Erik Childress and Peter Sobczynski run down titles you can get on physical media this week and, not gonna lie, there's a lot of baggage. There's the Mick Jagger film that say on the shelf for two years along with Lindsay Lohan's collaboration with Paul Schrader and William Friedkin's infamous Al Pacino murder mystery set within the gay community. Not to mention John Wayne playing Genghis Khan and the poor timing for an Eric Red horror film. But even controversy can be put aside for cinema sunshine. You can now get Milos Forman's Mozart film in its original theatrical incarnation. Maybe you don't even remember the issue parents had with one of the loveliest coming-of-age films of the ‘90s. And why would you say anything controversial about Carol Reed's masterpiece? All that plus Guillermo Del Toro's debut and the genius of poking fun at documentaries on this week's Blu-ray show. 0:00 – Intro 3:13 - Criterion (Performance 4K, Cronos 4K) 22:43 - Vinegar Syndrome (The Joy of Sex, Virtuosity 4K, The Canyons) 48:18 - Arrow (Cruising 4K) 1:05:54 - Kino (The Conqueror, Graveyard Shift 4K, Body Parts 4K) 1:24:14 - Sony (My Girl 4K) 1:37:39 - LionsGate (The Third Man 4K) 1:44:22 - Warner (Amadeus 4K) 1:55:51 – New Television on Blu-ray (Noble House, Documentary Now: The Complete Series) 2:01:01 - New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray (Hard Truths) 2:05:13 – New Blu-ray Announcements

Bad Moon, written and directed by Eric Red, is an excellent Saturday afternoon werewolf flick that packs a fair amount of action and suspense. The practical and animatronic effects are standout, along with Primo, the german shepherd and star of the film. While not in our top three of werewolf films it does garner our respect. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grimandbloody/support

Timothy's choice this week and he's gone for the 1986 thriller, The Hitcher. Directed by Robert Harmon and written by Eric Red, the film's production began with a script that was compelling enough to draw the interest of producer Edward S. Feldman. Rutger Hauer was cast as the enigmatic and terrifying hitchhiker, John Ryder, delivering a performance that would become iconic in the thriller and horror genres. C. Thomas Howell played the young protagonist, Jim Halsey, whose cross-country drive turns into a nightmarish battle for survival. The film's casting was critical, as the chemistry and tension between Hauer and Howell carried much of the film's suspenseful and psychological weight. Filming took place primarily in the desolate landscapes of the American Southwest, which provided a stark and haunting backdrop that enhanced the film's eerie and isolated atmosphere. The production faced numerous logistical challenges, including shooting high-speed car chases and violent confrontations in remote locations. Despite a modest budget, the crew's resourcefulness and the director's vision ensured that the film maintained high production values. The cinematography by John Seale captured the vast, empty highways and the sense of foreboding that permeated the film. Under Vacation in Europe besökte sköldpaddorna varken Sverige eller Finland, men däremot Norge.

For our first episode recorded in 2023, we look at two films from writer/director Eric Red! We start off with "Cohen and Tate" from 1988, starring Roy Scheider and Adam Baldwin in a tale of two hitmen sent to retrieve a young boy and bring him in for questioning by the mob. It's a bit of a mess, with cartoony performances but it has enough good ideas and moments that it's ultimately satisfying. We follow that up with the entertaining "Bad Moon" from 1996, which stars Michael Pare and Mariel Hemingway as a brother and sister. At the start of the film, the brother is bitten by a werewolf and the family dog, which is the real standout actor in the movie, is none too happy about this dark presence in the home. It's fun despite its flaws and has a fantastic werewolf suit! We then proceed to list the various things we've been watching for fun. Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. The 1992 ALIEN 3 is the ideal example of a Studio clusterf*ck. The development/pre-production process of that picture was a fiasco of epic proportions with way too many cooks in the kitchen. A slew  of writers had a shot at it, namely: William Gibson, Eric Red, David Twohy and John Fasano.    And before David FIncher took the helm, Vincent Ward and Renny Harlin were at some point slated to direct. Pop that Pop Corn and enjoy the ride as we take you through the long and tortuous journey that ALIEN 3 went through to finally hit the silver scream.

