Beacon-based project helps girls worldwide Finding a good sports bra isn't easy if you're a female wrestler in the Alaskan village of Savoonga on Saint Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea. But it's recently become easier because of Sarah Dwyer-Shick, a Beacon resident who founded the nonprofit Sports Bra Project to supply girls with otherwise limited access to the garments because of logistics, culture or economics. The bras sent to the Savoonga wrestlers, who live 34 miles from Russia, are among 20,000 the project has distributed to 16 U.S. states and 35 countries since 2015. "People often donate new and used baseballs, basketballs, soccer balls and cleats," says Dwyer-Shick, a former high school and college athlete who is director of coaching and recreation for the East Fishkill Soccer Club. "But sports bras need to be new and it's often one of those pieces of sports equipment that is forgotten." That's because women's sports at all levels are mostly run and coached by men, says Dwyer-Shick. "Breasts are not something you talk about with your male coach. We want those in leadership to understand that you give the boys compression shorts and jockstraps, and you give the girls a bra. It's the same thing." The organization collects bras from drives organized by organizations such as the Marist College women's basketball team or the Seattle women's pro soccer club, or by individuals such as the Manhattan teenager who collected more than 200 for her bat mitzvah project. Dwyer-Shick founded the Sports Bra Project after traveling with Kickin' Back, a Hudson Valley charity, to distribute sports equipment in Namibia, in southern Africa. On a whim, she brought 40 sports bras that she had purchased at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. While intended for girls in rural areas, she also gave them to members of the national soccer team. "There are a lot of countries where they're just adding women's soccer programs and they're underfunded," she says. The Sports Bra Project has since provided bras to five national soccer teams. Dwyer-Shick distributes the bras from a one-room office in a building on Henry Street in Beacon. Aside from one part-time administrator, all involved, including the founder, are volunteers. "We want to normalize the needs and experiences of female athletes," she says. "Talking about the sports bra as a piece of equipment does that." A sports bra can be life-changing for a teenage girl, notes Tela O'Donnell Bacher, a high school wrestling coach who lives in Homer, Alaska, and distributes bras for the project. The only child of a single mother, she showed interest in sports in the sixth grade. An aunt recognized the need and gave her a Nike bra for Christmas. "It was teal with black piping," Bacher says. "I thought, 'Oh, my god, this is the coolest thing.' " The bra gave her the confidence to become a wrestler, and she went on to earn a spot on the first U.S. women's Olympic wrestling team, which competed in the 2004 games in Athens, Greece. Bacher, who also works with the nonprofit Wrestle Like a Girl, attends Alaska wrestling competitions. When she sees a girl competing in a regular bra, she offers the coach a sports bra. Most male coaches don't speak to their athletes about sports bras, she said. "It's a difficult conversation to have," she says. But many coaches later contact her and ask for more bras. In the past five years, Bacher has distributed about 600 sports bras in Alaska for the project and another 200 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, where she traveled for a girls' wrestling event. "We get to be sports-bra fairy godmothers to all these girls and give them all these opportunities to feel comfortable in their skin while they do their sport," she says. Then, we cover rumors of a military coup headed by Trump, and even get in a word about the pro-palestinian protests trying to take over a DNC building. And finally, we cover the issue of how to wrestle with God. That's right WWE, we teach how to wrestle with GOD HIMSELF.

Obedience is hard. Just because we know that God is good, doesn't mean that submission is easy. It doesn't mean that we don't have to struggle. The good news is that God welcomes our wrestling. Jesus Himself wrestled before giving His life to the Cross and there is so much we can learn from that.

