second half. This trio will need to be deadly to ensure that Barca move on in the Champions League with group leaders Bayern Munich. Preparing for the GINORMOUS match vs. Benfica in three weeks, the continued growth of Gavi and Nico will do wonders once Pedri is back in the midfield.
There's always a few players who explode into life each season to make big waves for clubs that we didn't see coming. Whether it's comebacks or breakthroughs, across Europe and beyond, previously fringe options suddenly become crucial elements for a new manager or find themselves in the plans of an old one. We look at five of the most surprising options to have emerged this season so far. There's also, of course, Things We Love, which this week starts with a love letter to Ronald Araujo, and then descends into the Koeman in or out discourse. If you want a full breakdown of our thoughts on the next Barcelona manager, we've done a YouTube special here! We chat too about Danny Drinkwater's renaissance at Reading, and Napoli's perfect start to the Serie A season which included a training ground special on Monday night. Melon of the Week goes to a certain goalkeeper from the Europa League, although there's a nice fan-based counterpoint to that one; and Sam picks his favourite Pringles flavours in the Gibberish. It's Ranks! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The BarcaBreakdown discuss the awful 1-1 draw of FC Barcelona against Granada at the Camp Nou. With another embarrassing performance from Koeman's team, we wonder how long Laporta will allow Koeman to continue coaching. An uninspired Barca performance was exemplified by the scenes of Ronald Araujo and Gerard Pique as strikers at the end of the game. Barca's defense let up the first goal of the game in minute 3, showing again that this team has no ability to stop the opposition from scoring. However, this game also showed the issues with the offense as FC Barcelona resorted to crosses and praying through the game, with Luuk De Jong, Depay, and Coutinho showing little firepower in an aerial game. Koeman again complained about the lack of talent on this team with so many injuries and so many young players starting. However, with stars like Frenkie De Jong, Depay, Coutinho, Busquets and more playing, it is hard to believe that Koeman's team cannot do more against Granada at the Camp Nou. The list of possible coaches Laporta may look to are: • Xavi Hernández • Andrea Pirlo • Antonio Conte • Marcelo Bielsa • Erik Ten Hag Please like, comment and subscribe to our channel! Barca faced off against Getafe at the Camp Nou with a less than convincing victory. Even though Barca were able to score two goals in the first half from Sergi Roberto and Memphis Depay, Getafe was able to take advantage against the weak defense of Barca. Getafe, a team who could not score against a 10 man Valencia was able to place the ball past Ter Stegen. The biggest criticisms fall upon Greizmann and Koeman. Griezmann was invisible, not involved in the attack against Getafe whatsoever. Koeman has proven to provide zero tactical prowess regarding any mindful plan on the pitch. To add to this, subs were only utilized to maintain the lead and not used to improve the game or replace tired or poor performing players. Where are Puig and Coutinho? Koeman needs to rotate players and find new tactical choices. Experiment with the players you have and make some smart decisions. Utilizing the same line up and only making changes when it;s too late is not intelligent football or leadership. The positives were single player standout performances from Depay, Frenkie De Jong, and Ronald Araujo. Our future looks grim as we head into a 2 week international break and play against Sevilla. As well we will be playing against Atletico Madrid and Real Mardrid coming October. Please like, comment and subscribe to our channel! Ansu Fati and Araujo will be the 2 players that are set to feature in Barcelona's squad list very soon. As for Araujo he will make his return THIS MONDAY against Huesca.
