Do Social Networking Sites Influence Well-Being? The Extended Active-Passive Model

According to the active-passive model, social networking sites (SNSs) can increase well-being when used actively to interact with others but can decrease well-being when their content is passively consumed. However, this distinction might not fully capture the sites' nuanced effects on well-being. Verduyn and colleagues propose the extended active-passive model of SNS use, which organizes active use into reciprocity and communion facets, organizes passive use into achievement and self-relevance facets, and crosses all usage types with user characteristics. Thus, active use may not always be positive, and passive use may not always be negative.  Robert Goldstone of the Percepts and Concepts Laboratory at Indiana University and editor of the APS journal Current Directions in Psychological Science interviews Philippe Verduyn, Professor in the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Maastricht.

The popularity (sự phổ biến) of Social Networking sites has rapidly (nhanh chóng) increased over the past few years. Social networks provide (cung cấp) many kinds of services and benefits (lợi ích) to its users like helping them to connect with new people, share opinions, and stay in touch (giữ liên lạc) with old friends and family. Social Networking gives people an opportunity (cơ hội) to meet new people around the world. Users of these sites have access to millions of profiles from around the world. Popular Social Networking sites are built in such a way that they are very much user friendly (thân thiện với người dùng). Most sites are so easy to navigate that they require (yêu cầu) very little knowledge of the internet. Most of the popular Social Networks allow users to create groups. These groups allow like-minded people (những người cùng sở thích, suy nghĩ) to share their interests and hobbies (mối quan tâm & sở thích). A group acts just as a club whose membership is open to anybody who share similar interests. Most of the highly popular social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are free which makes them open to everybody. These sites mostly make their money through advertisements (quảng cáo). Other ways these sites make money is through extra features like games and other applications which should be paid by the users. Today's discussion focuses on Marti Noxon's To The Bone (2017) which tells the harrowing story of twenty-year-old Ellen (played by Lily Collins) who struggles with anorexia amidst a challenging family dynamic that aggravates her feelings of helplessness and lack of control. As one of the more recent cultural portrayals of EDs, I discuss how this film is problematic by employing film critic Laura Mulvey's understanding of fetishistic scopophilia.  Bibliography (show notes):Anorexia Nervosa. 28 Feb. 2018, www.nationaleatingdisorders.org/learn/by-eating-disorder/anorexia. Bahr, Lindsey. “'To the Bone' Walks Fine Line of Depicting Eating Disorders.” AP NEWS, Associated Press, 12 July 2017, apnews.com/article/0e2dd724949145c180569ee624245a97.Boker, Pamela A. “‘How Can He Be so Nothungry?": Fetishism, Anorexia, and the Disavowal of the Cultural ‘I’ in ‘Light in August.’” Faulkner Journal, vol. 7, no. 1/2, 1991, pp. 175–191. #4.07: Y: Your Connections - "How is your health affected by your connection to digital technology?"

Hello and Welcome to Series 4, Episode 7. The theme in the Lifestyle first Method we're exploring today is Y: Your Connections Digital technology. It has become a fundamental part of everyday life. There's no denying it. It can feel like a saviour, enabling connections. But at the same time, over-connection can feel overwhelming. We're on phones, computers, screens of every size, continuously accessing information. UK adults spend an average of 8 hours and 41 minutes a day on screens – this is more than they are sleeping On average we check our phones every 12 minutes And 40 % of us look at our phones within 5 minutes of waking up. These stats tell us that we spend a lot of time with our digital tech. But so what? What's the effect? We hear the word digital detox used a lot, with implications that we need to remove ourselves from something that is harming us. But what exactly are the harms? And that's the one question I want to answer today. “How is your health affected by your connection to digital technology?” -x- The 2 pieces of information I've looked at to help support today's thinking are: The 2016 review social networking, depression and anxiety by Elizabeth Seabrooke and her team And the 2020 report by Aetna International called The digital health dilemma -x- There are some specific conditions that have risen in relation to the use of digital devices. Have you heard of nomophobia. Several published articles refer to this term. It's a panic disorder related to the fear of being away from mobile phones. Another condition is gaming addiction – it's now a recognised as a diagnosable condition And research is certainly linking use of digital media to mental health issues. In the 2016 review of social networking, depression and anxiety were found to correlate with interactions on social media. Surprisingly, or perhaps unsurprisingly actually, it's not the duration of time spent on social media that has impact, but it's the quality of the interactions, with negative interactions connected to more depression and anxiety and positive interactions connected to less anxiety and depression. So perhaps it's not digital detox we need but digital mindfulness. Choosing how we interact with the digital world with more awareness. So how do you use your phone? Do you let it pull you wherever it takes you or do you keep focus? Focus is one of our key skills, but it gets harder when our phones distract us. When you focus, you activate the prefrontal cortex of your brain which is involved in so many of our higher level functions such as attention, motivation, impulse control, and planning. When you are distracted, the connectivity of this essential part of the brain is affected. And the phone is then the distraction device which affects your performance and productivity. Multi-tasking that was once thought to be a superpower but we now know it's the opposite. When you switch from task to task, you're less productive. Constant digital distraction leads to a more inability to focus – and by 5pm you haven't been able to get to the meaningful work that you wanted to do. And it can be difficult to unplug when you carry the tools of your trade in your pocket or the screen is always visible in front of you. -x- 3 activating actions 1. Put your phone out of sight 2 Change notification settings 3. Try 24/6 instead of 24/7 -x- References 1. Seabrook. E., et al, Social Networking Sites, Depression and Anxiety: a systematic review. Social media sites have also grown in numbers by leaps and bounds. In 2014 there were approximately 2 billion users used social networking sites and apps. With the increased use of mobile devices, this number exceeded 2.6 billion marks by 2018 and is steadily increasing. If we go to the Internet there are more than 66 Social Networking Sites. To name a few: Youtube, LinkedIn, Skype, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Tumblr, Twitter, Pinterest and so many more. Daily millions of people stay connected, get a sense of friendship, learn about what others are doing, and draw their strength from them. For many, there are no people in your personal space, no F2F, no hugs, no handshake. All fo this social media has a place, but should not pull us away from our connection with Jesus, the vine. He said " I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5) He is the true vine, the source of our covenant relationship with God. He is the link by which we are able to stay connected to God and each other. In the words of the old gospel hymn, he is the tie that binds our hearts together in Christian love. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/livingholisticallywell/support

