On this episode, I spoke to three wonderful creatives from the Mary & George team, including makeup and hair designer Paul Gooch, production designer Helen Scott and costume designer Annie Symons. Gooch is an Oscar nominee for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, a BAFTA Award winner Alice in Wonderland, an Emmy nominee, and a Hollywood Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Award winner. Scott is a BAFTA Television Craft Award winner for Small Axe, a Royal Television Society Craft & Design Award nominee for The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies, and a British Independent Film Award winner for Living. Symons is a BAFTA TV Award winner for Worried About the Boy, a British Independent Film Award nominee for Benediction, an Emmy winner for Great Expectations (nominee for Mary & George!), and a 3x winner of the Royal Television Society Craft & Design Award. *** MORE ABOUT MARY & GEORGE: Mary & George is inspired by the unbelievable true story of Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George (Nicholas Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and become his all-powerful lover. Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King's most trusted advisors. And with England's place on the world stage under threat from outside forces and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher. Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians, colluded with criminals and clawed her way into the heart of the Establishment, making it her own. Mary & George is a dangerously daring historical psychodrama about an outrageous mother and son who schemed, seduced and killed to conquer the court of England and the bed of King James I. The series was nominated for 1 Primetime Emmy Award.

Michael #1: AppleCrate By Rhet Turnbull (from Building macOS Apps episode) AppleCrate is a tool for creating native macOS installers for your command line tools. It's useful for creating installers for command line tools written in any language. Tools written in interpreted languages like Python will need to be first processed with a tool like pyinstaller to create a standalone executable. AppleCrate uses Jinja2 templates to generate the files required for the installer. This allows you to use template variables in your files or command line parameters to customize the installer. Episode 80. Host Troy Saunders has his latest conversation with the legendary Helen Scott, one the founders of The Three Degrees, best known for their 1973 worldwide hit, “When Will I See You Again”. The Three Degrees have been doing it and doing it strong for over 60 years and this special episode will focus on their incredible career.Their manager Richard Barrett brought three young teenagers, Scott, Fayette Pinkney and Janet Harmon, together in Philadelphia. The three didn't know each other before joining the group, which recorded for the Philly-based Swan Records. They scored their first hit in 1965 with the single “Gee Baby (I'm Sorry),” which Troy plays a sample of.Troy says that The Three Degrees helped initiate Philadelphia International Records (“You can say it, I won't” quips Scott). Philly International is the legendary Kenneth Gamble & Leon Huff soul label that featured The O'Jays, Patti LaBelle, Teddy Pendergrass, and McFadden & Whitehead. Philadelphia International Records created a musical legacy that culminated in "TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)," the 1974 hit recording by MFSB featuring vocals by The Three Degrees that was the theme for “Soul Train,” the first TV theme song (and perhaps the first disco song) to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. When Don Cornelius refused to allow any references to “Soul Train” in the single release, The Three Degrees' singing of the title was removed. But, the group would achieve their own major commercial success when “When Will I See You Again” became a hit later that year.Troy and Helen discuss how The Three Degrees had tremendous success in the U.K., where they performed for Prince Charles' 30th birthday celebration at Buckingham Palace. Not only did they tour the palace before most people were able to do so, but they were invited to attend the wedding reception of Prince Charles and Lady Diana, among the few Americans invited. The press even nicknamed The Three Degrees as “Charlie's Angels”. The group performed for almost every member of the royal family in support of their various trusts and charities.Helen is proud that The Three Degrees have maintained that name since 1963. It's been a joyful ride that not many groups have been able to accomplish. The conversation covers the wide range of styles that the group covered throughout their career and Helen is very open and candid in telling their amazing story. She also shares her suggestions to new artists who are just beginning their musical journey. This episode is a memorable dive into a great musical journey from the legendary singer who lived it.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Spotify, Stitcher and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. On October 15, 1977, seventeen-year-olds Christine Eadie and Helen Scott met some friends at the World's End Pub in Edinburgh's Old Town neighborhood to celebrate their new jobs and what they assumed would be the start of their adult lives. The next day, Christine's body was discovered by hikers near Gosford Bay, while Helen's body was discovered in a cornfield several miles away. The Lothian and Borders Police mounted a massive investigation to identify and apprehend the killer but, despite their best efforts, evidence was sparse and by the following year the case had gone cold. The World's End Murders, as they'd come to be known, became one of Scotland's most notorious cold cases, until it was reactivated in 1997 in hopes that scientific and technological advances of the previous two decades could lead them to the girls' killer.Thank you To the Fabulous Dave White for Research Assistance References:Amos, Ilona. 