Abstract: Visual search models have long emphasised that task-relevant items must be prioritized for optimal performance. While it is known that search efficiency also benefits from active distractor inhibition, the underlying neuronal mechanisms are debated. Here, we used MEG in combination with Rapid Invisible Frequency Tagging (RIFT) to understand the neural correlates of feature-guided visual search. RIFT served as a continuous read-out of the neuronal excitability to the search stimuli and revealed evidence for target boosting and distractor suppression in early visual cortex. These findings were complemented by an increase in occipital alpha power predicting faster responses and higher hit rates, as well as reduced RIFT responses to all stimuli, regardless of their task-relevance. We propose that alpha oscillations in early visual regions implement a blanket inhibition that reduces neuronal excitability to both target and distractor features. As the excitability of neurons encoding the target features is boosted, these neurons overcome the inhibition, facilitating guidance towards task-relevant stimuli. Our results provide novel insights on a mechanism in early visual regions that supports selective attention through inhibition. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: Selective attention enhances behaviorally important information and suppresses distracting information. Research on the neural basis of selective attention has largely focused on sensory enhancement, with less focus on sensory suppression. Enhancement and suppression can operate through a push-pull relationship that arises from competitive interactions among neural populations. There has been considerable debate, however, regarding (i) whether suppression can also operate independent of enhancement and (ii) whether neural processes associated with the voluntary deployment of suppression can occur prior to distractor onset. We provide further behavioral and electrophysiological evidence of independent suppression at cued distractor locations while humans performed a visual search task. We specifically utilize two established EEG markers of suppression: alpha power (~8-15 Hz) and the distractor positivity (PD). Increased alpha power has been linked with attenuated sensory processing, while the PD, a component of event-related potentials, has been linked with successful distractor suppression. The present results demonstrate that cueing the location of an upcoming distractor speeded responding and led to an earlier onset PD, consistent with earlier suppression due to strategic use of a spatial cue. We further demonstrate that higher pre-distractor alpha power contralateral to distractors was generally associated with successful suppression on both cued and non-cued trials. However, there was no consistent change in alpha power associated with the spatial cue, meaning cueing effects on behavioral and neural measures occurred independent of alpha- related gating of sensory processing. These findings reveal the importance of pre-distractor neural processes for subsequent distractor suppression. Copy rights belong to original authors. Abstract: As visual working memory (WM) is limited in capacity, it is important to direct neural resources towards task-relevant information and away from task-irrelevant information. Neural oscillations in the alpha frequency band (8-12 Hz) have been suggested to play a role in the inhibition of distracting information during WM retention in younger adults, but it is unclear if alpha power modulation also supports distractor inhibition in older adults. Here, we recorded electroencephalography (EEG) while 24 younger (aged 18-35) and 24 older (aged 60-86) adults completed a modified delay match-to-sample task in which distractors of varying strength appeared during the retention period. We found: (1) strong distractors impaired WM performance compared with weak and no distractors in both age groups, but there were no age-differences in WM performance; (2) while younger adults demonstrated significant increases in alpha power prior to the onset of the distractor in all conditions, decreases in alpha power were seen in all distractor conditions in older adults; (3) there was no difference in alpha power between the strong and no distractor conditions; and (4) alpha power in anticipation of the distractor was only associated with task performance in younger adults. Our results suggest that younger adults, but not older adults, modulate alpha power in anticipation of distractors during the visual WM retention period. Copy rights belong to original authors. If you or someone you know is considering suicide, call 988.] Exams have been criticized for how they treat information about a client's culture. Resisting stereotyping is an important clinical and test-taking skill, but race weighs more heavily on mental health licensing exams than you might expect. This question comes from Preparing for the 2019 California Clinical Social Work Law & Ethics Exam. You can find the 2023 edition here. A therapist is deeply concerned about her young adult client from Central America, who has been gradually weaning herself off of mood stabilizing medication. The client's doctor advised against the change, and the client has begun exhibiting risk-taking behavior including high-stakes gambling, experimentation with psychedelic drugs, and running barefoot on a freeway. In session, the client says she is planning her suicide, and that she has bought a gun. The therapist should: Assess the client's history. Move toward hospitalization. Contact the client's physician. Are you defining a distractor as a reason for not choosing something? One of my favorite sayings from when I would teach dance was, “Kids use excuses. Adults use reasons. They are the same thing, just described as something different.” A distractor is beautifully disguised to look like a reason to choose something that will keep your BIG dream small. Are you creating your life from judgment and not recognizing when you're choosing a distractor that's designed to keep you small?I'm here to tell you, you can choose something different and learn how to recognize when a distractor is creeping in and they're hard to notice. For the past 3 days, there was a huge distractor that crept in and kept me from choosing something that can totally elevate me and my businesses. This episode is about how I recognized it, shifted it and chose something different so I didn't judge the sh!t out of me ;) LOL! Are you willing to recognize when you're using a “reason” to keep your dreams small and choose a BIGGER LIFE and BIGGER dreams? DM me on Instagram with a “
