Episode 381 reframes Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich for sales professionals, reviewing Chapters 1–3 to show how thought, desire, and faith create predictable sales results. Andrea Samadi connects these timeless principles to practical steps—how to set burning goals, build unwavering belief through repetition, and transfer certainty to buyers. Listeners will get actionable frameworks (a five-step belief plan and the six steps to impress desire) and a clear roadmap for aligning mindset with sales execution, plus a preview of the next episode continuing the series. Welcome back to our final series of SEASON 14 of The Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast, where we connect the science-based evidence behind social and emotional learning and emotional intelligence training for improved well-being, achievement, productivity and results—using what I saw as the missing link (since we weren't taught this when we were growing up in school), the application of practical neuroscience. I'm Andrea Samadi, and seven years ago, launched this podcast with a question I had never truly asked myself before: (and that is) If productivity and results matter to us—and they do now more than ever—how exactly are we using our brain to make them happen? Most of us were never taught how to apply neuroscience to improve productivity, results, or well-being. About a decade ago, I became fascinated by the mind-brain-results connection—and how science can be applied to our everyday lives. That's why I've made it my mission to bring you the world's top experts—so together, we can explore the intersection of science and social-emotional learning. We'll break down complex ideas and turn them into practical strategies we can use every day for predictable, science-backed results. Connecting Back to Our 6-Part Think and Grow Rich Series (2022) For today's EP 381, we are connecting back to our 6-PART Series from 2022[i], where we covered the well-known book, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, to make 2022 our best year ever. Today we will cover: ✔ Chapter 1: The Power of Thought: A 5 STEP Plan to Improve Sales (Outer World) by Improving Your Thoughts (Inner World) ✔ Chapter 2: Desire With a 6 STEP Plan to Achieve ANY Goal ✔ Chapter 3: Faith With 3 Ways to Build Unwavering Faith That Will Change Your Life Back in 2022, we didn't just read Think and Grow Rich—we lived inside it as we launched 2022. Over a 6-part podcast series that began the beginning of January 2022, we walked through this book chapter by chapter, not as theory, but as a personal operating system for growth, performance, and results. This series will always be special for me, as I had heard that my mentor, who inspired me to study this book, Bob Proctor, became ill while I was writing the last episode in the series PART 6. He passed away before it was released, and I'll always remember this episode series, connected to the many people, globally, that he inspired through his work. At the time, the focus of our 6 PART Series was broad. We covered: Personal development Mindset mastery Vision, purpose, and belief We covered the BASICS of this book that Bob Proctor studied for his entire lifetime (over 50 years) that can be applied to whatever it is that you want to create with your life. Today, we are going to look at this timeless piece of knowledge, through a new lens. What we're covering today—Think and Grow Rich for Sales—is not new material. It's the application of this series, towards a specific discipline. You could apply this book to any discipline, but this one, I have wanted to cover for a very long time. How the 6-Part Series Maps DIRECTLY to Sales Mastery Here's the reframe that matters: Every principle we covered in 2022 becomes a sales advantage when applied correctly. In order for me to have gained this understanding, I have to give credit, where credit is due here. I would not have been able to cover our 2022 series without following Paul Martinelli's yearly reviews[ii] of this timeless Think and Grow Rich book that I started to follow in 2019, and continued every year until 2025 when he covered popular Science of Getting Rich book. It was through Paul's explanations, and line by line interpretations, that I finally began to not only READ this book, (from start to finish) but started to INTEGRATE the concepts into my life. I highly encourage following his work, as he continues to host many free webinars, where he gives away knowledge, with no pressure at all to purchase anything from him. I know why he does these webinars. It's not only to help others, but something magical happens when you give back to others, without expecting anything in return. When we covered this 6 PART series, back in 2022, TEACHING these concepts, it took me to another level of understanding, where I realized that this book is not meant to be read just once, but read over and over again, every year, as we all work on whatever it is we are working on, or want to master. This is a living, breathing body of knowledge and is there for all of us, year after year, as we refine our own inner mastery, and move step by step closer to our goals. Albert Einstein explained this concept well when he said that “if you can't explain it to a six-year-old you don't understand it yourself” and this is because teaching something will clearly show you where you have gaps in your own understanding. I'll never forget when I got to PART 6 of the book review, I noticed my book had no notes after around chapter 13. I began studying this book in my late 20s, and was very interested in the subconscious mind (chapter 12) but not at all interested in the brain (chapter 13) at this time, so I actually stopped reading the book here. I knew I never did finished reading this book (until I had to teach it) which explains a lot when it comes to the commitment to complete something. In order to teach something, we must first of all understand it ourselves. But when we LIVE it, and EMBODY what we are teaching (like Paul Martinelli has done) and what I am striving to do, it takes the words in each chapter to greater heights. So with gratitude to Paul Martinelli, who has created a valuable Sales Training Program, based on this timeless book, here is my attempt at covering Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich book, for the Sales Professional, and I couldn't have produced this episode, without Paul's teachings. Let's now look at the first 10 important chapters from Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, through the lens of making our 2026 our Best Year ever, as well as to connect each principal for the salesperson. And you don't need to be in sales for these principles to work for us. Think and Grow Rich for Sales How Inner Mastery Becomes Sales Results Inspired by Think and Grow Rich Through a modern neuroscience + sales lens Chapter I: The Power of Thought Applied to Sales Why Sales Outcomes Begin in the Mind Core Idea: Sales performance is a reflection of expectation and belief first, not effort alone. What you think and believe about your ability, your product, and your outcome directly determines how you show up—and how others respond to you. Sales Applications Your internal dialogue sets your sales ceiling “Hoping” for results programs hesitation and inconsistency Expectation + emotion = outcome Listener Takeaway You don't get the sale you want. You get the sale you expect—the one you truly believe you can achieve. You get the sale you