Black holes could unlock the mysteries of creation and live at the heart of nearly every galaxy. But these invisible balls of extremely dense matter have never been fully understood, especially when they were only a theory. We travel through a cosmic wormhole back to the 1930s to learn how the first astrophysicist to successfully theorize a black hole, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, was ridiculed and rejected by his scientific community. This is the first episode of a two-part journey celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's operation of the space telescope. Welcome to another episode and another season of Celestial Citizen Podcast!Today, we will be discussing all things asteroids – especially fitting given the recent successful NASA DART (or Double Asteroid Redirection Test) mission toward the end of 2022. We'll be speaking with astronomer Dr. Martin Elvis and diving into his book – Asteroids: How Love, Fear, and Greed Will Determine Our Future in Space – it's a fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in learning more about how asteroids could influence the future of space exploration. On today's show we are joined by Dr. Martin Elvis.Dr. Elvis is an astronomer at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory which is a collaborative research effort alongside Harvard University and it is now known as the Center for Astrophysics. Dr. Elvis has obsessed for years over how supermassive black holes come to be seen as quasars, sources so bright that we see them out to the greatest distances and earliest times in the universe. For his PhD, Dr. Elvis discovered that quasars emit X-rays. And at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, using a fleet of space and ground based telescopes he mapped out the spectrum of quasars from X-rays to ultraviolet and infrared wavelengths, and was able to suggest their inner structures. Concerned about the growing expense of space telescopes, Dr. Elvis has turned to researching how astronomy is needed to enable asteroid mining. He has since published widely on issues related to asteroid mining and the space economy, law and ethics, and even has Asteroid 9283 Martinelvis named after him.We also want to extend a big thank you to our sponsors this year for supporting our show! On Curious Minds, Christine Malec dives into sensing the dynamic universe, a website compiled with accessible astronomy, created by staff at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. AMI Editor Mark Phoenix joins us for this week's Roundtable conversation.
Charles Greeley Abbot was ahead of his time. He was interested in the Sun — not so much as a star, but for more practical reasons. He wanted to use it to improve weather forecasts, and to power everyday devices. He received more than 15 patents related to solar energy — the last when he was 100 years old. Abbot was born 150 years ago today, on a farm in New Hampshire. He quickly showed that he was clever and inventive; at age 13, he designed and built a forge to help repair tools. Abbot studied physics at MIT. There, he met Samuel Pierpoint Langley, director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. He soon joined Langley, then took over the director's job after Langley died. And in 1928, he became secretary of the entire Smithsonian. Abbot was especially interested in how much energy the Sun produced, and how that changed over time. He thought such knowledge could help provide better weather forecasts. So Abbot established three observatories to study the question, then spent decades analyzing the results. He concluded that the Sun's energy output varied by several percent. He turned out to be wrong, though — the variation is only a fraction of one percent. Abbot created many solar-powered devices, and wrote about solar power plants. He patented a solar cooker, a boiler, and a system to remove salt from seawater. Abbot received his final patent less than two years before he died, at age 101. Avi Loeb is author of the book “Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth”. It's a story you can hardly believe, once you hear it. But here it is -- the story of the day in 2017 when telescopes around the world started tracking an object in our solar system. It was moving in such a way that scientists around the world came to the same, startling conclusion: It was an extraterrestrial spaceship. Avi Loeb is a professor of the Harvard Astronomy Department. Rodney Marks was an Australian astrophysicist, who worked with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory at the South Pole. After a day’s work, he became violently ill. 24 hours later he would be dead. But due to the harsh weather conditions, it would be six months before his body could be transported to New Zealand for a post-mortem examination. After an excruciating wait, results showed that Rodney had died from methanol poisoning. On the base were 49 other people, trapped in the winter cold. Was Rodney killed by one of his co-workers, or was his death a tragic accident?