From Kiki: Women's Senior's Freestyle Wrestling is somewhat difficult to talk about to a general (read: non-wrestling fan) audience because of the complex structure of the pool of wrestlers, which comes from high school, college, and clubs. One of my goals is to create women's amateur wrestling trading cards, so fans and kids in general can get to know the greats, like Clarissa Chun (now coaching at Iowa) and Tamyra Mensah-Stock. A good reference for all American Wrestling is USA Wrestling. For example, the most recent team going to the most recent Pan-Am Games can be found by searching for "2022 USA Wrestling Pan-Am Games," but it's a list of the three teams, not just Senior Women's Freestyle. Or click here. This makes me think we should interview some Women's Wrestling luminaries in our future podcast! For now, the point was to explain what a team leader is, but there's so much more to say about women wrestlers. For those interested, read Wrestle Like a Girl by Jamie Moffatt & Craig Sesker.

Double Olympic bronze medal wrestler Sally Roberts founded Wrestle Like A Girl in 2016 to provide opportunities for girls to take up the sport while empowering them to do much more beyond the mat.  Given her background enduring a challenging childhood which saw Sally struggling with petty crime she was offered the choice of juvenile detention or find an after school sport.  Hence her introduction to wrestling and the start of what was to become an Olympic career and service as a U.S. Army combat veteran.  Once she retired from the sport at the age of 36 Sally decided to use her experience and skills to help girls find their way in wrestling and to give them a platform that would empower them in all walks of life.  Sally explains how the organization has evolved, the progress they have made to expand the sport, and what their goals are for 2020 and beyond. Sally Roberts of Wrestle Like a Girl shares “How the world of sport can teach girls that the world is theirs.”   Sports came out of a tough choice to either participate in a sport after school or go to Juvenile Detention. Sally choose wrestling as an outlet for her anger, getting along with the opposite gender and how to walk with confidence. Confronting challenges head-on was a way to not give others power. You may see gender but what you need to see is we are all athletes As a physical & emotional outlet for her depression joined the military During her time in Afghanistan became impacted by how little girls enamored American women. Created Wrestle like a Girl to be an advocate for lil girls Teaching the sport of wrestling to show women the world is theirs Working with high schools to bring more sanctioned opportunities for girls to wrestle. There needs to be a culture shift that girls can wrestle girls OR equality that girls can wrestle regardless. Has found that the opportunity generates the interest. After watching Dangal a few months ago, both of us were very excited to speak to Sally Roberts from Wrestle Like a Girl. Sally’s upbringing wasn’t easy and she had to resort to antisocial behaviour to deal with all the complex emotions she was facing as a young teen. But ultimately, she didn’t let any of that get in the way of her dreams. She joined her school wrestling club and was the ONLY girl wrestling at the time in her region. With the support of her coaches and teammates, she persevered and got into the national and world championships medal table. However, life hit her hard again when she didn’t make it to the Olympic team by just one place. From then to Afghanistan to everything she has achieved today is an outcome of her perseverance throughout the difficult circumstances life threw at her. Enjoy!

One of my favorite parts of podcasting in the Veteran space is learning about what Veterans are doing in their communities and their industries. This week we hear from Army Veteran Sally Roberts, founder of Wrestle Like a Girl. Sally was a resident at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center for eight years during which time she was a 3-time national champion, 2003 World Cup Champion, 2003 & 2005 World Bronze Medalist and a 2008 Olympic Alternate. She served six years in the Army as a Special Operations soldier where she volunteered for deployment to Afghanistan. She was also a member of the Army’s prestigious World Class Athlete Program and represented both the U.S. Army and Team USA in elite athletic competitions. Sally joins the podcast to share her experience in the Army and her efforts with Wrestle Like a Girl, advocating for girls and women across the United States to be afforded opportunities to participate in wrestling.

Sally Roberts has been there, done that. On Episode 289 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Roberts, a two-time World bronze medalist, talks about her new non-profit organization, Wrestle Like A Girl, a group focused on growing females in sport and life. A native of Washington, Roberts found wrestling as a way to keep herself out of trouble -- like real trouble. Wrestling prior to the world of Cadet and Junior Championships in Fargo and in an era where college wrestling for women was still in its infancy, wrestling led her to World Championships as well as a career in the Army's World Class Athlete Program. Roberts explains what WLAG is about, who else is involved and how they are looking to empower girls all over the country and the world through wrestling and sports.