expect. The one you actually believe you can achieve. REVIEW OF CHAPTER I — “The Power of Thought” Edwin C. Barnes: The Man Who Thought Himself into Partnership with Thomas Edison In Chapter I of Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill introduces us to Edwin C. Barnes, a man who achieved something extraordinary—not through money, connections, or credentials—but through the power of his thought. Barnes held a single, unwavering vision: to work with Thomas Edison—not for him, but with him. This was an audacious goal. Barnes did not know Edison personally. He lacked money, influence, and even the funds to comfortably pay for the train fare to New Jersey. Yet none of these obstacles altered his decision. Hill explains that Barnes did not wish for this partnership. He decided it would happen. When Edison later recalled their first meeting, he described Barnes standing before him looking like an ordinary tramp—but said there was something unmistakable in the expression of his face: “There was something in the expression of his face which conveyed the impression that he was determined to get what he had come after.” (Chapter I, p. 2, TAGR) Edison did not see wealth, polish, or preparation. He saw initiative, faith, and the will to win—and that was enough. Barnes brought no money to the table. No résumé. No formal value proposition. But he carried something far more powerful: a clear vision, unwavering belief, and a level of certainty that Edison could feel. Hill later writes that Barnes' “bulldog determination” and persistence with a single desire was destined to mow down all opposition and bring him the opportunity he sought. Barnes did not retreat when months passed and nothing happened. He did not say, “What's the use?” He did not downgrade his goal to something more “reasonable.” He held the vision until reality caught up with it. Why This Matters for Sales To understand why Edison trusted Barnes, we must understand something critical: Thought carries frequency. Belief has energy. Certainty is felt long before it is spoken. Edison did not evaluate Barnes based on where he was. He responded to where Barnes knew he was going. Barnes was already operating on the frequency of partnership—not employment. And Edison recognized it. “When one is truly ready for a thing, it puts in its appearance.” (Chapter I, p. 3, TAGR) Barnes was ready. Putting Chapter I into Action for Sales Look at the image in the show notes illustrating levels of frequency of thought—where the physical, intellectual, and spiritual worlds intersect like the colors of a rainbow. Think of each level as a different radio station. To hear the station you want, you must tune your mind to that frequency. If you receive your 2026 sales goal and your immediate thought is: “There's no way I can do this,” then that is the frequency you are broadcasting. You are not tuned to the level where that goal exists. You cannot reach a destination using the same level of thinking that created your current results. This is why Marshall Goldsmith's principle holds true: What got you here won't get you there.[iii] The Key to Chapter I: Unwavering Belief Napoleon Hill makes this unmistakably clear: “When a person really desires a thing so deeply that they are willing to stake their entire future on a single turn of the wheel to get it, they are sure to win.” (Chapter I, p. 2, TAGR) Barnes staked his future on belief. Sales excellence requires the same commitment. A 5-Step Sales Application Framework to Apply Chapter 1 STEP 1 When your sales goal is set, ask yourself honestly: Do I believe I can achieve this? STEP 2 If belief is present, create a clear, actionable plan—and commit to following it consistently. STEP 3 If belief is not present, seek out someone who has already achieved the result. Borrow their certainty. Follow their guidance exactly. STEP 4 Once belief is established, take daily action. There is no wishing—only disciplined effort backed by belief. STEP 5 Monitor not just results, but your level of belief. When belief wavers, behavior follows suit. When behavior wavers, results disappear. Final Thought for Chapter 1 Edwin C. Barnes did not succeed because he was lucky. He succeeded because he thought differently—and held that thought long enough for reality to align with it. He jumped to an entirely new frequency with this belief. Sales mastery begins the same way. Not with tactics. Not with scripts. But with the Power of Thought Backed by Belief. Chapter II: Desire From Wanting Sales to Demanding Results Core Idea: Desire must be emotionally charged and specific. Sales Application: Turning vague quotas into emotional targets Why clarity eliminates hesitation Selling with intention vs need Listener Takeaway: Vague goals create vague results. REVIEW OF CHAPTER II: DESIRE — The Starting Point of All Achievement Chapter II of Think and Grow Rich brings us to the engine behind every meaningful result: Desire. Napoleon Hill makes this unmistakably clear: “All achievement begins with an idea.” But not every idea becomes reality. Only ideas fueled by burning desire become reality. Hill describes Edwin C. Barnes' desire as something very specific: “It was not a hope. It was not a wish. It was a pulsating desire which transcended everything else. It was definite.” (Chapter II, p. 19, TAGR) Barnes did not hope to work with Thomas Edison. He did not wish it might happen someday. He expected it. At the time, there was no evidence this partnership would ever exist. Barnes and Edison were not in conversation. There were no guarantees. No proof. No visible path. And yet Barnes committed to the idea anyway. That's the nature of true desire: It moves before evidence appears. Going from where you are now to where you want to go is always a process—and at the beginning of that process, desire often feels irrational, private, even uncomfortable to say out loud. That doesn't make it wrong. It makes it powerful. Why This Matters for Sales In sales, desire drives behavior. You don't need to know how you'll hit your goal at the beginning. You only need to know what you want and why you want it. The “how” always reveals itself after this commitment. This is something my mentor Bob Proctor emphasized constantly. When I moved from Canada to the United States in 2001, I had no clear roadmap. I didn't know exactly how it would work. But I had clarity of desire—and that was enough to begin. The way was shown… Along with obstacles. Many of them. That's always how it works. Obstacles are not signs you're off track. They are part of the process. Desire and Sales Frequency What does DESIRE have to do with SALES SUCCESS? Here's the key sales translation: Hesitation does not exist at the same frequency as certainty. It's this certainty (or burning desire) that we will need. When desire is weak: You hesitate You soften your language You sell with need instead of intention When desire is strong: Clarity replaces doubt Energy becomes steady Certainty becomes transferable to those you are speaking to Ask yourself honestly: Do I have the same burning desire in my sales goals that Edison saw in Barnes' eyes? Because others can feel it—just as easily as they can feel when it's missing. Desire radiates. Hesitation leaks. And buyers will respond accordingly. Burning the Ships Hill offers one of the most powerful principles in the book in this chapter on Desire: “Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn their ships and cut all sources of retreat.”