In Episode 132 of White Canes Connect, hosts Michelle McManus and David Goldstein welcome Shawn Welker, founder of Visual Eyes Access, a low-cost visual interpreting service with a unique approach. Shawn shares how his background in accessibility and mobility training gives him a deeper understanding of blind users' needs, setting his service apart from other platforms like Aira and Be My Eyes. Shawn discusses the evolution of visual interpreting, the limitations of mainstream services, and why affordability and personalization are key to his mission. He explains how Visual Eyes Access offers on-demand and scheduled interpreting at $1/minute, with rollover minutes and community-funded options like earning minutes through purchases in his online pet supply shop. He also teases upcoming initiatives, including a city-based navigation pilot and app integration with smart glasses, allowing hands-free assistance via WhatsApp. Shawn is scaling his business with a pool of trained student volunteers and emphasizes a client-first, access-centered philosophy. Listeners of the podcast get a 50% discount on his 30-minute trial session by mentioning the show.  This episode highlights how tech, heart, and community can intersect to build better access, one client at a time. In episode 284 of iCantCU, I talk about another hiccup with my psoriatic arthritis meds—this time, the pharmacy wanted over two grand out of pocket. Spoiler: I said no. Taltz has helped a bit, but not $2,000-a-month helpful. So now I'm back on the hunt for something else that won't break the bank or mess me up with scary side effects. I also share some sad news: we lost Stan Ingram, a fellow blind entrepreneur in the Business Enterprise Program here in PA. That means one less BEP operator and a big question mark about what happens to his spot. Plus, my friend Ken's dad passed, and I send love to his family. It's been a rough week. I share the fact that my other podcast, White Canes Connect, is currently ranked #19 on the 100 Best Visually Impaired Podcasts! So much for the false rumors being spread about the show. 8000 Promises: Saying Yes to God's Promises for your one beautiful and precious life.

Erin Nestico is a former elementary teacher who uses her education background to speak on dating, domestic violence and the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships. God saved her physically from an abusive relationship, and she is passionate about helping teens and young adults enter into safe, loving partnerships. She and her husband, Chris live in Adams, New York with their four children and a menagerie of pets. After 12 years in an abusive relationship, Erin was able to find her way out. In this episode of 8000 Promises, Erin and I talk about how Erin was able to leave the relationship in which she was trapped for so long, how online resources helped end the isolation created by abuse and how she is still learning to trust God's timing in all stages of life. Erin shares how learning about certain terminology helped her realize that what was happening was not an okay way to live. We hope this discussion helps shine light into the darkness of domestic violence, a common problem that affects an estimated 10 million people every year. Erin says that, "Love Doesn't' Destroy, was born out of the mess of my abusive relationship and the burning desire for teens and young women to know what I did not know at their age." This includes: Our value and worth come from God and not a relationship status God will give us the desires of our heart when we trust His timing The enemy will always try to make us feel less than, but we must combat those lies with God's truth knowing the differences between unhealthy and healthy relationships tools for establishing boundaries and ending relationships with toxic people Additional resources mentioned in the episode to help when in need or to learn more: 8000 Promises with Michelle McManus of BabybeBrave episode 3 includes some discussion on the topic of gaslighting. 8000 Promises: Saying Yes to God's Promises for your one beautiful and precious life.

Michelle McManus didn't think she'd ever be leading a public advocacy movement, and yet her online presence showcases the power of her healing journey. Her life speaks to the truth that we can do beautiful things, even when we have hard histories. Michelle Marie, also known as BabyBeBrave_,is an international adoptee, born in Romania. She lived in an orphanage and was adopted at the age of two by an American family. When she was eight, her parents changed her life forever when they shared they had adopted her. From that point on, her questions were unending. In high school, Michelle began to search for her birth mother. It was five years later that with the help of a private investigator she found her birth mother, but their reunion was very different from the one Michelle had longed for. The initial response was one of rejection, and Michelle has spent many years carrying and trying to process that pain. A recent discovery of a letter her birth mother wrote to her is starting to change the narrative, and they are now in reunion. In our interview, Michelle shares how her deep anguish led her to an attempt at taking her life. Yet, in the midst of that pain, Michelle decided to live. She also decided to create. She says, "When I started Baby Be Brave, I met a whole community of other Adoptees which I never knew existed. The love and support they provide me not only makes me feel like I belong but has inspired me to know my purpose in life. My struggles of being adopted and the struggles of my fellow Adoptees have led me to become an advocate for the Adoptee community. I want to be that person I wish I had growing up for others who are adopted. In addition, Baby Be Brave wants to focus on helping the entire Adoption Triad (Adoptees, Adoptive Parents, and Birth Parents) by providing as much support through support groups and by building a safe and loving community. There will always be trauma that comes with adoption, but I'm making it my life's mission to help eliminate as much trauma as possible for all included in the adoption process." We do talk about some potentially triggering topics during this episode including conception by rape, sexual assault, the trauma that comes from adoption, and suicide. This is an excerpt from episode 78 