As she prepared to direct her first solo feature, future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow wanted to film a Western movie but she found it difficult to secure financing and a studio to back up her vision. So alongside co-writer Eric Red, who also penned the horror film “The Hitcher,” Bigelow shifted gears to combine her idea for a modern Western with the vampire genre that had become increasingly popular in recent years, especially after the success of “Fright Night” as well as another film called “The Lost Boys” that was set for release that same year. Bigelow didn't want to make the same kind of movie as traditional vampire stories steeped in gothic or even romantic themes. Instead, her interpretation was much darker and grimier than most vampire stories — in fact she never even uses the word vampire in her film. Set against the dusty backdrop of the southwest, a young cowboy named Caleb falls for a beautiful girl named Mae but he soon discovers that one kiss from her comes along with a deadly invitation to join her family…In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we're going to black out the car windows and crank up the Tangerine Dream as we discuss the 1987 classic “Near Dark”…

This week's case involves a young man from Nashville, Tennessee who was only 24 when he was murdered in front of a local store called the ET Market at 4000 Gallatin Pike in Nashville. On December 7, 2017. Eric McClendon left his house to go to a local store. He would unknowingly say goodbye to his mother Susie McClendon for the last time. He left with a friend named Gregory “Boo” Smith who was 18. Sometime between the time the men left and Eric's shooting, at least one other man climbed inside the car with Eric and his friend. While in the parking lot, the passenger turned around and shot Eric who was sitting in the backseat. According to Eric's mother, there was video footage from the store. She asked someone from the store to describe what he saw on the video. He said the footage showed a man turning around and shooting Eric. The driver, Gregory Smith was also shot. After the shooting, the shooter exited the car and ran away. Eric's mother told me there was also another person who also exited the vehicle. Eric died from his injuries but Smith survived. Susie told me Smith witnessed Eric's killing since he was in the front seat with the shooter. However, no one has been charged with killing Eric. Do you know who killed Eric? Do you have any information about his killer? He was loved by his family and deserves justice. His daughter will grow up without ever knowing him. His mother will never be able to hug her son or tell him how much she loves him. If you have any information about Eric McClendon's homicide, please contact Crime Stoppers at (615) 742-7463 or Sgt. Hinkle of the Nashville Police Department at (615) 862-7065. You can also visit the Justice for Red Facebook with additional information about Eric McClendon. Hey Sis, Uncle Ted is coming to visit for this week’s episode. We’re talking about Eric Red’s 1996 werewolf movie BAD MOON! Starring Mariel Hemingway, Michael Pare & Mason Gamble this creature feature is pretty good with great gore and practical effects but very short and falls victim to some pretty bad dialogue. We enjoy it! We talk the movie, a little about production and then discuss Eric Red’s legal woes. Sis, it’s a good time sis. Sis!