(Chapter II, p. 21, TAGR) Barnes did this when he traveled to New Jersey to meet Edison. I did this when I left Toronto for the United States in 2001. There was no “going back if it didn't work.” Burning the ships forces alignment. And this connects directly to a later chapter: Decision. The Latin root of the word decision means “to cut.” When you decide, you cut off retreat. You look at your sales goal and see no acceptable outcome other than its achievement. That level of commitment changes how you show up every single day. The Six Steps to Achieve Any Goal (Chapter II) Next in this Chapter, Napoleon Hill outlines six steps designed to impress desire directly into the subconscious mind. Though written about money, (in the book) these steps apply to any goal, including sales. These are the steps I personally keep visible—and that leaders like American Businessman Grant Cardone practice daily. The Six Steps Write a clear description of what you want. You must know exactly where you're going. What is your sales goal? Decide what you're willing to give in return. There is no such thing as something for nothing. You will give up something of lower value to gain something greater. (I never understood this until I watched others with their achievements. Sometimes it's giving up time, or watching Netflix, or something like that. You give up something of a lower nature, to receive what it is that you want). Set a definite date. Desire without a timeline remains a wish. Create a clear action plan. Begin immediately—ready or not. Write the plan out in detail. Clarity strengthens commitment. Read it twice a day. As you read, see, feel, and believe yourself already in possession of the goal. (Chapter II, p. 23, TAGR) This sounds simple—but not easy. Most people won't do it consistently. That's why most people won't get these extraordinary results. Listener Takeaway Vague goals create vague results. Sales success begins the moment desire becomes: clear emotionally charged and non-negotiable Final Thought — Chapter II: Desire Desire is not motivation. It is not excitement. It is not ambition. Desire is commitment before evidence appears. When your desire is strong enough: hesitation disappears clarity sharpens certainty becomes visible And when certainty is visible, others respond to it. Sales does not reward the most talented. It rewards the most committed. Everything that follows in Think and Grow Rich rests on this foundation. If desire is weak, nothing else works. If desire is strong, the rest becomes possible. Chapter III: Faith Certainty Is the Real Close Core Idea: Faith is belief made visible through certainty. Sales Application: Why buyers borrow certainty from the salesperson Confidence vs arrogance How belief softens objections Listener Takeaway: Buyers don't borrow certainty from products. They borrow it from you. REVIEW OF CHAPTER III: FAITH How Do We Develop Faith? Napoleon Hill defines faith clearly and practically: “Faith is a state of mind which may be induced, or created, by affirmations or repeated instructions, through the principle of autosuggestion.” (Chapter III, p. 46, TAGR) Faith is not something you wait for. It is something you train. We develop faith by following the six steps outlined in Chapter 2 of Think and Grow Rich: writing our goals and reading them aloud every day—twice a day—until the idea moves from the conscious mind into the non-conscious mind through autosuggestion. This is a process. If you have never read your goals out loud before, it may feel uncomfortable at first. When I started, I remember closing my office window, worried my neighbors might think I was crazy. In the beginning, the words can feel awkward and forced. But with repetition, something changes. Your words begin to flow more easily. Your tone becomes confident. And eventually, what once felt unnatural starts to feel true. Our goals begin living with and through us. Hill instructs us to read our goals: “As if you were already in possession of them.” (Chapter III, p. 48, TAGR) A simple way to do this is to begin with the statement: “I am so happy and grateful now that…” and then state your goal clearly—whether it's a sales target or any other objective you are working toward. Faith, Autosuggestion, and Something Bigger This is often the point where people bring their own beliefs into the process. If you believe—as I do—that there is something greater than yourself at work in the world, you will feel it here. Hill called it Infinite Intelligence. Others may call it God, Spirit, or Universal Intelligence. Hill wrote: “Faith is the element, the ‘chemical' which, when mixed with prayer, gives one direct communication with Infinite Intelligence.” (Chapter III, p. 49, TAGR) Regardless of what you call it, the experience is the same: faith grows when belief is repeatedly impressed upon the mind. And this is critical: We must have faith in our dreams, not in our doubts. Faith Applied to Sales In sales, faith shows up as certainty. Buyers do not buy certainty from products. They borrow it from the salesperson. This is where many people get confused. Faith is not arrogance. Arrogance is loud and brittle. Faith is calm, grounded, and steady. When you believe in: yourself the value you bring and the outcome you're guiding someone toward your certainty becomes transferable. And when certainty is present, objections soften. Not because you argue them away—but because belief replaces resistance. How Faith Becomes Unwavering To build unwavering faith, Hill's principles point us to three realities: You must move through the Terror Barrier of Fear. Faith grows when your conscious and non-conscious minds begin to align. Fear appears first—but it does not get the final word. Faith strengthens through repetition. Writing and repeating your goals daily through autosuggestion gradually reshapes belief. Faith grows fastest when focused on one clear idea. Pick one goal. Take action toward it. Each step builds self-confidence, self-awareness, and self-esteem. Over time, belief takes hold. One day, you'll look back at the early version of yourself—the one who hesitated, doubted, or felt unsure—and you'll realize how far you've come. I talk about this idea often. It's like adding red food color drops into a cup of water. In the beginning, it's hard to see any change in the color of the water. But over time, with persistent action, the glass of water eventually changes color. And you'll look back and be grateful you moved forward past fear. Listener Takeaway Buyers don't borrow certainty from products. They borrow it from you. Final Thought — Chapter III: Faith Faith is not pretending. It is not positive thinking. And it is not blind optimism. Faith is certainty trained through repetition. When belief becomes strong enough, it changes how you speak, how you act, and how others respond to you. Sales closed do not happen at the end of the conversation. They happen the moment certainty is felt. And certainty begins inside you. REVIEW OF CHAPTERS I–III The Foundation of Sales Mastery To review and conclude this special review of Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, through the lens of a salesperson, we covered the first three chapters of Think and Grow Rich that form a complete inner foundation. Together, they explain why sales success begins long before tactics, scripts, or strategies ever matter. Before there is action, there is belief. Before belief, there is desire. And before desire, there is thought. Napoleon Hill does not begin this book with techniques. He begins