POPULARITY
I am very happy to be back after my brief summer hiatus to bring to you a truly inspirational story of someone who has experienced all of life's highs and lows and has come through it all thanks to grace, resilience, great friends, and incredible talent. Today I am honored to be speaking with Grammy-nominated recording artist, songwriter, activist, filmmaker and friend, John Forte. John is probably best known for writing and producing songs for The Fugees and their multi-platinum record The Score, and for his subsequent collaborations with Wyclef Jean. After huge success as a producer in the late 90s and following the tough unsuccessful (in John's mind at the time) release of his first album, Poly Sci, John went into a deep isolation. Then when an opportunity presented itself for him to work as a middleman connecting people who were acting as drug couriers, John took it. His focus was less on the work he was doing and more on what he could do with the money he was making – make more music. In July of 2000, Forté was arrested at Newark International Airport. As he explained to GQ magazine back in 2022, “I was picking up two carriers who had already been cooperating in a controlled sting, because they'd been caught and apprehended with 14 kilograms of liquid cocaine,” he says. He was sentenced to the mandatory minimum of 14 years and incarcerated at FCI Loretto, a low-security federal prison in Pennsylvania. With friends like Carly Simon and with support from an unlikely ally then Senator Orin Hatch from Utah, Forte's case was presented to President George W Bush for commutation and his sentence was commuted. After serving 7 years, John was finally free. John left prison and went on to do what he was always called to do – make music. For more than two decades, John has produced solo albums and a myriad of collaborative projects. John is currently composing the score and writing/producing the soundtrack for the forthcoming “Kerouac's Road: Beat of a Nation” for Universal, he also recently scored the forthcoming 6-part HBO series “Eyes on the Prize”. John's music has also been featured in films and television, including the Emmy-nominated “Momentum Generation” for HBO. John also created The Brooklyn Nets inaugural theme song back in 2012, a very personal thing for him as a Brooklyn native. The film, The Russian Winter, was released in 2012, following John's concert tour through Russia while exploring his life up until then. A second film about John's life is currently in production, Settling the Score. John is also very involved in prison reform and social justice initiatives – all while he is enjoying his life as a father of two living on Martha's Vineyard. In this two-part interview – John and I talk about his upbringing, his incredible career, his time in prison, his incredible commutation by President Bush and all the amazing work he has accomplished since then - not to mention the wonderful life he has built – savoring the simple pleasures in life like fishing and being a Dad, while writing, making music and producing films. John's story is one of promise, hope, redemption, and love. His life and example move and inspire me - I know it will you too... In the midst of the Russian Winter, a German military unit turned the estate of Leo Tolstoy into a field hospital. In his latest novel, prize-winning author Steven Conte has used this true moment in history to create a grand tale of conflict and romance.

The German Sixth Army was facing Six Russian armies in an attack that took the German's by surprise as Operation Uranus unfolded in the third week of November 1942. The Romanians were not as surprised as the Germans because they'd been warning General Paulus and OKW headquarters about signs of the build-up for weeks. And we know that Luftwaffe General Von Richtfhofen had also reported on the signs but Paulus and Hitler seemed to be of the opinion that whatever it was – the signs of tanks and infantry building up across the Don to the north west of Stalingrad would not be significant. The Germans had no idea that General Zhukov's plan was far more audacious than the usual Russian Winter offensive. Zhukov planned to encircle the Sixth Army and trap them inside Stalingrad. And as we heard last episode, the Don Army Group under Rokossovsky burst through the Romanians while the South West Army Group under Vatutin struck out towards Kalach. And then on the 20th the Stalingrad Army Group under Yeremenko which had crossed the Volga in small groups, launched the left horn of the Operation and headed North East towards Kalach. This means that the three Russian Fronts – the north, South West Army group and Stalingrad Army Group had over one million men against a similar number of Germans, Italians and Romanians along with other axis battalions. The Russians now had 900 tanks against the Germans 700 – many of which were unserviceable. Zhukov had gathered 13000 guns against Paulus' 10 000 and around 1 100 planes against von Richthofen's 1 200.

Moscow trucked in snow for New Year's Eve celebrations this week, due to the warmest Moscow December in over 130 years. But how do the Russians feel?
Bundle up! We're going to Russia! In this episode, Geoff retells the story of Morozko, Russia's Father Frost. And in return Katrina repeatedly traumatizes him with various tales of Snegurochka, the snowmaiden. We discuss the kind/unkind girl tale type and how the Russian people stuck it to the man by disguising critiques of the Soviet Union among innocent-seeming stories. And in a bit of a tangent, Geoff forces Katrina to recount a personal story of the time she was almost arrested in Russia for antiquities smuggling.
It's mid June 1901. Winter in the Southern Hemisphere and in the Highveld or high plains of South Africa that means bitterly cold nights where the temperature can dip well below freezing. As I write, this, the temperature outside has dipped to 4 degrees centigrade in Johannesburg - or 39 degrees farenheit. Yes, its nothing like Siberia or Canada, but this is Africa and these kinds of temperatures catch the uniformed off-guard. It gets much colder in other parts of South Africa. In the Cape Province, the town of Sutherland is the coldest in the country with mid-winter lows that can drop to below -20 centigrade or -4 farenheit and where 3 feet of snow can fall. The British Army was not ready for these extremes, as the German army was not ready for the Russian Winter of 1941/2. While South Africa's high plains winter is nothing like Russia's, the point is the military underestimated the weather. The British were conducting what were known as Drives with columns of thousands of troops riding or marching across the veld rounding up small groups of Boers who were trying to continue the guerrilla war. While nights and early mornings can be bitterly cold, during the day temperatures rise to above 20 degrees Centigrade or 68 Fahrenheit, and it becomes extremely dry. Not quite the Atacama, but dry enough. Most of South Africa is a summer rainfall region, except for the Western Cape which has a Mediterranean climate, very similar to the San Francisco area of California. So Winter has come to the Anglo-Boer war and for many British soldiers its their second on the veld. The Boers meanwhile, have slowed their action with the lack of water for their horses and feed that has disappeared from the veld. General de la Rey for example has sent most of his men home and told them to wait out the winter for a renewal of guerrilla warfare in Spring. De la Rey heads off to join General Christiaan de Wet who is still fighting along with die hard followers of around one hundred burghers who had made it their mission to cause as much trouble as possible for the British in the Orange Free State. However, between 5th June and 20th June 1901 freezing weather had made their mission painful, and deadly. They were not alone. As I'll explain, a blizzard that was about to sweep across the high veld would lead to deaths on all sides, not least the civilians cooped up in the Concentration Camps. That's the contradiction that is South Africa. The dry winters are interspersed with icy cold fronts that are driven across the sub-continent all the way from the Antarctic, bringing frozen moisture that leaves high ground covered in snow.
