“We're not just selling music. We're selling stories, connection, and discovery.” In this episode of For the Love of Vinyl, host Scott Orr sits down with Terry Cole—co-owner of Plaid Room Records in Loveland, OH — for a candid and insightful look at what it takes to run a successful record store in 2025. Presented by A to Z Media (http://atozmedia.com) From customer buying trends and pricing strategies to the legacy of “dollar bin” records and the reality of managing inventory, Terry shares it all. They also dive into the emotional connection people have with their collections, what records fly off the shelves (spoiler: Rumors still rules), and how Plaid Room blends in-store charm with a robust national web store. A must-listen for vinyl lovers, record store dreamers, and indie label nerds alike. Subscribe to FOR THE LOVE OF VINYL: http://otherrecordlabels.com/fortheloveofvinyl
In this episode, Scott Orr interviews Dean Harada, the founder of Lo'ihi Records, a new Hawaiian record label focused on avant-garde and progressive music from Hawaii. PRESENTED BY GROOVER - http://geni.us/groover USE COUPON CODE: OTHERRECORDLABELSVIP for 10% OFF! Here's what we discussed in this interview... The Meaning Behind Lo'ihi Records The label's name comes from the Lo'ihi seamount, a rising underwater volcano near Hawaii, symbolizing the growth of a unique music scene. The vision is to support artists who push creative boundaries rather than catering to tourist-driven Hawaiian music. Challenges of Running a Record Label The post-release phase has been one of the biggest challenges, with marketing and sustaining momentum after an album launch being particularly difficult. Social media has been a learning curve for Dean, as he had no prior experience before starting the label. Time management is crucial in balancing label operations with artistic passion. Philosophy and Mission of the Label Lo'ihi Records aims to showcase music that is endemic to Hawaii—unique and growing from the local scene rather than fitting into traditional or commercial Hawaiian music stereotypes. Dean emphasizes legacy building, inspired by his experience working on a historic Hawaiian fish pond restoration, knowing that some things take generations to fully materialize. The Importance of Physical Media & Vinyl Scott and Dean discuss how vinyl records act as cultural artifacts, lasting for decades and creating connections across generations. Dean sees vinyl releases as a way to preserve music beyond digital platforms. Overcoming Industry Hurdles Unlike mainstream Hawaiian music, avant-garde and experimental artists in Hawaii struggle to find platforms and audiences. Lo'ihi Records seeks to change that by fostering a local music community that supports progressive sounds. Marketing & Selling Vinyl Scott shares insights on post-release strategies, emphasizing that record labels need to treat each release like a product launch that requires continued promotion. They discuss the challenge of selling vinyl and the mindset shift needed to focus on long-term marketing rather than just new releases. This episode is an insightful look at the unique vision behind Lo'ihi Records and the realities of starting a record label in an unconventional market.
Albums are not usually conversations. Or if they are, they're pretty one way. Not so for Scott Orr's Miracle Body, a deeply comforting slice of jazz, new age, and sophisti-pop that melds together into one of 2024's most welcoming records. With his fluttering falsetto Orr ushers us in, sits us down, and offers tea and conversation. We talked to him below.