Distractors are so beautifully designed to keep you small! What?! Are you willing to recognize when a distractor is creeping in and keeping you from choosing something that can create more for your life?In this episode, I share how I recognized a DISTRACTOR creeping in so that I wouldn't choose something that can totally change my business and increase my revenue. I am currently questioning a new investment of $5,000 and recognizing how I have invested in the past and have increased my revenue by $100,000. What?! And I am rethinking this investment? That's nuts! ;) Choosing to not invest this time is such a distraction. It's time to recognize when a distractor is creeping in and notice when they're keeping you small. IN THIS EPISODE, I TALK ABOUT:Distractors are beautifully disguised to keep your life small. The sole purpose of distractors are to keep you small so you don't choose bigger! How I am working through a distractor of an investment for a future business mastermind.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.21.521409v1?rss=1 Authors: van Moorselaar, D., Huang, C., Theeuwes, J. Abstract: Although in many cases salient stimuli capture attention involuntarily, it has been proposed recently that under certain conditions the bottom-up signal generated by such stimuli can be proactively suppressed. In support of this signal suppression hypothesis, ERP studies have demonstrated that salient stimuli that do not capture attention elicit a distractor positivity (PD), a putative neural index of suppression. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly clear that regularities across preceding search episodes have a large influence on attentional selection. Yet to date, studies in support of the signal suppression hypothesis have largely ignored the role of selection history on the processing of distractors. The current study addressed this issue by examining how electrophysiological markers of attentional selection (N2pc) and suppression (PD) elicited by targets and distractors respectively were modulated when the search target randomly varied instead of being fixed across trials. Results showed that while target selection was unaffected by this manipulation, both in terms of manual response times, as well as in terms of the N2pc component, the PD component was reliably attenuated when the target features varied randomly across trials. This result demonstrates that the distractor PD, which is typically considered the marker of selective distractor processing cannot unequivocally be attributed to suppression only, as it also, at least in part, reflects the upweighting of target features. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.03.514759v1?rss=1 Authors: Giuricich, C., Green, R. J., Jordan, H., Fallah, M. Abstract: Saccade planning and execution can be affected by a multitude of factors present in a target selection task. Recent studies have shown that the similarity between a target and nearby distractors affects the curvature of saccade trajectories, due to target-distractor competition. To further understand the nature of this competition, we varied the distance between and the similarity of complex target and distractor objects in a delayed match-to-sample task to examine their effects on saccade trajectories and better understand the underlying neural circuitry. For trials with short saccadic reaction times (SRTs) when target-distractor competition is still active, we found a robust effect of distance consistent with saccade vector averaging, whereas the effect of similarity suggested the existence of an object-based suppressive surround. At longer SRTs there was sufficient time for competition between the objects to complete and the distractor to be inhibited, which resulted in saccade trajectory deviations exhibiting the effects of a spatial suppressive surround. In terms of similarity, as the target-distractor similarity decreased, the initial saccade angle shifted towards the target, reflecting stronger distractor inhibition. There were no interactions between distance and similarity at any point in the time-course of target-distractor competition. Taken together, saccade trajectories reflect target-distractor competition that is affected independently by both spatial and object-space suppressive surrounds. The differences in saccade trajectories at short and long SRTs distinguish between active and completed decision-making processes. Thus, saccade responses are more beneficial than manual responses in studies of decision-making models. