Wake Wood (2009), The Wind (2018), Apostle (2018) Folk horror has its roots in tales of witches and paganism, stretching back centuries. In cinema, the term "folk horror" was first coined by Rod Cooper in Kine Weekly to describe the 1971 classic Blood on Satan's Claw. However, the themes that define folk horror—witchcraft, ancient rituals, and the eerie power of nature—have been present since the earliest days of film. A prime example is Benjamin Christensen's Häxan (1922), which delves into witchcraft and age-old rites. Regardless of its origins or definitions, folk horror has endured over time, weaving its way through the history of cinema. In recent decades, the genre has experienced a remarkable resurgence, not just in the United States but globally. This renewed interest may owe much to Kier-La Janisse's expansive 2021 documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, which shone a spotlight on the subgenre and sparked widespread conversation. With the recent release of Volume Two of Severin's All the Haunts Be Ours box sets, now seems the perfect time to explore some of the standout modern folk horror films from the past two decades. So, venture with us into the remote villages, pagan rites, and shadowy woods where all the horrors sit waiting for you in the dark corners where people rarely go. Films mentioned in this episode: Abigail (2024), Alucarda (1977), Apostle (2018), Birth/Re-birth (2023), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Cuckoo (2024), Dracula (2006), Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), Flesh and the Fiends (1960), Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024), Isolation (2005), Pet Sematary (1989), Rosemary's Baby (1968), Underworld (2003), Wake Wood (2009), The Wicker Man (1973), The Wind (2018), Witchfinder General (1968), Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched (2021), Zombie (1979)

Gather ‘round the fire in the woods for this nearly 5-hour journey into the heart of ALL THE HAUNTS BE OURS VOL. 2 with box set producer / curator Kier-La Janisse taking Andrew, Amy and David through every graphic detail of this impossibly massive undertaking. Understand why Andrew declares this session “a catharsis," while David calls the set, "a masterclass in curation and execution unlike any other in physical media and which should hopefully help to retire the woefully dated phrase 'Criterion-level'," as Amy cries, “this box set is the apotheosis of everything everyone has been working towards." Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode explore folk horror on screen. The genre is commonly associated with British film from the 70s, but Ellen and Mark investigate how it resonates across the globe and its resurgence over the last decade.. Ellen speaks to the author and director of the folk horror documentary, Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched, Kier-La Janisse about the first folk horror films, the hallmarks of the genre and folk horror's depiction of pastoral and urban settings. Ellen then talks to director Nikyatu Jusu about her recent film Nanny which won the Grand Jury prize at Sundance last year. They discuss how she uses West African folklore in the film and why she thinks folk horror is culturally specific. Mark talks to director Mark Jenkin about his upcoming film, Enys Men. They consider the film's relationship to Cornish identity and the landscape as well as why he prefers to call Enys Men a folk film rather than a folk horror film. And the director of some modern takes on folk horror such as The Witch and The Northman, Robert Eggers, recommends a couple of underseen folk horror gems. For all the glühwein and good cheer, mid-December also marks the darkest part of the year, when families around the world gather to watch their favorite holiday ghost story: A Christmas Carol. Easily the most famous spooky Yuletide movie, it is by no means the only one: Black Christmas was arguably the first American slasher movie; the mischievous creatures from Gremlins squealed their way into many hearts in 1984; and the Alpine Krampus has more credits to his name than Santa has reindeer. For generations, the heart of winter—not Halloween—was when we told unsettling stories around the fire, whether they featured the ghosts of our own pasts or Gryla the Icelandic ogre and her evil Yule cat. This week on Smarty Pants, writer and director Kier-La Janisse offers a primer on how these stories have found their way onto the screen, from annual BBC television specials to big-budget Hollywood bloodbaths.Go beyond the episode:Kier-La Janisse's Yuletide Terror, co-edited with Paul Corupe, is out of print, but her House of Psychotic Women, an “autobiographical topography of female neurosis in horror and exploitation films” was just released in an expanded editionJanisse's documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched is a thorough history of folk horror, which makes its way to the holidays with movies like Krampus (2015) and Rare Exports (2010), and wintry tales like Marketa Lazarová (1967), The White Reindeer (1952), Hagazussa (2017), and November (2017)You can watch the newest episode of the BBC's anthology series A Ghost Story for Christmas on Britbox. Discussed in this episode: The Stalls of Barchester (1971) and A Warning to the Curious (1972), both based on M. R. In honor of the 10th anniversary expanded edition of her iconic text House of Psychotic Women, we sat down with author Kier-La Janisse (also the award-winning documentary filmmaker of Woodlands Dark + Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror). Our connection was shaky (hence some spotty audio), but we asked Kier-La about the reception (then and now) of the book, which films readers should prioritize and why we're unlikely to see a HoPW documentary series in the future. Remakes can go a lot of different ways and this one doesn't surprise. What's great is the two films (original and 2006) lead us to a fascinating documentary from 2021, Kier-La Janisse's Woodland Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror, a wonderful examination of the Folk Horror genre from Great Britain through Eastern Europe, Mexico, Central & South America, and Asia. In Andrzej Żuławski's "Possession" (1981), Anna (Isabelle Adjani) and Marc (Sam Neill) are a married couple in turmoil. When Marc, some kind of international spy (it's never specified) comes home to West Berlin after a mission in East Berlin, he and Anna are on thin ice. Marc suspects she's having an affair and when he finds confirmation of this news, has a brief depressive spiral. Their son, Bob (Michael Hogben), seems to be the only thing keeping both of them in contact with each other, although he is severely neglected by both throughout