What exactly is the best Social Media Platform to frequent in when you’re a business owner? In this episode of Enlightened Entrepreneur Podcast, Social Media expert, Darlene Hull answers this question along with many others you may have about how and where business owners should start when it comes to Social Media Marketing. Darlene believes that the basic processes in Social media can go a long way, and is the key to a highly effective highly efficient and highly profitable social media marketing strategy.   Key Questions Asked:  How did Darlene get started and what roadblocks did she face along the way? Where should business owners start when it comes to social media marketing? Is there a step by step process that business owners can follow? Where does Darlene see social media going in the next few years and how important it is for business owners to jump on it now? How can they use the Facebook Page effectively? How does Facebook Algorithm work? What is the best Social Media Platform for business owners? How often do Business owners need to post on their social media accounts? Are there any tools that make all these easier? Knowing what she knows now in running her business, what would Darlene do differently if she were to do it all over again?   Highlights of Lessons Learned:  Starting Out One major roadblock Darlene faced earlier on was suffering a disaster in the business because they tried to offer too much to too many people. That’s when she realized they had to scale everything back. Your starting point in social media depends on where your market is. It depends on who you’re trying to reach and what you’re trying to reach them with. Generally, you’ll want to create a place where your target market is going to hang out even if they’re not interested in your product, so when they finally want what you’re selling, you’re the first one to come into their minds.   Facebook Marketing Because Facebook is the biggest market out there, it is also the most difficult platform to market with. With Facebook, it’s important to have a very clear target market. Darlene sees Social Media making a bit of a shift in the next few years. Instead of a static page, it will be more instant messaging apps as live messaging and interacting with customers one on one will be more of a thing. One thing that will never change when it comes to breaking the Social Media is authenticity and personal engagement. With Facebook, you need to have a great cover image that is not necessarily advertising your product but advertising how you want people to feel when they get there. You want to have really interesting posts, lots of visuals, you want to ask good questions as well. Facebook only shows to 2-6% of the people following you. Mastering Facebook will help you master other Social Networking Sites.   Social Media Platforms Your business dictates which platform you should focus on. Darlene’s principle is “Be everywhere, focus on the one that really works.” If you’re a business-to-customer type of business, Facebook is the best platform for you to focus your efforts on because people are there anyway just interacting and seeing places they like to go to. If you are a business-to-business then it’s usually LinkedIn. The number of times you should post on your social media depends on how many things are already being posted in that stream and how fast do they go by. Facebook lifespan is about 2-3 hours, Twitter lifespan is about 45 minutes, LinkedIn really only needs about a post a day or three or four times a week, most of them should have something going out daily. Pinterest should be at least once a day, as well as Instagram and Snapchat. Darlene and her team use tools like Feedly, an RSS Feed Meter; Post Planner and Hootsuite to make posting easier. Given the chance to start all over again, Darlene would make sure to be clear on her line,

Darlene Hull Shares Useful Tips For Choosing The Right Social Media Platform For Your Business What exactly is the best Social Media Platform to frequent in when you’re a business owner? Knowing what she knows now in running her business, what would Darlene do differently if sh were to do it all over again?   Highlights of Lessons Learned:  Starting Out One major roadblock Darlene faced earlier on was suffering a disaster in the business because they tried to offer too much to too many people. That’s when she realized they had to scale everything back. Your starting point in social media depends on where your market is. It depends on who you’re trying to reach and what you’re trying to reach them with. Generally, you’ll want to create a place where your target market is going to hangout even if they’re not interested in your product, so when they finally want what you’re selling, you’re the first one to come into their minds. Darlene and her team uses tools like Feedly, an RSS Feed Meter; Post Planner and Hootsuite to make posting easier.

Editor Zack Martin examines the missing links in protecting and authenticating online identity for social networking sites, especially for minors. With sites like MySpace and Facebook having millions of users, some younger than ten years old, people want to talk about how to protect the children. But at what cost? And will strong authentication ever become mandated by the government for social networking sites much like new strong authentication requirements for financial institutions? All this and more during a discussion between Zack and host Ryan Kline.

Less than three years after emerging from nowhere the hot social networking website MySpace is on pace to be worth a whopping $15 billion in just three more years. Or is it? And is the much smaller Facebook really worth the $900 million or more Yahoo is reported to have offered for it? The problem say Wharton experts is a dearth of information -- including data on expected revenue generation and cost structure -- to plug into the standard valuation models.