with identity and inner alignment. For sales professionals, these chapters explain why results are not random—and why performance is always an inside-out process. Chapter I — The Power of Thought Why Sales Outcomes Begin in the Mind Chapter I introduces the central premise: Thought is creative. Through the story of Edwin C. Barnes, Hill shows us that success begins when a person decides what they want and holds that thought with unwavering persistence—long before evidence appears. Barnes did not hope to work with Thomas Edison. He decided it would happen. Despite having no money, no relationship, and no visible path, Barnes carried himself with such certainty that Edison felt it immediately. Edison did not respond to Barnes' circumstances—he responded to Barnes' state of mind. Sales Application: Sales performance reflects what you expect, not what you wish for. Your internal dialogue: sets your confidence level shapes your tone determines whether you lead or hesitate You don't get the sale you want. You get the sale you expect—the one you truly believe is possible. Chapter II — Desire From Wanting Sales to Demanding Results If thought sets direction, desire supplies the fuel. In Chapter II, Hill makes a critical distinction: Desire is not hope. It is not wishing. It is not motivation. True desire is emotionally charged, specific, and definite. Barnes' desire to work with Edison was not casual or negotiable. It was what Hill called a burning desire—so strong that Barnes was willing to stake his future on it. Sales Application: Desire determines behavior. When desire is vague: goals feel optional hesitation increases selling comes from need When desire is clear and emotionally anchored: confidence sharpens clarity replaces doubt certainty becomes visible Vague goals create vague results. Sales success accelerates the moment desire becomes non-negotiable. Chapter III — Faith Certainty Is the Real Close Chapter III explains how desire becomes believable: through faith. Hill defines faith not as blind belief, but as a trainable state of mind, developed through repetition and autosuggestion. Faith is belief made visible through certainty. By writing goals clearly and reading them aloud daily—as if already achieved—belief moves from the conscious mind into the non-conscious mind. Over time, certainty replaces doubt. Sales Application: Buyers do not borrow certainty from products. They borrow it from the salesperson. Faith shows up in sales as: calm confidence (not arrogance) steady tone authority without pressure When faith is present, objections soften—not because they're argued away, but because certainty dissolves resistance. How Chapters I–III Work Together These chapters are not separate ideas. They form a sequence: Thought sets direction Desire creates commitment Faith produces certainty Without thought, there is no aim. Without desire, there is no momentum. Without faith, there is no follow-through. Sales mastery begins here—not with what you say, but with who you are being when you say it. Final Integrated Insight (Chapters I–III) Sales does not reward effort alone. It rewards clarity, commitment, and certainty. When: your thoughts are aligned your desire is definite and your faith is trained your results begin to change—often before your strategy does. Because at the highest level, sales is not a transaction. It is the transference of emotion. And the primary emotion is certainty. With gratitude to close out our review of Chapters 1-3 of Think and Grow Rich dedicated to the salesperson, we bring our credit to Paul Martinelli, who has helped me to understand not only the entire book, for our first review, but to now take this book, and apply it for success in the sales industry. I hope you have enjoyed this angle of this timeless book, and we will see you in a few days for PART 2 of this review, where we will cover the next 3 chapters of Think and Grow Rich. See you soon! “Take that first step into what it is that God has for you. Focus forward on what it is that you need to and you're going to be amazed at what's going to happen.” -Will Ramsey When we go through something tragic, it's almost impossible to move on with our lives and keep our focus forward. We tend to have this feeling of being stuck in a looping memory of what happened. But this is a normal human reaction after experiencing loss. We are not born with the ability to deal with tragedy, but it doesn't have to be permanent. We can learn how to do it. Many people know him as Will Ramsey “Ignites”. Yet, behind the burning passion of helping others overcome adversity, was a man facing a battle of his own. After his wife was imprisoned, Will had to raise their 3 children alone. Life as a single parent was already hard enough, but the most painful tragedy of all was hearing that his son passed away. How did Will react? What did he do the morning of the funeral that changed his life? And how did he find healing and purpose? In this episode, Will talks about how to start moving forward again after tragedy, how to address your emotions head-on, and how to use your story to help others get through their own hardships. Welcome back to PART 2 of Making 2022 You Best Year Ever with EPISODE #191 on “The Importance of Thinking Differently and Choosing Faith over Fear” as we continue our deep dive into Napoleon Hill's Classic book, Think and Grow Rich, that has sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Be sure to click here to access the images in the show notes. For those new, or returning guests, welcome back to Season 7 of our Podcast I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and like many of you who tune in, have been fascinated with learning, understanding, and applying the most current brain research to improve productivity in our schools, our sports, and workplace environments. This month, I decided to share my notes with you on a book that I have been studying every year, with Paul Martinelli, who has studied this book for most of his career. On our first episode[i] and PART 1 of this book study, where we cover the Author's Introduction and Desire chapter, we opened with a quote from Undercover Billionaire Grant Cardone, who said, “In order to get to the next level of whatever you're doing, you must think and act in a wildly different way than you previously have been” and this is where I wanted to begin this episode, with reviewing Chapter 1 “Thoughts Are Things” with the idea that we must “think” in a wildly different way than we previously have to obtain NEW results in 2022. On this episode, you will learn ✔︎ How to go from fear to hope, using faith, in pursuit of your goals. ✔︎ How to “think” wildly different than you did last year. ✔︎ Examples of people who “thought” their way to their goals, making their ability to “think” the best investment of their lifetime. ✔︎ The 6 STEPS you must take every day, that will put your goal on autosuggestion. ✔︎ Common mistakes made when goal-setting/achieving. ✔︎ 4 steps to overcome your fears, helping you to break through to new levels in 2022. ✔︎ How to becoming unwavering with our faith, helping us when obstacles appear. How Do We “Think in a Wildly Different Way” to Get New Results? The answer is--by expanding our awareness. I'm sure you see now why studying Think and Grow Rich by reading and thinking about every word we are reading is so very important. We could spend a whole year studying this book, which is why I think we should all keep reading it, gaining more awareness long after January and this book study ends. Look at it this way. Remember the last lesson where we looked at how ideas are formed, and how it's up to us to act on our ideas and bring them to fruition. IMAGE: Levels of Frequencies of Thought Look at the image in the show notes of the levels of frequency and think of this as an example of where you are now, or the thoughts, feelings, and actions you are currently living with, giving you a certain result. Then imagine all the lines above where you are now, leading to where you want to go. Think of these frequencies like radio stations. To tune into the radio station you want, you need to turn the dial to that frequency. This is exactly the same idea to think about when we want to tune into the frequency that our goals exist on. And it won't be with the level of thinking you have at your current level. That's the whole point of Marshall Goldsmith's book What Got You Here, Won't Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful.[ii] To ATTAIN your goal, or a new result, you will need to “think and act in a wildly different way that you previously have been” like Grant Cardone, reminded us. That's because the goal is on a different frequency than where you are now. To hit this NEW target, you will need to think NEW thoughts, take NEW actions, that will create NEW results, and none of them will be what you are currently doing. When I first saw this image, I remember wondering “well how on the earth do I magically get on the same level of vibration as the thing that I really want?” and the first time I did this exercise, I wrote down that I wanted to live in the United States (when I lived in Toronto at the time) and had no idea how I would ever make that happen. In the beginning, we don't need to know all the details on “how” we will do what we want to do. How Do You Move to a New Frequency? Over the years, and once I had achieved a few goals this way, it became obvious how this works. Think back 5 years ago to the person you were then. You have probably grown and changed since then and may be nothing like the person you once were. You had new experiences that took you to a new frequency. It can happen with a new job, where you must think in an entirely different way than you had to with a previous job, or maybe you moved to a new location, like I did, and had new experiences that have changed you. Now you can see the importance of why Napoleon Hill called this book “Think and Grow Rich” because it is crucial that we change our thinking to obtain the new results we are looking for. When we change our thinking, we will have new experiences, that will change our conditions, circumstances and environment, changing our vibration or frequency level and put us exactly where we need to be for the attainment of our goal. Only then, will we be able to look back and explain how we did it to others. Yesterday, I ran into my good friend Jeff Gould on the hiking trails, otherwise known as South Mountain Cowboy, who has been horseback riding on these mountains for the past 40 years and he looks younger than most of us who run up and down the hills daily. While chatting with Jeff this morning, who is a huge supporter of this podcast, he shared what he's learning from the episodes, and that he's always challenging himself to “think differently” by tuning into these episodes, which is probably what keeps him looking and feeling so young! I agreed with him that happiness comes naturally when we do what we love, continually challenge ourselves to grow, and live life doing whatever it is that makes us happy. It's a simple formula really--we radiate energy when we are doing what we love and enjoy the most, aligning ourselves with more and more experiences, as we continually expand and grow in pursuit of our vision. Can you see how 2022 can be your best year ever? It just takes your vision, and your will to achieve it, and I love seeing people like Jeff, living their dream on a daily basis. Jeff Gould, Southmountain Cowboy, on Telegraph Pass Mountain, AZ. Edwin C. Barnes In Chapter 1 “The Power of Thought” Hill talks about Edwin C. Barnes who also had a vision that he wanted to achieve when he “thought” his way into a partnership with Thomas Edison. Hill shares how Barnes had this burning desire to work with Thomas Edison. This was his goal, and was way out there for him, because he didn't even know Edison, and was short on money to pay for his rail fare to get him to New Jersey to meet him. Barnes overcame all the obstacles he faced, and Edison described meeting the man he would eventually partner with by recalling the day he arrived. He said, “he stood there before me looking like an ordinary tramp, but there was something in the expression of his face which conveyed the impression that he was determined to get what he had come after.” (Page 2, TAGR). Edison recognized the look in his eyes and it's what allowed him to eventually go into partnership with Barnes, who had no money, or influence to bring to the table, but he did have “initiative, faith and the will to win” (CH 1, page 4, TAGR) which was all Edison needed to see. Barnes thought wildly differently to obtain what he wanted, and Edison picked up the energy or vibration that came from him, and it was easy for him to trust this was going to be a lucrative partnership. There are more important examples in this chapter, that I hope you will read, to see why we should never quit when we experience defeat, and why persistence is a power that often gets a person what they want, but only when one persists long after most people would usually give up. Have you even seen this principle in action? I saw an example of this recently while researching Dr. David Sinclair, who we covered on EPISODE #189[iii] when I uncovered that he had to self-fund his trip from Australia to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to interview to work in their lab, which he did. He didn't let his lack of funds stop him from finding his way to MIT and had many obstacles to overcome when he would eventually begin his work, when he experienced criticism for the direction he wanted to take, when other researchers questioned whether “aging was even a thing”[iv] to study. He had a clear vision of what he wanted and didn't let any obstacles get in his way, even though he faced many that began in his early days and was just something he had to push through. Chapter 2: DESIRE Which brings us to Chapter 2: DESIRE and why we must know what we want, with a crystal-clear vision, and hold an unwavering belief that we can have it, and expect that we will have it, remembering this is where it all begins. That “all achievement, begins with an idea.” (Napoleon Hill). Barnes had a “burning desire” (CH2, page 19 TAGR) that “was not a hope. It was not a wish. It was a pulsating desire, which transcended everything else. It was definite.” (CH2, page 19, TAGR). Barnes wanted to work with Edison, even though there was no evidence of these two meeting. It wasn't like Edison and Barnes had been talking about this idea for a while, it was Barnes's idea, and when he started to move this idea into form, I'm sure he thought it was crazy and something he wouldn't be shouting out from the rooftops. Going from where we are now, to where we want to go, is a process. You are never ready when you start something, but you will never be 100% ready. You just need to start and do the thing that you want to do. When I moved from Canada to the US in early 2001, I remember following this process, and