2019. However, if we treat our IDE as a text editor, we are doing ourselves a disservice. As professional developers, we no longer need to learn the fundamentals; we need to deliver working applications. We can use the features of an IDE to help us with this.IntelliJ IDEA is an extremely fully-featured IDE that can help professional developers with almost any task they need to perform, and this can be overwhelming to get to grips with. Getting to Know IntelliJ IDEA uses two approaches to help newcomers and experienced users alike:• Tutorials that walk through writing code and developing applications that show when, why and how to use IntelliJ IDEA features to create working applications.• A questions-and-answers approach that demonstrates which features can be used to solve the problems that professional developers face.Seeing how to use IntelliJ IDEA from these different angles not only showcases the most useful features but also teaches multiple approaches for using these features. Our international true crime series continues this week as we dive into 2 ( or maybe even 3) cases of murder in Scotland. First, Kelsey shares the extremely angering World's End Murders, the tragic death of 2 girls at the hands of a man who had a shockingly long wrap sheet. We discuss what role bad character evidence and the laws of double jeopardy play at trial, and how there may always be exceptions to a rule. Alanna closes out the ep with a massacre from medieval times that will give you total Red Wedding vibes (shout out to GOT fans!), along with a reading from a very special book. We hope you enjoy the ep, and until next time, keep it cryptic. We're going back to one of the first true crime cases we covered on this channel, and talking about the World's End Murders again. Christine Eadie and Helen Scott, who were 17 years old at the time, decided to go on a night out with some friends on October 15th, 1977. So they went to a couple of bars on the royal mile before ending up at the World's End Pub. But that was the last time either of them were seen. 40 years later, the case was finally solved… so what happened that night? And what happened in the years following? Stay safe out there. With more medals coming in for the Paralympics GB team out in Tokyo, here on RNIB Connect Radio we are catching up with GB visually impaired medal winners. Our Toby Davey recently caught up with Aileen McGlynn and her pilot Helen Scott to chat with them about their Paralympic Silver Medal in the 1000M Time Trial. Aileen and Helen won their Silver medal after only teaming up together twelve weeks prior to flying out to Japan for the Tokyo Paralympic Games. Aileen began by describing to Toby their final Silver medal winning time trial and a real achievement for them both with a short time training together prior to Tokyo. Helen talked about how they gelled together both on and off the tandem and how they had to put past Paralympics experiences behind them and concentrate on Tokyo. They also shared their thoughts on how the Paralympic GB VI Cyclists have done in the velodrome and whether they will be going for Paris in 2024. Helen's journey started with a "classical" computer science degree at the end of the 90s but took a sharp turn toward technical writing. Helen told us the horror story of her first development job. We discussed her misconceptions about technical writing and what it became for her. We talked about advocating for the users and why in 2020, she accepted to work for JetBrains as a developer advocate. We finished talking about writing, content creation, and scratching your own itch! Here are the links from the show:https://www.twitter.com/HelenJoScottCreditsCover Campfire Rounds by Blue Dot Sessions is licensed CC BY-NC-ND 4.0.Your host is Timothée (Tim) Bourguignon, more about him at timbourguignon.fr.Gift the podcast a rating on one of the major platforms https://devjourney.info/subscribeSupport the podcast, support us on Patreon: https://bit.ly/devjpatreonSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/timbourguignon)

In this episode of MetCast, we chat to Helen Scott, Manchester Met sport and exercise science student and Paralympic track cyclist. Helen is currently out in Tokyo ready to compete in the kilo and individual pursuit events with her stoker Aileen McGlynn. Helen and Aileen last competed together at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, where the pair walked away with a silver and bronze medal. In this episode you'll hear about the challenges Helen has faced in the last 18 months, her hopes for the games and life while studying and training for the Paralympics.
We launch into 1986 with the first five singles produced by Stock Aitken Waterman released that year — and we hear from all the artists involved. What was going on with that choreography in Brilliant's "Love Is War" music video? What happened in the aftermath of "This Is The House" by The Three Degrees? Why wasn't Haywoode completely comfortable with "You'd Better Not Fool Around"? Princess talks about "I'll Keep On Loving You" and her self-titled debut album, which featured one of Gavin and Mat's favourite SAW non-singles. Plus, a new band came to work with Mike, Matt and Pete — Italian trio Canton, and singer Marcello Semeraro tells the story of how they came to record at PWL and what went wrong just as their single came out.
As 1985 continued, Stock Aitken Waterman straddled two genres — hi-NRG and pop/R&B. Two of their regular artists, Dead Or Alive and Hazell Dean, released new singles: "My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me To The Doctor)" and "They Say It's Gonna Rain" respectively. And the trio began work with R&B singer Haywoode ("Getting Closer") and A-list girl group The Three Degrees ("The Heaven I Need"). Joining us to talk about those tracks are Hazell, Haywoode and Valerie Holiday and Helen Scott from The Three Degrees. There's also a bit of a theme to this episode's tunes, with two of them being later remade by other SAW artists and a third being a remake itself.
Christine Eadie and Helen Scott were murdered after leaving the World's End pub in Edinburgh, in 1977. This would only be the beginning of a string of murders that would eventually expose serial killer Angus Sinclair, who would turn out to be one of Scotland's most notorious criminals.