I haven't done a quiet indie songs mix since this time last year. This one started when I heard the latest Peter Gabriel track, Love Can Heal, which I adore. And the timing is good as I'll be seeing him in concert on Oct. 2nd. I've heard that in his live show he plays a lot of the new tracks he's been releasing monthly. Several months ago that would have given me pause because I didn't much care for the first few new tracks. But they have been getting better and better with each new song. The rest of the mix is just what it says it is - a collection of quiet indie tracks, all of them released in 2023. It includes some old faves like Neil Young, Kevin Morby, Slowdive, & Julie Byrne along with new to me artists like Scott Orr, The Finks, This Is The Kit, & Jörgen Kjellgren. Cheers! We had the pleasure of interviewing Timid, the Brave over Zoom video! Timid, the Brave is the solo moniker for Canadian songwriter Tim Selles. His 2011 self-titled debut EP, recorded with Scott Orr of Other Songs, was named one of iTunes Canada’s “Best Of” that year. After growing somewhat tired of the grind of solo performances and simple recordings, Selles recruited a handful of other Hamilton musicians to lend their talents to 2017’s LP, Firesale. The forthcoming record, Vuja De, builds on that communal transition, featuring Nate Wall (King Park) on drums and percussion, Ethan Rooney (The Good Hunters) on bass, and Gareth Inkster on pretty much everything else. Set for a Spring 2021 release, the upcoming record chronicles the cyclical nature of life, exploring the possibility of finding new meaning in familiar experiences. New singles "Black Cat" and "St. Maria" are out now! Full-length album to follow later in the year. We want to hear from you! What would it feel like to sit down with one of your *all-time favorite singers or songwriters and simply have an authentic one hour conversation with them? The album "Where I Lived and What I lived For" by Scott Orr quite literally changed my life. And for those that don't know, I love Folk & Americana music. And when I first heard this album, almost ten years ago, I literally played it for a month straight. To me, Scott's voice and lyrics hold the tension of "ache & comfort" and I had a chance to share how his album impacted me -- as well as finding out more about the man behind the music, on my last podcast interview of season 2. Hope you enjoy our conversation. x --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/togethergoodco/support

We always want to know how to get more listeners but perhaps an even harder task is to get those who are already listening to send you feedback or interact with your podcast in any way. How do podcasters have more conversations with their listeners, how do they know who is listening? Join Ray Ortega, Dave Jackson, Scott Orr, Steph Paige, and Kennedy to discuss getting more engagement with your listeners. Stories discussed on this Round Title: 38 percent of Americans listen to podcasts to improve their mood Main Takeaway: The value in podcasts is not just educational, what other benefits can we build in to the way we run our shows? Such as escaping their real world problems and improving their mood. What other types ‘f value’ can we give listeners? How about a sense of belonging and hope? URL: https://podnews.net/update/deezer-mood Title: GoodPods Main Takeaway: I started using this app to listen to podcasts on and am loving how they are bringing a social media element to podcasting and fixing the discoverability problem in a community focused way. URL: GoodPods.com Title: Top Ways to Improve Audience Engagement Main Takeaway: Keyword in the title is Engagement. Podcasts are similar to any other form of social media, be it twitter, instagram, etc., in the way that if you are simply talking at people, interest will dwindle. But unlike other forms of social media, it can be easy to forget this, because of the nature of the platform of the podcast host/listener relationship. Engagement must be regular and continuous, both in ways throughout the podcast itself and on the platforms by which you promote the podcast. Guest appearances should be mutually beneficial for both the host and the guest, and when you are charging guests, it is more likely than not that the quality of the content is being sacrificed in a number of ways. Sponsor: Focusrite [1;23] I got to play with a Focusrite 2i2 and if you are looking for an easy to get your microphone into your computer (and have the option to have a co-host as well) without having to look at a TON of knobs, check out the Focusrite 2i2. As I'm on a PC, I downloaded a driver, plugged in the unit, and was ready to record. If you're on a Mac computer, you just plug it in. If you want a backup copy of your recording, plug a cable into the monitor out and send the signal to your portable recorder. It's built like a tank and is a lovely shade of red. Check out the interface selector tool that helps you pick the right model for you at their website. From the iTunes DescriptionThe weekly podcast for and about firefighters, "Code 3" covers topics of interest to those in the fire service, through interviews with those who know it best. From Chiefs to Probies, Engineers to Firefighters, and EMTs to Paramedics. award-winning journalist Scott Orr talks with them all.Website: https://www.code3podcast.com/Episode: http://www.spreaker.com/user/enchantedsky/code-3-ep-23-brad-davisOpinion:The intro was short and to the point and let know what to expect. It was well produced and set the mood for the podcast. The host had informed me that he had Parkinson's and as he put it, "which is why my voice is so...weird."My first reaction was that Scott was drunk. However, knowing of his disease I had compassion. My dilemma is then, how does Scott invoke that compassion without announcing in every episode, "Oh by the way I have Parkinson's." I don't have an answer for it. You might add a blurb in you about page on the site. After listening longer and getting used to Scott's "Accent" it somewhat disappears. After all, Scott is the interviewer and his guest should do most of the talking. I always say as long as the delivery does not distract from what is being due to HOW it's being said, you don't have a problem. BONUSWhen I went to the speaker page, there was no way to subscribe to the show.