not sure of “how” exactly I was going to do it. Proctor would always remind us that we don't need to know “how” we will do what we want, but just get it started and the way will be shown. That was true. The way will always be shown, along with a billion obstacles that will show up as well, to try to deter you from moving forward. You just need to know WHAT you want and WHY, and this will drive your behavior. You can only explain HOW you did it after the fact, looking back, once you arrive there. Do you know what you want? Do you have that burning desire that Edison saw in Barnes's eyes? Remember, it's difficult to see our own potential, but others can surely see it in us. That burning desire of what you want radiates from you, and others can pick up this energy, and like Edison did with Barnes, help move you to where you need to go. That's why you can't be shy about what you are working on. You will need all the help you can get, from as many different sources as possible. And there's something else to consider. “Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat.” (CH 2, page 21, TAGR). Barnes did this when he found his way to New Jersey to meet with Edison, and Dr. David Sinclair did it when he left Australia for MIT. I remember doing this when I left Toronto. There was no going back saying “oh it didn't work out” because I had burned all ships and had no other options. You must be committed with your decision (which is another chapter) but you will see how all of these chapters tie into each other. The Latin root word for the word decision literally means “to cut” so when you make a decision, you must never go back. You've burned your ships and cut all sources of retreat. Which brings us to the important 6 Steps to Achieve Your Goal in chapter 2. You will notice that these steps are written with the idea of drawing finances to you, but these 6 steps can be used to bring ANY goal your way. These are the 6 steps I have written on my wall, that I read every day, and Grant Cardone, Uncover Billionaire says he does this as well, all 6 steps, every day, twice a day. I've watched him do it using a legal pad of paper in less than 3 minutes. Either way, the 6 steps to put any goal into our non-conscious mind, so that it eventually happens on autopilot, without much effort, is as follows: Write out a clear description of what you want. You must be prepared to give something of value up in return for what you want. There no such thing as “something for nothing.” When you begin working on your action steps, it will become clear what you are giving up. Set a date when you intend to have this goal that you desire. Create your action plan, to carry out what you want, whether you are ready for it or not. Write this out in detail! Read what you wrote twice a day! “As you read, see and feel and believe yourself already in the possession” (CH 2, page 23, TAGR) of what you want. It's this simple, but not really, because most people won't follow these steps. I was surprised when I watched Grant Cardone demonstrating how he WRITES and READS his goals twice a day, mostly because I know where this idea originated from, and most people miss that reading out loud part. Cardone didn't. He knows these six steps and didn't miss one of them. It's easy to read this book, and grab some ideas to implement, and make some mistakes, and not do exactly what the book suggests. That's why it's called “Think and Grow Rich.” Common Mistakes That Are Made When Setting Goals-That Will Guarantee That None of this Will Work? People set goals on what they know they can do, or what they've done in the past. You will be sure to fail this way, because there is no inspiration in going after what we already know we can do. You need to really stretch yourself, and think of what you want, that takes you beyond where you have ever been before in this process. You'll be sure to fail if you don't change your plans when they aren't working. If your Plan A fails, do you have a Plan B? Remember—you don't need to know exactly how you will attain your goal. Just begin, do the work, and eventually you will achieve it, and only then will you be able to explain this process to others. Chapter 2 has some examples of well-known, highly successful people who have put these ideas into action and ends with Hill summarizing the process for us when he says “I want to convey the thought that all achievement, no matter what it's nature or purpose, must begin with an intense, burning desire for something definite. Through some strange and powerful principle of mental chemistry, nature wraps up in the impulse of strong desire that something which recognizes no such word as impossible and accepts no such reality as failure. We must remember that there's a difference between “wishing for” something and being ready to receive it. Remember that look that Edison saw in Barnes's eyes? Do you have that look with whatever it is you want? If I was standing in front of you, and asked you “what do you really want” would you answer this question clearly and confidently, with that look in your eye, and be able to show me how you would use the 6 steps, with your action plan, or would this question catch you off guard, like when Proctor first asked me, and I wasn't prepared to answer it? This brings new meaning to the quote— “Luck is when preparation and opportunity meet.” How? Over time, we become better at what we do. Every day that we write and repeat our vision out loud, it etches deeper into our being. Our vision becomes who we are, and we never let it rest, until we perfect our craft and achieve our goals. Keep going and remember “if a person is not prepared when the opportunity arises, it will only make them look foolish.” (Earl Nightingale). How Do I Overcome my Fears? What happens when you begin moving towards your big, outrageous idea, and FEAR, or DOUBT starts to set in, ruining your vision, and making you want to give up? This will happen. It will happen more times than you'd like. Dr. Sinclair mentioned it happened to him when he finally got to MIT to work on his vision of creating anti-aging strategies and people he worked with challenged his ideas, urging him to reconsider his vision, and that “anti-aging” wasn't a thing to do study. He talked about this on Joe Rogan's podcast that he called home and was worried that he had made a mistake with his vision. It's easy to see HOW this happens, when it's not you who is experiencing the fear. Look at the image in the show notes where you see your INSPIRED IDEA that you are working on with focused thought. I write about this in my first book, The Secret for Teens Revealed[v], and it's something I learned from my early days of working with Proctor. The Terror Barrier or The Change Mechanism To break through to a new level, you will need to break through what Proctor called the Terror Barrier, and I re-named it The Change Mechanism in my first book. It's what happens when you have a major shift in your life, and you begin to feel scared deep inside that maybe you have made a mistake. Your entire Central Nervous System starts to go off as you begin to think of this new thought. I remember feeling this when I quit my teaching job, broke my contact with TDSB and went to work for Proctor for $10 an hour. It didn't help that my Dad screamed at me that I would regret this decision for the rest of my life, but I really did believe that there was more I needed to learn. You will go through these 4 stages with your new idea. Stage 1: Help I'm