featuring the last 25 minutes of my conversation with leading holistic farmers, Jeff Pow and Michelle McManus. We explore what it takes to regenerate country, community and custodianship. And to kick that off, I raise a section of the recent popular TV series here in Australia, Fight for Planet A, that had me squirming in my seat. We then delve into some fascinating work around the health of ancient cultures relative to our modern ‘lifestyle' afflictions, and how we might harness the ‘best of both worlds'. Jeff Pow and Michelle McManus are bringing chicken farming back to earth, and playing a part in rebirthing opportunities for communities and regions everywhere. They'll say they're doing nothing particularly new, but they're finding a way to regenerate country, community and economy in an unprecedented context of crises. For them, most recently, an horrific bushfire devastated their historic Southampton Homestead and Farm. We explore their soulful and award-winning journey of recovery, as they form part of a leading trend in farming – tending healthy people, animals and country, while reclaiming the terms of trade. That means taking back responsibility for the growing, processing and value-adding of all the food on the farm, and bringing it directly to the community. Now Jeff is standing for parliament at this month's state election and, much like the Haggerty's in episode 68, they're inviting the return of farmers and others back on country, to scale the regeneration together, rather than as individual empires. They're “growing food and farmers”, reclaiming the story of people and nature from Hobbesian nightmares, and restoring custodianship on country as our way out - creating the new system, as a means of emerging from the old. This conversation was recorded on location at Southampton Homestead and Farm on 3 December 2020. Cover photo: Jeff on the farm (pic: Anthony James). It was so inspiring to interview fellow adoptee Michelle McManus for Episode 17 of the Adopt Yourself Podcast! She shares her courageous story of how she went from thinking the rape of her birthmother was her fault to accepting it as it is while choosing to turn her pain into inspiration to help others Michelle explains how she navigated her emotions learning she was adopted at 8 years old which led to childhood bullying for being adopted resulting self-bullying. As she became more curious about her origins she hired a private investigator to find her biological families when she was only in high school. She was then challenged with depression after learning she is the product of rape + that her birthmother did not desire to grow a relationship with her, yet through all of these circumstances she’s been able to find closure + love for herself through accepting it all just as it is As many adoptees can relate, even though Michelle comes from a family that made her feel loved she still faced the feelings of not belonging, codependency, + people pleasing We connected through social media earlier this year + bonded about our adoptee healing journeys. She is a passionate, determined, + courageous woman who I know will inspire so many fellow adoptees to find closure by learning to accept their circumstances + choose to find love for themselves just as they are Her piece of advice for adoptees: “It is absolutely ok to have mixed feelings about your adoption. You can be happy, sad, you can feel disconnected from your family but that doesn’t mean that you don’t love them. You have the right to search for your family without feeling like you’re betraying your adoptive family. There is no right or wrong way to feel. There are others around you, you have the right to answers + if you get answers that you don’t want you have to accept it + move on. Closure for me wasn’t finding love from my birthparents it was finding love for myself.” And my favorite quote of hers on this episode: “I thought me finding my birth family was going to be my closure but it wasn’t. My closure was me accepting what it was and finally loving myself and that’s when I found my true closure” ACTIVATION WARNING: On this episode we discuss her birthmother’s rape + our experiences of suicidal thoughts Connect with Michelle on Instagram @babybebrave_24 If you’re an adoptee, birthparent, or adoptive parent + you desire to share your story on the podcast about how adoption has impacted your life or how you’ve chosen to Adopt Yourself then fill out this form www.alijameson.com/podcast or contact Ali at adoptyourself@gmail.com. In 2003 Michelle McManus shot to fame as the winner of the second series of Pop Idol. Throughout the series she stood out for her powerhouse soul voice. But she also got huge amounts of press coverage for her weight.   Today plus-size is celebrated, body positivity is embraced and everyone is encouraged to be who they are. In 2003 this was not the case. She was pilloried, debated, vilified and criticised every day in the media for the duration of the competition. But it never through her off course and she won with 58% of the public vote.  You would imagine that when an audience has spoken and a winner declared that the powers that be would just accept it. But that isn’t what happened. When she was announced as the winner one of the judges stormed off the set on live television as she was about to reprise the song. Michelle now lives back in Scotland where she works constantly as a radio and television host and of course as a singer. But there is also another side to Michelle. In 2012 she took her first one-woman show to the Edinburgh fringe and has been a sell-out success every year since. The shows are mix of comedy and cabaret and she plays every night of August to packed audiences at the Stand Comedy Club. (I saw her show last year and it was absolutely hilarious!) Distinct from researchers who carry out engagement as part of their work and unwilling to be teachers, these people roam the Earth, dispensing wisdom and fun, often with a healthy dose of foam and fire. But, 15 years on from the Millennium projects that spawned them, what state is the industry in? Are they providing a clarity beyond more traditional academics, or have they created a whole mystic lore of their own? Join Ali Floyd, Science Engagement Officer at the National Museum of Scotland, as he explores some of the not-quite-truths he has experienced in the business.