The World's End Murders -- an apt name for such an appalling crime -- rattled the city of Edinburgh in October 1977. Helen Scott and Christine Eadie, two bright, fun-loving 17-year-olds, disappeared from a busy pub in the heart of the city. The following day, miles away in East Lothian, their bodies were found strangled and coldly discarded. The girls had last been seen in the company of two unknown men… So began a true crime mystery, and a search for justice that would span forty years. A search that would finally bring to light a hidden, twisting trail of death and misery left in the wake of one man... a serial killer whose catalogue of crimes had gone little noticed and unconnected for decades… Website: talkingtilldawn.com Twitter: @TalkingTill Email: talkingtilldawn@gmail.com Support Talking till Dawn: patreon.com/talkingtilldawn This episode contains discussion of murder and sexual assault, which some listeners may find distressing. Join a Gilbert Achcar, Carolyn Eichner, Phil Gasper, and Helen Scott to discuss the enduring legacy of the great Paris Commune and its lessons for today. In March 1871, in the aftermath of France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, ordinary Parisians rose up and took control of their city for themselves. The Paris Commune only lasted for a little over two months, but during that time the Communards enacted a remarkable number of far-reaching democratic measures. The Commune was eventually drowned in blood by the old regime, but it had an enormous impact on the international socialist and working-class movement. Marx wrote The Civil War in France praising the Commune's achievements, which remained inspirational for generations of later socialists. On its 150th anniversary, join us for a discussion of the Commune's accomplishments and weaknesses, and the lessons it holds for the radical left today. As a teenager, Ashley organized and performed in high school talent shows. The biggest part of Ashley's life and musical path came when he attended Howard University where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Music. She is from Kentucky and while composing this song I wanted to enhance the song with more lush arrangement and vocals, which is what you don't here in the music of today. With an ensemble of the best musicians and vocalists from the Philly area, we recorded the song in the Lab studios with engineer Craig White (formerly of Philadelphia International Records). We also had some additional production assistance from Will Downing which was an honor” Though the song is about being in love it is more about the interaction of a couple in the heat of a discussion. It encourages the listener to watch your “Words” and if you don't have an answer in that moment then it is ok to table it for another time.Ashley's latest single “Don't Throw Our Love Away” reached the #3 spot on the UK Soul Chart!!! To continue on the success of this song a remix, for all you that love house music, is scheduled for release in June.

Interview with Helen Scott on fighting UVM's budget cuts, which hurt the lowest paid faculty and staff, even as a bloated administration sacrifices very little. Today’s story takes us across the pond and back in time to 1970s Scotland. Christine Eadie and her friend Helen Scott had known each other since childhood. On October 15, 1977, after a night on the town, their last stop for the night was one of the many popular pubs in the area, The World’s End. Christine and Helen were seen by a police officer walking off with the two men down Saint Mary Street. It was the last time they were seen alive. Edit: Unfortunately, Angus has been pronounced as "Agnes". This was not caught during the recording phase and a deadline had to be met. November 23rd, 1963 is a day that means Many different things. It's both a day of tragedy, and the day that hope began to rise anew. But no matter what it means to you, there is one definitive message that it brings across. We must stand together. And one of the leading voices in that message is an man who isn't even one of us. Doctor Who! This alien from the the planet of Gallifrey is a man with two hearts full of love for humanity. And he's here to do whatever he can to save us. And that includes reminding us that the best thing we can do is to be here for each other. Because, no matter what kind of person someone is, "They're not exempt from kindness, just because they're not kind." International Cesarean Awareness Network
In this episode, we talk to Helen Scott about the life and legacy of Rosa Luxemburg on the 100th anniversary of Luxemburg’s murder. We discuss her most essential works, The Mass Strike and Reform or Revolution, and talk about the historical context of Luxemburg’s political ideas as well as their relevance for today’s new socialist left. In our opening segment, we talk to LA teacher and strike leader Gillian Russom. This episode was recorded prior to the enormous victory won by the teachers, but it remains invaluable in its description of what a win would be, how they organized themselves and the community, and what the fight will look like after the strike ends. Helen Scott is the editor of The Essential Rosa Luxemburg: Reform or Revolution and the Mass Strike (Haymarket Books, 2008) and co-editor, with Paul LeBlanc, of an anthology of Luxemburg’s writings, Socialism or Barbarism (Pluto Press, 2010). She is Associate Professor of English at the University of Vermont and a member of United Academics: AFT/AAUP. She has published articles on Rosa Luxemburg in International Socialist Review, Socialist Studies, and New Formations and is on the editorial board of the Verso Complete Works of Rosa Luxemburg, for which she will be co-editing Volume 5 with Paul Le Blanc. Gillian Russom has been a rank-and-file teacher activist in UTLA for 18 years. She is part of the Union Power caucus and has been a leader in the fight to transform her union into a social-justice union capable of waging a fight against the forces of public education reform. Adopted as a baby, she writes about establishing contact with her birth mother in her book, An Affair with my Mother. Caitriona was raised by loving adoptive parents and enjoyed a happy childhood. An Affair with my Mother is published by Penguin. Carl Tanner is an American tenor.