Stuck (Bondage). When you are here, you are living in your comfort zone. Life is easy, because you are not stretching outside your comfort zone. There is no discomfort or fear. But, if you were to be honest, this type of life is playing it safe. You might know you are capable of so much more, but are afraid to take the necessary steps needed for this change. You are stuck here, in your old paradigm. If you look at the image in the show notes, I show a person who is thinking x thoughts in their conscious mind, with x thoughts in their non-conscious mind, getting x results. They are not doing anything new, and their results will stay the same. We have all been here, stuck, not sure of how to make a change. Stage 2: I'm Frustrated If we live life stuck for too long, you will become frustrated, because it's natural that we want to BE, DO, and HAVE more with our life. We are either creating (expanding) and growing, or we are going the other way, disintegrating, not growing, and frustrated. The feeling of frustration can be motivating, and push you to make a change, and try something different. Stage 3: I'm Making Changes, But Feeling So Uncomfortable At this stage, you have taken a new idea (I label it a Y idea in my diagram) in your conscious mind, but your non-conscious mind still has the old X idea (or whatever you are currently doing) so there is cognitive dissonance at the brain level. The new idea might be a new job, moving somewhere else, or maybe an entire career change, and suddenly, in the middle of the decision-making process, your entire central nervous system goes out of control, and you are overcome with fear. It's because your non-conscious mind is still operating with your old idea, or whatever you are currently doing, and you will think that you have made a mistake and question your decision. At this point, we must understand that the opposite of FEAR is FAITH, leading us to Chapter 3 of the book. We feel fear because we lack understanding, FAITH is based on understanding, and when we have it, we can move forward, and never look back at our old life. We will only advance forward to new opportunity with understanding, and the use of FAITH. It's here that we BREAK FREE from our past, and experience the final stage, Stage 4: Freedom Freedom is achieved when we step outside of our comfort zone, feeling uncomfortable, but doing it anyway, and keep moving towards growth. You'll see in my diagram the Y (or new idea) in the conscious mind, over time will create a Y idea in your non-conscious mind, and with time, you will notice that you made the switch, broke free from your past where you were stuck, into a more fulfilling life, creating new results. You did this using faith that Hill says “is the head chemist of the mind.” (CH 3, page 45, TAGR). How Do We Develop Faith? “Faith is a state of mind that may be induced, or created by affirmations or repeated instructions..through the principle of auto-suggestion” (CH 3, page 46, TAGR). We develop Faith by following the 6 Steps, writing and reading our goal out loud every day, twice a day, until it moves into our non-conscious mind on autosuggestion. It's a process. If you have never read your goal out loud before, I will tell you that it feels weird in the beginning. When I first started doing this activity, I would close my window, thinking my neighbors will think I'm crazy, especially when I did this process trying to win grant funding for some of the projects I worked on. The first time you do this, you will feel weird, until with time, your words flow quickly, confidently, and easily. You will read your goals out loud “as if you were already in possession of them” (CH 3, page 48, TAGR). I found it helps to say something like “I'm so happy and grateful now that….” and whatever it is that you want “now that I'm awarded a $50,000 grant to work with students in our schools” or whatever it is that you might be working on. This is the part where we may all have different beliefs with this process, but if you are like me, and believe that there is something bigger than you, you can call it whatever you want (God, Spirit, Infinite Intelligence) whatever you call it, you will feel it in this process. Hill wrote that “FAITH is the element, the chemical which when mixed with prayer, gives one direct communication with Infinite Intelligence.” (CH 3, page 49, TAGR). We must have FAITH in our DREAMS, not in our DOUBTS. This is a process, that comes from following the 6 steps of reading/writing our goals every day and doesn't need to take a lot of time, Grant Cardone did it in less than 3 minutes. Faith is a state of mind that will develop as you become more self-aware, self-confident and with experience. Remember—to Become Unwavering with our Faith You must go through the Terror Barrier and match up your conscious mind, with your non-conscious mind. You will continue to build faith through autosuggestion when you write and repeat your goals. Pick one idea that you are working on, and as you move towards it, with new actions, you will develop more self-confidence, self-awareness and self-esteem. This will lead to BELIEF….one day you will be working and think back to the early days when you didn't have the level of confidence, faith and belief that you have today, and you will be grateful that you stepped outside of your comfort zone, through the fear, with faith at your side, into a new life that had more opportunity than you ever realized. Whatever it is that you are working on, remember with that understanding you can move past the fears, doubts, and uncertainties to hope, and this changes your entire mindset, giving you faith, fueling you to keep moving forward. I hope you are enjoying studying this book with me as I'm diving deeper into my notes more thoroughly than I've ever done in the past. Some of the wisest people in the world have studied these principles, and it doesn't matter what your background or level of education is. The playing field is equal for all of us. This book is the essence of success that can be used in anyone's life. I'll see you in the next few days as we move onto Specialized Knowledge, Imagination and Organized planning next episode, with an interview coming with Nick Jonsson, from Singapore, the author of the important and timely book, Executive Loneliness: The 5 Pathways to Overcome Isolation, Stress, Anxiety and Depression in the Modern Business World. "But what if I fail?"