the film. In Anna's absence, Marc clings to other women like Helen, Bob's teacher (also played by Adjani), who is Anna's double but with lighter hair, eyes, and a more easy-going attitude; and Margie, Anna's best friend who pops in as a surrogate caregiver when Marc needs her. In order to figure out WTF is going on with Anna, Marc decides to hire a detective to look into her whereabouts/affairs. What he finds is more than Marc could have ever predicted. Not only is Anna killing men, she's feeding parts of them to a monster that she is also fucking. The monster is a project and when “ready,” will become Marc's double … the version of him that Anna finds most palatable. The film's structure has been compared to that of a spiral staircase (a common visual in many Żuławski films, including this one) … at each new level, it builds on what is already there, transcending to something the same but different. Here are some things we mentioned during the episode and/or that we think you should check out: Alison Taylor's installment on "Possession" from the Devil's Advocates series (Be warned, they seem to print these books on demand, so the photos are potato quality but the text is excellent. I wish Liverpool University Press would just sell a PDF.) What do you get when you cross the Hollywood tropes surrounding mentally ill women with the can-do indie spirit of regional horror films? This episode, of course! Taking a cue from both Kier-La Janisse's "House of Psychotic Women" and Stephen Thrower's "Nightmare USA," Aria and Lori discuss the ways in which depictions of "female PsYcHoSiS" are represented in films that exist beyond the pearly gates of studio filmmaking, with explorations of "Pigs" (1973), "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" (1971), and "The Witch Who Came From the Sea" (1976).Audio clip from the trailer for "House of Psychotic Women" (aka "Blue Eyes of the Broken Doll") (1974). Noirvember continues with Austin Film Society lead programmer and exploitation genre fan Lars Nilsen, who dives into the muck and the grime, the farts and the fights, the stunts and the songs of his four Letterboxd favorites: Touch of Evil; The Switchblade Sisters, The General; and Phantom of the Paradise. Lars chats with hosts Gemma and Slim about his new memoir of the Alamo Drafthouse's Weird Wednesday series—Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday & The Birth Of The American Genre Film Archive—on sale now from Mondo. Also in the conversation: tiny men doing huge stunts, the cult of Jessica Harper, old folks and young folks partying together, the best genre film of 2021, shout-outs to Shudder and Kier-La Janisse, and aiming for that ‘car-crash experience' with cinema audiences. The woods are nature at its most feral. The deep, dark forest is the original home of the boogeyman, long before there were dark closets and basements and that space under your bed. The Folk Horror subgenre has gained a new audience as more young filmmakers exploit the fine line between the natural and the supernatural...and openly ask if there's a line at all. Filmmakers/authors discuss the movies they wish more people were familiar with.
It's a force more powerful than 1,000 H-bombs unleashed to devastate earth! What is? Our excitement at, for the final episode of BERGCAST Season One, not only the both of us being in the same place, but getting to meet Hammer archivist and Doctor Who Magazine editor Marcus Hearn in the headquarters of the BFI no less. Marcus enlightened us on why it took so long to make a third Quatermass (but why they kept trying), and who else could have played our pal Bernard. We touch on the awkward relationship that Quatermass has with the sex/colour/blood aesthetic of Hammer Horror and Babs Windsor's bra. We hear a tale of two Roy Bakers, and muse on whether the only things violated in this movie are trade descriptions. And we talk about the power of this film, and how the juxtaposition of the prosaic and the uncanny lend it its curious power. We're taking a break for a month or so now, as we get our Martians in a line for BERGCAST Season Two, where we'll be meeting a whole new set of guests, and going to the Quatermass Conclusion... and beyond. Thanks to our lovely engineer Emma, Andrea Kinnear, Toby Hadoke and Sarah Reuben of the BFI, and also Kier-La Janisse of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, without any of whom, as the saying goes, this would not have happened.
This episode is part one of our two-part series on perhaps the most mystifying moral panic in US history, the 1980s and early 90s 'Satanic Panic.' For this episode, Chelsey covers the rise of organized Satanism beginning in the late 60s, as well as the adversarial countercultures of the hippies and the metalheads, and their apparent Satanic crimes that would be hailed as proof of their evil, as well as proof that teens, as well as children, were in serious moral peril. Satan was allegedly hypnotizing the youth with secret messages in backwards rock songs, teaching them occult magic in Saturday morning cartoons, and causing suicides through a popular role-playing game, all while helping religion blur into politics for good. For part two Chelsey will cover what came next, a serious investigation into an imagined network of Satanic cults ritually abusing children in daycare centers all over the country. Chelsey will try to understand this shocking decade in history, why it happened, and the cultural issues it was really about. Part two is coming after the holidays. Check out Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s (http://www.spectacularoptical.ca/store/product/satanic-panic-pop-cultural-paranoia-in-the-1980s/) by editors Kier-La Janisse and Paul Corupe for further reading. In January, Jessica found out her brother Kevin was reading a book about the Satanic Panic and she thought it would be fun to sit down and have him walk her through the ins and outs of that era. Fear is one of the six basic universal emotions (the others are anger, disgust, happiness, sadness and surprise) and like all human emotions not easy to understand. Fear can be played upon, enjoyed, conquered. It is an obstacle to progress ("the only thing to fear is fear itself") and, as we stand at the kerb, it saves our lives every day. This series of The Essay brings you five essays on different aspects of fear.Kier-La Janisse is a writer and the Founder of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, and reflects on how educational films like Dark and Lonely Water, The Finishing Line and Signal 30 have scared more children more deeply than any horror feature film, and explains how - in mid-twentieth century America - fear was exploited to create an educational film boom.Producer Laura Thomas.