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.18.512686v1?rss=1 Authors: Lerebourg, M., de Lange, F. P., Peelen, M. V. Abstract: Visual search is supported by an internal representation of the target, the attentional template. However, which features are diagnostic of target presence critically depends on the distractors as well. Accordingly, previous research showed that consistent distractor context shapes the attentional template for simple targets, with the template emphasizing diagnostic dimensions (e.g., colour or orientation) in blocks of trials. Here, we investigated how distractor expectations bias attentional templates for complex shapes, and tested whether such biases reflect inter-trial priming or can be instantiated flexibly. Participants searched for novel shapes (cued by name) in two probabilistic distractor contexts: either the target's orientation or rectilinearity was unique (80% validity). Across four experiments, performance was better when the distractor context was expected, indicating that target features in the expected diagnostic dimension were emphasized. Attentional templates were biased by distractor expectations when distractor context was blocked, independently of self-reported awareness of the manipulation. Interestingly, attentional templates were also biased when distractor context was cued on a trial-by-trial basis, but only when the two contexts were consistently presented at distinct spatial locations. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.09.07.506943v1?rss=1 Authors: Ferrante, O., Zhigalov, A., Hickey, C., Jensen, O. Abstract: Visual attention is highly influenced by past experiences. Recent behavioral research has shown that expectations about the spatial location of distractors within a search array are implicitly learned, with expected distractors becoming less interfering. Little is known about the neural mechanism supporting this form of statistical learning. Here we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to measure human brain activity to test whether proactive mechanisms are involved in the statistical learning of distractor locations. Specifically, we used a new technique called rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT) to assess neural excitability in early visual cortex during statistical learning of distractor suppression, while concurrently investigating the modulation of posterior alpha-band activity (8-12 Hz). Male and female human participants performed a visual search task in which a target was occasionally presented alongside a color-singleton distractor. Unbeknown to the participants, the distracting stimuli were presented with different probabilities across the two hemifields. RIFT analysis showed that early visual cortex exhibited reduced neural excitability in the pre-stimulus interval at retinotopic locations associated with higher distractor probabilities. In contrast, we did not find any evidence of expectation-driven distractor suppression in alpha-band activity. These findings indicate that proactive mechanisms of attention are involved in predictive distractor suppression and that these mechanisms are associated with altered neural excitability in early visual cortex. Moreover, our findings indicate that RIFT and alpha-band activity might subtend different and possibly independent attentional mechanisms. Copy rights belong to original authors. Estamos de acuerdo que todo lo que dice y hace el presidente López Obrador tiene una intención política.
Pero en el caso de su ofensiva, lleva cuatro días seguidos, contra la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México y su comunidad, no le encuentro

The Distractor is back baby! It makes its season 3 debut as the final hole of this episode. Plus we get plenty of messy with a couple mud pit holes and animal lovers rejoice because this episode there's plenty of talk about our furry (and not-so-furry) friends with the background of some of the competitors. On Design Time, Tom goes prehistoric with his look at Putt-a-Saurus. Pat updates his Putting Penguin Power Rankings for our fifth winner and talks a little Putt18 in news. These eight kids between the ages of 8-10 years old show up their fellow Australian episode alums how to play this fun mini golf course. Impressive putting by these juniors while their parents did their best to survive the obstacles. The wildest and most Australian (and nightmare inducing) version of The Distractor pops up in the second round. Even though it wasn't in this episode, Tom coudn't resist talkingi about the whimsical hole, Clowning Around, that made a few appearances in Australia as well as one apperance in the US. This hole is no joke! We made it and so did 10 episode winners of the first season of Holey Moley. A few surprises, some drama and one big putt to win the jeweled putter and a big pile of cash. Before we start the recap, we share about two new mini golf courses in the Chicago area in Big Mini Putt Club and the forthcoming artist-designed course at the Elmhurst along with touching on social media news from the WMF (World Mini Golf Sport Federation). There's a shot at redemption (even if it is strangely not on the Distractor) and there is plenty to be excited about as we watch these ten winners try to tackle the course for a second time. Tom glances at the Aussie and US Season 2 grand prize hole, The Tomb of Nefer–Tee–Tee, in Design Time with Mr. Tee. In the episode to determine the last person to make the season finale, we had a couple putts that were just a bit outside the line of the cup. Maryland State mini golf championship is announced for September 2021 and two pop up mini golf courses in Pennslyvania are covered in our news from the mini golf world. Design Time with Mr. Tee looks at the biggest windmills on Dutch Courage. It's in the logo of the show and has a speical place in the hearts of all those who have faced off against it. Things also get hot and bothered as we Dissect the Distractor with The Putting Penguin. An underdog. Dueling wrestlers. A prison guard. A flying Dutch person. A cop. A poor nickname. A 3rd generation pro golfer. A prize winner. And a conspiracy theorist? Holey Moley Australia brings a wild assortment of characters together for episode 9 and we had good fun chatting about all of them. Minigolf news covered DIY mini golf creations made out of snow and a compelling new mini golf app game called OneShot Golf. Tom reminsces and goes into detail on a beloved hole that he and Pat played in Season 1, Slip N' Putt, during Design Time with Mr. Tee. Pat hands out his fish for high-flying entertainment during Dissecting the Distractor.
