Hello to you listening in Roseau, Capital of Dominica, Lesser Antilles!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Many people are under the impression that the Hero's Journey made famous by Joseph Campbell is about an external journey to vanquish foes and return with some Truth. In truth, the real journey is an internal one. The Hero is called to a task that is not at the surface of her being; rather, the task requires her to do what I have called for some 30 years now an “archeological dig on oneself.” It's serious stuff. No wonder the Hero resists. We think we can remain emotionally safe by hiding our vulnerability. The problem is that as long as we resist the call (and I know well how I resisted the call to leave behind my Voiceless Victim self) we will never be able to live our Truth, never experience our Essence.Yes, the Hero goes out on a quest; but that external journey is just the stage on which the story is played. Saying Yes! to the Hero's Journey begins the inner journey work, the transformation that allows us to move out of our fear to courage, from being stuck in our old identity to living alive and awake, realizing our true potential, fulfilling our destiny, or experiencing our longed-for heart's desire.Story Prompt: What are you finally ready to trade by saying Yes! to walking the Hero's Journey? Write that story!  And, if you could use a hand with your transformation work, I'm here at Quarter Moon Story Arts!   Contact me.    You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out What I Offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Start-up Session,✓ Opt In to my monthly NewsAudioLetter for bonus gift, valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. [29:17] “How Far? A Tale of Determination, DNA, and Drama” by Bob Wilber is a book written in the "historical fiction" genre, and features two fictional characters who "write" the book in their own voices. One is a baseball player from Southern California. The other is a hockey player from Roseau, Minnesota. When their very different lives intersect, they become friends and the drama begins. It's a life book told through a sports lens and - everyone can relate to it. It's not only an incredible read and a great story but it's also full of life and leadership lessons that anyone can benefit from. In this episode we speak with the author about his book and why he wrote it and what's unique about it. We get to better understand about the genre of historical fiction and how it can be used for any type of storytelling. We learn more about who Bob is, the skills he acquired including wisdom from his writing coach and the lessons he learned about himself on this journey and much, much more. ABOUT Bob: Bob Wilber has been writing creatively since grade school and first published at age 16. He is the son of a former Major League baseball player and a mother who passed along her communications and public relations skills to her youngest son.  After earning a full athletic scholarship to Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville, he spent six years in professional baseball as a player, coach, and scout for the Toronto Blue Jays. Bob then moved on to international sports marketing and eventually spent 22 years in the world of NHRA Drag Racing, as a PR representative and team manager for Funny Car drivers Del Worsham and Tim Wilkerson. In 2017, he published his autobiography "Bats, Balls, & Burnouts"  and his latest book is "How Far?"  A Tale of Determination, DNA, and Drama. Bob lives in Minnesota with his wife Barbara and their cats Boofus and Buster. You can reach him at BobWilber.net where you learn more about Bob and purchase the book through links to Amazon.

The World Series is now over and for baseball fans, we're in that never-never land where all we can hope for is a bit of news from our favorite team while we're sitting out the long offseason until spring training begins in February. But I've got an idea about something that can help you pass the time. Pick up a new book by today's guest, Bob Wilber. It's called “How Far,” and it explores the incredible friendship between a baseball player from Southern California and a hockey play from Minnesota. It's an inspiring story for sports fans, yes, but really for anyone who wants to be motivated to achieve their goals despite the curve balls and sinkers that inevitably are thrown in their path.As the son of a major league baseball player and a former pro baseball player himself, BobWilber has lived the athlete's life. How Far? weaves the compelling story of two disparate athletes who meet and form an unlikely bond. His creative use of first-person writing, having his fictional protagonists appear to write the book themselves in their distinct voices, immerses readers in every thought and word of the two characters. Brooks Bennett is a gifted baseball player (and the son of artist hippies) from Southern California, and Eric Olson is an undersized hockey player from Roseau, Minnesota — where hockey is king. The two men come from vastly different worlds and couldn't be more dissimilar. And in one spontaneous moment, their paths cross, and their lives change forever. It's a fun and interesting story, especially if you enjoy sports and an inside look at what it's like trying to pursue a Major League Baseball career, and then adapting to life after baseball. Here are some questions we asked Wilber:Q. You're the son of a Major Leaguer, your mom was a radio personality and then a PR person. You played college and professional baseball and then went into high level sports marketing while also running three different professional indoor soccer franchises as an executive. Then, you launched a 22-year career as a manager and PR rep for a couple of highly successful and popular Nitro Funny Car teams on the National Hot Rod Association tour. After all that, you walked away to become an author! You've just published your second book and it sounds like it's getting rave reviews. Tell us about how you adapted so much throughout your career…Q. I get that you had baseball in your DNA thanks to your dad, and after your professional playing days were over you even were a regional scouting supervisor for the Toronto Blue Jays. But how in the world did you make the shift to NHRA drag racing?Q. After all of that, why walk away to write books? What in your mind told you to go for it and start writing books? That's a bold leap!Q. So your autobiography, “Bats, Balls & Burnouts" was a hit, and you decided to write another book. Tell us how you settled on the premise and style for “How Far?”Q. How much of "How Far?" is totally real and how much is fiction?Q. And that begs the question: If your two main characters in “How Far?" are fictional, who are they based on?Q. How did you even pick those guys, those sports, and their personalities?Q. Is it a sports book? Would it appeal anyone other than sports fans?Q. Let's talk some baseball. Are you still connected to the game in any way?Q. What did you think of the World Series, the upstart Phillies against the incredible Houston Astros and Dusty Baker?Q. What are your thoughts about the influence of money on the game today? For example, the LA Angels' ownership say they won't trade Shohei Ohtani, the incredible two-way player who's contract expires at the end of the 2023 season, for which he will earn $30 million guaranteed. But what will he command going forward?Q. And how about the Yankees' Aaron Judge, who shattered the American League home run record in 2022 and is now ready to enter free agency?Q. Do you think these kinds of mega contracts are good for baseball?Q. What's next for you?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Bob Bergland's vision and leadership led to the government's first initiative in organic and sustainable agriculture. This week, our host Ron talks with Bob about his several decades of public service, with the interview focusing primarily on four studies. This was recorded in 2017, one year before Bob passed away. Robert (Bob) Bergland was born on July 22, 1928, on a farm near Roseau, Minnesota. He lived in the community until he passed away in December 2018 at the age of 90. In 1963, he went to work for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, first at the state level in Minnesota, and later in Washington, D.C. In 1970, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving three terms from 1971 to 1977 as a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. In Congress, he served on the House Committee on Agriculture's subcommittees for Conservation and Credit, and Livestock, Grains, Dairy, and Poultry. In 1977, shortly after beginning a fourth term in the House, he was appointed Secretary of Agriculture by President Jimmy Carter and served in that role from Jan. 23, 1977, to Jan. 20, 1981. During his tenure, he commissioned a major report examining the structure of American agriculture, "A Time to Choose," and the first USDA study on organic farming, "Report and Recommendations on Organic Farming." At the end of President Carter's administration, he was named vice president and general manager of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. After retiring in 1994, he was elected by the Minnesota State Legislature to a term on the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. The interview was conducted on March 7, 2017. Tous très différents de vous, radicalement étrangers à ce que vous connaissez : Ici, l'étranger, c'est vous. Ce n'est pas vous qui traversez la forêt, c'est la forêt qui vous traverse.
