On Christmas Eve December 2020, the World Health Organisation named Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and health inequities as 2 of the 10 global health threats to track in 2021. In 2019, we worked with the Health Quality and Safety Commission (HQSC) and PHARMAC to see how we can tackle both in Aotearoa New Zealand. The results of this work have just been published in the New Zealand Medical Journal, so we wanted to dedicate this episode of Inside the Nudge Unit to it.  Peer-reviewed articles allow us to present the rigorous work that goes into running a Behavioural Insights (BI) project. However, journal articles often remove the work from its broader context and leave little space for describing the tribulations that go into running BI trials. In this episode, we cover the story of how the trial developed, and how it built on our earlier work in the UK and the work done by the Behavioural Economics Research Team in the Australian Department of Health (BERT) and the Behavioural Economics Team of the Australian government (BETA).  We discuss how health inequities in Aotearoa New Zealand meant that we couldn't just copy the letters used in the UK and Australia, and take a quick detour into the replication crisis. You'll hear from Michael Hallsworth, who led the work in the UK, Janice Wilson, the CEO of the HQSC, Rawiri Jansen, a GP and member of the project's working group, and Nathan Chapell, who developed the letters we used in the project.  Further reading If you would like to read more about health inequities in New Zealand, you can read the paper mentioned by Rawiri Jansen here, as well as its follow up here. You can also read about the follow up to the UK study here, and the follow up to the Australian study here.  If you are interested in learning more about the replication crisis, we would recommend this article. And if you would like to learn more about issues related to generalising studies from one area to another, we recommend you read this. Chapter 5 of Behavioral Insights, which was co authored by Michael Hallsworth (along with Elspeth Kirkman) also gives an overview of the issues discussed.  Thanks to the large team of people who were involved in the project, especially Janice Wilson, Catherine Gerard, Richard Hamblin, Carl Shuker, Janet Mackay, Rawiri McKree Jansen, Richard Medlicott, Aniva Lawrence, Sally Roberts, Jan White and Leanne Te Karu.  Music by Rich O'Brien https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1m3zn3SHmMh3vuR13hkLCP?si=e9e2193372664b6b Production by Alex Gyani.  Editing by Pixelife Studios.

Sally Roberts of Wrestle Like a Girl shares “How the world of sport can teach girls that the world is theirs.”   Sports came out of a tough choice to either participate in a sport after school or go to Juvenile Detention. Sally choose wrestling as an outlet for her anger, getting along with the opposite gender and how to walk with confidence. Confronting challenges head-on was a way to not give others power. You may see gender but what you need to see is we are all athletes As a physical & emotional outlet for her depression joined the military During her time in Afghanistan became impacted by how little girls enamored American women. Created Wrestle like a Girl to be an advocate for lil girls Teaching the sport of wrestling to show women the world is theirs Working with high schools to bring more sanctioned opportunities for girls to wrestle. There needs to be a culture shift that girls can wrestle girls OR equality that girls can wrestle regardless. Has found that the opportunity generates the interest. Spreading the word through empowerment camps. After watching Dangal a few months ago, both of us were very excited to speak to Sally Roberts from Wrestle Like a Girl. Sally’s upbringing wasn’t easy and she had to resort to antisocial behaviour to deal with all the complex emotions she was facing as a young teen. But ultimately, she didn’t let any of that get in the way of her dreams. She joined her school wrestling club and was the ONLY girl wrestling at the time in her region. With the support of her coaches and teammates, she persevered and got into the national and world championships medal table. However, life hit her hard again when she didn’t make it to the Olympic team by just one place. From then to Afghanistan to everything she has achieved today is an outcome of her perseverance throughout the difficult circumstances life threw at her. Enjoy!

On Episode 348 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, host Jason Bryant returns to talk with Sally Roberts of Wrestle Like A Girl. On July 29, Wrestle Like A Girl held the Glitter into Gold Gala in Colorado Springs and a major news bombshell was dropped. During the presentation, Meg Stevens, the AD at Averett University in Danville, Virginia, was shown telling the crowd that Averett had signed on as the 10th NCAA member institution to pledge its support to women's wrestling. It became real. Roberts will explain what went into the bid submission for the NCAA Emerging Sports status and what the timeline is and when Wrestle Like A Girl and the wrestling community can find out if the plan to bring women's wrestling to the NCAA will become a reality. Sally Roberts has been there, done that. On Episode 289 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Roberts, a two-time World bronze medalist, talks about her new non-profit organization, Wrestle Like A Girl, a group focused on growing females in sport and life. A native of Washington, Roberts found wrestling as a way to keep herself out of trouble -- like real trouble. Wrestling prior to the world of Cadet and Junior Championships in Fargo and in an era where college wrestling for women was still in its infancy, wrestling led her to World Championships as well as a career in the Army's World Class Athlete Program. Roberts explains what WLAG is about, who else is involved and how they are looking to empower girls all over the country and the world through wrestling and sports.