..... The only sure way to fail is not to start. In this episode, I discuss the "fear of failure" that holds so many of us back. What I know to be true is that we all have fear; it's simply our decision to move through it and take the first steps. The only way to move through the fear is to do the thing! The Terror Barrier is the feeling of fear & anxiety that you experience when you're about to push past your comfort zone in a major way. When we do this, there is awesome growth on the other side! In today's episode of We Go Boldly, we are talking about something different. Something we both have gone through and wanted to shed a light, bring awareness, and have a conversation about today. The darkness aka the Terror Barrier is the feeling of fear and anxiety you experience when you're about to push past your comfort zone in a major way. Tune in to hear our own personal anxieties and how we figure out how we can get passed. The Terror Barrier works as an internal indicator of how much tension you are facing in the moment. When it's in full effect, you are facing an extremely high amount of tension (for your own current capacity level). For many people, this is too much tension to handle and it shuts them down completely. They slide backward and allow their fears to prevent them from making any progress in their lives. The Terror Barrier is the gatekeeper that separates you from the point-of-no-return of a major decision. Challenges, or “terror barriers” based on our unconscious fears, can often erupt when we are working toward our goals and visions. A terror barrier is an illusion. Every fiber of our being wants us to turn back and throw in the towel, because the subconscious mind is always working to keep us safe and out of potential harm. Here is where we need to hold firm. Our problems are internal, not external. We have somehow labeled our situation as “bad,” and because we hold this energy, we hold resistance Healthy fear vs. unhealthy fear Not all fear is created equal and our responses should not be the same. It is important is to know is the difference between discomfort and distress. Discomfort should feel tolerable. When you are feeling discomfort, what you want to do should still feel exciting and like something you are looking forward to. Distress, on the other hand, feels overwhelming and gets in the way of doing something that you want to do by impairing your ability. Distress tends to feel consuming and overwhelming; you may even feel panicked or like you might die if you take the action. Healthy Reasons to Push Through/Challenge Fear. When the gain outweighs the pain. When we are not willing to give up the thing that we are afraid of. When we want to be free to do the things we want to do -- and don't want to be controlled by fear. When to Listen to Fear and (Possibly) Stop Doing What Makes Us Afraid Proving (yet again) that we can push through fear. Proving an identity. When the risk is not worth the reward. How do we get through the terror barrier? When problems or crises present themselves, understand that all problems are illusions. They come from the context we create around a situation that we decide we do not like. Remember, change is inevitable. The universe is on your side, not against you. Look for the greater seed of benefit. Focus on getting into a state of flow. This is only acquired by being in the present moment. We cannot get there by being in our heads. Reconfirm how you have dealt successfully before with terror barriers. Set specific goals, rather than rely on a generic dream. Take the first step toward your first goal. Recognize the terror barrier and see it as a growth opportunity. Take satisfaction in widening your comfort zone, the opportunity to learn, and the progress toward your goals. Start and end the day with gratitude. GO BOLDLY HOMEWORK Think about the last time you were scared or sensed the darkness. How did you get through it? How did you identify if it was healthy or unhealthy? Do you have any big goals right now that you know fear is holding you back? What are they? If you have big goals and you know fear is getting in the way, what can you do to help work through it? RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE SHOW Did you enjoy this episode? On this episode, I talk about what it feels like getting out of your comfort zone and the emotional cycle that keeps most leaders in theirs. Once we do something that we've never done before, there's an invisible barrier that I call the terror barrier. It keeps leaders safe, secure and dangerously comfortable. I'm going to tell you how to break through it. It isn't easy but it can be done. It must be done! It takes one of two things. So listen in and find out what that is. I talk about a video that I did for my Emerging Leader Inner Circle and here's the link to that video on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/0i2RvnjcJso And if you have questions or comments, please reach out to me and my team at admin@davidmcglennen.com
Overcoming the FEAR of Success “It’s not really what you want, it’s what you wish.” Amy Lee Westervelt Amy Lee Westervelt’s journey in the network marketing industry began in Juno, Alaska, where her husband was stationed. At the time, she felt very hopeless and wanted a different lifestyle. So, she and her husband agreed that if she could replace their monthly income, they could look into other options. She began researching the law of attraction and other ways of manifesting their financial goals. Amy discovered network marketing, and new windows of opportunity opened up for her and her family. Before long, she was making a six and a seven-figure income. Now, Amy is a successful mindset coach for empath entrepreneurs. She uses her background within network marketing to help network marketing professionals make peace with the resistance of more aggressive marketing techniques and empowers them to go after what they really want. How can you dream bigger? Amy has a three-step process of how to do this. First, assess what you want? “The law of attraction is about aligning the outcomes you want with what you have.” - Amy Lee For example, if your child needed specific medication because their life depended on it, wouldn’t you do anything and everything to obtain that medication? Of course! Yet, when it comes to your dreams, you only have some skin in the game, which doesn’t necessarily drive you. Surrounding yourself with the kind of people who want you want is the second step. Alignment is crucial. When you emulate their habits first, you can modify them to fit into what works for you. When you surround yourself with successful people, you start thinking differently and believing they believe. You change from thinking I’m not enough, to I can do anything. The third step is is to affirm. To say that it’s so. “What will my life be like when? And start living as if...and then start making room for that abundance in your life.” - Amy Lee When you experience resistance, it’s called the Terror Barrier. This refers to your ego and how it strives to keep you safe. However, it often prevents you from trying new things because it tells you that “new” isn’t safe. Yet, the truth is, you’re not afraid of failing. You’re scared of succeeding because you don’t know what life looks like there. “When you come up to resistance, the first thing to do is to thank that resistance.” - Amy Lee Resistance is there to protect you, but if you don’t push back, it will relax. To overcome resistance, let go of all the other things you haven’t done. Let go of the guilt. Don’t take setbacks as personal attacks. They’re normal; instead, jump in the driver seat and try it again. Understanding that your ego is there to help you allows you to break false beliefs and create new ones. “Forgive yourself for the dreams you didn’t think you were allowed were to aspire to.” - Amy Lee Imposter Syndrome is one way people fear success because they believe they can’t do what they claim. However, when you start using “I,” you already know you’re inside your head. What are you getting paid to do? You’re getting paid as a network marketer to show up and help others learn how to market their business authentically. It’s not your responsibility to reach their goals for them or make them do the work. You have to get over the feeling of being responsible for your team’s ultimate success. They need to create goals; they need to put in the work and market in authentic ways. You provide the tools and guidance necessary to do that. Cheer for them, show up for them, but remember what you’re there for.