"Normal folks, they don't spit out bullets when you shoot ‘em, no sir!" When trying to figure out a way to stand out for her first solo directorial project, Kathryn Bigelow and her co-writer Eric Red decided to add elements of the vampire genre to the western they were developing. And thus, Near Dark was born. Unfortunately, her film came out a few months after the big vampire film of the year, The Lost Boys, and hers was lost in the shuffle. Despite that, her film still left enough of a mark that enabled her to get her career off the ground. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off the second part of our Kathryn Bigelow series with her 1987 film Near Dark. We talk about our expectations of a film marketed as a vampire western, and how well the movie actually meets them. We look at the trio of actors ported over from James Cameron's Aliens — Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, and Jenette Goldstein — and discuss how well they do here paired with the other actors. We debate the strengths of the film and the weaknesses, finding plenty of both, and argue about which outweigh the other. We chat about the vampire tropes introduced here and ponder if this film does anything new with the genre that we hadn't seen before. We discuss how Bigelow handles the camera, the lighting, the action and more throughout the film, seeing a clear line to some of her later films. And we ponder the penchant Hollywood writers seem to have with the way romance works so quickly in movies (it's shorthand, we get it, but seriously? Sometimes, it's too much.) It's a film that has problems that certainly weigh Pete's opinion of it down while Andy still finds it enjoyable despite its issues. Coming at the film from these two positions allows for a fantastic conversation, so check the movie out then tune in! The Next Reel — when the movie ends, our conversation begins. Site: http://www.audiobooks.com/podcast  | Email: podcast@audiobooks.com "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." — Edgar Allen Poe We've all heard of H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King, and Dean Koontz, but this week on the Audiobooks.com Podcast we're talking with the founder of Audio Realms, Fred Godsmark. As Halloween is just a couple days away, we thought it appropriate to bring on an expert in the field of horror, someone knowledgeable about the books and audiobooks currently popular in the genre, and get some insight into current trends and demographics surrounding fans of horror. Niche Books There are fans, and then there are true fans. The dedicated masses. The fanatics. The ones that will paint their faces, dress up like a mascot or character; the ones that go to conventions, host themed parties, and follow the object of their fanaticism around the country. These kinds of fans undoubtedly inspire companies like Audio Realms to not just exist, but to thrive. These kinds of fans, in fact, create companies like Audio Realms! Fred himself is an avid reader of the horror genre and dedicated to bringing the authors and stories he loves into the light. He mentions that stories by H.P. Lovecraft sell just as well now as they did 10 years ago, but he also says that new authors come about every year with fascinating stories to tell that don't get nearly the same attention as the pop culture horror authors do. To remedy this, Fred gives us a ton of recommendations to get a more thorough look into the genre of horror! At the forefront of his mind are Wolfland by Jonathan Janz, The Things That Are Not There by C. J. Henderson, and The Guns of Santa Sangre by Eric Red. Getting a Taste Audio Realms is currently working on a series of short story collections. Historically, Fred shares with us, the medium for horror was predominantly short stories. People would line up to buy these “old rags”! One such collection Audio Realms has produced is called Out of Tune, which has a really cool theme. They've taken a series of old ballads and wrote short stories to accompany them, and also a short explanation of the ballad. This collection was edited by Jonathan Mayberry. We've talked a couple times on the podcast about how the length of a podcast can be difficult to fully embrace. It's true that listening to an audiobook is often faster than reading it, but audiobooks that are 20-30 hours long is a big commitment. When it comes to a road trip, the longer the better! Short stories, on the other hand, are ideal for commutes that aren't quite of the same degree as a road trips. It could take 45 days to listen to a 30-hour audiobook, if your daily commute is 40 minutes. That's over 2 months! If you're someone who enjoys completing a task more quickly than that, then perhaps looking into Audio Realms' short story collections is a good idea for you! Watch for new collections from Audio Realms to get a taste of horror for yourself. What Are You Listening To We've heard from Fred, now we want to hear from you! What was on your audiobooks playlist for the advent of Halloween? Show us some love! Welcome to Dark Discussions podcast. Your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that's fantastic. In the mid 1980’s, horror films seemed to become derivative with releases of copy cats and sequels that were being pumped out as fast as they could. Both low budget filmmakers and studio executives saw dollar signs before they saw originality. Yet in 1986 screenwriter Eric Red came up with a tale that seemed to buck this shallow trend. Prior to writing Near Dark, the Kathryn Bigelow helmed vampire film, he burst upon the seen with his script for The Hitcher, a dark and psychologically brutal film. Directed by first time director Robert Harmon, the film divided critics more so than many films of the time. With its throwback story to such gritty movies as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and its twenty-years-too-soon foreshadowing of films such as Seven or Silence of the Lambs, folks such as Roger Ebert called it “diseased and corrupt” while Newsweek Magazine thought it to be superb. With a supporting role by Jeffrey DeMunn and starring box office draws of the time, C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Jason Leigh, the film became a cult classic because of the career defining role of Dutch actor Rutger Hauer. Known for playing disturbed characters in film, Rutger Hauer steals the movie as a sociopath that brings psychological chills in mannerisms and speech more so than any onscreen physical violence. Critics have analyzed and dissected the film. Topics as wide as split personality disorder, homophobic angst, and the fight between heaven and hell have been discussed as meanings behind the film. Dark Discussions studies the cult classic with special guest M.J. Preston, author of the horror novel The Equinox, and honor a film that co-host Eric has declared as one of the top ten best horror films of all time.
